The more I think about it, the more I come to realize that the scene with Young Kirk was tailor made to be the lead-in scene for the theatrical trailer and not much else. In the context of the movie, it's just so horribly bad. Slow-mo jump out of a sliding car that's falling over the side of a cliff? UGH.

Got UP on BR the other day; have now seen it about 4 times. The kid loves it, I love it. It pushes all the obvious emotional buttons, but with a surprising degree of subtlety (even as a Pixar fan).

We've also been mainlining all the old Disney stuff I got recently - Snow White, Sleeping Beauty, Pinocchio. It all holds up REALLY well on Blu-Ray. Beautiful pictures and Tchaikovsky doesn't go out of style.

(on the other hand if i don't see some ultraviolence soon i may go out of my tiny mind)

Finally got around to watching Terminator Salvation on Blu-ray.

I thought there were a lot of neat action set pieces, and I got to give McG props for using real sets in conjunction with the masturbatory CG stuff. Ultimately, the film felt pretty pointless and I thought the ending kind of sucked. Still better than Star Trek.

EDIT: And unlike Star Trek, there's a really good story in there. This film has just been whittled down to lots of action and a lot of nothing. It's a shame that it's not better than it is.

Yeah, it's pretty sweet. It also has the Finding Nemo quality of not becoming terribly annoying as background noise. Compared to stuff like Shrek or Madagascar which become unbearable after the 4th repeat viewing.

Yeah, I felt the same way. The first half, maybe two-thirds, was pretty good, if a bit disjointed.

spoiler (click to show/hide)
The initial assault on the Terminator base and the aftermath, the highway chase, and the fight with the Teminator in the ruined city were all really cool actions scenes.
[close]

But all those scenes were from the first half. The end just fell apart, and had some stuff that didn't make too much sense. Could have been better, but was still watchable.

The end fight was kind of cool, but came across as too much of a wink to the audience, like "Remember the ending from T2? Well, check this out, guys!".

It also goes one or two completely unbelievable bits of movie science too far. As a general rule, I'm pretty liberal on that stuff ("It's just a movie!") and I let it slide; think the whole water emitter thing in Batman Begins.

But Terminator Salvation really reaches, especially near the end, and it just comes off as contrived.

The movie is supposed to be about what makes a human well, uh, human (I know this, because as with all films with lazy writing, this theme is asked in the form of a question within the actual film itself) and that could've been a really, really cool movie. Especially since I thought Worthington was really good in the role.

Instead, it's disjointed and lazy, and lacks the ability to ask tough questions.

Bale's performance was pretty one-dimensional and John Connor felt like a throwaway character. If I'm more concerned about the Terminator-of-the-Week over the main protagonist, you've got problems.

Both my friend and I thought it would have been much better, and ballsy...

spoiler (click to show/hide)
...if Bale died and Worthington took over the reigns. Maybe because his performance was superior. "Not the future my mother told me about" -- that should have foreshadowed him dying. I mean, that's what they were trying to do, I think. And maybe they thought they were throwing a curveball at the end? But really, who would think John Connor/Christian Bale would REALLY get killed off? Plus, he should have been killed by fake Arnold anyway. That whole scene was dumb.
[close]

I'm a pretty big Terminator fan, and even enjoyed T3, so I was a bit disappointed as well that the movie felt so forgettable.

I'm in the same boat. And I do believe that was the original plan, actually. I'm too lazy to dig up old news stories and posts, but I do believe that it was planned that:

spoiler (click to show/hide)
Connor would die and be replaced by a Terminator.

Easily would have been better.

That said, it blows my mind that some critics called it the worst big budget summer blockbuster they had ever seen. It wasn't even the worst big budget summer blockbuster in the same summer!

I just watched this hilariously bad Shaw Bros. movie called The Battle Wizard. The first two minutes of the movie were awesome, they went something like this:

*man and woman having sexy time*
Woman: "Uguuu..."
Man: "What's wrong, are you sick, are you pregnant?"
Woman: "Yes."
Man: "Uguuu...."
Woman: "Does this displease you?"
Man: "Just tell your husband it's his."
Woman: "I can't, he's been gone for six months!"
*husband kicks down the door*
Husband: "OMG, YOU SLUT YOU'RE HAVING AN AFFAIR!"
*husband starts sword fighting with the other man*
*other guy shoots lasers out of his hands and burns the husband's leg*
Husband: "You've used black magic to hurt me!"
Man: "It wasn't black magic, it was the Ya Ying Laser, all my family can do it."
Husband: "I'll get my revenge on you in 20 years!!!"
*man shoots lasers again and blow the husbands legs off, he springs away on his stumps*
Woman: "Now we can be together."
Man's Wife: "What's going on here, honey?"
Woman: "What, you didn't tell me you were married!"
Man's Wife: "That's right, and you're not even good enough to be his concubine, so beat it, slut."
Man and Man's Wife: "HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA!"
*both leave*
Woman: "Uguuu...."

