I watched Wired, that notoriously bad Belushi biopic starring Vic Mackey from like 1989. It’s only on YouTube. That’s a fantastic what-were-they-thinking? trainwreck. Sounds like the book it’s based on is an abortion as well. I guess Ackroyd and others used their influence to bury the flick because they were against it from the start.

Knives Out was fantastic- great way to wash the taste of shitty Star Wars movies out of my mouth.  When the film was about halfway done, I was wondering how it would proceed any further- felt like it almost was two movies back to back, but didn't feel too long, either, because of how enjoyable everything was.

Made it halfway through Baumbach & Gerwig’s follow up to Frances Ha, Mistress America and it’s crazy going from the fantastically likeable Frances Ha to a movie that’s grating and turns Gerwig’s dialogue delivery from charming to really annoying. The main college girl and her college writing story is fine, but the angle with Gerwig’s character gets lame quick. Maybe my least favorite Baumbach movie so far and it’s so weird since it was only a couple years after Frances Ha with the same staff.  :'(

Studio and producer change, plus the (thankful?) lack of TJ Miller, means this'll probably feel pretty different to DP1 and 2.

Yeah, was really that good!

Going through Baumbach's catalog I think I've seen them all (assuming I finish Mistress America tonight) but was iffy on whether I actually watched When We Were Young since it got not so hot reviews and I felt like I watched it, but couldn't really remember it clearly as if I actually watched it. So I clicked on it on Netflix and discovered I watched half of it and given up! Reminds me of Mistress America  :lol

I'd have to go back and re-watch Squid & The Whale/Margo because I have zero memories of what I thought of them at this point, but Baumbach for me is like Frances Ha >>>>>>>>>>>>>>>> Marriage Story >>>> rest are just ok. Where is the Baumbach that made Frances Ha, I want to see that energy and style again!

I mean I'm fine with that as long as its still Reynold's Deadpool. DP2 had great bits, but overall was kinda just watchable outside the great bits and Brolin's cable. I think a little bit of a shakeup at least gives it the chance to do something different.

The idea of a cutaway gag like in DP2 to Dark Phoenix's cast, but instead it's like... Chris Hemsworth's comedic Thor... There's potential there.

But yeah, even if Once Upon a Deadpool worked, it worked in spite of its rating. Hopefully Di$ney is $mart enough to $ee how much ca$h they'd lose going PG-13.

The other side of the coin is that DP1 and 2 made fun of Fox quite a bit, and comic book movies in general, and even took potshots at the MCU. Will Disney continue to allow that?

Keep in mind Disney censored a joke about Keylo Ren in one of their own movies (Wreck it Ralph 2) because at the time they wanted to build him up as some unimpeachable badass like Vader, even though it was clear to everyone from the outset he's just a whiney fanboy. :lol

Since it's Marvel Studios and thus Feige, I'm sure Reynolds has a ton of leeway, and in fact he probably wouldn't even do it if he was shackled in some way. But I still worry about script notes such as "This skit about Han Solo's son making out with Palpatine's granddaughter is too over the line."

Feige isn't dumb though, Deadpool movies were successful because of the R rating and humor potshots. Pretty sure they'll give them a lot of leeway to make fun of things.

Saw Little Women. Was good, I mainly like Ronan's acting and Gerwig's changes to the novel structure and ending. Everyone else was ok but sorta window dressing and I swear Pugh overacts in everything I've seen her in. Laura Dern is great too. Other than the structure changes, it still feels pretty traditional period piece. I was sorta hoping Gerwig would modernize the dialogue interactions more like a modern indie flick, but I guess that wouldn't work without changing the setting to modern day. I'm not the biggest fan of period dramas so this was sort outta my zone and just saw it for Gerwig's writing/directing, but enjoyed it though didn't love it.

*edit* oh shit, my friend just corrected me that one of the sisters was Emma Watson when I totally thought the actress was Kristen Stewart the whole movie  :lol

Trying to finish Mistress America and holy shit this is one of the most grating movies I’ve ever seen. Every time Gerwig’s character talks I just cringe. It’s actually painful to finish this to completion.

I don’t know why they thought this was a good movie concept.

The movie is about Gerwig’s character who is a total sociopath and whines and talks to everyone but never listens to anything they say or cares about anyone else and this main college girl who is fine at first starts hanging with her and starts becoming more like Gerwig’s character so also a terrible sociopath person...

