Holy craaaaaap

Just saw The Endless and I had no idea of its relation to their first movie Resolution going in, but The Endless is the fucking connected to Resolution and the way it's handled is great, so great and not only does it make The Endless a good movie on its own, but it actually improves Resolution by giving a satisfying ending which Resolution lacked. This was very fanservice for people who'd seen Resolution.

I still think Resolution is a better film, and their best film and most interesting film, but The Endless, like Spring is a good flick. Sorta like the SH1->SH3 except if 3 actually was good.

Seriously, if you like Sci-fi or Lovecraft, go watch Resolution, Spring and The Endless. So much fun. Moorhead & Benson are my new favorite indie writer/directors of recent.

*edit* still kind of reeling from the coolness of HUGE SPOILERS FOR THE ENDLESS FANSERVICE
spoiler (click to show/hide)
Going back inside Resolution and getting the actors back and in character and interacting with the main character from this movie. That was so cool and satisfying (especially since the Resolution characters are incredibly likeable duo).
[close]

Man, I was giddy as fuck in the 2nd half of this movie  :lol

At the end of the day my only complaint is Moorhead & Benson are not actors and while they did ok and don't bring the movie down in any way, they are a far cry from the likeable charming casts of Resolution & Spring. But it makes sense why they both decided to act in this one after you've seen Resolution & The Endless.

I thought for sure that was being directed by Guy Ritchie, but apparently it isn't. Also, the part is the middle where Robin Hood sans hood is talking to some lady about Robin Hood was lifted, like, verbatim from The Dark Knight. :lol

Oh boy, even more cinematic universes coming up.
Like what tho... dc just shat the bed, the whole universal monster universe was aborted in the third trimester, all that sort of remains is the Harry Potter prequel series and The Rock playing the same person across three franchises.

As much as I dog on the MCU films for being samey and for being largely uncommitted to standing on their own as a slice of entertainment, I have to credit them for actually building this monster that now occupies 3-4 slots a year, successfully, in an iterative and intelligent way. This is the new Star Wars, and I guarantee that Disney would have pushed the SW ancillaries WAY harder & more frequently if it didn’t take off like this. Looking it up, they started the lucasfilm acquisition about a year before the avengers broke the box office. I have no doubt this was plan B.

Robin Hood men in tights was hilarious tho
That was a Mel brooks movie not a Robin Hood movie.

Also, movie was good, however....

spoiler (click to show/hide)
It runs a very serious risk of becoming terrible in its second half.  It really depends on how they handle the resurrection of some or all of these now dead characters.  Since they've already introduced time reversal it is easy to imagine literally every dead character getting a mulligan which would be god awful.  And some of the characters they "killed off" are already contracted for future films sooooo....
[close]
I pondered this for a second and have deduced exactly what will happen based on recent money moves
spoiler (click to show/hide)
since half the universe is kaput, what will happen is not time reversal but instead some other streams of reality/dimensions will be woven into the mix or otherwise introduced or discovered, our heroes searching for cosmic answers blah blah etc... so once the dust settles and all the dusted good guys get brought back into the fray, and at the very end everyone kind of returns to what they think is earth 1/reality 1 but is in fact different, One of our heroes sees a news report of some kind of strange activity, cute little references to guy in yellow spandex with claws, a stretchy dude etc, maybe even a cool X/F4 logo pops up in the periphery...CUT TO BLACK NERDS JIZZ EVERYWHERE

Watched The Black Panther.

What a pointless generic mediocrity, half the movie is an ugly Matrix 3/Star Wars Prequels style CGI-fest introducing Wakanda and its primitive ways, as if such an advanced society would ever be like that, then the fight happens the neocon villain who we're kind of supposed to sympathize with takes over, the hero gets expectedly resurrected and he wins. So the lesson of the movie I guess was don't be neocon or Trump and that black people will have societies with primitive customs and third-world country look no matter how advanced they get.

