Riddick

pretty enjoyable. suffers from some badly written moments here and there. not amazing. liked the fact that it's not some epic story and opts for a stripped down, small scale story. However it's a bit too much like Pitch Black so and as such feels quite a bit "samey". The monsters aren't really that interesting and are used as fodder too much, so they don't end feeling like a legitimate threat. the ending is kinda abrupt as well.

that said, Diesel definitely owns the role of Riddick. That character will live and die with him, that's for sure. every moment he's on screen is gold and thankfully there are some winners in the side characters. Specifically Katee Sackhoff and Batista.

so yeah, enjoyable. probably would have been better had it been written/directed by someone other than Twohy but then again it probably wouldn't have been made if it wasn't for Twohy. I definitely liked it overall. Not the best Vin Diesel movie this year though.

Riddick

I get the feeling the script was like one page long and just said "Riddick does something badass for 2 hours" THE END.

Not saying that's a bad thing, tho.  :whew

The Kings of Summer - Very good coming of age film. It goes through a lot of the basic coming of age tropes but in a slightly more unique way, with some pretty great and very likable leads that elevated the movie above the standard indie fare. Fantastic supporting cast too - Nick Offerman! Allison Brie! Megan Mullally! I enjoyed the first two thirds more than the last but there were certainly worse ways to spend an hour and a half and I'm definitely glad I gave it a view.

On an unrelated note, I really need to see Riddick.

Watched Star Trek Into Darkness this evening.

As usual I think this is a case of your expectations going in. I had heard so much negative from Trek fans that I went in sort of expecting not to like it but ended up liking it.

There are certainly dumb moments in it. Some things that don't make sense or are thrown in for silly sort of vague meaningless fan service. But at the end of the day I thought it was an entertaining popcorn movie and at least more entertaining for me than the deluge of super hero movies that generally dominate today. I also found it more entertaining than the the first Trek Movie reboot. I watched it with a non-trek fan and they enjoyed it a ton which probably says something about how you have to make a trek film nowadays if you are aiming for the mainstream.

Oh, and rarely does a modern shitty movie live up to the “cheesy fun" internet hype, but Sharknado did for me. My favorite thing about it is that even though Tara Reid is in just about the whole thing, she only has like five lines. It's like they said "We just need your name for the camp value, so please just shut the fuck up and cash your check at the liquor store."

Saw The World's End last night.  I fucking loved it.  The beginning is slow paced like Shaun and HF, but this one seemed even slower.  But once it started building momentum it was really great.  It had some of the best play on words out of all 3 movies.  And this one is probably my favorite Frost performance.  He's incredible in it.  Loved it.

It's a solid flick. I thought the cinematography was pretty great; i saw it in IMAX 3D though which is kinda like God jizzing into your eyes for a couple hours straight. I saw ST2009 first, then all the TV and movies, then Into Darkness, and I liked all three. I mean, it's a Star Wars movie but it's kinda what the series needs to inject some life into it.

Can someone explain the significance of Khan in the film, specifically how he's explained/shows up? He's not in the first film, so when I first saw the trailers I can't help but think most people were like "uhhh...ok?"

Khan is introduced through a similar backstory to original Star Trek's:
spoiler (click to show/hide)
He's part of a group of genetically superior transhumans who was both (a) cryogenically frozen and sent into space as a pre-warp colonization effort and (b) exiled from earth because they were taking over the planet and killing anyone they found inferior -- meaning "everyone" I guess.

It didn't make any sense to me, why we'd send out creepy murderers into space, as a colony, but then I remembered Australia.

This Kazakhstan-produced film features a mixture of stars that you would never expect in the same movie: Bolo Yeung (Bloodsport, Chinese Hercules), Don “The Dragon” Wilson (Bloodfist), Cary-Hiroyuki Tagawa (Showdown in Little Tokyo), Armand Assante (Judge Dredd), Tommy ‘Tiny’ Lister (Jackie Brown), Micheal Madsen (Reservoir Dogs) and Peter O’Toole (Lawrence of Arabia).

Yeah, some of it was definitely too fan-service-y. I would have enjoyed it more if it had been less direct in its re-creation of some scenes. I understand that, from the first movie, the implication is that The Universe Wants Kirk and Spock to Survive and Be Friends, because the aberrant new timeline introduced in the first movie needs to have as little affect as possible on the overall universe continuity.

But somehow I think that repeated dialog is going to have a meager effect compared to the entire missing planet Vulcan.

I had just moved to Japan and, after a couple months of immersion, I was so desperate to hear some English language that I paid Ą2100 (about US$18 -- 1993 dollars) to see it in a theater. I still cannot believe how ripped off I felt after that.

Rumor has it that Nancy Allen was only willing to appear for a few scenes, and under the condition that they kill off her character so she wouldn't have to appear again.

In retrospect, I wonder if she ever even saw the first movie. They could have had a Ms. RoboCop on the scene for RoboCop 4, no problemo.

btw anyone who hasn't see the Odyssey miniseries with Armand Assante should remedy that, it's awesome.

I remember wondering what he was up to just a few months ago. He seems like he'd be perfect in Game Of Thrones, as Doran Martell.

orion was so awesome, but man, when they went into desperation mode, the movies really went into the shitter.  robocop 3 is probably the poster boy for orion's bankruptcy.

i have no idea how a company could be so mismanaged as to have terminator, bill & ted, robocop, four best picture winners, a shit ton of great comedies, and still go tits up

new line and orion are both synonymous with 80's/90's films for me for some reason.

Yeah. It was a lot of little stuff that added up. Like calling up Spock on the Time Phone to ask him about Khan for no god damn good reason, or introducing tribbles when no one under 40 or non star trek geeks would know what such a thing was and in fact normal people would find confusing. It was a lot of little stuff like that where it's trying to pay homage but its really clunky and dumb.

That being said, at least I will mostly remember the plot of this movie. I've already forgotten everything about the first movie. I couldn't tell you the main plot in that one if my life depended on it.