...and I assume in the end she’ll fall down and realize being a shitty sociopath isn’t a good thing in life and goes back to being a sorta decent person, the end.

*edit* finished it. Got more watchable once things fall apart in the last 20 mins and people have to stop being so shitty. Still did not like this at all outside the awkward jokes here and there.

Cats is really trash, even down to the original components that I would have expected to be... Broadway competent ? There's only one good song in the whole thing, the one Streisand covered. It is just shitty mad libs about cats fused with Imperial London tropes. Otherwise the film has that nightmarish quality of a critical aesthetic meltdown compounded by constant uncanny valley vibes. The narration and pacing as a film is pretty fucked all around, they really didn't know how to tell this story.

I'll just give a brownie point to the lead actress, a ballet dancer in her first film, because it's really a thankless job for her and there's a couple of shots where her grace as a dancer does shine through despite the mountain of crap burdening the image.

The Village People Train Conductorcat number got a laugh out of me though.

It’s true, the average marine in 2019 barely has the testicular fortitude to slap a copy of The Origin of Species out of an ACLU abortion doctor’s hands, much less summon a bald eagle to sing God Bless America.

One of the worst things about Cats : the characters are supposedly scaled down to the size of a cat (or the sets and props scaled up) and it feels incredibly inconsistent and all around weird. It's a distraction right up until the end.

Joker before he was Joker. Great soundtrack and a very tense 90 minutes of film.

Once Upon a Time In Hollywood
Finally released in glorious 4K HDR. Loved it in the summer, loved it now. Something about that movie makes it extremely easy to watch.
You simply turn it on, grab a beer, sit back and enjoy the spectacle of late 60's Hollywood and the incredible performances of Di Caprio and the rest of the cast.
So far my favorite film of 2019 and given the fact that 2019 is pretty much over I'd say this is my definitive movie of the year.

I've seen Wild Goose Lake (the proper international title) by Diao Yi'nan, a crime story : A bike thieves gang head get embroiled in a turf war... Things escalates quickly and soon he is at the center of a manhunt in which he can only rely on the help of a prostitute...

Not too surprisingly for a Chinese movie : great photography & impressive locations of the sprawling urbanism of the new China, fused in a LED and neon nightmare, more tension than action, more contemplation than dialogue and in the background a constant sense of paranoia directed towards an omnipresent police, double crossing thugs &the constant noise of modernization. The film is tight enough to not overstay its welcome despite being often feverish.

No cats based song, sadly.

On my flight back to the States I watched Game Night and Yesterday

Game Night, funny sometimes. Never really have any reason to watch it again.

Yesterday, premise is fine, but the execution is very ehhhh. Like why Ed Sheeran? How come Coca Cola was forgotten too? And there are other things that even within the rules of the movie seem kinda like "huh, and that's the reaction?". It seems a little bit one foot in trying to do the movie right and one foot in being very by the numbers with a flair of MTV Productions. Missed opportunity.

I'm about to go see see the Sandler movie which apparently isn't anything like Jack & Jill. WTF!? Am I right marines? Semper fi!

Both the biggest flaw and strength of OUATIH is that it could've continued for another 6 - 10 hours of just following the antics of Rick Dalton and Cliff Booth.
Arguably the weakest part of the movie is when they return from Italy and the movie goes montage: "At XX PM the following and following happened".
While a song which sounds something like: "We're running out of time" plays in the background. It picks up right at the great finale again.

I guess to like the movie you have to like the Rick Dalton and Cliff Booth characters though.
If you don't care for them there's not much that will keep you hooked.

It's weird to presume that every movie goer would be familar with the events sorrounding Manson and I assume the movie will age worse than Django and IB because of it. Still many standalone scenes were amazing. :trumps
Not really the movie's fault.
You wouldn't complain about Ida needing some historical context to be understood, for example.
That's true for every piece of art, really.

Old art, literature, etc. usually comes with something or someone explaining you the context. Certain historical backdrops for movies don't need further explaining currently - i.e. something like general knowledge of WW2 is basic education. Yet if people didn't follow the marketing of OUATIH and just went to see it, one third of the movie might fly over their head and not because they are too dumb.