Killmonger is the most interesting character of the movie but not by much, he's a classic comic book villain that became bad to avenge something and wants to take over the world to make it better. He's 2 comic book villain cliches in one and I would obviously not have a problem with it if he was a little less one-dimensional and more fleshed out. It's impressive how even though the movie doesn't have that much action it still manages to not develop the characters properly. As for action I guess the casino scene was kind of good, everything else had horrible GCI that at times looked like movies from late 90's early 00's.

Actually the lesson of the movie was that you shouldn't keep all traditions and sometime's it's good (and necessary) to break with tradition. There is no story about how "Africans will always be primitive",  the story is that despite being so advanced, Wakanda believed in tradition, to its detriment.

That part of my post was obviously a tongue in cheek way to mock the third-world backrounds and primitive traditions depicted in the movie, of course there's no story about how "Africans will always be primitive". And I think the movie makes it pretty clear that the general lesson was about isolationism and hot helping their own race not traditions in general; with the exception of the sister that shows some contempt against tradition at the beginning there's no indication from what I remember that it's against it, at least as a general plot "lesson" is concerned. Marvel movies aren't discreet or nuanced, if that was the lesson at the end of the movie he wouldn't have just bought the apartment complex he would have done something about the traditions too. Hell, even after he dies there was no "fuck your stupid traditions" speech you'd expect from the sister if that was part of the plotline. Unless I missed it, I mean I did start looking at my phone a lot after the first half, the movie was just not interesting.

And speaking of Marvel movies, the 12 year old Marvel fans are melting down because PewDiePie made a video shitting on Marvel movies which I thought was pretty good:

I mean, not really, but it has a certain charm. If you like 80s horror flicks, you’ll dig it. I love them, so I kinda love it. I don’t really know how to talk about this type of movie. Anyway, it’s a pretty common movie for me to toss on at night in order to fall asleep to (I like having a movie play as I fall asleep).

And speaking of Marvel movies, the 12 year old Marvel fans are melting down because PewDiePie made a video shitting on Marvel movies which I thought was pretty good:

What traditions in Wakandan culture was he supposed to have shown he did something about as the movie ends in Oakland? Opening Wakanda up itself is breaking THE single most important tradition in the history of the nation. Anyway, exactly the same thing as all the nerds in the Thor movies dressing and speaking in centuries old ways despite being even more advanced than Wakanda. They're doing dwarfs forging hammers and axes in a kiln when they got interdimensional light travel and the most powerful magic shit in the universe.  And the same reason why all the Dr. Strange related characters dress and speak the way they speak. "Marvel isn't discrete or nuanced" is exactly the point. Everything is a stereotype or at least cliche to have an easy visual reference for every character type/group/setting that is easy to immediately grasp even for dumb children the movies are allegedly made for.

He could have mentioned for example that he's ending the barbaric succession ritual that was the main plot point of the movie? And yeah you do have a point about Thor doing the same, the problem is that Thor wasn't marketed to Scandinavians as the movie that would show how far they can go or something which is admittedly more about the meta of the movie than the movie itself.

But ignoring even that, the main theme of Valhalla is that it's technology that is so advanced that looks like magic and fantasy so it kind of makes sense, what doesn't make sense is showing a super advanced city from afar, then a third world looking market, then a super advanced lab then a distinguished mentally-challenged ritual fight to the death with bad CGI crowd cheering. I mean I get the whole stereotype thing Marvel is doing but what a clusterfuck that was.

Watched Black Panther

Not sure what all the hoopla was about. It was a fairly straightforward super hero action movie. Biggest downside for me was that everything that happened had so little consequence for the plot.
It would've been cool if Wakanda's started inciting the riots and then their king had to talk them down and bring everyone back together. Instead of the Hobbit shooting down the ships before they left.
The big bad guy's kingship lasted shorter than Anthony Scaramucci did in his job.

I did like the action scenes, it had some great characters and overall I found it entertaining.

However, the most cultural important blah blah blah lol give me a break.  :doge

Larger question: Now that we've achieve peak Josh-Brolinverse, what happens when Cable meets Thanos?

They kill him off and recast Cable, I guess. I mean Avenger's Quicksilver was killed off by Whedon, and with the Fox merger, if the X-men come to the MCU, they'll probably use Evan Peters (who I liked more as Quicksilver, but that's partially due to the writers for the two films he was in) so in that case they'll probably recast Cable with someone like Tom Hardy I guess?

