Moar Xmen

Quote
“We’re filming at the moment, we’ve a lot to get done,” said a weary Vaughn, whose credits include memorable but modest-grossing indie fare like “Kick-Ass” and “Layer Cake.” “I’ve never worked under such time pressure. The good thing about the independent world is I never even knew if I was going to get distribution. I’m used to finishing a film and then crossing your fingers that someone is going to like it. This is totally doing it the other way around. We’ve definitely got a release date and we’ve got to make it.”

Vaughn is famous for firebrand candor and droll wit, and despite the hand-wringing right now among some Fox executives, the British filmmaker isn’t turning meek under the pressure. Asked if he’s concerned about the glut of superhero film competition this summer — with “Captain America: The First Avenger,” “Green Lantern” and  ”Thor” – Vaughn said that, if anything, it’s the other guys who should be nervous. “With ‘Green Lantern,’ I don’t know about that one, I couldn’t get my head around the trailer, to be honest … look, I will say the following: X-Men as a brand is bigger than Captain America, Thor and the Green Lantern, all put together.”

Who thought it was a good idea to do an X-Men film without the most popular X-Men? Sure I like the idea of a 60s X-Men because it could lead to some interesting shit, but I doubt many people want to see an X-Men film with a bunch of social commentary and shit.

the director and main two actors (Charles and Magneto) gave me some hope that it would be alright.

if it wasn't for spider-man (looks good) and green lantern (not so much), I'd say Marvel is trying its best to ruin super hero movies.

:hyper, why did they include Havok though? that means that by the time of the first movie he was around Xavier age? that's kind of stupid.

Don't question the lack of continuity logic with the dudes at Fox. They included a young Emma Frost in that shit Wolverine movie.

Not too concerned about the odd easter nugget character being fully purposed in another movie. I expect/kinda hope that this movie is only loosely inline with the previous Xmen movies - respects what needs to be respected but doesn't sweat the small stuff. Especially after X3 and Wolverine.

green lantern is dc

I know.  what I'm saying is that DC is also producing crappy looking comic book movies, hence the green lantern mention.  I mention spider-man because I think that could be pretty good.

caught a bit of Zorro on the telly the other day, and I'll be danged if it ain't not bad at all.  The swordfights and stunts kick mucho ass, everything else is 1800's-1970's style James Bond.  I'm sure the sequel is pants, but the 90's Zorro is good stuff.

and for reasons unknown even to me I have a soft spot for the Ray Liotta sci-fi vehicle No Escape.  Probably for the Ray-ness of it all.

I watched Le Doulos, which is a twisty French noir from Melville about a bunch of gangsters, one of whom is suspected to be a police informant, but all of whom are unreadable, unremorseful and underhanded.  It's a bit of a shame how the plot is revealed in full near the end, but the ending more than makes up for it.

The A-Team

Was alright.  I saw The Losers a while back and this was the better of the two; that's not saying much.  but yeah, it was alright.  Some really awful CG in it, though.

and liam neeson's hair looked weird 99% of the movie.

I think I really appreciate how disturbing many of the encounters were without going the route of gratuitous gore.  Its there but it doesn't overstay its welcome.  The pacing was also nicely handled.  More movies need the guy walking onto the field with a shotgun right away.   If I had to complain, the way the military was presented comes off a little ... cheesy? Overdone?  I dunno, felt off.

I thought they went a bit too fast to the "well, everyone's a zombie now, I guess" stage of the movie. It felt like there should have been more build up to that, although it wasn't missing entirely, there's some room there for them to explore a bit more the steady breakdown as people slowly begin to go insane from the infection/virus/comet.

Edit: Actually, in thinking about it, I guess my complaint would be not so much that it moved into that stage too quickly, but that it moved into that stage at all. The movie's not about zombies, necessarily, but about ordinary people breaking down and committing unspeakable acts that they would never think of committing in their right mind. But the second half of the movie becomes way more like a standard zombie movie than it felt it should have. What I'm saying is that it seemed like they were going one way with the second half, but then abandoned that and went the safer route in the second half instead.

It's not a huge issue, but it's a bit disappointing to me.

Piranha (2010 version)

I like horror movies, I love cheezy silly horror movies, I even like gory horror movies and this has a 75% RT, what could go wrong?

Ugh, this sucked!  There wasn't enough goofy/corny stuff, the pacing was AWFUL and most of the movie is dull boring and then all the tension is in the last 30 mins and the gore was just way too much, even for me.  It was stupid looking and gross.  Bleh.  Probably the worst horror movie I've seen in a long time.  Usually I find something enjoyable out of them.  Was just boring.

Although the movie did feature the most nudity I have ever seen in a non-porn film.

I was also a bit baffled by the praise; I thought it was god awful save for a few scenes, particularly a few hilarious ones near the end courtesy of Jerry O'Connell.  They bogged it down with far too much plotting, like someone out there would really give a damn.  I guess these are the same people that thought Snakes on a Plane was good.