Two minutes, three tops.

Following

Christopher Nolan's first movie and foreshadows a lot of the storytelling techniques that went on to be employed in Memento and, although it was based on a book, The Prestige as well. It's a really good movie that only gives you just enough information to think you have a handle on what's going on, then it pulls the rug out from under you. Good stuff.

According to various reports on these internets, that was indeed supposed to be the planned finish, but then the script got leaked and they changed it.  My question is, WHO GIVES A SHIT?  Who cares if some nerds found out the ending?  Changing the plot and making your movie shittier is not the way to address this.  I think this story change is true, since things are pretty similar (with the roles reversed) at the end.  Another original plot idea was for John Conner to barely even be in the movie-- he was supposed to be this mysterious character that was always in hiding, and people got their orders from him via radio.  Christian Bale IIRC was supposed to be Marcus, but Bale wanted to be John Conner instead, so they rewrote the script.

But then again, other details about some of the original script included Skynet being a resort hotel area with humans living in luxury, being protected by Terminators. :lol

Whenever I read stuff like this, it's just so hard to believe.  Is Hollywood really this dumb?

That spoilered bit would have been a fantastic move, and could have been used in any number of ways. It could have been used even after the revealed fate of John Conner from the end of T3 (which I liked a bunch). I'm still excited to see T4, but will probably kill my brain with some beerage first.

I rented it from the library without knowing anything about it...holy shit awesome movie about predation/vicious cycle of life among other things ( :o). I don't want to spoil anything - the movie is old as fuck but I'd imagine many people haven't seen it.

It was made pretty much by one guy on a budget of around $7,000. It's also one of the most awesome, and realistic, time travel movies ever. Just make sure you watch it at least twice, because you're guaranteed not to understand it very well after the first viewing.

The guy's pretty much gone underground since then though, but he's supposedly in pre-production on a new movie.

Orphan is an unexpectedly good evil-kid flick.  Most everything here feels familiar, but its such a well done genre flick, with really good acting (in a just world, the kid in this could be Oscar nominated for a supporting turn), strong character development, and no overtly stupid characters or actions.  It's actually very closely follows the template of so many early 90's thrillers where normal families were under siege by an initially benign but ever more growing in malevolence outside force (cop-Unlawful Entry, secretary-The Temp, nanny-The Hand the Rocks the Cradle, renter-Pacific Heights), somebody who's clever, ruthless, and highly dangerous, that its a cute little girl who's the one expertly wielding a clawhammer makes it all the better.  As musty and obvious as much of the film has the potential to be, it actually works really, really well.  Amazing what a little cleverness in plotting and competent direction will do.

Speaking of hard sci-fi, you should check out Moon when it hits DVD/Blu-ray. It's pretty much a one-man show, courtesy of Sam Rockwell, and it looks great despite a fairly small budget. It also, unlike Sunshine, doesn't fall apart at the end.

60s or 70s movie - man colonizes the moon, kind of comedy tongue-in-cheek stuff.   I didn't enjoy it that much but with friends it's probably awesome.  The little model vehicles hooning around the moon are classic shit.

MOON ZERO TWO looks pretty fabuloso. The music is giving my wood a bell-bottom. That era of animation is simultaneously nostalgic and unwatchable for me. It recalls a whole era of animation where the jokes just weren't funny at the time, and now that I'm grown up they're just horribly dated.

HELLBOY 2: The Golden Army: del Toro can direct a comic-book/fantasy movie like no-one else. Fuck, even Blade 2 doesn't get sufficient respect; look how badly Blade Trinity went down when left in Goyer's hands. Hellboy 2 was gorgeous, and had some decent, deeper meaning, even if they sort of hurried past it for... whatever the plot was supposed to be. My only complaint is that the pace felt hurried without a distinct sense of progress or reason for haste. Prince Nuada was a badass, but Nuala was wretched and underused. They set up the whole "anyone of royal blood" line early in the film, but
spoiler (click to show/hide)
they say, "ooh, hellboy is the son of a demon... that's kind of a prince..." why not instead have Nuala grow a fucking spine and say, "I dispute your claim, brother -- you killed your father, the king, and this is no right to rule."
[close]
Even if the Golden Army doesn't accept the reason, it should have been attempted.

Overall it wasn't quite as good as the first movie, but still very enjoyable throughout.

I saw Precious the other day.

It was good but it tried too hard imo, like most movies of this type: manipulative of the viewer's emotions, constantly hammering on the fact that the protagonists' life sucks balls. Still, it was pretty enjoyable, but most of all, extremely well acted. I didn't know Mo'nique could act.

