Gravity sucked. Are we sure this wasn't a Danny Boyle movie? Over-blown soundtrack, life-is-precious theme, tons of melodrama.  :-X :-X :-X :-X

No, it has a coherent third act.

I saw Frozen and it was a good, but not great movie.  Great art, some very funny bits of humor, a good start, good ending, middle meanders and the film doesn't really know what it wants to be.  Songs are ok, not great, not bad, just forgettable.  Worth a watch.

Kick Ass 2 - Abandons its attempt at "reality" much sooner than the first movie, which serves the overall work better. Even so, it is less evenly paced and presented, but it is still fun to watch a-dork-able characters trade one-liners. Hit Girl is the star again, and Dave/Kick Ass -- as well as his newly super-hero'd friends -- are oddly sidelined. There's setup for a sequel, but I kind of wish they'd just add 40 minutes or more to this film to resolve minor, existing questions.

In Bruges - I'd heard this was a dark comedy. I heard correctly. I will end up watching this again just to see how much lovely setup and callback there is in it. I really enjoyed this movie from a dialog and structure standpoint. Somewhat painful to watch as things start to fall apart, but impossible to look away. Great acting from Gleeson and Fiennes, though that shouldn't be surprising. I'd always felt Colin Farrell was overrated, but here he is very believable as a charming but dimwitted and short-tempered screw-up, at odds with his own guilt and frequently mistaken self-righteousness.

The Last Stand is pretty dumb and somewhat entertaining mostly. Tho the entire ending chase and fight was fairly terrible. I appreciated the use of squibs instead of cg gunshot wounds.

Yeah, I found myself thinking about it a number of times today, and then discussing it with friends; that's the sign of a real work of art to me: that I'm inspired to review it and contrast my experience with it with others. The theme of sacrifice and innocence, sin and punishment, choices and consequence. I will likely watch it again soon.

I watched this for the first time yesterday too.  I didn't think it was horrendous, but it was really, really videogamey and, I don't know, oddly empty?  I always wanted to see a Superman movie where he just cuts loose, and now that I've seen it, it feels like I just watched a God of War boss fight.

All I could think of is "where do they go from here"? Felt like they blew through about 3 movies worth of storyline in 2 hrs.

And I'm not big on DC canon but I the Krypton stuff seemed dumb, and having Lois work out who Clark is early also seemed rushed.

why give a fuck about the story? superman is the most boring character ever committed to a comic page, and they finally made him interesting by dropping the story and replacing it with three hours of spaceship lasers and kamehamehas. end result was a much better movie.

Police Story 2013 - Better than Chinese Zodiac (by a HUGE margin) but this isn't very good either.  It's a hostage drama which relies on huge coincidences to get the film's story to even start.  The editing is also very very busy.  It just was exhausting to watch.  Jackie Chan's acting in this was the best thing about it.  The few fights in the film weren't choreographed very well nor shot very well.  It's just not interesting at all.

Jackie Chan is not a serious actor. Why do they keep trying to position him as one? His earlier films worked, and worked really well, because he had a perfect mix of charisma, every-man qualities, and incredible physical talents, which were all best presented in movies that were just a lot of fun to watch.

Superman can be great if written well, that is probably not going to happen in film form anytime soon. So a movie where Superman wrecks shit is exactly what I'm looking for.

I was down with the idea, but the wrecking shit somehow lacked impact.  I mean, in a live action movie, you've got no choice but to go 100% CG for this kind of thing, but something about the way they did it really made me feel like I was watching a pre-baked cutscene in a video game.

You'd be surprised by how much wasn't pure CG.  I sure was.  In one of the special features they talk about how they frequently switch between real and CG so you'd use real as a reference and I think I did it the other way around.  But it didn't really bother me or keep me from enjoying the action scenes.

Re-watched Near Dark for the first time in 10 or more years. It doesn't hold up real well. Jenny Wright still holds an odd fascination for me though. Hrrrrnnnnggg.

Watched The Gift, possibly Sam Raimi's most restrained direction. A number of talented people in it, including unique choices of Keanu Reeves and Katie Holmes both cast against character as bad people. The suspense was pretty taught, and most of the surprises worked well. I wonder if the whole movie is largely a commentary on the helplessness of women in rape culture.

Saw the Star Trek film with Sherlock. Pretty cool, never seen the series so there was prolly a bunch of stuff that flew over my head. Like when the russian kid is told to go get a red shirt and he's so happy he might pee his pants. I guess that's a promotion?

Also saw the first hobbit film (extended cut, I think). surprised by how much singing there was.

Also watched Catching Fire over the weekend.  It's a good visual companion to the book but I don't think it stands on its own as either an adaptation (it really glosses over some events which provide a bit of motivation to the characters) nor does it really stand on its own as a film.  I don't know how well it would have worked had I not read the book first.

edit: it just feels like there was another hour of film which was cut to hell to get it to 2.5 hour running time

Maybe he's an idiot? In the series, wearing a red shirt meant the character rarely made it to the end of the episode.

It was such a prevalent script shortcut that, not only is "red shirt" common trekkie parlance for someone About to Die, it's also a good book by John Scalzi who takes the whole thing to task, philosophically:

update: Jesse Eisenberg is Lex Luthor

epic disaster is back on  :noah

that a controversial casting choice.

I mean, Jeremy Irons as Alfred, was Julian Sands, Richard Grant, or David Thewlis not available for the part of "creepy, lecherous, older British guy".

I don't see what else about that announcement would bother the fans though, nope, nothing at all.

actually the script leaked online and Alfred has a big role.  he convinces Bruce to marry his son, Damien, explaining that it's not incest between men.  the central plot is about Luthor trying to buy Bruce's land, so the marriage helps with the tax issue.

I think Jessie Esienberg will be able to pull off selfish assholish super genius quite well. I mean he easily (no offense) looks like one of those pretentious people that thinks they are so much better then everyone, but has a deep flaw. He kind of played the role in The Squid and the Whale. I think it's a good choice.

Maybe being a butler is just a ruse for 'Alfred' to steal all of Bruce Waynes money and then John McClane accidentally stumbles on to his plan and has to take him out.  A Dark Knight to Die Hard sounds like an awesome sequel.

I don't even remember TMNT that much and I believe I've seen a good portion of the cartoon, the FOX Kids Live Action show with the girl, the CG movie, and of course the movies. I mean they were always kind of dumb and well despite watching them as a kid I really have no nostalgia for them. I mean I don't believe they were ever good just like I kind of believe Transformers(outside of Beast Wars) was never actually good.

The only difference with these cartoons and Micheal Bay movies is that we get stupidity and trash. At least with the cartoons you can just excuse it with "oh these are cheap kids entertainment". Not so with the Micheal Bay movies which are really just kind of trashy.

I can't wait till 90s nostalgia really kicks in and we can get the Micheal Bay Power Rangers movie with DD bouncing Pink Ranger and the Black Ranger making the black jokes.