Also, the 3D was fucking terrible - easily the worst I've seen.  I wouldn't even mention it, but it's pretty shameful when the theatrical release was called "Piranha 3D".  It's obvious it was only tacked on at the end to make a few extra bucks.

It really surprises me that as big as Batman has gotten recently, that WB hasn't done a new Batman series in a darker/more serious style like the movies.

The Batman and Brave and the Bold are just way too meh-riffic.

Real Talk.

But I'd love for more of animated Batman direct to dvd movies, is there any news on the next one if there is a next one?

Spotted this after some digging on Wikipedia:

Quote
As confirmed by Comics Continuum, a future film in the series will be an adaptation of Frank Miller's story "Batman: Year One" from 1987 in the main Batman title, featured in issues #404-407. It will be co-directed by Sam Liu and Lauren Montgomery. A release date of September 27, 2011 has been reported for the film.

Dinner for Schmucks
Holy crap this is terrible.  Steve Carrell is obnoxious.  If Michael Scott annoys you, this will cause you to punch things.  It's one of those movies where everything could be fixed if one person would shut the fuck up and listen to a simple explanation but it doesn't happen.  It actually never happens.  It's just distinguished mentally-challenged.  I hated this movie so much.

The Horsemen
A somewhat interesting detective movie regarding a serial killer following religious motives.  Nothing that hasn't been seen a million times.  It's got some neat scenes and even some cool creepy elements.  But the policework that goes into finding them is stupid as hell so prepare to suspend disbelief several times.  And the twist comes out of nowhere without any forewarning.  Seriously some lazy writing.  But some cool scenes and it's okay if you're bored.

Close Encounters of the Third Kind
Never saw this until now.  A lot of the effects still hold up today.  The scene in the truck is badass.  The humor is right on fucking cue.  But it feels like it drags its feet.  The concept and most of the execution is neat, but I think it could have been edited down.  Then again, I saw the Blu Ray Director's Cut so I don't know how that differs with the other cuts.

Insomnia
Definitely a cool thriller.  Fun and entertaining popcorn flick.  It's not deep or crazy but if you're looking for a cool detective film, it fits perfectly.

over the weekend i watched three movies:

2001: A Space Odyssey

first time watching it. was really impressed. the Dawn of Man intro was brilliant. I also was really fond of the "dance" sequence a little bit later between the Hilton space station and the space plane. especially the part where you see both spinning in unison. one of the few times when i'm watching a movie where i genuinely smiled and appreciated how well put together a shot is.
the movie got better during the Hal story arc. loved the pacing and the final 15 minute mindfuck was just that - a mindfuck.
thumbs way up.

Ip Man

what a silly ass movie. seriously. this is supposed to be a "biopic"? arent those supposed to be accurate? Yip Man did not fight a Japanese general. come on. This is like silly ass Chinese propaganda. It doesnt help that Yip Man is invincible.
spoiler (click to show/hide)
dude never loses a fight. never gets injured. in the final battle against the japanese general he DESTROYS him. it's not even a contest. it was pretty badass when he fought 10 guys at the same time tho.
[close]
That said - the movie is still not bad. the fight scenes are pretty good but are fairly reserved I found. it all just seems so silly. all the attempts at being serious fall flat. especially the part where Yip trains a group of factory workers. Donnie Yen is a cool dude but I don't think he's a very good actor. stick to crazy action movies.
thumbs kinda sideways

Animal Kingdom

been hearing a lot about this movie. a lot of praise and whatnot. some people saying it's "Australias Godfather" or whatever. Dunno how to respond to that since I've never seen Godfather but it is a pretty good crime story. The plot drives forward well and there are some really great displays of ACTING goings on.
my only real ISSUE is the main character. Josh i think his name is. he sucks. the actor is just not good. he sleepwalks through every scene with a stupid look on his face and i just hate him. hate. i guess he's supposed to be wide-eyed and innocent but he just looks distinguished mentally-challenged. maybe i'm making too much of it. but man he really drags the movie down.
guy pearce was great.
thumbs up.

The remake just looked way too overproduced and too forced. The original is about two guys [an arrogant upper-middle class socialite and a totally oblivious accountant] together in an apartment, with the latter driving the former completely nuts. There are only a few scenes that take place outside the apartment.

That sounds better.  They go fucking everywhere in this one and it's like watching a cartoon.  But it's not charming, it's obnoxious because Steve Carrell is fucking terrible and he does his stupid slow start laugh, and "hey, i'm so innocent i'm trying to be cute" smile and that obnoxious "ahhhhhhh" shit he does when he yells.  I hate him so much.  I really wish he'd break out of these roles.  He's an older Michael Cera and it's just creepy and stupid at his age.  It's fucking "Michael Scott: The Movie".  It's really one of the worst movies I've seen in a long time.

I think Steve Carell is capable.  You see shades of it in his roles.  Its kinda like Jim Carrey in that he gets typecast as an obnoxious douchebag but is capable of pulling off a performance like you see in The Majestic.
