It runs great on my Dual Core 9800GT Setup with no slowdown that I've noticed so far, but I don't know exactly how many FPS. There are absolutely no jaggies. The facial animations are much improved over Oblivion, but nowhere near Crysis.

8 cores :o

awesome man! i just bought the pc version @ best buy.  will try tonight after work.  i've got a geforce 8800GT so it should be similar to your performance.  says supports multi-core on the back.  i'm :hyper

Fallout 3 is extremely awesome. It's familiar enough that you know Bethesda developed it, but definitely its own game.

The graphics are bumped up from Oblivion and painted with several thick coats of pure atmosphere, aided by some great music and sound work. Characters look much more like real people than the horrid monsters that infested previous Bethesda games and their voices are much less mechanical and a lot more fluid, something that benefits from better and more diverse writing.

Yes, the game is brown, brown, BROWN, unlike the lush green of Oblivion, but somehow it feels so much more fun to explore. Every little room and building and out-of-the-way corner of the world feels like it was put there for you to gawk at, rather than randomly generated using some computer program. Indoor areas are particularly nice, especially with soft light filtering through the windows.

Did I mention that the writing and voice acting is greatly improved? Because it is. Each town has numerous NPCs with their own personality and voice actor, as well as numerous lines of dialogue. There's also multiple dialogue options in virtually every conversation. Not all of them make a big difference, but you can tailor your responses to suit the character your playing as.

Character faces, while vastly improved, don't move too much aside from flapping lips. It's certainly not a game-breaker, but it's annoying to listen to someone yelling at you in panic while their face shows dull boredom. Especially when everything else in Fallout 3 has seen such a huge improvement over previous Bethesda games.

V.A.T.S. is cool, even if it is something of a glorified cheat button. Basically, it lets you hit enemies on any part of their body, generally with a high degree of accuracy even at low gun skill levels. But holy Moses is it fun to use. Not using V.A.T.S. is still very much a viable option, but it feels positively pedestrian compared to its skill-based brother.

There's lot of healing sources around, generally in the form of water fountains or sinks and the like, but the trade-off is that it gives you a dose of radiation. So it's best to keep some RAD-X on hand when things get dicey. Or, take your chances and hope the next town isn't too far off. Weapons, armor, and ammo are fairly plentiful, especially in raider camps, but guns wear out over time and the areas in between are...well...mostly barren. Money also seems to be farely tight, so don't blow your caps on useless stuff.

So far I haven't really used my skills too much, although I did notice that one sidequest requires a repair skill of at least 30 to complete. There's also a ton of perks that offer you various skills and bonuses. I'm sticking with the old Swift Learned mainstay to start out with.

Also, it runs pretty good on my computer. Load times of quick and I haven't really noticed in frame rate hiccups. I'll try bumping a few things up later and see how it goes.

I've only played for about 3 hours so far, but this could very well be my favorite games this year. It's THAT good. Based on first impressions alone I'd be very temped to give it a high 9.

Yeah, it's annoying, but it's fairly minor even though it's the biggest gripe I've come across so far. At the very least, the improved writing and voice acting do their part to make up for it.

Also, VATS is great on weaker enemies, but going up against super mutants and high level bandits is still a dance with death. I came over a ridge to come face to face with two super mutants, including one with a minigun. I ran away and they still almost killed me.  :'(

Yeah, I'm not too bothered.  It happened in Oblivion and I got over it.

Have you found quite a few new voice actors compared to Oblivion?  The Oblivion people are good actors, but it's jarring that they're the same.

So I got it a few hours ago and haven't got very far at all - just started exploring Megaton - and I don't know how I feel about it.  It's been said before but it really does feel a lot like Oblivion with guns so far.  Infact the vault escape at the beginning is basically the same kind of thing that happens at the beginning of Oblivion when you leave the prison even down to the part where you can change your character one last time before you go out into the world.  I'm having a hard time getting into this. :/

But I like VATS a lot more than I thought I would.  Nothing like seeing a pulled away shot of your guy beating the living shit out of a giant hairless rat with a baseball bat.

I'm feeling kinda owned.  If first impressions are correct, Bethesda figured out a way to inject character into a game.  I'm not ready to say it feels like Fallout (too soon), but I will say that I've enjoyed my teensy bit of time with this more than I enjoyed Oblivion at all.

yeah, so far, so good. it's definitely not as bland as oblivion was, for sure, and it's good and gory. we'll see how it all pans out as the game progresses! that said, it's hard to fault a game where you can beat kids to death with baseball bats

I'm enjoying it quite a bit.  Combat is much better than anything Bethesda has done in the past, still not good, but it can be enjoyable.  It feels like N64 level of gun play.  I tried out VATs and thought it was crappy, so I only use it to locate who is shooting at me.  I'm running it on my PC with everything at max at the highest resolution and it still looks pretty bland, but at least it runs smooth the entire time.

