I was curious about Colossal for a while and wasn't disappointed : it's a pretty neat movie. I guess it's as fresh as a take on a kaiju eiga as it can get though I'd imagine one could feel it a bit formulaic in how it boils down this to an accessory to an indie drama (the real monster is... etc). I wouldn't want to give the wrong impression : don't watch this for the kaijus, it's fairly minimal but it's done well enough and in a respectful manner. I'm just a bit let down by the very end, it basically boils down to something very simple, expeditious and bordering on morally problematic or simplistic I guess...

...that defeats the whole framing. I don't know how they could have wrapped it otherwise though.

Anne Hathaway is very charming and cute, Jason Sudeikis pulls off a good performance too.

I'd rather have a standalone Clayface movie next.

Amidst this decade of random Batman spinoffs and spinoffs of spinoffs... how about an actual Batman movie first?  :birb

Saw the Harley Quinn trailer and wow this looks really bad and a return to ugly and usual fare. Maybe I'm wrong but I think the Joker honeymoon is going to be short lived.

Saw The Big Short. Not a fan of the visual and directing flourishes of this (those celebrity cameos to explain bad securities... Meh.) but I guess it's sort of an unimpeachable film given the subject matter, the heart is in the right place.

Already a TV show.  They should do The Pennyworths, set when Alfred is just a child during WW2 and his father is in the war ministry.  The whole movie is secretly another Churchill biopic.   Also, Harley is in it.

And there’s a three minute scene of Alfred’s dad pressing Thomas Wayne’s pants while Rock & Roll Part 2 plays.

Can't remember if I mentioned this elsewhere, but the best compliment I can give Joker is that it would be a better film if it wasn't saddled with the "comic book movie" baggage. It's a great film that happens to be set in a comic book world.

I'm going to say that Joker probably doesn't glorify or evoke sympathy for Joker's actions and just don't understand the concept of villain protagonists doesn't mean endorsement of their behavior.

Well, I think part of the reason might be that the director has spoke out against 'woke culture'. Basically said woke culture is killing comedy. And so now you have 'critics' reading a whole bunch of shit into the movie.

So that article for instance:

Quote
"Joker," at its core, is the story of the "forgotten man," the metaphoric displaced and disenfranchised white man whose goodwill has been abused and whose status has been reduced. A man who has been crushed underfoot by the elite, dragged down by equality-demanding feminists and climbed over by upstart nonwhite and immigrant masses.

I've not seen the movie, but based on what I know, none of this is explicit, right? It is probably imagined by the critic. In other words, this is what is actually going on, but really it means this. I mean everyone has an opinion about what a movie really means. and often you find directors tend to leave it unexplained so that people can find their own interpretation of what it means. It's just that it's a thing now for some critics to interpret a movie through the lens of identity politics. And often come to wild conclusions.

Spotlight : Subscribe to your local failing press outlets ! is I guess the duller, classier docudrama The Big Short wasn't, but global pedophilic coverups probably wouldn't mesh well with any other tone (Though I haven't seen the latest Ozon film which tackles this from a different angle). It's well made, it's not too long and there's enough self awareness or self criticism to avoid preachiness. The story is revolting enough to elicit emotional reactions but it does lack something to elevate to being more impactful purely as a movie, perhaps ?

The most hilarious party of all this kneejerk "woke" criticism is that the actual bad guy of the film is Thomas Wayne. He's the one blatantly portrayed as the Trump figure. He's the one who represents "The Man". Joker actually has more in common with the woke crowd; the disadvantaged, the downtrodden.

Race plays absolutely no part in the story, neither does feminism. Any reviewer saying otherwise has clearly not watched the whole film and most likely is basing their review on the trailers.

I liked Margin Call quite a bit, yeah. I think it encapsulates things in a more elegant manner.

Rewatched Casino. I only was curious for the intro but the film passed by as a breeze. I still think the final act is still maybe too similar to Goodfellas but the whole is still enjoyable. The wardrobe and set work is bonkers, the first 40mn are amazing and the soundtrack licencing must have cost an arm. Cool Bass intro too.

Don't sell Pattinson short just because Twilight sucks. Cronenberg's Cosmopolis shows some actual darkness resting there in him, and Rover really shows his range.

El Camino was kind of a pointless endeavor.  :-\
Wasn't particularly atrocious or anything, just adds nothing to the world of the show nor the character of Jesse, and it's just 2 hours of things that are either inconsequential, or that you could've just assumed on your own.

Reminded me a bit of the Deadwood movie in that sense, but that one at least embraced its time jump, which would've helped this movie greatly.

Saw The Joker with the wife last night. Don't get the complaints from the REEE type people, it's a villain movie it's SUPPOSED to make you uncomfortable. Also I heard a lot of critics saying nothing exciting happens. That's also true, but it's not a marvel film. I really liked it. I think Joaquin really holds his own against Ledger's joker maybe even surpasses him in some spots and gives a really great performance.  I might actually go see it again as all the (older) kids really want to.

