IT pulled in $51 on Friday alone.  :o That's more than Dark Tower has made in total. :lol

What were those scenes? You could post them in spoilers just in case.

Some of the scenes added to the mystery of the town, others were much better in the final version. Small changes that didn't really impact my feeling of the movie one way or the other. It was all good either version for me.

We filled out surveys and I think that lead to reaffirming some decisions that are in the final cut. I got an additional questionnaire from using my free tickets to see the movie. It doesn't mentioned what was changed but asked several times if I noticed any differences negatively or positively in the final film and included pictures to remind me of scenes. Hopefully I get a chance to do this type of movie stuff again in the future with Justice League (I want to see this mess) around the corner.

spoiler (click to show/hide)
4th of july
spoiler (click to show/hide)
Longer scene with the Losers talking about their experiences and the cops overhear them and remind them of the curfew. A bystander behind the scene is staring down the audience when the cops talk to them.
[close]
Would have liked this in the movie as it gave a bit more mystery to the town and the adults living there.

Bev's apartment
spoiler (click to show/hide)
In the scene where Bev is being attacked by her father in the bathroom it is shown that Pennywise has been her father for sometime controlling him similarly to Billy.
[close]
Shorter cut worked a lot more effectively I think.

Eddie's house
spoiler (click to show/hide)
Longer scene between him and his mom where she talks about protecting him due to the curfew. The scene starts with a phil donahue dialog on tv and you can overhear the curfew warning video begin to be played in the background, same one used several times throughout the movie.
[close]
It worked better and the lines from Eddie were better delivered in this scene than in the final. Also it added confirmation that the adults know about the potential sacrifice that has been asked of them.
Pennywise's caravan
spoiler (click to show/hide)
Scene is mostly the same. The screening did not have the awesome line from Finn. The dancing scene was also absent.
[close]
Best changes of the whole movie probably. Really punched that scene up a lot with just a little extra dialog. Kinda just felt like Office Space printer scene happened all of the sudden instead of having the lead up with Finn.

Chapters End
spoiler (click to show/hide)
Same shot different angle of Bill and Bev kissing showing a red balloon floating into the deadlights in the distance glistening like the sun on the horizon then the shot faded to Chapter One.
[close]
I found this cheesy kinda, but it worked. Glad it was changed. Stinger credit also had a balloon in it which the final does not have.

Saw IT and really dug it. As much as I've loved the past couple years of higher concept horror being big, like Get Out, It Follows, Babadook, it's nice to have a really solid, straightforward monster flick. A couple of the kids needed a bit more development, I guess. For being over 2 hours, this really didn't feel long.

IT was good. Not particularly scary (just enough) and was glad it didn't rely much on jump scares. From the trailers I thought it was going to be darker, but it still felt more like a fun coming of age pg-13 monster movie which a few "fucks" and gore shots that pushed it to an R rating. Haven't read the book in 20 years, don't remember much outside the major plot points and it was pretty satisfying. Didn't like how

The kids were still being stupid in the end and splitting up constantly, and the Barbara getting kidnapped so all the boys can save her scene A) didn't make sense because how did she get from her bathroom to the sewer when it's established all the other missing children/murders were near sewer entries and B) was kinda a lame stereotype scene.
[close]

Otherwise, was cool. Not sure if it's the best Stephen King adaptation (I mean The Shining is a way better movie but it's pretty different than the book), but up there.

Trailers definitely showed too much. Can't think of almost a single scene in the movie with Pennywise that wasn't in the trailer. Will avoid the trailer for pt.2

I've never actually seen Misery. When I was a teen and they made a movie of it, it just seemed kind of uninteresting? It's like a woman whose a crazy fan kidnaps and tortures a guy movie? The rest yeah, but I'd add Shawshank Redemption of course. I also really like Frank Darabount's adaptation of The Mist.

Haven't seen The Dead Zone either. Been meaning to watch it sometime, especially since it's Walken and Christopher Walken is awesome.

Check out Misery for sure. It's from Rob Reiner's mega-hot streak and Kathy Bates absolutely kills in it. Similarly, Christopher Walken delivers a fantastic performance that couldn't have been even approximated by another actor in Dead Zone.

I forgot about The Mist. I'd probably rank that similarly to It.

I've never been a big Shawshank booster. It's certainly a good movie, but I feel like it gets way more credit than it deserves. That said, I haven't seen it lately so it's difficult to criticize it. I mean, I may not even have real points of criticism about it. I don't remember there being anything to complain about. I just remember not finding it great.

Darabont's version of The Mist is one of my favorite horror movies, and the best Stephen King movie I've yet seen. Most of what makes King's prose work doesn't translate to movies, and it doesn't have to. The Mist, oddly, has so much straight up character conflict in it, that it /does/ work as a movie. The ending, also, jesus what a mindfuck. King's stated that he prefers the movie's ending to his own.

Interesting. I've actually had a few people recommend that movie to me but I haven't got around to it yet. I know its a guy ritchie film and I normally like his stuff but I know the reviews for it weren't good.

I did like the man from uncle film he did before that which I thought was really under-rated.

I think if you appreciate Guy Ritchie, you will like the movie. But if you're looking for a more traditional 'board and sword' type of movie, you'll hate it.

