Hurricane Maria barreled through Puerto Rico one month ago and left me without power, internet (or a nornal society in general), so I've had a lot of time to kill and play shit.
Trails of Cold Steel (Vita) - This dumb as bricks anime game asked me to do two whole playground to get the platinum, so I did it one better and beat it three times because of the stupid 100 hours trophy. Not great, but I've played worse. I should be getting the second game in the mail sometime next week.
Danganronpa: Ultra Despair Girls (Vita) - Much better than it had any right to be. It took a bit of warming up and getting used to, but I eventually got to enjoying the light shooting/puzzle challenges and even got a bit into the story. Shame I already know how this mess ends thanks to the Danganronpa 3 anime. 🤷♂️
Root Letter (Vita): This game wanted to be Ace Attorney and Danganronpa and Steins Gate so badly, but it absolutely flubs the execution on any of its ideas. Unlikeable cast, dumb as bricks story, awful ui navigation, the works. If AA5-6 didn't exist, it'd automatically go in the bin as my least favorite ADV ever.
Tactitcs Ogre: Let us Cling Together - I knew Matsuno was kinda lacking in original ideas these days, but I had no idea this was literally FFT Dark ver. I don't like this type of game very much, but I saw a few good ideas i really liked like the turn wheel and having entire classes level up rather than individual units, so I might play it more.
Samus Returns: Honestly feels like a medicore greatest hits collection of a Metroid game. Giving Samus a melee attack to bash short range things would have been better than a counter only melee attack that the whole game is designed around and drags the pacing of the game down to a massive crawl. There's no reason why the mundane critters in this game should be as beefy as they are. Bosses are either straight cakewalks or mercury stream tier awful ideas. Would rather play Zero, Super or Fusion again.
Ace Combat: Assault Horizon 3D - way better than an ace combat game on the 3ds should be. Didn't get far because it controls exactly like you'd think an ace combat game on the 3ds would.
Then once I got some limited power back, I played:
Undertale (PS4) - Every bit as good as it was on PC.
Yakuza 0 - A very heavy contender for my favorite title in the series. 0 takes great strides in making the core combat feel fresh again, with multiple battle styles for its two main chatacters, combat incentives to make me interested in actually try to fight as well and as creatively as I can in regular brawls, and some incredibly hilarious sub stories. I'd almost complain about the game having TOO much to do, but that'd be dumb. Which leads me right into...
Yakuza Kiwami - Remake of the first game using 0's engine and groundwork as a basis, and you can tell. It's pretty fun on its own right, but overall it feels like a step down from 0 overall, with a lot of the "steps forward" that 0 introduced cut down due to it being a remake rather than a new game. Otoh, its great being able to experience the original story/entry for the series, since its kinda the cornerstone from where a lot of future games sprung from. I hope that Kiwami 2 is another step forward rather than just threading the same waters.
