i've been replaying new order in preparation for wolfie 2, game still fucking rules.

also been slowly picking away at battle chasers. it's a good time, mostly the fantastic battle system and great art (as long as joe mad is your thing).

Balls deep in Skyrim, yet again.  Dem modz...  Also tapping back into Dark Arisen (PC)... never finished Bitter Black Isle... it's imperative that I do.

i cant play because i need to do vanilla run for achievements, i cant turn it on because ive played it before and now i want to play with mods.

I spent 40 quid on release for fuck all.

Bitterblack gets really annoying towards the end, and specially annoying in the second run if you don't have the proper equipment.

I still love it though
I must be doing something wrong, cause I'm at level 102 and still having a hard time with BBI.   :doge  I need to double check my vocation.  I think I'm an Assassin, but not positive.  Is a Mystic Archer a good one to try for BBI?  I think I started it, but haven't built it up yet.
Even though I'm kinda sucking, I still love it too.  :P

I've never played Skyrim before (I did finish Oblivion though) despite it being cheap as fuck in numerous steam sales. I've actually got the Switch Special Edition version preordered for next month - should be able to put loads of time into it as I can play it in bed/at work breaks, etc.

Looking forward to it!
I think you'll be in for quite a treat having such a beast of a game in the palm of your hands.  :)

I put all my (achievement) time in the PS3 version..  But I never played the DLC, therefore Dawnguard, Dragonborn and all the ass ton of quest mods, it's like I'm playing the Ultimate Final Director's Cut EX Plus Edition... not caring for the Steam achievements (although they've still been popping up regardless of all the mods.)

I just bought Morrowind: GOTY edition. As somebody who adores Oblivion, Skyrim, and ESO, am I in for a treat, or is it gonna be too dated to properly enjoy?
Morrowind is my favorite Elder Scrolls game. As with most older games, it suffers from minor interface issues. The journal is in chronological order. It would be convenient to have filtered quest log where only active quests are shown. Combat and conversion trees could be streamlined.

I personally don't find it dated at all and it's perfectly playable without mods.

I've since played for a few hours. Joined the Imperial Legion. Died in a Kwama mine endless, endless times. The controls confused me a lot, as did the massive amounts of dialogue (which I like), and the interface. It's a good game so far, though, very well-designed and quite massive like the others. I'm sure it was mindblowingly good in 2002, but I'm still enjoying it myself!

I'm playing Final Fantasy III / 6 which is an awesome but also pretty weird game.
The world ends, you stay with your adopted grandpa who doesn't tell you how to leave a deserted island until he dies.
That's where I am now, the whole world has gone to shit.

Also playing Mario and Rabbids which is weird and awesome in its own way. The best game with Rabbids hands down.
Reminds me of the games Rare used to make with witty writing and nice soundtracks.

Friday is jump and shoot Nazi's day. Kinda conflicted on what to do first.  :doge

The thing with BBI is that the equipments you're using are more important than your stats. You can buy some really good weapons from pawn merchants at the Everfall or drop even better stuff from Bitterblack weapons. Ur-dragon drops some good stuff too. If you'e properly equipped, even the second run is a cakewalk.

Also, this is kinda cheating, but 3 stars+ rusted weapons can put just about every enemy in torpor; using fivefold/tenfold flurry or downpour can break a lot of fights.

Besides that all vocations are more or less viable.

I played quite a bit of Morrowind recently [on the OG Xbox!] and I still love it, but it has aged significantly even compared to Oblivion. A lot of little things that you kind of take for granted over the past decade of Bethesda RPGs just aren't present here at all and the game tends to feel very stiff and slow. Still, I think it's worth checking out if you enjoyed their other games and you can always play around with a whole raft of mods to tweak the game more to your liking.

Playing Quantum Break.  Surprised this game got shit on as much as it did.  Remedy is still the best in the industry when it comes to third person combat.  Kind of reminds me of a less polished Naughty Dog game, the biggest difference being I actually look forward to the combat.

Quantum Break is great. I feel like they should have gone all the way and not had any cover. It really is like a western Vanquish where its a lot about moving around and mixing and matching your powers effectively to the point where you really never use cover.

And you know what? The Story is quite decent.