And Xbox Live on my PC is so weird.

i am melee, although i switch to a hunting rifle from time to time to soften foes up before SLEDGEHAMMER TO THE SKULL. melee feels like oblivion -- the swings feel weighty. guns kinda lack a kick, though.

By the time Oblivion came around, I was just sick of Bethesda design.  If it were my first Bethesda game, I probably would have been thrilled, but after going through both Daggerfall and Morrowind, Oblivion really was just the same thing with a fresh coat of paint and a new, terribly annoying level scaling system.  Even if the level scaling weren't in Oblivion, I think I would have been feeling some Bethesda fatigue by then.

My favorite thing that happened so far was traveling and seeing this one dude fighting two enemies, so I decided to help him out by killing them, but then the second enemy gets out a fucking flame thrower and starts shooting it at me.  Realizing that I was about to die, I threw a grenade at this dude and blew his shit up.  Then the guy I saved runs up, grabs the dead guys flame thrower and proceeds to scorching my ass with it.  I'm sitting there like "wtf?" before popping him in the check a couple times...then he actually runs away while begging me to spare him.

And I think the biggest problem with Oblivion (other than the whole leveling bullshit and other issues) was how boring the world was.

Also, I find it funny how this engine was state of the art just like 2 years ago (it was really like, one of the first consistently next gen looking games), and now it looks rather dated.  The upside is that it performs much better (and has very nice AA applied--at least in the 360 version), but golly gee, I want environmental shadows.

Also, faces seem to be using the same stiff animation as before (with little to no body animation in dialogue), but the animation/ragdoll when you are blowing enemies to pieces with weapons is awesome and visceral.

I think it was just because Oblivion used a lot of bloom to cover up the parts that would look bad.  They couldn't really do that in this type of environment.

I was more than surprised that I like VATS and I like it alot since it allows you to target specfic body parts or you could blow a weapon out of someones hand.  You also get the slow motion sequences during the execution of the combat sequences which are way more satisifying than real time combat (which can also be awkward thanks to switching weapons with the crappy 360 dpad).  I also like to see the percentages of each hit, something which you can't get in real time.   VATS fits my FO3 play style perfectly.

Big spoiler about the Megaton Bomb:  Totally unexpected the way it played out.

spoiler (click to show/hide)
The way I handled the whole Megaton bomb thing with sheriff and the guy in the bar that wanted me to detonate it was phenomenal in that the guy wound up taking out the sheriff and then I encounter the sheriffs kid who makes me feel guilty as fuck about it.

I hate myself for this cause I don't want to be that kind of guy, but what are the differences between the 360 and PS3 version?

It's a shame, in light of these impressive design elements, that the PlayStation 3 version is shockingly inferior to the others from a technical perspective. Although the Xbox 360 and PC versions display the occasional visual oddity and bland texture, these nitpicks are easy to overlook. Sadly, the jagged edges, washed-out lighting, and slightly diminished draw distance of the PS3 release aren't so easy to dismiss. We also experienced a number of visual bugs on the PS3. Character faces disappeared several times, leaving only eyeballs and hair; limbs on robots went missing; some character models had an odd outline around them as if they were cel-shaded; and the day-to-night transition may cause odd streaks on the screen as you move the camera around. This version doesn't even offer trophies, whereas the Xbox 360 and PC versions offer Xbox Live/Windows Live achievements.

While there is plenty of somber exploration, you'll still find lots of action.

Aside from a few PS3-specific sound quirks, the audio in every version is marvelous. Most of the voice acting is great, some sleepy-sounding performances notwithstanding. Any game's atmosphere can live or die by its ambient audio, and Fallout 3 rises to the challenge. The whistling of the wind and the far-off sound of a gunshot are likely to give you a chill, and the slow-motion groans and crunch of a baseball bat meeting a ghoul's face sound wonderfully painful. If you get lonely and want some company, you can listen to a couple of radio stations, though the frequent repetition of the songs and announcements grates after a while. The soundtrack is fine, though it's a bit overwrought considering the desolate setting. Luckily, its default volume is very low, so it doesn't get in the way.

Nevermind, sounds like it's 360 version again.
