I’m assuming shosta was joking about wanting to see a remake. If he’s not, I’m furiously snapping pencils at him.

Edit: Stuart Gordon also wrote person fave The Dentist, which I’m always pushing because it’s underseen. Which is why I edited this post to mention it. Also has a really fun sequel.

The trifecta of Stuart Gordon, Dennis Paoli, and Brian Yuzna turned out some pretty good work in their day.

Yuzna’s in-name-only Silent Night Deadly Night sequel was pretty fun, too. I just recently watched that.

Growing up I was exposed to horror movies early so I kinda learn to see past shit but The Dentist was always too much for me. Still don't think I've seen it in it's entirety.

Give it a shot! If anything you’ll get a kick out of it for feeling distinctly early-mid 90s. It’s one of those movies that feels kind of like a time capsule even though it doesn’t have a bunch of pop culture callbacks. The look, the production, just all very classic cheap, golden age direct-to-video.

(This does not apply to the sequel, where they must have had more budget or a better crew.)

I see The Last Broadcast is on Amazon Prime. I was wondering if that would ever turn up streaming. The last third sucks, but it’s still a pretty fun watch if you’re a found footage fan. This was the modern found footage film that came out shortly before Blair Witch Project, so it’s interesting in that it’s not at all influenced by it.

That’s actually not bad casting. Did you see Paul on Lodge 49? Maybe not Dr. Hill, but he’s definitely doing the kind of acting that a remake would need.

He plays a Kilgore Trout-esque trashy genre fiction writer and he hams it up really well. He only shows up in season 2, so don’t go in watching just for him (although he was the producer and it was apparently a babby of his).

Uncut Gems was a really uncomfortable movie to watch. It's an intense ride watching a reprehensible arsehole trying to win. Sandler does an amazing job of making you feel sympathetic for Howard while also hating him for being a scumbag.

The scene where he tries to reconcile with his wife was somehow both cathartic and uncomfortable. Seeing him be told exactly what he is but fuck was it hard to watch.

Yeah lifting wasn't the best word, more "homaged it up to legal limits". I liked the music in the film, that track included.

What I didn't like was the ending though. I don't know why, it follows fairly consistently but it's a bit of an elephant in a porcelain shop approach. Also thought the film was too long. The hustling spiral would have been no less vertigo inducing if a couple of steps had been trimmed.

Pretty decent film overall.

Uncut Gems excelled at sustaining an intensity rivaling the most absurd clusterfucks I've ever seen. Upped the ante on what they did with Good Times too, and for my enjoyment at least it was to the detriment of the film itself. It felt like an exercise in keeping the atmosphere taut at all times, but also felt forced and fake. Imo, it's kinda overrated, but I guess it depends on how much you respect the novelty of the direction. The climax was perfect and Sandlers performance was close to his best though (PDL).

That's pretty close to what I thought. Loved most of visual direction but yeah there's something a bit artificial to it. It's just a story and life can be dumb like that but the priming incident that provokes the whole cascade is a bit hard to swallow.

I'm a huge Geinoh Yamashirogumi fanboy, but they didn't invent gamelan and percussions. Besides, their music used elements of Japanese and Asian folk music prior to Akira:

It's probably an inspiration and nothing more, but of course the Internet loves to cry plagiarism at the first whiff.

The Great Wall : For this type of modern CGI-barf-fest blockbuster, I thought it was actually pretty decent. As always with those Yimou epics it's both gaudy and grandiose but the condensed runtime is a godsend at keeping this a pleasant fabtasy romp. There's enough cool visuals and decent ideas in the action to avoid just being derivative of The Two Towers. Matt Damon's character is paper thin and there's a weird B-plot that wanders a bit. It's no Red Cliff but I'd rather watch that over a Marvel movie.

Speaking of Indian movies. What's the deal with 2.0? It was either the priciest movie from Bollywood or made the most money. Can't remember which. I watched with a few friends cause it looked like "so bad it's good movie". And well it was for the most part just that. I mean way worse than some of the early Transformer movies if I'm gonna compare it to some nonesense spectical. But you mean to tell me that the domestic audiences looked at each other after the credits and nodded to each other "hell yes"? That's some rose tinted hogwash. I understand that the main actor is beloved but so what. I mean the lead actress is deliberately chosen purely for her sex appeal, which sure it's not like I was repulsed given that I took the movie as schlocky B-tier popcorn munching entertainment. I guess that's another reason why I compare it to Transformers. Anyways, 2.0 is artistically completely banal if we are sincere here. India you can do much better.

Edit: not saying this to be contrarian or edgy. Like if I showed it to my mom she would think I'm being an ass to her for making her watch it.

Joker - Eh, was ok. Couldn't buy the transition to mastermind villain. The character transitions in general felt kinda forced moments to string the plot along towards the end goal. Good acting and entertaining, but otherwise don't get why this stuck out or did so well financially. I honestly would find a movie with this Joker fighting a Batman to be a more interesting concept just because I don't see how this Joker would ever be a mastermind supervillian able to fight batman from what was shown in this one, so it'd be interesting to see how they'd try to pull it off.

The Irishman - Eh was ok. Feels like a lot of retreading Goodfellas/Casino. Didn't feel like it brought anything really new or had a reason to be as long as it was. A lot of the story seems kinda meandering until Hoffa comes into the picture and it essentially becomes a Hoffa movie. Some of it's pretty weirdly unstylishly directed for Scorsese, like the signs on how random characters at a table would die years later. It's fine and the acting was pretty good from the key three, but probably one of my least favorite Scorsese films as a generally big Scorsese fan.