There was not enough "game" for me in QB, the tv show should've been a surplus to the game experience, not being almost half the game imo

I still ended up enjoying it tho, time powers were pretty damn cool

On Act 4 of Path of Exile but losing steam and probably going to bail. It's a great game, but I think I've lost my affinity for ARPGs at this point.

Got Mario Galaxy 2 happening on the Wii U. Never played it. Seems better than the first one.

I actually started Path of Exile yesterday and reached Act 2 (Forest) already. Fantastic game. My main is Marauder with specs for Sword & Board and Life Leech. Very good writing for what is a Diablo clone, though. Much better than Diablo III's :lol

I've read there are 10 Acts in total now. Jesus.

Plays sooooo good on the gamepad after Titan Quest on MKB.

Yeah thing's a behemoth. I might just check in and out occasionally. Do an act here and there.

Fell back into a Super Mario Maker hole, forgot how much just playing random levels sucks. Weird puzzles, auto play, too many tricky doors, etc. r/traditionalmariomaker has lots of levels that feel just like DLC for the old games.

Wii U homebrew is the only reason my console is still here right now - it can play any gamecube game natively, with real GC controllers, Wii U pro controllers, dualshock 2/3s, etc. And if you have an eshop DS game you can dump it to the SD card and drag/drop replace the ds rom in there with literally any other and it'll work fine.

using the Wii U OS is painful though.

Took a break from Gundam Versus and decided to play some Valkyria Revolution. What the fuck was I thinking. I only paid like $9 for it brand new, but oh my god the cutscenes never end.

I really don't know why I did that, I should get back to Super Robot Wars V or something else that's fun.

Finished a Fallout 1-3 & NV replay. Going to get F4 soon. (Come to think of it, I think my last post here was about NV).

I still think NV was closer to the spirit of the first 2 games. Recovery of civilization, farms (what the hell did DC residents eat?!), cleanish floors, generally not looking like the apocalypse happened two days ago, etc... Building interiors are too samey. Surprising that Bethesda/Obsidian didn't catch more hell for that.

Didn't bother with F3 DLC. There's also an issue with that +35 unblockable extra damage DLC weapons do to you, because if you're sufficiently high leveled in the base game you'll get BTFO by Super Mutant Masters wielding Tri-Laser Rifles in places where they sure as hell didn't exist before the DLC.

Did all of NV DLC. Dead Money sticks out the most in my mind. Way too much time in the Villa and then when you get into the massive hotel/casino, the areas you explore are no bigger than the local no-tell motel. Seemed at odds with how much the casino itself was played up in the story.

Accidentally popped that native american companion at the start of Honest Hearts - he comes up behind a bad guy at a distance and I shot them both. Oops. So I was like ehhhh and just grabbed the map to finish the DLC. Already played it the right way once.

Hurricane Maria barreled through Puerto Rico one month ago and left me without power, internet (or a nornal society in general), so I've had a lot of time to kill and play shit.

Trails of Cold Steel (Vita) - This dumb as bricks anime game asked me to do two whole playground to get the platinum, so I did it one better and beat it three times because of the stupid  100 hours trophy. Not great, but I've played worse.  I should be getting the second game in the mail sometime next week.

Danganronpa: Ultra Despair Girls (Vita) - Much better than it had any right to be. It took a bit of warming up and getting used to, but I eventually got to enjoying the light shooting/puzzle challenges and even got a bit into the story. Shame I already know how this mess ends thanks to the Danganronpa 3 anime. 🤷‍♂️

Root Letter (Vita): This game wanted to be Ace Attorney and Danganronpa and Steins Gate so badly, but it absolutely flubs the execution on any of its ideas. Unlikeable cast, dumb as bricks story, awful ui navigation, the works. If AA5-6 didn't exist, it'd automatically go in the bin as my least favorite ADV ever.

Tactitcs Ogre: Let us Cling Together - I knew Matsuno was kinda lacking in original ideas these days, but I had no idea this was literally FFT Dark ver. I don't like this type of game very much, but I saw a few good ideas i really liked like the turn wheel and having entire classes level up rather than individual units, so I might play it more.