EDIT: also that CNN article and articles like it, sorta make the Joker's whole point, better than the movie could actually.

Law and Order: SVU - Seasons 1-20
https://www.mediaversityreviews.com/tv-reviews/2019/9/28/law-and-order-special-victims-unit-seasons-1-20

In preparing to write this review, I did something absurd: I rewatched every episode—458 of them—in order over the course of two months. I filled a journal with notes as I watched, full of things that won’t fit into this review.

I kept track of how often one of the detectives threatened a suspect with prison rape (way too often) and whenever the death penalty came up (they finally stopped mentioning it after New York State officially prohibited it in 2007.) I made notes on episodes’ treatment of mental health (some good, some infuriating) and whenever a rape allegation that turned out to be false entered the narrative (as in real life, it’s hard to calculate—but it’s rare.) At one point, and after several glasses of wine, I convinced myself that I had uncovered a vast conspiracy involving a writer that didn’t exist and a nefarious corporate agenda. (I hadn’t. Probably.) Mostly, I reaffirmed what I already knew: Watching SVU is emotionally exhausting, but it has to be.

Twin Peaks: Fire Walk With Me - I can sort of see why it'd be boo'd at Cannes. It feels like it's bordering on parody of the series at some points.

I feel bad for Sheryl Lee, given 80% of the film she's crying or having to act high/drunk (for a "good reason" in the sense that her dad is fucking raping her/abusing her damn near nightly and that she's a prostitute for drugs to try to forget this) while there's certain things like Donna's recast (due to scheduling issues with Lara Flynn Boyle) and then having sex with these two johns that Laura was picking up that isn't hinted at in the TV series.

Just feels like they put Laura into a "really bad situation" to make her death/abuse by Leland land more.

I saw The King of Comedy for the first time yesterday, a movie said to be a big influence on Joker (which I haven't seen yet).

It's ok. Obviously an early 80's flick. More "cinema" than blockbuster material. It's about people obsessed with celebrities, desperate for fame themselves. De Niro plays one such character, an annoying little twerp, never takes no for an answer, sticks to people like flies to shit, delusional, lies through his teeth and will do anything to get what he wants. As the "hero" in the story, he...

I'm surprised TKoC cost 19 million to make though (36 years ago), that's more than Tron, Raiders of the Lost Ark, E.T., Wrath of Khan or Empire Strikes Back's budget. TKoC has like 7 characters, a few exterior shots of NY, no special effects whatsoever and a bunch of studio scenes. Was Jerry Lewis demanding a 10 million paycheck? :)

After watching David Lynch's 'Art Life’ it puts a lot of his darkness into context. Which is to say, Philadelphia apparently really fucked him up. His childhood seemed saccharine with moments of darkness but a lot of the violent inspirations seem to come from Philly experienced as a young adult. Societal indifference, mental illness,  urban decay. Goes to show when inspiration strikes the effects can be profound.

In El Otro Cristobal there's a Latin America military dictatorship, there's a pharaonic canal project backed by financial interests and the USA, there's social unrest brewing but there's also Olofi sitting in his divine throne. All the student strikes are disrupting his baseball viewing and bored he decides to oblige when a prisoner curses the head of state : the dictator shoots himself. While down below the Cabinet is desperately trying to delay the news and cover up his death to secure the canal project, the late admiral is blocked into a purgatory casino where you play for your salvation using good deed tokens. Frustrated, he start planning a coup against God. The guerilla will have to take the fight to the heavens...

A Franco-Cuban production from 1963 (lead role is held by Jean Bouise, an iconic character actor from the 60-70s) the film was recently salvaged from elements found in France and in the Cuban archives. It's an absurdist, surreal revolutionary tale with some striking imagery and that remains playful all the way through proving that not all Marxist Leninist films have to be somber affairs.

I don't know how wide any distribution will be besides this round of screenings, but maybe there'll be a home video release at some point.

Btw, to the people who saw Ad Astra, did they cut a bit from the movie that was in the trailer?

The bit at 1:13 - 1:16 with the shirtless cowboy hologram, I don't remember that being in the movie
I do not recall that being in the movie. There was no "first 5 minutes of Half-Life 2" type of scene in the theater cut.

Saw The Love Witch. thought it was great. So nice to see a movie like that. Plays like a B movie and yet underneath it all it's far from that. There were moments where I'm like "lol Midsommar ripped this movie off" in jest as I highly doubt it. It's just funny that there are bits and pieces that remind me of it pretty heavily. Some parts were sort of Twin Peaks-ey too. The director should get together with David Lynch and make some glorious monstrosity. I'd be there day 1.

I thought it was pretty good, not great.
It's got a fun tone, and it plays with its themes in a lighthearted way.
Been a couple of years since i watched it though, so i only remember the gist of it.
