First Man was greaaaat. Even though I'm getting kinda tired of all these talented writer/directors (Saulnier, Chazelle, Yorgos Lanthimos) just adapting books instead of writing original interesting scripts suddenly, First Man seems like it was a good book and plays to Chazelle's strengths which is really good character drama. Movie feels like the logical big budget next step from Whiplash more than La La Land. I really liked how the movie isn't so much about the mission, like how most astronaut movies are, but it's about a broken damaged man. Gosling does a good job, though I'm sure he'll get the same criticism he got in Drive. Acting as a walled up unemotional person is acting!
Anyhow, the soundtrack was also stellar. Sadly no jazz drums, but maybe that's because Chazelle didn't write the script.
I could see Chazelle getting another oscar nom for directing for First Man. There's a scene about 2/3rds in that uses their F-bomb drop they get in a PG-13 flick that is daaamn emotional powerhouse acting. That's totally gonna be the clip that plays during oscars for acting/directing.
Oh and the directing of all the space stuff was pretty cool and stylish. Glad I caught this in the theater before it's gone.