Manipulative as in,"Precious' life sucks!" over and over, to try its hardest to get the audience to cry. It's heart breaking because it IS manipulative to the point where it feels excessive.

I just dislike it when movies seem like they were made just to see if you'll cry or not at least once in the movie and Precious definitely fits the bill. That's not to say it's bad, either. It's just not something I would want to watch ever again.

Movies like Elephant Man and Forrest Gump have a perfect balance between heart breaking and manipulative. In those movies, bad things happen to the protagonist, but it's not an endless cycle. There are some storytelling decisions that I truly feel add nothing to the story but for the sake producing more tears they had to include it - on top of the fact that it's an adaptation and the book had it as well.

I guess it's realistic in that I"m sure there are many girls who feel connected to Precious' story, but for some reason the movie rubbed me the wrong way.

Many people would say Forrest Gump is just manipulative trash (not me obviously). Elephant Man is a story about a dude with a truly fucked up life, and Precious seems to be the story of a chick with a truly fucked up life.

Precious is a great film. Maybe you should go see a quality film in the theater from time to time, Maurice. I can't tell you how many times I see your posts about watching a great film three years after it was released on DVD and just roll my eyes and laugh. It's shallow of me, I know, but I still do it.

And about the film title, it was going to be named after the book (Push), but that stupid sci-fi shlock from earlier in the year made them change it.

:'(

I'm hoping it'll rock my face but I dug the first one

Too little time between films, and way too many characters. It has like, what, three villains? And a sidekick?

That's crazy, dude.

I just don't have enough confidence in Favreau to pull it off. He's as good as the source material, sometimes worse.

I want Iron Man 2 to be awesome, but I'm fearful that it will be an absolute mess. Pushed out as fast as possible with numerous heroes, three villains and a bunch of nods to the Avengers? Yeah, not going to end well.

Yeah, that's usually a recipe for disaster. It smells a lot like Spider-Man 3. Use a fan favorite (War Machine!) to build up hype off the source material and brand recognition from the previous film, only to have it disappoint everybody upon release.

I don't really go to the theater unless it's a blockbuster type flick. Where The Wild Things Are is basically the only movie I wanted to see this year, but I couldn't will myself to go see it.

I think the last non-blockbuster flick I saw in theaters was There Will Be Blood or NCFOM, can't remember which

Honestly, with the advent of hd and blu ray, is there REALLY a reason to constantly go to theaters these days? I only go see blockbusters or things I REALLY need to see in theaters and rent/buy everything else so I can watch at home.

There's a feeling that I get from going to the theater that's just lacking when you see something for the first time at home. I love going to the theater, absolutely love it. Especially small art house theaters that are in abundance in Seattle. I love my HDTV and Blu-ray player, but it will never be the same as sitting in a theater to me. On average, I see 3-4 movies every month in the theater. I typically rent 2-3 films a year.

That, and I'm a dirty dirty movie snob who looks down upon the unwashed masses and their feel good romantic comedies, horror flicks and blow-em-up good movies. As one of my close friends put it, "If it's not an animated documentary from Israel about the early 80's conflict, Nic isn't going to see it." :lol

There's nothing wrong with romantic comedies, horror flicks or action flicks.

Variety is the spice of life.

The only problem is when that's the ONLY thing you ever watch.

I like all of the above, actually. They just have to be good. Most of them aren't.

Despite my trolling, I'm going to see Avatar in the theater. I want to see Lovely Bones but most likely I'll wait for the dvd

I'm the type of person who likes cooking food then going to the school library to pick up an old film I've never seen before. :tophat

There are so many films I plan on seeing in the theater that come out here before the end of the year here, but as long as I see Broken Embraces and A Single Man I'll be content.

ZODIAC

Awesome movie. Did not feel too long or overtalked. And as I never read about The Zodiac Killer I didn't know how it ends. Total surprise there. Robert Downey Jr. was amazing in it as well as the main lead, the cartoonist. This was also another movie that strenghtens my theory that "no crappy love story" = great movie!
Amazing movie. Despite the length I find it almost infinitely re-watchable.

And I support your theory. Heat  :'(

waitacottonpickingsecondhere.

Did PD just trash Heat?  Criminy man, couldn't you have picked a better instance of a superfluous love story, like The Departed or something?

The emotional stories don't work in that movie, and instead bring the overall quality down. I hated Pacino's wife (I guess they couldn't get Demi Moore so they got an annoying look alike) as well as the story with his step daughter; Kilmer's love arc is also bad, especially their first argument ("what am I doing in this rat bastard situation?!" ....seriously). So when the shooting starts and the wives tune in to the news, I didn't really feel anything. That could have been a powerful scene.

The romance in The Departed was more tolerable, although still annoying
