the last Asian release the Weinstien company did (Dragon) was also cut for English speaking peoples.  By about 17 minutes, it was all character building and light comedy stuff, it did not improve the movie (obviously), but having seen both cuts it was just an incredibly pointless action to take.  It made the film faster paced at the expense of making it more flavorless, and considering its a period mystery/martial arts movie, making it less interesting is almost an achievement.  Its a dang good movie, like a more fun redo of A History of Violence.

the American cut is a good movie, it wasn't fatally wounded, the international cut is a better one.  It also took about a year and a half to make it to a legit American release, and was given a generic English title, to be fair, the Chinese title is equally generic (Wu Xia vs Dragon).  The original title would be akin to releasing Clint Eastwood's Unforgiven as 'Western'.

that's so weird especially after they did Dragon Dynasty in an attempt to salvage their reputations, but that's been all but abandoned in the past few years.

Harvey Weinstein may be one of the worst movie studio executives ever, even including all the ones from 20th Century Fox.

Yeah, I thought they'd turned a corner when they hired Bey Logan and started Dragon Dynasty, but now it's back to the same ol' shit.

As talked about in the Movie News Topic, I've watched the X-Men movies.

In summary:
X1 - about as I remembered, maybe a little more dry than I'd like to admit. Still good.
X2 - holy shit, better than I remembered. So much excellent character interaction, a great villain, and a number of good shifts in the storyline. plus, it just picks right up after X1 left off, seamless continuity.
X3 - PLEASE SHOOT ME. Everything done right in the first two movies is enthusiastically UNDONE in this, and all goodwill is squandered. A waste of time, money, energy, and a giant step back in the series.

Next up, X-Men Origins: Wolverine, and hopefully The Wolverine while I'm in the USA.

Byzantium - Neil Jordan's new vampire film.  More a meditation on motherhood and such than a horror film.  Good drama about two female vampires living in a seaside irish town with extensive flashbacks to the time in their lives which turned them into vampires.  The "younger" vampire is enrolled in school where her nonfiction story of her past disguised as fiction catches the attention of some of the residents of the town leading to their downfall.  Not breathtakingly original by any means, but a fairly good drama.  Certainly worse ways to waste two hours.

Can't wait for the Hollywood remake, titled Devious and starring Jennifer Lawrence.

Grave Encounters wasn't really scary but it was pretty good (even if it does blow it's load a bit early.)

I still don't know what to think of the sequel. I think I've come around to liking it, since this scene is brilliant:

Recommend me some good horror movies.

taken from one of the million horror movie threads we have

The Rue Morgue List Entries For Which I Can Personally Vouch

http://killprettymagazine.com/facemeltingfilms/?p=366

13 Tzameti -tense little noir with a great set up and execution

Abby -can be summed up as "the blaxorcist" except dealing with Baptist themes rather than Catholic ones

Abominable Dr Phibes -comedy horror with Vincent Price camping it up. kills based on Bibical Plagues

Amer -homage to 60/70s euro cinema. great colors nonsensical, dreamlike story based on tone rather than an intricate plot

Angst  -crazy austrian movie about a home invasion

Anguish -see this. go in knowing as little as you can.

Attack the Block -chavs vs aliens. great fucking movie. like Monster Squad for a new generation.

the Bad Seed -kind of stagey but still slick and subversive. a mother comes to suspect her perfect daughter is a relentless murderer

Bay of Blood -one of the first bodycount films.  i love almost all of Mario Bava's films but this is the only one listed in the book. i made a thread about it http://www.thebore.com/forum/index.php?topic=16343.0

Black Death -medieval horror film about colonizations wrapped up in a Church vs Heretics plot.

The Blob (remake) -johnny drama in a mullet battles a blob from space.  good effects and good re-imagining of the original (which wasn't great so it's not like this is sacrilege)

Burrowers -AWESOME WESTERN HORROR FILM. Part The Searchers part Tremors (minus the humor)

Carnival of Souls -advertising man makes just one movie in his life and it's a classic. the first of the whole "dead people who don't know they're dead" horror films. hypnotic and surreal.