Samus Returns: Honestly feels like a medicore greatest hits collection of a Metroid game. Giving Samus a melee attack to bash short range things would have been better than a counter only melee attack that the whole game is designed around and drags the pacing of the game down to a massive crawl. There's no reason why the mundane critters in this game should be as beefy as they are. Bosses are either straight cakewalks or mercury stream tier awful ideas. Would rather play Zero, Super or Fusion again.

Ace Combat: Assault Horizon 3D - way better than an ace combat game on the 3ds should be. Didn't get far because it controls exactly like you'd think an ace combat game on the 3ds would.

Then once I got some limited power back, I played:

Undertale (PS4) - Every bit as good as it was on PC.

Yakuza 0 - A very heavy contender for my favorite title in the series. 0 takes great strides in making the core combat feel fresh again, with multiple battle styles for its two main chatacters, combat incentives to make me interested in actually try to fight as well and as creatively as I can in regular brawls, and some incredibly hilarious sub stories. I'd almost complain about the game having TOO much to do, but that'd be dumb. Which leads me right into...

Yakuza Kiwami - Remake of the first game using 0's engine and groundwork as a basis, and you can tell. It's pretty fun on its own right, but overall it feels like a step down from 0 overall, with a lot of the "steps forward" that 0 introduced cut down due to it being a remake rather than a new game. Otoh, its great being able to experience the original story/entry for the series, since its kinda the cornerstone from where a lot of future games sprung from. I hope that Kiwami 2 is another step forward rather than just threading the same waters.

Warhammer: Vermintide: End of Days: Way Too Many Colon'd Taglines was US$12 on the PS Store with a PS+ discount. I love the Warhammer universe, so I bagged it. Attempting the Tutorial, it crashed to XMB twice. Trying the main game, it didn't want to let me start a solo game with AI; I'm sure it's in there, but I was unable to read the damned microscopic text for button cues. Some rando joined my game in the lobby, and while I was still trying to figure out the launch mechanism, he started punching me.

Random chaos and violence is canon for the WH universe, but I didn't feel the need for that type of immersion just then. I quit out and booted Horizon Zero Dawn.

The sentiment (sort of) still stands!  :P

:| trails of cold steel rules. actually, maybe the last 10% of the game. trails of cold steel 2 rules.

The last 10% is indeed where the game finally felt like it was going somewhere instead of making cute, constant references to games that will never be localized. Then it ended. Speedstats promised me that Cold Steel 2 was better, so I'm looking forward to that!

Downloaded Fortnite but haven't got a chance to give it a proper go yet

Been playing FIFA 18 and Mario + Rabbids on the Switch. Coming towards the end of World 3 on the latter, and it's been surprisingly good.

A friend in work leant me No Mans Sky. Bit bummed by all the busywork, having to collect and craft constantly just to stay alive and do things like take off in your ship. The game seemed to generate a planet for me the other day that had 2 shards of Plutonium on it and I was stranded for what felt like hours. Having iron asteroids everywhere in space feels kinda iffy to me, and I think I bought too heavily in to the hype, because I expected to be able to fly anywhere and see all of that journey. It kind of varnishes over the seams between galaxies by making you warp there. Warping feels a bit like the Metroid Prime loading elevator to me in that respect. It looks good though, and I like the laid out vibe, it just keeps boring me a bit. Elite might be more my thing, gonna try that next.

Didn't see a thread on the first 2 pages, I'm slowly playing through Samus Returns. It's all right. I really don't like having to tap the screen to switch beams, it barely works for me. You take a TON of damage even on normal, I am curious if you just die in 1 hit or something on that amiibo only difficulty. I prefer AM2R for sure, but my PC controller has broken buttons (I just got it a couple months ago too). I guess PS4 controllers work ok on PC?

Also managed this on FFRK the other day, pretty cool:

A+ Taste. Nailed it with Root Letter, Pqube could have localized a million other things and gave us something way better.

Trails of Cold Steel 1 and 2 are getting PS4 remasters so, personally, I'm waiting on those to jump in even though I already own 1 and 2 on Vita/PS3. (Because I waste tons of money like an idiot  :'( )

Sorry for double post.

Anyway, yes DS4 works on PC. I believe for wired you may still need a 3rd party program like DS4Windows.

