I mean I think Stephen Chow's King of Comedy is the superior film here.

I saw It Comes At Night last night and man the marketing on that is even more deceptive than it was for The Witch.  And just like The Witch it's a fantastic movie that will likely suffer blowback from it.  I'd hesitate to really even call it a horror movie.  Similarly to Krisha it's a very slow burn of tension and mystery that just explodes in the final act.  The actors are all pretty great especially in the final scenes where they all put in some really strong performances.

Hmmm, I know absolutely nothing about this movie other than it's an indie horror flick with good buzz. Planning on seeing it this weekend and hope it's good. I like slow burn stuff like House of the Devil, but I thought the Witch was kinda boring for a lot of it. The Invitation was somewhere in the middle.
The marketing misdirection and the fact that I like both is probably the most comparable part to The Witch.  I didn't find either boring in the least, but the content is very different.  I can say I wouldn't compare to House of the Devil at all though.  The atmosphere and the way tension is built is just too different.  Like I said, it's not really horror in my opinion.  It'd be better if more people knew that going in.

Finally, we've gotten around to the question that berniebro alt-righters like Red Letter Media don't want asked: When Will Wonder Woman Be a Fat, Femme Woman of Color?
Quote
On Paradise Island, there are Black warriors in addition to white ones, which is a good start, but other women of color are missing. Also, while the female warriors are strong and ass-kicking, they all have tall, thin body types and they all could be models on a runway. In fact, in a pivotal battle scene, Wonder Woman struts across the battlefield as if on a catwalk. As a result, their physical strength plays second fiddle to their beauty, upholding the notion that in order to access power women must be beautiful in a traditional way. Especially with the body positivity movement gaining steam, the film could have spotlighted female warriors with fat, thick and short body types. While people have said that warriors can’t be fat, some of our best paid male athletes are, particularly linebackers on the football field, and no one doubts their physical strength.

Another problem is that the story’s overt queerness gets sublimated by heteronormativity. Diana comes from a separatist commune of women who have intentionally chosen to live without men. In one of the first scenes between Diana and Steve, she explains that she read 12 volumes of a series on sex that concluded that while men are required for reproduction, when it comes to female pleasure, they’re unnecessary. While a love story develops between them, a requirement in superhero stories, Diana thankfully doesn’t compromise her integrity for him.

In the end, Wonder Woman concludes that “only love can save the world.” While this may be true, I’ve never heard any other superhero say so. Why couldn’t Wonder Woman fight for justice and eliminate bad guys without having to in the end make it about love? Perhaps a more interesting question is: Why don’t male superheroes do the same?

that movie has full stop, the funniest scene I've ever seen a film. It also has the definitive John Woo spoof in it. Other than that its uneven amd schmaltzy. But man, that one scene...

Oh, and Wonder Women is solid, if not spectacular. Gets a lot of things right, overlong and overstuffed and loses momentum by the end. Still a lot better than most blockbusters (faint praise I suppose).

Its really been holding Spider man back as a franchise.  Don't know why they didn't do it sooner.  Also Marisa Tomei is off-white so she fills the diversity role.  It was a very smart decision on Marvel's part.

As a random basis of comparison, I always thought the departed was pretty over-rated.

Saw Wonder Woman last night and Guardians of the Galaxy 2 this morning. DC Universe finally made a movie worth seeing! I was skeptical of her, but Gal Gadot played her role well. Guardians just felt like more of the same, which isn't a bad thing. I really enjoyed both.

Neither of those were a Universal joint, though: Lion's Gate for the former and Fox for the latter.

:rofl

The thing is, they had this, ready to go before anyone else: the Brendan Fraser MUMMY movie was clearly positioning Fraser's "Rick O'Connell" character as an Indiana Jones stand-in, but with a consistent entourage. They could have moved on to Rick O'Connell Vs. The Vampire, and continued with the Werewolf, Frankenstein's Monster, and the Creature from the Black Lagoon.

Instead, they decided to blow their wad on an entirely separate, clearly franchise-intended Van Helsing — which fell on its face.

I've seen all of them save the last one i think? I didn't see the one with Lou Ferigno which was the last one. Kimbo Slice was also in the one with Billy Zane.

I honestly don't remember much about it because I think this was a time when I was especially manic and would just get blitzed and watch trash like this along with every dolph lundgren movie known to man during any free time i had  so yeah...

I do remember the second one though because every single woman in it is hot as hell and it felt like a weird power rangers movie:

Doesn't look bad, and it's the right kinda material you want to remake imo. The original was a solid and clever enough movie but wasn't big enough that tons of ppl remember it (or are particularly fond of it). Perfect vehicle for a bunch of young and good looking actors...much like the original was.

The more I hear about this new Mummy the more I'm resolute in my 15+ year opinion that the Brandan Frasier Mummy was a great Egypt-focused* adventure movie that paid homage to the original horror trappings (in the first third or so) and that the sequel was an awesome if bloated action movie (with annoying kid, sure) with a hell of a payoff. Also John Hannah is the fucking man (see also, Spartacus.)

Tomb of the Dragon Emperor tried to recapture that magic but fell pretty flat (no Rachel Weisz was also a huge bummer.)

But yeah. I'm a huge Cruise fan and I might have even seen this if reviews had been mixed or better. But 17% + all the shit RLM went over? Nah brah.

Never thought I'd say this, but give me Brandan Frasier over Tom Cruise.

* How the fuck do you make a Mummy movie but strip out all the cool Egyptian shit? Goddamnit it Kurtzman.

spoiler (click to show/hide)
Frasier's best non-Mummy movie remains Bedazzled and I'm ALSO still resolute that that movie is awesome.

Yeah. The second one is often considered a stinker but really I feel it was vindicated when the fourth Indiana Jones sort of lifted the last big action shots from it (which tells how bankrupt the whole thing was, having to copy from its imitators). Arnold Vosloo is really great in both. Then again I was a big fan of Sommers including Van Helsing (despite the fact this one was really, really too much of everything).

That was exactly my take on it. The plot device of the movie is adaptable enough to where you can still make it fresh and the characters of that movie are kind of interchangable.

Kind of like when they remake heist movies. Those seem to work more often than they don't.

I saw Jay of RLM say that it's basically an hour of tension on the premise of who left the door open. Sort of fantastic when you're expecting a zombi to come crashing through the house at any moment and ruin the restraint of the rest of the film.
