Anyone see Overlord yet? Every time I try to get someone to go with me, I tell them the premise and their eyes glaze over in boredom.

I did. It was ok. Solid, but nothing special. Felt like one of those middle tier comic book movies like Wonder Woman or Captain America 1 but worse. It’s totally fine & serviceable and I don’t regret my time but it brings nothing special and there is no Clovefield connection as was rumored ;_;

I fucking loved The Outlaw King. It's tragic, brutal, and romantic. Its everything I want from a film featuring this era that hollywood never gets right. It has big faults for sure, but it all seems purely due to budget constraints. The score is off the charts good.

I'll have to check this out. I thought the reviews weren't so hot on this and was gonna pass even though I like Pine and the setting.

Its a bit of a hodge podge of moments versus a well crafted thread. It's covering a lot in the span of two hours. For me the reasons to watch it are the acting sense of drama and score.

First Man was greaaaat. Even though I'm getting kinda tired of all these talented writer/directors (Saulnier, Chazelle, Yorgos Lanthimos) just adapting books instead of writing original interesting scripts suddenly, First Man seems like it was a good book and plays to Chazelle's strengths which is really good character drama. Movie feels like the logical big budget next step from Whiplash more than La La Land. I really liked how the movie isn't so much about the mission, like how most astronaut movies are, but it's about a broken damaged man. Gosling does a good job, though I'm sure he'll get the same criticism he got in Drive. Acting as a walled up unemotional person is acting!

Anyhow, the soundtrack was also stellar. Sadly no jazz drums, but maybe that's because Chazelle didn't write the script.

I could see Chazelle getting another oscar nom for directing for First Man. There's a scene about 2/3rds in that uses their F-bomb drop they get in a PG-13 flick that is daaamn emotional powerhouse acting. That's totally gonna be the clip that plays during oscars for acting/directing.

Oh and the directing of all the space stuff was pretty cool and stylish. Glad I caught this in the theater before it's gone.

I don't care if this sucks (it won't bless up) I'm just happy to see Ronon Dax win.

you know...this could work, the sea stuff still all looks crappy, but i liked the rooftops fun

and Wonder Woman 84 will work obv

the reshuffled schedule moving Birds of Prey up and pushing Flashpoint back while having it around as an opportunity to subtly alter out Whedon's and Warner's crimes against Snyder's Perfect Vision and also use it to reboot things like whatever Gunn does for the Suicide Squad everyone realized they wanted after it was done shooting...plus that younger Batman and whatever else (like silently moving Cyborg and Green Lantern into non-existence along with Geoff Johns)

plus they have Shazam/Black Adam coming in from the side

watch them accidentally turn the DCEU around while not intending on it...they just need to realize that Justice League probably needs to be standalone action/quips instead of part two of a four part three hour long New Gods lore packed epic

spoiler (click to show/hide)
Snyder's biggest mistake was not putting the Anti-Life Equation into BvS so that all became one with Darkseid and the people would await his coming and the masterpiece :pitbull

How did Deadpoo 2 end up doing? Thought it was fine, better than than the first. But the Deadpoo fervor seems to have quieted down.

Almost exactly the same as the first one, which is amazing for an R-rated comedy sequel. Could see the PG-13 cut putting them over DP1. X-Force with the MCU (and you just know they’re just going to squeeze them in) will make bank.

Mission Impossible Fallout:

Why did this get so many positive reviews?  It felt old and tired...like how Tom Cruise looks at this point.  This was the same old shit again and it's just boring now.  It also had several characters from Mission Impossible Rogue Nation who I didn't remember because that movie also was kind of a snoozer to me.  There's a point in this movie where it's like PLOT TWIST DOUBLE AGENT NO PLOT TWIST TRIPLE AGENT NO PLOT TWIST DOUBLE AGENT and it's just fucking ridiculous, even for this movie series.  Ghost Protocol was much, much better than the last two films.

I think the biggest problem is it looks like a movie I've already seen before.

The shot selection, action and character blocking all looks like a dozen other action movies.