Alternatively Sony sells a dongle for wireless DS4 to work on PC. https://blog.us.playstation.com/2016/08/23/playstation-now-coming-to-pc-dualshock-4-usb-wireless-adaptor-unveiled/

They introduced 'magicite dungeons' where you fight a really hard annoying ass elemental boss. You get extra items dropped if you win in under 2 minutes/1:30/1:00 and the best for under 30 seconds. I can barely beat the other 5 main ones in under a minute. The two new ones I don't come close to even winning at all.

I had the same reaction. A boss taking 4-5 tanks in a single hit just doesn’t feel like Metroid to me.

Not to mention that the game loves damage sponges as it progresses.

still subsisting on X360 dregs before I eventually bite the bullet and buy an XBONE (does the XBONE X offer any distinct advantages, do the games actually run better lol? Super out of the loop).

With all the hype around Cuphead I've been playing some BLASTERS! Proper Japanese ones tho  :japancry. Been playing lots of Rez to try and unlock some more achievements, ditto for Hard Corps: Uprising. Great games!

Also checked out Medal of Honor: Airborne as it's free on XBL this month. Obviously an upscaled PS2 game with pretty dated mechanics but the maps are pretty interesting, and killing some Nazis is always sweet

The part that kills Cold Steel's pacing are the free days at school. Nothing of interest happens at school except for its shallow attepts at being Persona lite.  Trying to ape both its social links as well as Persona 3's Tartarus falls flat because neither aspect is deep or helpful enough to make them entertaining. The field studies, on the other hand, are where the game flows well because you're constantly being given direction, learning about the world and seeing the characters develop.

Except the Nord Highlands. That piece of shit map and its garbage horse riding can go rot in the pits of Falcom's worst ideas.

A+ Taste. Nailed it with Root Letter, Pqube could have localized a million other things and gave us something way better.

It's not even like the concept was bad either, which is the whole reason why I checked it out. It kinda has something going from time to time, but fails to make what you're doing exciting each and every time.

(I got a laugh out of the game extras pretending like Bestie was the game's third heroine, when she gets neither a route of her own, an extended spotlight nor really anything to warrant such a claim over any of the other sidekicks.)

I just used a trophy guide/walkthrough that told me how to spend my free points per period.

Here's the one I used for Cold Steel 1 & 2

I wanna jump into Cold Steel but I'm holding out a faint glimmer of hope that the Crossbell games get translated (I heard these are the best in the Kiseki series?). I've beaten the 3 TITS games and am dying for more, TITS:SC is one of my favorite RPGs ever I think.

Currently working on my SNES Mini, particularly games I haven't played yet (after doing replays of DKC and Castlevania 4, which I for some reason liked much more than back in the day - though I was in a good mood after being pleasantly surprised by Rondo of Blood recently).

Starfox - Kind of shocked how well this plays. It's easy to hit what you want, evade, etc. Awesome music to boot, decent stage variety. No idea what to do with the dragon boss in route 3 though.

Final Fantasy VI - Seems like this will be the first FF I thoroughly enjoy besides 7. The audiovisuals are almost on par with Chrono Trigger, which I didn't expect. Love all the different characters with different abilities to shake up the battles. Only "problem" so far is that no character can properly develop. From the very beginning, you're constantly changing between new people, so there isn't too much specific dialogue for each character outside of a few (if any) main story scenes related to them.

Megaman X - Fun shooter, although it felt a little too cryptic to find out some bosses weakness compared to older Megaman. Currently can't get past the spider in the castle.

You play the F4 DLC Borys?

I’ve been putting it off for a while now, but I still feel the need to see it to completion.

Gonna try to jump back in to BotW after being too busy the last few weeks to play. I've done the Zora and Goron beasts and I think I left off dicking around the area of the map near the Rito quest.

While I get the complaints about the world being kind of empty, the exploration more than makes up for it. A big part of the fun is all the different shit that sidetracks you when you decide to head in X direction. As cliche as it sounds, the whole "if you see it, you can go there" idea actually fits perfectly since the game usually doesn't give you waypoints where to go. It's just designed so that landmarks are visually striking even at a distance, so it naturally appeals to people's sense of curiosity. If the next Zelda builds on all this and adds in some proper big dungeons and works on improving the emptiness part, it could be some real GOAT level stuff.

