Check these movies out if you can as they are the grand influence for Pacific Rim.

I'm holding off on watching the Pacific Rim trailer because it's supposed to be in front of The Hobbit.  I want to experience it in the theater for the first time :hyper  GAF has been shitting on everything coming out of this movie for a few months.  A lot of tards are complaining because it isn't anime-ish enough.  ::)

Virtuosity is underrated. Great flick.

I re-watched Superman Returns to see if it was as bad as I remember. I watched it immediately on the heels of The Dark Knight Rises, which almost certainly didn't do it any favors. Even so, the movie felt interminably long. The ending in particular just seems unnecessarily drawn out. Kevin Spacey is wasted, Brandon Routh does a good impression of Christopher Reeves' Clark Kent and Superman, but that's about it. I'd love to have seen just a little more of his Vegan Superman character from Scott Pilgrim in this, but it is clear that Singer just wanted to recreate the Donner magic of the first two films. Instead he just ended up aping it. "Do not seek to walk in the footsteps of wise men; seek what they sought."

Pontypool was a good movie but it got really dumb by the end plotwise.  I dunnnooooooooo

Killing Them Softly was fucking awesome.  Not as good as best picture of 2007 Assassination of Jesse James, and it kind of beats you over the head with the political background.  But OMG IS THIS MOVIE BEAUTIFULLY SHOT, incredibly acted, very well written dialogue-wise, with great music and excellent direction pulling it all together.  The story plot is the weakest link as it's a pretty simple/short story.  But the characters are fleshed out interestingly and it's just so stylish and well made.  Top3 film of the year so far.  For the first half of the movie I thought it might even be better than Moonrise Kingdom and be my favorite film this year, but it meanders a bit in the middle plot-wise and though it ends strong, it's lost some footing by then.  Still, great movie!

Looper is a pretty cool movie

i appreciate it blatantly doesnt let time-travel be a crutch and doesnt make it the main point of the movie.

JGL was pretty good and I was surprised at how the prosthetic effects stopped looking weird to me pretty early in. I think it only looks weird because you know what JGL looks like and he looks just enough like himself in the movie that the differences become weird. basically the uncanny valley effect.

i found the way they deal with the Jeff Daniels to be a bit convenient.
spoiler (click to show/hide)
the entire Gatman force is just removed from the plot by Bruce Willis. seemed they didnt really know how to deal with that side of the plot so Bruce just kills them all.

i go back and forth on it

on the one hand it's a beautiful fantasy movie
on the other hand the beautiful fantasy it's expounding on is really kind of fucked up and is really problematic class and race wise.

it's certainly worth watching for it's non traditional structure and what the filmmakers were able to achieve but it makes me feel kind of ooky.

I had the same thought watching Tintin that it felt like Uncharted Jr. It was more than just the genre being about pulp/adventure though, they both had very similar styles of going from crazy setpiece to crazy setpiece, where the camera does all this crazy panning around while stuff is flying all over the screen if that makes any sense.

Killer Joe is a fantastic movie.

Matthew McConaughey is an enigma to me. He's in these super sappy romcoms and you think "this dude is worthless" then he does something like this and is just gold on the screen.

Saw the Hobbit yesterday afternoon...

What a drawn out long ass movie, on the plus side the HFR made the 3d stand out a lot more. But more on the negative side was the fact that action sequences seemed to have a fast forward like quality to them. Any time the camera moved around someone that was doing something it would feel like it was sped up and not natural. I think that 64fps is probably just right for most people.

A lot of the action sequences reminded me of video games in how they looked which isn't a bad thing, but it wasn't something I was expecting. Also this movie has a lot of comedy and a lighter tone to it than the previous trilogy. The ending scene was just blah... Can't wait for the next one.

On a side note there was an Extended Star Trek trailer attached to our showing.

