The Wrestler

Rocky I and VI basically do everything his movie does, but better

Joking. Great movie with a pretty amazing performance by Rourke. Now that I've finally seen both performances I can agree he was robbed by the oscars, but I won't blame teh gayz. I have to say the initial impact was minimal for me, but since I finished it a few hours ago I find myself constantly thinking about it. It's a film of regrets and glory days long gone, the camera constantly behind Rourke like a ghost.

And god lord, Marisa Tomei is fucking hot. I wish I lived near a strip joint where no one found her attractive but me  :lol

Does Marisa get nekkid in it? If so: one more reason for HD.

Speaking of which, my new PS3-shaped DVD player received its first Bluray: The Departed. I'd heard it was tense, but I was surprised at how much it actually contained. Very good film, long but never felt like it was dragging. Damon's character was sublime; what a cur. And diCaprio can act, haters be damned.

I liked D9 back when it was called Alien Nation.

I liked D9 actually. Although, it really got away from its premise in the second half and became too much of an action movie.

that's a pretty stupid thing to say considering the movie had 2 action scenes (=~ 15 mins of screentime).

The problem was that the director overdid the action scenes with gratuitous slo-mo and having blood completely splatter the camera a half a dozen times.  The writing itself was absolutely consistent, it's just the director wargasmed a bit.  only real problem I have with the movie.

Two long, extended action scenes. And a lot of time before that was just Wikus running from one place to another.

I liked it more when it was a snarky, satirical documentary.

That's true but I'm just trying to say that it's good to separate the sins of the director from the writer (although they are the same person in this case).

That in this case, the violence fits in the story but the way it was portrayed doesn't fit the style of the rest of the movie (as you mentioned).  It's probably not accurate to say it just switched into an action movie.

The second half wasn't as good as the first half because it got away from focusing on how the aliens are trying [and, in many cases, failing] to fit into human society and the way they are treated by the humans. Satisfied now?

Mad Detective

I would just want to preface this by stating how fucking awesome it was of Netflix to send this to me, as they sent me a region free, Hong Kong import Blu-Ray of a movie that came out on video nearly two years ago and was just now this week stocked by Netflix.  Man, that's appreciated.

Anyways, the movie itself was just about worth the wait.  Its a highly unusual mystery/cop drama spearheaded by a fantastic performance by Lau Ching Wan as the titular character, a brilliant but barely functioning batshit loco detective.  He's able to see into a person's hidden pysches and decipeher whatever it is they're hiding, or can he?  As so much of the film takes place within his own fractured perspective, a lot of the fun from this film comes from puzzling out from what and why a crying little boy might be standing in for a tough cop.  As the main character relies more on emotional empathy then facts when deducting his case, so too must the viewer when it comes to figuring exactly how a person's conflicting inner emotions would play out if the whole world could see them at war.

Overall, its a clever film with a great hook that doesn't quite fully deliver on its premise, but is a lot of head-scratching fun anyway.

In The Loop

Saw this today, it premiered here just recently even though it's been out in the UK since april. Supposedly based on a TV series called "In The Thick Of It" which I seem to have missed completely, this is kind of a fly-on-the-wall style chatty comedy about how a political press office has to deal with an MP with a penchant for vague, clumsy statements. Kind of a corny plot about the intel shenanigans leading up to a significant conflict in the middle east but good lulz and a healthy smattering of scottish profanity as well. Worth watching if you're into british comedies, but maybe all those EB:ers already left?

North by Northwest

The pacing in this was great.  At 90 mins it I felt like I had just started watching it.  Some great lines and some EPIC action sequences including the ending bit.  Two things I didn't like about it:  1) The logic on the plane sequence was lol; why do something that elaborate instead of just have a dude with a gun & 2) The ending/conclusion being deus ex machina and then over in 5 seconds sudden (though I love the line right at end, "so you guys are using live rounds now?")

Otherwise really liked it.  There was some great framing and direction as well.  The scene near the end in the forest with the two leads on opposite sides = I'd like a poster of that plz.

