It was such a prevalent script shortcut that, not only is "red shirt" common trekkie parlance for someone About to Die, it's also a good book by John Scalzi who takes the whole thing to task, philosophically:
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Redshirts_(novel)

huh, suddenly this makes more sense

Saw Her. I was entertained. I don't think I really got the message if there was one, though. Seemed a bit all over the place in that department. It felt really fresh however and the funny moments were super funny. More of a decent "what if" experiment than a coherent narrative.

Watched Boogie Nights again. Been itching for a while, and PSH's passing seemed like the appropriate time to get to it. God. That scene in the drug dealer's house at the end where the air is thick and the music is too loud and that chinese kid is chucking firecrackers around is soooooooooooooo good.

Saw a few flicks on the plane on the way back from 'Murica.

The Conjuring - The dude from Insidious stars as '70s demonologist, Ed Warren, opposite a wonderfully believable and subdued Lily Taylor. This movie eschews computer effects and sticks with traditional effects, beautifully composed shots, slickly timed editing, and creepy-as-hell sound design to work the heebie-jeebies to the fullest. I know it's supposedly based on a real case the Warrens investigated, but emphasizing the undeniable proof shown in the footage they manage to take makes it hard to take seriously. If such footage actually existed in 1971, well, we'd live in a different world now. Then again, it appears the Warrens were also involved with the highly questionable Amityville haunting. The movie's great though.

The Lone Ranger - Gore Verbinski turns another Disney ride into slick visual tourism over handheld storytelling. There is nothing new here: The hero is shown to be a Perceval type: good-hearted but naive. Johnny Depp is a sidekick who steals the show with humorous physical antics, speech affectations, and possible insanity. The bad guys are really bad. The action finale isn't nearly as over-the-top as the whirlpool pirate ship battle from PotC3, but is still pretty outlandish. In the end, though, when the William Tell Overture begins to play, I got chills and hype and all kinds of excited about watching The Lone Ranger kick butt. The only bit which really stuck in my craw was the bookending device with Tonto as narrator of the story, attempting to ground The Lone Ranger in our last-century reality, telling the story of his life with the Ranger to a boy attending the circus which ostensibly employs Tonto. The entirety of the movie's main story takes place in an idealized white-hats-vs-black-hats Old West, is as mythic as anything in the PotC series; bringing the sad, real-world narrator in as a device is as useless and frustrating as Suckerpunch's conversely confounding decision to put the entirety of the movie into a fantasy realm.

Escape Plan - Arnie and Sly return to their '80s action movie roots as antiheroes with an attitude, while Sam Neill picks up a rent payment as his Jurassic Park payouts have begun to slow down. The biggest surprise in this movie was how much I wished Fiddy Cent had more screen time. It feels like there was a bunch of additional footage with his character left on the floor, along with whatever side story was originally included with Sly's conspicuously missing child, which would have otherwise neatly tied into Arnie's reveal at the end. I spent most of the movie thinking Jim Caviezel was Joseph Fiennes, though his performance was much more uneven than either Fiennes would ever provide. If you like '80s action movies, this is a great movie. If you don't, WHAT IS WRONG WITH YOU?

Marvel's Iron Man and Hulk: Heroes United - What a crapfest. This was listed with the new releases, and I didn't realize it was a kids movie. Crap animation, crap visuals, crap dialog -- I lasted five minutes. Disney is really stress testing how far they can milk that Avengers' success. Man, seriously, this just made me sad.

The Dark Knight - I was afraid I would dislike this movie on my third review of it, but it really works. That whole opening scene, and The Joker just running roughshod over all of Gotham's criminal underworld, so good. The buildup over Harvey Dent also works so well, and is even more mean-spirited for fans who know how this must inevitably end.

The Lincoln Lawyer -  That was good!  Really entertaining courtroom thriller.  It's not a genre I really watch, hell I don't think they make more than one courtroom movie every 5 years.  The last one I remember was Erin Brockovitch and before that Tom Cruise in the The Firm; but anyhow it was the first courtroom thriller I've seen since I actually became a lawyer and it was kind of cool getting all the stuff they were talking about instantly with judicial process and all that.  I mean, it's a bit silly at times, and it's sooooo fast-paced where they ask the witnesses like 2 questions and stop instead of an hour with the witness on stand, and 30 second opening statements instead of 15 mins, but overall I thought it was pretty accurate and fun though I don't do criminal so I'm not entirely sure how criminal trails work.  Also the movie is exactly why I don't do criminal, there's a lot of nasty stuff there and heavy conscious questioning.  I have a friend who loves being a prosecutor though, so some people dig it.