But in a world where Venom and Jurrasic Park 5 make over half a billion dollars, my opinion means nothing.

burning is a meticulously crafted film dealing with a complicated yet understated relationship between a trio and the social classes that divide them. it's cryptic in nature, with each scene meriting a discussion of sorts leaving viewers to decipher the meaning behind the characters and their interactions. and then there is the cinematography, where the aesthetics favor the grotesque and ill-favored over the varnish of overly-composed perfectly scouted shots that seem to be in vogue these days. i haven't been this moved or inspired by a film since certain women.

Watched that Outlaw King film on Netflix.

It was pretty good. Not many of these type of films are being made post Mel Gibson so it was nice to see another nicely produced medieval movie.
With that said, you could tell it was heavily inspired by Game of Thrones. It even shared some actors. But then again, the original books of GoT were inspired by events such as these so.

In any case. The story is compelling, the scenery convincing, the battles brutal and the acting is well done. So overall I was quite impressed by the entire package.
Also if Florence Pugh keeps this up she's going to be the next big star in movies. She's really great.

Invasion of the Body Snatchers (1956)

I've watched this several times now and like it more each time. Even as a cheap b-movie I think it's the best version of the story. The setting and the black and white photography go really well with it. One thing bothers me every time though:

spoiler (click to show/hide)
At the end Becky becomes a pod person after falling asleep in the mine. But we haven't seen any pods in the mine. Some possible explanations:

1. It's a plot hole, perhaps related to last minute changes forced on the director to make the ending less dark.

2. The search party noticed them but instead of catching them left pods. That way they might think they were safe and fall asleep, while if they were captured they might do anything up to suicide to avoid falling asleep.

3. Becky was already a pod person before reaching the mine.

4. Becky was never a pod person, she just gave up and lost her emotions.
[close]

Dirty Harry

Mostly didn't like it. It feels incredibly long because there are about a dozen false endings and the characters aren't interesting or clever enough to justify having more than one or two endings. And the way his superiors act is totally unbelievable. The iconic line is great, but they even ruin that a little by repeating it later.

Charley Varrick

Now this is more like it. 70s crime at its best, along with Chinatown and The Friends of Eddie Coyle. The whole cast is great but Joe Don Baker stands out for being so wonderfully hateable.

Burning - Ok, so there's a good movie in there but BY GOD the first 90 mins could've been trimmed to 30 mins. It's a good, but kinda been done many times before, 2.5 hour movie that is pretty boring until the 2nd half. I haven't read the short story (planning to), but maybe that's what happens when you take a short story and make it 2.5 hours.

I also wasn't too impressed by the cinematography or directing or acting. It was fine, but nothing jumped out as great to me. Like it felt like a pretty typical thriller just at an excruciatingly slow pace. Like a movie David Fincher would've made better.

That all sounds awful negative, but I still liked it, but man I wish I didn't have to sit through that first hour. It was probably one of the most boring slow hours of a movie I've ever seen. Also the lead character sucks and reminds me of Shinji from Evangelion.

Now I'm gonna go read the Murakami short story it's based off.

Ok, I read the Murakami story Barn Burning which is also a play on the Faulkner short story Barn Burning (read that too). It’s interesting how Burning from Faulkner’s. Was also cool how the movie pulled a lot of scenes/dialogue 1:1 from the Murakami story.

That being said, yeah I really enjoyed the Murakami story, but like a lot of the stuff I felt meh about in Burning the movie were original subplots (the well stuff & his mom) & original last 1/3rd which just felt weaker. This adaptation seriously did not need to be 2.5 hours. You can probably cut a 90 min edit of Burning and not lose almost anything. Because the plot is short.

And yeah, coming from the short story, I don’t like the movie ending. Just felt too Hollywood to me and too unbelievable, plus the main character in the short story is not a total little Shinji shit (good ole’ creepy masterbating) and I would’ve liked it with a less creepy weirdo lead if they were going the direction they did with the finale.

Been thinking about Burning more and I definitely like some of the little things they added to the story which feel in line with the short story like

spoiler (click to show/hide)
The bit about Ben's character never having cried (evidence he's a psychopath), the bit where he does the magic trick and says he always like a game (which makes sense with the cat & mouse he does in the last 1/3rd), the bits where he's yawning at the girls, the part where he's standing over the lake, the bit about his cooking is like an offering to himself as a god, the bit about metaphor (which plays into the greenhouse burning)
[close]

So overall I liked what they added to the movie (except the ending and main character), but the first 90 mins is still too slow haha