Then I watched the 4th part of the Monty Python doc....4th ep is on the making of the holy grail and it was AWESOME.  :bow Gilliam :bow2

I recently started a netflix account and am really aware on just how much I've missed out on.  I thought watching the season 1 dvds of Arrested Development and The Office was bad.  Those came out in 05-06.  I'm adding movies I always intended to see from freaking 01.  :-\

Watched Ocean's Eleven yesterday because I realise I have a mancrush on Clooney.  These kind of movies are entertaining as long as you don't stop to think about how everyone is a freaking mind reader and know exactly how another character is going to respond.  What if Benedict flat out refused to house the briefcase?  How did they build a replica of a fault based on computer schematics that would be uncanny enough to fool security?  But whatever, enjoyed the tense moments when the plan seemed like it was going to shit.

Brokeback Mountain

Pretty good movie, but it is quite depressing.

Only criticism is I would have liked to see them form a bit more of an emotional bond at the start rather than just a buttsecks bond (not that that didn't give me a woody).

And I have trouble buying Anne Hathaway in her horseriding role but goddam she has some awesome knockers.

I watched Josie and the Pussycats from a stack of DVDs that a friend was going to just throw away. Better than I expected in a Spice Girls Movie kind of way. And any anime fans who go for the BESM look should check Rachel Leigh Cook in it. She looks like a spiky anime-haired babe come to life.

http://moviesblog.mtv.com/2009/11/12/exclusive-independence-day-sequel-to-be-two-movies-possibly-called-id4-ever/

Quote
"What we want to do in the next – it's actually two movies – we want to do a bigger arc," he explained. "'Independence Day' was always like the king who leads his troops into battle against an evil force, and that stays like that."

So the plan is not just one sequel but two. And Emmerich has got a nifty title in mind: "'ID4-ever,' Part I and II maybe?" he suggested.

Mind you, there's not yet a script – "There's an idea," he said – but he did say that when they move forward Will Smith will most certainly be involved. "The idea is just to continue the story and actually I don't know how many years ago this was—twelve, thirteen, fourteen years ago—and just continue where it ended."

Blade runner and Slumdog Millionaire.
Blade runner had an amazing portrayal of the future, although I think some of the dialouge was trite and the replicants practically came to him for extermination.  Its kind of funny looking at some of the anime I used to watch and how much seems like an homage to this movie.

Slumdog was mediocre.  Just a really corny movie and I never felt anything for the characters.

All scifi anime from the early-80's through the mid-90's was heavily inspired by one of three scifi movies: Star Wars, Blade Runner, or Roar Warrior.

Election

Gosh dang, whatta movie.  Its a Hong Kong gangster movie about the disputed election of the next head of an ancient and sprawling crime syndicate.  As much as the members of the group continuously pledge their allegiance and service to the society, anybody who actually does act honorably usually ends up with the most knives in their back (sometimes literally).  Its a movie about evil, badass gangsters screwing each other over, sometimes with political gamesmanship, sometimes with whatever blunt object happens to be lying around.  Its a great movie that works to demythologize the whole gangster lifestyle by taking an almost anthropological look at how a bunch of petty, amoral men do their 'business'.

Shawshank Redemption

Indeed an awesome film, everything comes together like a well-oiled machine. The redemption part didn't blow me away and make me think "OMG best movie ever" like it seems to for some people, but I still really enjoyed the end from the redemption bit onwards.  It even made me well up a bit. :-[

It's been speculated that Harrison Ford did the voiceover in such a deadpan voice that he was hoping they'd not use it. I saw the original "Director's Cut" where they didn't have the voiceover at its re-release at that art theater in Santa Monica (Was that the Rialto? Right there just off the 405...), and it was amazing. The movie works a lot better without it; it starts with the interview with Leon, the interviewer getting shot, and then Deckard gets "arrested," all with no explanation... unsettling and very immediately engrossing.

Keeping with my crappy movie watching started with Josie and the Pussycats, I checked out the Wayans' Bros. effort on White Chicks. It's dumb on dumb, fart jokes, classist white society jokes, dick jokes, fart jokes (yes, a lot of fart jokes), but still fun for all that. I only bring it up because there are a couple of Dexter fans here who like his GF, Rita, and that actress appears in this, wearing a slinky dress and does a couple of flashy moves during a dance off. She has nice abs.

Dex's sister is also in it, but doesn't even get as sexy as she does in Dexter.