Also I'm trying to catch up on the McConaughey resurgence as I really haven't seen any of his comeback film outside his cameo in Wolf of Wall Street and one or two other films.  Now I gotta watch Mud, Magic Mike, Killer Joe and Dallas Buyers Club and then maybe True Detective when the season ends.

World War Z - Was alright, mainly because of the re-written and re-shot 1/3rd act which was the best part of the film.  The action scenes in the first 2/3rds are just so ridiculous with no plot/character development/no anything at all and just non-stop chasing as Mr. invincible gets into the worst cliche situations over and over again.  There are some good scenes and it's entertaining enough, but it's really only the last 15 mins that are a good zombie flick and have some character.  Obviously was nothing like the book and was totally set up for a sequel, but it was an ok popcorn zombie flick.

Ya, saw a late night show with the gf because I really like the humor in Lego Marvel Super Heroes (my first Lego game) and saw this was getting great reviews.  Really had a good time.  I like how because it's Lego they can get away with a lot more what would be messed up stuff than most kids movies and thus they have a lot more freedom in good humor and it pays off.  Was also surprisingly charming and a good movie by the end.  Gonna be a kids classic I think.

finally saw Hugo thanks to MoMA.  It was pretty good.  Quite charming.  I felt it a bit long.  My GF was totally into it.

Then last night I finally saw the 1978 Invasion of the Body Snatchers.  If I had seen this in the past (likely) I didn't remember it at all but enough of the scenes had reached a kind of cultural awareness that when they popped up there was a brief moment of recognition.   So that was cool

Cottage Country - black comedy from Canada where a guy is going to propose to his girlfriend at the family cottage but then his brother shows up with his Russian girlfriend.  It's cute and kind of twisty, but not great.  not a bad way to spend an hour and a half but there are better films on Netflix

I just remembered. I watched This Is The End on the plane, and forgot that I had seen it. That should pretty much tell you all you need to know. I had really wanted to like this movie, but it felt remarkably narcissistic and generally wasn't very funny. Though everyone plays themselves, the parts which seemed to be self-deprecating came off as insincere in-jokes. Meh.

Is that the one where the whole black comedy is played out in the preview?

I went on my own (on a free ticket) to watch this last night, and I concur... its fucking awesome. (as is... everything, obviously)
The whole theme of following your imagination rather than the instructions, and the big payoff towards the end - was just expertly executed - and I loved all of the jokes. Bad cop was great!  :lol

spoiler (click to show/hide)
The fourth wall toy-story style stuff where it revealed Will Ferrell was actually 'the man upstairs' and the one really threatening to glue everything together was amazing and had my heart in my throat, the way it led in to the son's appeal and the final Duplo-related joke was great.

I only watched in 2D sadly, but I'm gonna take my 5 year old nephew this weekend for the 3D showing. He loves Lego Marvel Super Heroes, Lego City, Lego Batman etc -- I think he's gonna love the fuck out of it!

Lego Movie

I knew going into it that it was going to be a kids movie. That didn't stop the movie from being all sorts of AWESOME! For once being in a movie with a bunch of kids was actually a good thing.  They kind of added to the atmosphere of the experience. I was more impressed by the movies visuals than anything, it's mind boggling good. At points in the movie I was wondering if I was watching a stop action movie and other points I was thinking it was digitized lego's. Movie was sold out at most of the theaters around here which is crazy considering how many we have around here.

Robocop- I liked this a lot. They has some classic lines from the original in this one but kinda felt like they had a check list and had to find anyway possible to get those lines in there. At the start and around the middle of the film they played the original theme, wish they played it more. And Oldman's character was the best.

It's all Nolan Batman's fault. People loved it because it was serious and grim because people think Batman should be that. Everything DC does seems like its trying to ride that wave.

Thats not a problem. Who the hell cared about Iron Man and Thor? It was Spiderman and maybe the X-men that people cared about. If they had made a good Green Lantern movie then maybe they'd have something but they haven't been able to do use these characters well outside of cartoons.

Iron Man is cool, and has always been cool; the issue was always finding an actor to bring that to life. I'll give you Thor, nothing cool about that shit. But hey, Marvel was smart enough to cast a large chested man of a man to put some chicks in theater seats.