Opening Wakanda up itself is breaking THE single most important tradition in the history of the nation.

I mean, sure. But at the same time, the film kinda falls flat since 1) Michael B. Jordan's revenge story was so short (really should be the three Black Panther solo films if they do the same as they did Ironman, Thor, Captain America) and 2) during that time-frame, they never explain WHY Wakanda doesn't help the poorer blacks/downtrodden beyond "ISOLATIONISM!" I mean they bring it up in the film repeatedly and Bosman/BP and the other Wakandans don't really give a reason beyond "we don't want our tech to fall into the wrong hands." And then they open up their borders and it's like "ok, congrats guys. You aren't isolated anymore but opening up yourself to someone stealing your shit like this white dude did when you helped him and forced your father to close the borders even tighter.  :doge "

So, yeah. I don't think it's the "cultural movement" that GAF's BCT and other black-focused boards think it was. Not a bad film, and the African costumes and shit was nice. But on the heels of Thor: Ragnarok? Very, very, very weak.

I don't think they'll be using any of the current X-Men actors in the MCU. Nor should they, because they're all fucking trash besides Fassbender/McAvoy/Picard/Jackman

I mean, I don't disagree. But Quicksilver's moments in the two X-men films he's in was way better than Quicksilver's use in Avengers: Age of Ultron (but AoU was a weak film in general. I blame that on executive meddling and timelines which caused Joss to have a breakdown)

I completely forgot the hobbit. What a random out of place character that just decided to go with the flow and do everything right. Did that guy have a backstory from previous movies or are we supposed to believe that he's a random CIA good guy? He was the placeholder outsider that decides to help throughout the movie, no personality whatsoever.

Pffft that's amateur stuff, I had already forgotten about him a few hours after watching Black Panther. It must be torture for good actors to do these jobs, the guy wasn't acting he was just reciting lines. His character was completely blank, no motivation, no personality, no human emotion, he was just there helping.

Yeah these already ready rich and successful actors going out of their way to take these roles because they want to be in these movies are being so tortured. No one is forcing them to be in the movies, and they aren't down on their luck just taking any role they can get. Poor Glenn Close. Poor Rene Russo. Poor Anthony Hopkins. What terrible turns their lives took.

I don't think you understand how money works. Rich people don't stop wanting money because they got rich, hell some of the greediest people are rich assholes. And you do realize that many of these actors are participating in the Marvel trash both for the paycheck and exposure?

That these actors are doing the movies because they want to, not because they have to, and almost all of the better actors with bigger names taking roles in these movies talk about how much fun they have doing them and how cool it is for them/their kids/grandkids. The only guy that has complained is Hugo Weaving, and that was as much about having to put on the prosthetic than anything.

So actors say they are having fun during PR tours and interviews? Shocking stuff, next thing you'll tell me is that they also said they're good movies and we should go watch them. It's not even a secret that actors do blockbuster crap for the paycheck. And maybe they're having fun on set but as far as the acting is concerned I doubt they're having "fun". That hobbit dude just seemed bored throughout the entire movie.

Actors like Glenn Close literally said "this looks cool, I want to do one of these movies" and went to Marvel to get in one. Most of these bigger name actors are doing it for fun and the experience, and probably the royalties for merch and toys and shit.

Or, you know, she actually did it for the exposure and the paycheck and this was the PR explanation. Anyway, the discussion is going nowhere and the creepy psycho is annoying me so I'll leave it at that.

And to think this all started because I said it must be torture to act as a generic Marvel character. I mean I get the overreaction by the resident psychotic scarecrow but Jesus Christ Stro, try to care less.

This thread always seems to get its jimmies rustled over Marvel movies. Which is weird to me. It's like arguing over He-Man or Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles for the most part. I'm not a huge fan of the effect Marvel movies have had on the cinema, but a thread where people just talk about why they liked or didn't like a movie doesn't seem to be the place to fight that battle tooth and nail.