I didn't like it, because it just was never the movie I wanted. Even though the talent and the look was right. I think it was that juxtaposition of things that made the movie even more frustrating.

Wonder Woman:   :yeshrug better than MOS/SS/BvS, well written, well acted for the most part, but it didn't really grab me. A lot of really bad looking CGI and green screen distracted me. Shit was looking like modern Burly Brawl at some points. Completely unnatural, floaty physics and off looking models. I wouldn't tell anyone it sucked or anything, but the CGI and overly used slow motion took me out of a lot of the action stuff.

I'm trying not to get my hopes up too much. I know it's better than the other DC movies in the last five years, but that's not enough to heap praise on it. In a sane world, saying "it's almost as good as a MCU movie" shouldn't be enough to warrant a viewing.

But I'll watch Gal Gadot slide around and kick ass, and marvel at her gorgeous armpits, so that's enough for me.  :-*

The Nile Hilton Incident is a traditional crime noir in every faucet, except for its setting. It is January of 2011, the Arab Spring is in its first days, and an inconveniently only sorta-corrupt cop needs to solve a murder in Cairo before it gets classified a suicide. Its a great movie, it gets to invert some noir tropes(as theres bone deep corruption of every civil service, getting things done honestly is tricky). Its deeply cynical like any good noir ought to be, but here, crucially, the cynicism is less about 'people suck' and more about 'our society sucks'. There's some excellent location shoots standing in for Egypt, and the whole thing just seeps lived-in details of life in a pseudo-functioning state. Its the best time I've had in a miserable place in a long time.

Honestly it's better than the median MCU movie. Maybe not as good as the top-tier ones like Civil War, but it's way better than Iron Man 3 or whatever you'd consider an average one.

I'm actually really fond of Iron Man 3: A Very Shane Black Christmas, and I enjoyed Civil War on the first viewings, but it was not-so-great on reflection (and subsequent viewings). But I'm happy to hear WW is pretty good in any case.

This trailer and Magnet's pedigree tricked me into watching this gorgeous but unfathomable film. I suspect that this film is allegorical of a particular culture or history. It made no sense to me. Toward the end, I thought, "I bet you cut to the fucking credits after this, you posturing European piece of shit."

It did.

I was trying to be charitable. It's actually hard to put into words how much I hate Iron Man 3.

Not only did it barely work on any level, it also butchered one of the best Iron Man comic stories.

And the Mandarin is a dude who makes jokes about how that dump he just took totally destroyed a bathroom!

my largest issue with wonder woman is probably that it felt too long

actually this is a common comic book film thing post-dark knight, especially when they get up to 145-150 minutes (165 minutes for the dark knight rises lol) and they don't have the plot to properly fill it and the last acts seem to drag on forever and sometimes ramp up twice

deadpool and doctor strange both came in under 2 hours and didn't seem anywhere near as oppressive as civil war or ww which both had crescendo moments and then started up again to stumble over the finish line twenty minutes or more later

it doesn't help that many of them have pacing issues to begin with, but then i'm rather surprised that more people don't have issues with say, nolan's pacing in tdk, tdkr and inception...

dunkirk coming in at 106 minutes is the most surprising thing about it

I never said it was bad. It was just a crazy fucking movie for lots of reasons. And knowing some of the history between lawrence and the director really made some of that even harder to watch. As an experience I'm glad I saw it in theaters, but boy did it make me uncomfortable and it really wasn't what the missus was expecting. I knew what I was getting into as I love his other works, but this one hits me in a way the others didn't.

Regarding Lawrence and Aronofsky...
spoiler (click to show/hide)
I read the film, at least in part, as a savage self-critique. Which makes his current relationship with the star of that film particular even crazier. Also, Javier Bardem and Aronofsky were born only weeks apart. Life imitates art much, Darren?
[close]
I really liked the film, but its also not wholly succesful at everything it tries to do. But man oh man, even for a guy with his history, even knowing that mother! was gonna be a strange one, I was still not prepared for this ballsy, batshit, pretentious and hilarious film. It creates its own genre, even as its exploding others. Its so friggin audacious its hard to believe its ftom an established filmmaker and has actual movie stars in it and is playing in malls across the country.

The closest thing that comes to mind is when David Cronenberg used up all his cred from The Fly to make Dead Ringers, and that somehow got to be sold to the masses. But this is even less commercial than that, or even, hell his own Requiem for a Dream. Anhways, if you've got a taste for his films, and bizzare shit in general this is an easy recommendation.

Inherent Vice was like that. I waited until it came out on DVD and bailed on it about 3/4 of the way through. I got what I wanted out of it and didn't feel like I wasted my time.

I think Wonder Woman gets so many accolades because it is being compared to the rest of the DC cinematic universe, which is garbage, and also comparing it to all previous female lead superhero movies, of which they are very few and also garbage. It's competency makes it shine like a beacon in comparison.

Personally, I thought it was pretty good, and enjoyed it for what it was.

Apropos of getting old, I am watching the Martin Scorsese concert film of the Rolling Stones shine a light. There is so much genuine joy in this movie, it is just amazing. This is exactly what I needed to watch this morning, watching old dudes do their thing competently, and loving it well into their later years.  I got a find out if Scorsese has directed more concert films because this was just astounding.  These old guys are significantly thinner and more ropey, with better rhythm than I've ever had.
