I was thinking this story would be repetitive because we've already gone over a warlord taking over a country but it really isn't. Crocodile was cruel and hateful person but Doflamingo is just downright evil. Holy shit, I cannot wait for Luffy to knock his shit in.

YEAOH

Caught up! This arc is still flawed in terms of pacing but when it's on it's ON and utterly fantastic. I think things will get better after this arc, because unfortunately an arc where Luffy builds up allies was sorely necessary and needed to build him up as the Pirate King. The problem is that Oda seems to have so many damn ideas these days and is giving EVERYTHING a flashback now. It gives the enemies more weight and a backstory, but it just makes the storytelling more loaded and less smooth as in the past. When there was a weird enemy, it was just a weird enemy. We didn't need to learn about the enemy's past to validate them and the story was often told weld enough to understand their past without a flashback anyways.

While I realize this is a monstrous arc, it had no reason being nearly this long. Oda could have had most of the Doflamingo Executives taken out in just one chapter. In fact, there was one chapter that kind of hinted at that, and that was ten chapters or so ago. I still think One Piece is the best comic book ever but it's like, Oda needs an editor! Badly!

Damn, good stuff!   :D

If Luffy already needs to upgrade just for Do, he's going to need some serious upgrades for the 4 kings and final boss fights of the manga.  Hopefully Oda stops with the Gear numbers at this point or it might get a bit silly by Gear 7.  Haki was cool, looking forward to what next-level upgrades Oda has up his sleeves for the endgame stuff.

But next issue should be fun :)  I never really cared for Gear 3 cause like Do showed, it was big and slow and not really useful for much besides crushing buildings.  Plus it puts him out of commission after.  Gear 2 was awesome though.

tbh I think in terms of power Luffy is already over 50% of what he'll be by the end of One Piece, maybe over 80%. It's possible the manga isn't even close to 50% but that's probably due to flashbacks and fleshing out the stories of other characters and stuff. I strongly get the idea Luffy and Zoro are already closed to maxed out actually. Just look at how easily Zoro nailed Pica. That was fucking ridiculous. But awesome. :whew

I think Oda said the manga was 50% at the timeskip.  So it's definitely further in now after Fishman Island, Punk Hazard and this long arc.  Honestly I feel like getting rid of Do is the first step towards trimming the cast list and heading into end game.  If major player arcs are gonna be long like Dressrosa, I can't imagine there being more than 5 or 6 arcs left in the manga.  So I feel like this is the start of endgame and next major arc or two up is gonna be Luffy getting directly involved with one of the 4 Sea Kings and at that point we're down to only handleful of characters left that can give Luffy a run for his money, so yeah I totally expect the manga to end in the next 5-6 years.  At this point there's basically Blackbeard, Akainu, maybe the military head council if they're stronger than the admirals and the 4 Kings and that's it unless I'm forgetting someone.

Well Black beard is a king now and I don't expect Luffy to have a serious battle with Shanks.  At least not an arcs worth.  Maybe like a show me how much you've learnt fight.

Yeah, Luffy probably just fights one of them + Blackbeard.  I dunno, Oda is good at keeping things surprising.  But yeah, the cast list of "antagonists that can be proper challenge arcs" for Luffy is getting smaller and smaller.  In a way it's a little nostalgically sad, because Luffy and crew can't really just go on fun sailing adventures anymore like Skypiea or Thriller Bark or the whale at the start of the Grand Line.  The story is too focused imo at this point and the crew is too strong so every arc is gonna be pushing the story forward towards the end point and big players are gonna keep being involved.  It's fine, all stories have to end and it's been a good ride.

That was a nice surprise for a late Thursday work day.

I'm cool with 4th Gear.  Better than 3rd Gear.  Logistics sort of work, he's big, strong, haki-hardened but also totally elastic rubber.  Ok, so he can absorb in attacks and knock them back out and can trigger shoot punches/kicks and movements like Bellamy spring movement.  That makes sense as a rubberband is spring-like in movement when you snap it and I like that it gives Luffy some teleportation style speed + better defense + more impact attacks.

What I don't like and is hard for me to accept even in magic book physics comic world is how he can change directions in the air (hmm, actually I can buy this if while flying in a direction he snaps part of himself quickly to change direction and shoot elsewhere) but the last attack with the mid-air direction changing fist...yeah, no.  That makes no sense in any way possible and it annoys me :(  Like all the rest is cool, but why give him a dumb totally bs attack like that?  The best explanation I can give is that he aims at a specific point, like Do's face, and shoots it off with such force that like when you try to pump something with pressure and let go it just snakes around like wild on its way in that direction from the internal pressure.

HMmmm

Also dunno why they translated it as Bound Man when even the line in the notations say it's supposed to be Bounce Man because he's a Bouncey man.

By hardening I'm assuming he becomes less elastic relative to other areas of his arm.  So I'm assuming he can control his armor haki with precision.  If one side of his arm is less elastic to the other then it will bend towards the less elastic part.

The fact that he hasn't lost his cool at all during this entire arc despite all the fuckery going on speaks volumes. Dude is ballin' and will cut that fucking cage into pieces like it's birthday cake.

I expect Luffy to stay in Gear 4th but switch his mode to something else from Bounce Man. Heck, a Gear 5th reveal might be possible as well if we look at last time.

Wonder what Flamingo's desperation attack will be that will save him some time; changing the environment to strings doesn't seem to affect Luffy when he hits hard enough. I still hope Luffy can switch modes from Bounceman to something else and that G4 won't be just that.