Cemetery Man -comedy romance with a man who works as a groundskeeper in a cemetery who has to occasionally re-kill zombies. It takes a turn for the weird in the end so may not be everyone's cup of tea.

The Changeling -classic horror film made for HBO starring George C Scott who moves into a new house after the death of his family only to find it is haunted.  Good detective story mixed in with a good haunted house tale.  Cribs elements from other films, but you won't care because it's so good.  literally one of my favorites

A Chinese Ghost Story -more of a romance than a horror film.  a young chinese priest falls in love with a ghost who has some very jealous sisters. lots of wire-fu and copious soft focus gives this a really dream like quality

Cure -a cop tries to solve a series of random murders where the perpetrators can't recall the murders nor do they have any motivation to kill

Curse of The Werewolf -based off of Werewolf of Paris but really watered down from that excellent book.  I like this movie a lot.  Being a werewolf would fucking suck.

Dagon -Stuart Gordon returns to Lovecraft with The Shadow Over Insmouth transported to Spain.  A man discovers a village of fishmen and their terrible god.

Dead Snow -splatstick comedy of norweigan slackers versus nazi zombies.  a self aware comedy which doesn't take itself too seriously and delivers lots and lots and lots and lots of inventive violence presented almost gleefully

Demons -italians are lured to a movie theater then locked in and then are killed as monster come from film being watched to eat everyone.  Has race issues like whoah in the form of a pimp character.

Devil's Backbone -i don't think i really have to talk about this film on the bore.

Diabolique -one of my absolute favorites.a woman's philandering husband dies but why does she keep seeing him at the school they run?

dog soldiers -special ops vs werewolves. fucking great action horror film. hits all the right notes and hits them hard.

Duel -Spielberg's first film. made for TV. based on a short story by Richard Matheson.

Event Horizon -a haunted house in space. i love this movie.

Evil Dead Trap -i haven't seen this in forever, but it features an "abandoned" building which is basically a series of elaborate traps and features THE CRAZIEST FUCKING ENDING.

Exorcist 3 -after the horrible sequel, the author of the original book on which the first movie was made convinced Warner Brothers to let him write and direct a sequel based on his semi-sequel novel Legion. It's good.

Eyes Without a Face -a girl who is the victim of a disfiguring car crash has a surgeon father who is obsessed with fixing her and takes to murder to accomplish his aims.  so good.

Fire in the Sky -this UFO abduction story deals more with the psychological aftereffects rather than the terror of the abduction itself.  as a teen obsessed with ufology this movie scared the crap out of me

Frailty -i haven't seen this since it came out, but i recall liking it a great deal.  Good stuff by bill paxton

Ginger Snaps -teen girls going through puberty and becoming werewolves.  wonderful little anti-Buffy.

Halloween 3 -nothing to do with michael meyers but it's so good. semi-lovecraftian themes of the intersection of religion / horror and technology

Hardware -POSTAPOCALYPTIC MURDERBOT VERSUS ROAD WARRIOR SCUM. features Lemmy Killmeister.

Henry: Portrait of a Serial Killer -sadistic and intense almost documentary take on murder.

Horror Express -goofy peter cushing / christopher lee film about a defrosted monster killing people on a train in siberia.

House (Hausu) -insane little lsd movie about girls in a murderous house.

House of the Devil -don't think i have to expand on this one

House on Haunted Hill -vincent price in a william castle production. big on gimmicks.  a lot of fun in a really goofy way.

I Saw the Devil -twisted revenge film.  very gory. very intense scenes of torture with a bummer ending.

(i'll update the rest of these later)

Ichi The Killer (I'd classify this as a superhero film that happens to be really gory, but whatevz)

OK, well, I WAS WRONG.