This is a stupid mentality that I see a lot with the Kiseki series. I played through Cold Steel I and II (in Japanese, no less) without any prior knowledge and everything was easy to understand. Start playing the PS3 games, you'll be fine.

Cold Steel 3 constantly mentions stuff from the Crossbell games. It's not essential, but it's pretty damn important to play them before 3 and I'm sure 4. 1/2 doesn't matter as much but there's some stuff CS spoils from Crossbell which will make those games less enjoyable when they bring them over.

Also CS3 wants you to have played Sky as well since there's major stuff from there too. CS1/2 were entry point for new players, CS3/4 is like dude, you've had plenty of time to catch up on Sky/Crossbell, get at it.

You should get VitaTV and play the Evo games.

Yeah like, I was fine playing through Cold Steel 1 having not played the Crossbell games, but the game and zero effort to hide that you're missing a lot of winks, nudges and references to events that are happening at the same time and never get talked about because there's another game that covers them. You wull still understand the overall story fine, but I will freely admit to being a bit bitter that I will prob never get said callbacks unless a miracle happens and those games get localized.

People said the same thing about I&II and I was like "yeah, this makes sense."

Maybe it's just me, but I long ago abandoned the OCD completionist mentality I see with lots of RPG fans.

On my phone so I can't type much but I played Sen 1 before Zero and Ao but played Sen II after playing those. I had more of an appreciation of some of the nods to Zero/Ao in Sen II after but i don't think it's super crucial to have played them before either. I also played them in Evo form which a lot of people I know didn't seem to care for but hey it was easy to experience the games that way for me.

Point is, Sen I/II are fine to jump in as is. There are things you'll go "aha" at if you played the others but it's not a big deal if you didn't. I think falcom even said that they wanted to make it easy for newer players to jump in at Sen.

But tbf I'm not a huge Kiseki fan in the first place since I generally like 3rd, Sen II, and Nayuta and those are structurally different from the other games.

I haven't picked up Sen III yet since I just started working after graduating and writing my licensing exam so I'm still trying to recoup my funds from the exam cost/medical stuff. I might import it when it gets cheaper since lol Canada exchange rate.

I wanted to import DQ11 3DS for a while but I keep forgetting and I'm not sure if it's gotten cheaper since release. Everyone keeps saying it's good.

I'm holding off on importing games that have a good chance of actually coming over, like DQ11, Yakuza and Cold Steel III. Felt strange waiting for the domestic release of Gundam Versus I'd rather support localization efforts.

The only game I'm even considering importing at this point is City Shrouded in Shadow due to what's likely a licensing nightmare, and I'll probably wait until I go to Japan in April.

Yeah, so many things get localized now that you don't even have to import unless you want something early. I was in an RPG rut for a while too so I hadn't been feeling like playing large scale RPGs outside of xiv for a bit.

Is DQ11 3DS coming over or is it just the PS4 version? Either way I've played DQ5 PS2, DQ7 3DS, and a few of the spinoffs in JP and I had a wonderful time with them so I'd like to play more that way since my Japanese has probably gotten quite rusty.

There are a few series that I prefer to play in one language or another so I just stick to importing/not importing because I'm so used to attack/spell names in one language over another for some games.

Oh, I have been playing Cuphead. It's hard af, but I really enjoy the aesthetic. Lots of bosses have similar animations to some old cartoons or games (there's a nod to Batman and Robin for Genesis IIRC, and one to Street Fighter), and I had a blast with with I've played so far.

I finished Danganronpa V3 a few nights ago and I'm not too sure what I think of it yet. I do feel like there are too many mini games and I didn't feel too attached to the new characters. But the music is pretty bumpin', and the aesthetic and menu/transitions are nice to see. I guess if I'm still thinking about whether or not I liked how it ended, maybe it did something right? I'm not sure really.

I also finished up Root Letter around the same time as Sunblade did and I feel about the same way he does. I thought it was very dry and getting all of the endings was incredibly repetitive that I stopped giving a damn halfway through. The protagonist and almost the entire cast were unlikeable to the core, and didn't seem able to carry the story.

Picking up AC Origins this week and another VN out on Friday and it's nice being able to find time to play stuff again.

The best part of Root Letter
spoiler (click to show/hide)
was the Cursed Letter ending where everyone died. It was the only ending that was even remotely satisfying.
