I miss when horror movies had an adult rating. Although some films really push the boundaries between ratings like Red Sparrow, I feel in horror movies in particular they would probably be better off without the compromise.

There's still plenty of adult/R-rated horror films breh.

IT, Get Out, It Follows, You're Next, The Witch, Green Room, SAW, Autopsy of Jane Doe, Crimson Peak, Don't Breath, It Comes at Night, Cabin in the Woods, Trick R Treat, Krampus, V/H/S, The Sacrament, Let Me In/Let the Right One In, EVIL DEAD, Lords of Salem...

I could go on but those are just off the top of my head (with some light research to confirm some of the ratings.)

In fact between Deadpool and IT I think R-rated movies in general are definitely on the upswing.

I think he means like NR stuff that's beyond R. Because yeah there are plenty of R rated horror movies. I'm watching like 2-3 horror flicks a week and out of the last 50 or so horror films I've seen maybe 1 has been PG-13? I feel like they're still all R...

Yeah. Ratings translate a little differently in the UK. An adult rating in the UK is 18 where as the majority of horror movies in the last few years have been a 15 rating. That doesn't always directly translate.

That said, if you look at the original Halloween (1978) it was an X rating, where as Halloween (2018) is an R rating. That doesn't mean the movie can't be good, the quality of the script, and ultimately the execution, will determine that, I just have the feeling with horror movies in particular you're losing something.

1922 was ok. I thought Thomas Jane was great and the first 1/2 was interesting but it didn’t do much in the back half. Novella sounds better for that. Liked it a little more than Gerald’s Game but just a little,

I liked it much less than Gerald's Game, but I hold Gerald's Game in fairly high regard. 1922 bored me to tears.

So two films.
I saw the IT remake, fantastic film, can't wait for the next one. Recall reading the book when I was younger and creeped out by sewer gangbangs, this one still had weird pedo vibes but from people who got dunked on for being pedos, so all good more or less.

Also saw Hereditary. So I heard it was good...
turns out it's about a dysfunctional white family who needed meds or counseling, maybe a divorce. God damn what a dull film.

I think dunking on pedos was in the book too. Well, except for that one unnecessarily lurid scene.

Insomnia

Fantastic. This might be weird to say but as much as I liked Gone Baby Gone this felt like a better version in a way. I also read the plot of the movie it's a remake of, and it seems like Nolan's twists were definitely for the better (though the skeleton is still the same.) Pacino is on-point here (though his "sleepy" acting is a tad lazy, but that might have been the intent.) Great morality tale and high-stakes drama.

(Insomnia is on Amazon Prime Streaming; rewatched it recently, yeah, it's still good.  Everything he's made but Interstellar is good.)

I give more credit to Interstellar than TDK Rises. :yeshrug But yeah he's got a great filmography.

As for Interstellar, Nolan inherited it from Spielberg IIRC, and even back then it was something of a mess.

Dunkirk was a revelation in theaters and restored my faith in him after it slightly faltered with TDKR and Interstellar back-to-back. I'm really looking forward to his next film -- WW2 movies usually aren't my thing, so I'm excited to see what's next.

Feel like watching this tonight.

I've been curious about that series ever since the music was used in Kill Bill. 仁義なき戦い has a weird naming conversion, so that's just showing as "Another Battle" for me on my Netflix queue.

They're great Yakuza movies, they're gritty and violent and not at all glamorous. I first got into them around the time Battle Royale was getting popular in the US (Kinji Fukasaku directed it also). There's 5 main movies, and then three spin-offs (New Battles). I've never seen the spinoffs, but the main ones are rad.

Saw Christopher Robin - Was cute and nostalgic. Kinda standard tale, but using Winnie the Pooh and cast as the way an old bitter man remembers the kid in him works pretty well. Had some really nice looking shots, like the main long where Robin and Pooh and sit. Took me a bit to get used to how they made Pooh and cast look in realistic CG, but got used to it and the voices are great. As my every 10 years, Winnie the Pooh nostalgia trip, this movie works. I hope Pooh makes it into KH3!

Why does it have to be Christopher Robin though? (movie is way too new for KH3 anyhow, worlds were locked down years ago).
100 Acre Woods has been in like half the KH games with Pooh and cast interacting with Sora. That's all I want again in KH3.

Maybe in KH4 for Christopher Robin :)

Maaaaan. Upgrade was a super cool flick. Best sci-fi action film since District 9. Liked pretty much everything about it and thought the concept was really original and clever. Thought the ending twist was pretty predictable, but

Didn't predict that Stem was behind it all. Thought it was just the scientist kid which seemed obvious that he hired them to paralyze him to do the experiment.

Definitely is the move that puts Leigh Whannel on the spot. Who would've known that the co-writer of Insidious (and writer of the super terrible Insidious 4) and director of Insidious 3 had this in him. Good for him!

So I watched 2001: A Space Odyssey yesterday at an IMAX. What an experience. Every single aspect of the film is heightened. I was particularly struck by the scenes involving thr vital stats of the cryosleeping crew on thr Jupiter mission while HAL murders them. The piercing sound to the toweringly large flashing text.

I also love the scene of Dave speaking to HAL while he has his dead crew member out in space. The way Kubrick frames the main ship against the smaller vessel. Its as if in that moment you're truly seeing the physical manifiststion of what HAL really is in that cold, lifeless, and massive ship.

It's OK. The name, music and atmosphere elevate it, but at its core it's a fairly basic and somewhat boring movie. The best part is the last 20 mins easily.

Saw Rifftrax Live showing of Krull earlier today. I'll be honest, it's not a particularly good movie. I know that's surprising to some people. But it was fun seeing Liam Neeson and Robbie Coltrane slumming it up in a C-grade 80's scifi/fantasy flick that starred no one else of note.

Ice Pirates [from the same screenwriter] was a much better movie. Or at least a lot more fun.

Haha, I just saw a trailer before Blackkklamsman for the Krull thing. I thought to myself, “You could have young, sexy Orson Welles walk out on stage, jizz on a bucket of popcorn, and hand it to me before the movie and it still wouldn’t be worth it to pay money to see Krull.”

That movie is among the worst. I think it might also be unriffable. It’s just joyless in all regards.

Eh...I didn't hate it. But I've got a really high tolerance for dumb 80's scifi/fantasy, so that probably helps a little. On the other hand, it's really dull. It just plods from one scene to the next aimlessly, and the action is really bad. There's barely any life to the acting, outside of a few lines from Liam Neeson and Robbie Coltrane. And for some reason they thought it needed to be 2 hours long!

Actually, what it really reminded me of was a much worse, really dull version of The Neverending Story.

Nerds in the 80's were so hard up for a fantasy movie that they talked themselves into liking A LOT of shitty movies (Krull being one of them). The bar was so low that these impressions lived on.

Conan the Destroyer gets shit on a lot but despite its flaws (it's lazy, the violence is sanitized, some of the effects are garbo, it's very weak for a Fleischer direction, etc...) I think it's mildly enjoyable.