Guardians of The Galaxy? If that movie does well I'll know that I'm truly out of touch. That shit looks stupid.

Flash?
Martian Manhunter? :heh

I forget who mentioned it before, but captain marvel shazam would be great.  I'd be Big with super powers.

and woman woman is going to be in batman vs superman man of steel 2 world's finest flight of fight into darkness in the same capacity as the raccoon.  the main character in guardians of the galaxy is another buff white dude.  the white whale is a female led superhero action movie that doesn't suck butt and tank like catwoman or elektra (this is real movie--honest, look it up).  disney-marvel ain't touching that either.  that said, dc/wb should've maybe taken the risk seeing as how woman woman is arguably the most famous female superhero.  but that said, you could argue disney-marvel should take a risk and make a black panther movie.

what the film industry really needs is meteor man vs blankman

Nope, the stacks and stacks of unsold Iron Man issues at the comic shop I managed circa 91-93 back up no one giving a shit about Iron Man.

I'm ambivalent about a Captain Marvel movie, even though he's my second favorite comic character. DC has fucked that character beyond recognition over the years, and I don't think the Golden Age version would find an audience in modern times. He's one of those characters who belongs to a particular time and mindset, and sticks out awkwardly when they try to cram him into modern continuity.  If they do, though, I think Jerry O'Connell has the looks and personality for the part.

I never want to see a live-action Plastic Man movie, especially if they base it off the shitmitt script the Wachowskis wrote. That's another character who doesn't work as well in modern times, partially because no one seems to get what made Jack Cole's stuff so awesome. It's basically a Tex Avery cartoon printed on paper, and Plastic Man is the straight man. Here's this weird ex-gangster dude who can shapeshift and twist up into funny shapes, and he's the most normal one in the comic. A well-animated cartoon might work, though.

no no no fuck no you are NOT getting away with this revisionist history bullshit.  nobody ever liked iron man, he was considered lame as hell.  i know, because i was a fan of him and telling that to people was like telling them you picked the yoda action figure instead of darth vader or han solo.  they stuck big writer after big writer on him trying to get the concept to take and the best thing they could come up with was to make him an alcoholic and brush him off panel for a while.  nobody gave a SHIT about iron man pre-RDJ and nobody is going to give a shit about him post-RDJ, i can guarantee it.

Your friends sound like losers. Most people I knew were familiar with Iron Man and liked him. Tony Starks was popular before the film.

the belly flop that Green Lantern pulled undoubtedly scared Warner Bros./DC from whatever other non grim-dark plans they may have had.
and if people didn't shivagit about Iron Man prior to the film, that would have been doubly true Thor and even moreso for Green Lantern

budgeted at about the same as The Avengers.  Ouch.

The Godfather

Being a child who grew up during 90s parody-mania, it was hard to take this movie seriously seeing it for the first time. I was distracted thinking about which Leslie Nielsen movie or Simpsons episode I remember basically every scene from.

That shit looks stupid.

no no no fuck no you are NOT getting away with this revisionist history bullshit.  nobody ever liked iron man, he was considered lame as hell.  i know, because i was a fan of him and telling that to people was like telling them you picked the yoda action figure instead of darth vader or han solo.  they stuck big writer after big writer on him trying to get the concept to take and the best thing they could come up with was to make him an alcoholic and brush him off panel for a while.  nobody gave a SHIT about iron man pre-RDJ and nobody is going to give a shit about him post-RDJ, i can guarantee it.

His cartoon was pretty popular down here :yeshrug

Your friends sound like losers. Most people I knew were familiar with Iron Man and liked him. Tony Starks was popular before the film.

Flash? (Image removed from quote.)
Martian Manhunter? :heh
Wonder Woman in the 21st century? (Image removed from quote.)
Aqua Man? (Image removed from quote.)

Flash kicks ass. Wonder Woman kicks ass and could sell VERY well to the female audience depending on how they go about it. Aqua Man :yeshrug If they make it like the 52 reboot, I'd like to see it. You probably aren't too old to remember this, but The Flash has always been a fan favorite enough to have his own live action tv show. I watched that shit every week. He was the first super hero I was introduced to, after Batman. And he's piff. SHUT UP. DON'T TALK ABOUT FLASH

I didn't know a single kid who watched that cartoon. We were all about X-Men, Spiderman, Batman TAS, Batman and Robin, Justice League. I watched the 70's justice league every fucking day on cartoon network. DC's line up is nothing to scoff at. They're just really bad at marketing it I think.