That wasn't as bad as X3, but it was pretty damned bad. Worse than I remembered. I might have been blocking out memories in my head.

Logan's GF is hawt. Replacement Stryker is lame, lame, limpdick, lame. Flannel Boy was pretty good as a nasty, spiteful, but ultimately loving brother to Wolvie.

Gambit is played by John Carter of Mars. I'd not made that connection. Just as in the comix, he is ultimately pointless and annoying. Oddly, Ryan Reynolds would have been a better casting for that character, as he's fundamentally pointless and annoying, but a little charming.

But the biggest offense is this weird, byzantine plot they build up around how can they convince Wolverine to get adamantium bones, and then once they've done it, all they want to do is kill him. None of it makes any sense, but at least people are mainly true to their character, which can't be said about X3.

Ready to watch The Wolverine on the big screen in California now.

I think the best bit was when he walks into the diner, and pretends that he's a small town sheriff.

Upstream Color was worth watching, it's like a SF Tree of Life. The most hilarious thing is that the wife and I spent the entire movie going "is that ... are they ... what's going ... huh" and reading interviews/FAQs afterwards, we understood the movie perfectly. So it's not a total mindfuck like Primer, just a story told in an elliptical and non-verbal way.

Oblivion was shit. I watched it because of assholes like you who told me it "wasn't bad" and "better than expected." BULLSHIT. Don't waste your life. It's from the director of Tron: Legacy who is now on my "do not watch" shit list after batting 0-for-2.

Also saw Glengarry Glen Ross for the first time. I was expecting something a bit more like Wall Street the way sales people latch on to Alec Baldwin as a role model, but it paints sales as a rather isolating and depressing industry to work in. Also, I wasn't aware of the cast pedigree going in. :gladbron

Trying to finish off GI Joe:$1 Million Dollars A Die Another Day. Bruce Willis vs Harrison Ford, both in their prime.
Who'd win? I'd say Willis, he's a brute in Pulp Fiction.

Watched that new Larry David TV movie, Clear History.

Felt like a real throwback with a kind of screwball caper set up. I don't think movies are really LD's strong suit, too much plot required. Definitely enjoyable to see him, Danny McBride, JB Smoove, Michael Keaton and Jon Hamm all in the same feature though.

Blue Jasmine - Really, really enjoyed this, definitely one of Woody Allen's better recent films. Cate Blanchett is fantastic, completely compelling every time she's on screen and 100% the reason to see this movie. That's not to say everyone else is bad - the rest of the cast is also pretty wonderful. Sally Hawkins is very good as the sister, Alec Baldwin is Alec Baldwin and perfectly fine, hell even fucking Andrew Dice Clay was great. Could have used a bit more Louis C.K. though. Some good Woody Allen dialogue, a good story (I liked constant switch between current day and flashbacks), certainly a film worth seeing especially if you're a fan of his work.

^I liked what they showed even though I'm not familiar with the guardians of the galaxy comics.  In a lot of ways it's what I imagined a green lantern movie would look like.

Saw a preview screening of the new Woody Allen today (Blue Jasmine). Blanchett is really fucking good, Baldwin kinda phoned it in. And it was fun seeing Louis CK in a support role!

People have been talking up Andrew Dice Clay of all people in that. Can't wait to see it, looks like a nice rebound from his last movie. :yuck Plus Blanchett is great in everything.
Guardians Of The Galaxy is directed by the guy behind Movie 43, so it's probably going to suck.
Where did you get that from? Movie 43 is the Farrelly Brothers' pet project. James Gunn is the Slither and Super guy. You should at least watch those before you shit on him. They're like 90 minutes long and on Netflix streaming.

You can't ever tell anyways. Green Lantern was by the guy behind Casino Royale.

Movie 43 wasn't made by one dude. Even Bob Odenkirk directed a segment.

Wiki says he directed and wrote Movie 43.

Movie 43 had about 9 different segments, each with different writers/directors. James Gunn did one segment.