As someone who championed the 2009 release. I loved it even though it screws with a great franchise, but WTF JJ!!! I know Zachary Quinto came out as gay, but he is letting it kill one of the best characters from the 09 movie. He is just soulless and its like he dreads playing the character cause of the romance between him and Uhura. I know the character has a lot of stuff going on due to the fact Vulcan was wiped off the face of the universe, but still its just bad acting.

Now on the other hand everything else looked kick ass! May 7th Bitches!

I would have liked if peter jackson tried something fresh in the look, not the epic melodrama maybe but a bit more down to earth adventure/look/feel but while retaining thw humour. The movie has funny bits, but its nowhere near as lighthearted as the book I loved more the Lotr.

I really liked The Hobbit. I felt it did a far better job of invoking the feel of fantasy adventure story than the LOTR movies did. Specifically with giving character to the "enemies" that are faced:

I think the films problem is that barely anything happens and it's literally ALL setup for the events to come. Nothing of real substance happens. And in a weird sense, it's basically a remake of Fellowship. It follows a lot of the same beats and the events mirror Fellowship fairly closely.

That said. I got a lot of enjoyment watching it. The riddles scene was quite good as were the action set pieces.

So did anyone see the HFR version? I don't really think my theatre has that capability. Or maybe i'm just completely ignorant to the concept. For most of the film it looked like any other film (except 3d) but there was a few specific moments (Rivendell especially) where I could swear it was in a higher frame rate. it was jarring because it was just a few moments.

Took the family to see Frankenweenie, which opened this weekend in Japan. This is as good as Tim Burton gets: fantastic physical animation, brilliant visuals, and a quirky, fun, dark, but not completely emo story. Hopefully the movie will recover its costs in home video and international theatrical, as it appears to have tanked badly at the box office in the USA.

So, the movie Ted came out on DVD/BR this week and I was really tempted to buy it once when I saw it on sale for $18.  I hadn't even watched the movie, but I thought about doing it anyway.  I figured that since it was made my Seth Macfarland, it probably couldn't be bad.  But I had a nagging sensation telling me to rent it first.

Oh man, am I glad that I didn't buy it.  Rented it from Google Play on my tablet last night because I had free money in my e-wallet thing and decided to watch it before going to bed.

That movie was borderline horrible because, like so many people said, they gave away nearly ALL the funny parts in the previews.  I think I may have laughed twice.  The Flash Gordon stuff was probably the best content in the movie.

the hobbit. :o:o:o

c/p'ing my post on gaf:

STUNNING.

i saw it in hfr 3d. the first time i saw old bilbo walking in his hallway at the very beginning, it looked sped up. hell, it's even noticeable from the moment the logo's appear right before the actual film starts. it immediately 'clicked' with me once during the flashback to erebor. my god, i have never seen a film so clear! no blur. no darkened images.

still, though, there were moments throughout the film where someone was blinking their eyes or someone was moving their

i thought 95% of the cg looked impeccable. the only time it looked awfully fake was during the chase sequence right before they arrive at rivendell--the creatures looked pasted onto the screen.

when i saw some of the stills beforehand, i thought it looked quite fake, but i didn't have problems like that when watching the film. i even remember watching the first trailer thinking it looked too bright, and colorful, and fake, but, again, i didn't have that problem when watching it.

as for the film itself? i loved it, even more so than any of the lord of the rings films. one thing that really stuck out to me was that the battles actually felt EPIC (i'm so sorry for using this word) this time around. with the previous films, the battles looked grand when seen from afar, but once you got into it, it always looked like there were no more than twenty people performing awkward acrobatics on some set.

the only part that felt too long to me was at the very beginning with frodo.

shit, the only thing i disliked was that the music sounded too familiar to the ones in previous films with the exception of the gorgeous "misty mountains cold."

tldr: avatar 3d, lulz.

I'm not sure what that movie will be about, and it has Ben Affleck in it, so it's probably doomed.

But I'll probably still watch it because it looks like there may be sexy-time scenes with Racheal McAdams.  :hump

Yeah, the Town was pretty good.  Never watched Argo.  I was just thinking of all the other movies he's made....

do you mean movies he's been in, or movies he's directed?
