Kill Bill Volume 1 was a great set up and volume 2 was a fantastic execution of the set up.  I like the second one better because it had the most meat so to speak.  Not that I'd turn away from Volume 1 being shown.

I also thought IB was a great movie.

I wish the execution had better style. It feels jarring coming off of Vol. 1.

The change in style is jarring to me but I don't think I've watched them back to back since they came out on DVD.

I think I would have liked Vol. 2 more if it was just one film with a better segue.

I'm watching Croupier. A failed writer noir narrated gambling story. It's got Clive Owen and River Song from Doctor Who who appears totally nude, full frontal.

I actually also recently rewatched Before Sunrise/Sunset, two of my favorite movies. I fell in love with the first because of the wonderful characters - both the leads are perfect (with some great chemestry between the two) and I love the feeling of being carefree and in love that's carried throughout the film. I had actually seen the first back a few years ago for the first time without realizing there was a sequel and made my own little imagined story about what happened afterwards. I was so glad to find out there WAS a sequel and fell in love with that too. Sure, it was different than my own imaginary sequel was but it's, imo, a perfect sequel, especially impressive for a genre that doesn't often have great sequels. It's incredibly satisfying to revisit these characters you loved from the first movie, but with older and different views on love. I love the fact that Before Sunset takes place in real time, and the ending is pretty great too.

I seriously can't gush enough about these movies. I'm not one for romance movies but there's just something about this pair of films that I adore and I really hope that someday we get to see these characters again.

The sorcerer and the white snake
: Bitterly disappointing on every level bar the excellent cinematography and beautiful locales. Worth a watch for eye candy, but nothing else about this film is even remotely praiseworthy. 3/10

Rise of the Planet of the Apes

really good. all the ape related stuff was just so well done. from Ceasar learning and growing, to his jail time, becoming leader, and the revolt. it was all handled to a degree that didn't seem cheesy. seriously impressed by it.

specific spoilery related thoughts:
spoiler (click to show/hide)
I liked that they setup a lot of things that help explain why the Apes would eventually take over.
-They explain that the virus is very effective on apes but not humans
-They show that humans react extremely negatively to it
-It's a virus so it's something that would spread (and did, from the dead lab tech to the annoying neighbor)
-They explain that the apes pass the traits of the virus down
-The apes living in the red-wood, likely untouched. They live, breed, and produce super smart ape offspring

So you have a human race that will likely begin to weaken due to this virus that will begin to spread, and a community of super smart apes that are going to begin breeding. perfect mix for a planet of apes.

edit: also forgot... the fucking "NOO!!!" moment was badass
[close]

so yeah. i really liked it. also, Andy Serkis is amazing.

Just go watch the Charlton Heston one. It's good. Or watch the "Twilight Zone" styled 30 minute remake of it:

I watched Shaolin last night. It turned out to be another Chinese propaganda kung-fu film in the line of Ip Man and the like. For a certain section of the film, it forgot that it was such a film and actually ventured close to being about one character's loss and adaptation, but then that all served the endgame where there was a long, drawn out ending that dragged and dragged on just to make the audience feel the right message. The editing really comes apart at the end due to this. My favorite bit is where you have Chinese warlords fighting and killing and being overall detriments to life and society, then you see both the evil warlords redeemed and bunch of whiteys that had only two scenes show up to blow up the shaolin temple for no good reason. It's like they almost got through a film without blaming the Japanese or whites. ALMOST!

The fights were a lot of subdued wire-fights. Nothing much with a realistic, brutal feel. The best fight scenes was the hostage freeing scene, with some nice bo staff action. There is heavy use of staffs in this film and I'm a fan of martial staff use. The way they have the monks slide down the roofs and land softly with the help of their beatsticks is pretty nice. The worst scenes consisted of the daughter's amazing near-survival. I liked Jackie Chan in this film in a limited role, and his scenes with Lau in the kitchen and fields are the best parts of the film.

What is most interesting about the film is that it uses the mighty whitey trope without the racial coding. The exact same plot of hte trope, and the amazing quickness at which the evil warlord masters the shaolin invokes the last samurai, but by removing the racial coding, it shows that this myth being told has a lot more going on than America's own racial hangups allow it to see.

Detective Dee and the Mystery of the Phantom Flame

Not a great movie, perhaps, but it was entertaining enough. At its heart, it's a murder mystery, adding in ancient Chinese mythology/history, mixing fact with fantasy, and throwing in lots of wire-fu really doesn't change that face. Even so, those things do add a bit of depth to the overall movie and it was interesting enough to hold my attention for all two hours. I'd like to see this become a franchise of mystery movies, but I doubt that'll happen.

Eh the football scene looked fine because I bet it will be a part of a much larger scene showing destruction in the city.  If it's an entire scene dedicated to that then yeah it will be awful but I doubt it.

It should also be slightly better with sound effects. And it kinds looked like Bane might have been using the explosives to reveal something hidden underground, so it might not be part of a scene of broader destruction, hard to say.

Anne Hathaway looks [and sounds] spectacular, by the way.

Yep yep yep. I love his movies but people (tons of them on gaf) who basically see him as the greatest director who ever lived are annoying and go way overboard. And the people who think he is a bad director which is just plain wrong period, you may not like his movies or bothered by his faults but the dude fucking knows how to put together a blockbuster that very few in the studio system big leagues today can are just looking for attention and trolling, if not they are just as stupid as the other group.

I love his movies and he is the only really consistent blockbuster director working today but he isn't greater than Kubrick/Hitchcock/etc.

To be honest, I see Nolan as a Shyamalan who is smart enough to have someone else write his movies (and also is not quite as cheesy).  They both tend to try things that have a unique concept and the execution is always muddled.  Nolan pulls it off significantly better though.

Nolan's problems are dialogue(at times) and action scenes. He gets those down and he's good to go.

I only really had a problem with the dialogue in The Dark Knight and that was mostly throwaway lines from tertiary characters. Most of his other movies have had perfectly fine dialogue. His action scenes ARE hit-and-miss though, unfortunately.

Yeah that's why I said he pulls it off significantly better.  Each of his movies do tend to have a gimmick of sorts filled with tons of exposition explaining the gimmick.  Shyamalan's gimmicks are shocking twists for the sake of being shocking filled with tons of exposition setting up the twist.

True enough, not the best action around but he does seem like he's getting his eye for that kind of thing. Hopefully TDKR continues that trend.

The footage from Prometheus is looking pretty amazing.

Speaking of action scenes, did anyone here actually like the bourne movies action scenes? Specifically talking about that close up shaky cam fight they have in the shower (i think in the second film) where all you could see were really zoomed in close ups of hands moving.

I dunno.  I think Nolan has gotten it down on small scale fights like the hallway scene in Inception.  But the action in the snow level is a mess.  Possibly even worse than the spatial awareness issues in TDK.  I enjoy both scenes but from an editing and camerawork standpoint both are extremely weak.
