Finally beat Super Mario Bros. Wii, with all the secret levels and 231 Star Coins accounted for. It was a wonderful ride from beginning to end.

I'll tackle EXCITE BOTS next, but I fear it will hit the backburner once my copy of House of the Dead: Overkill arrives.

Been playing Tales of Graces which is very, very good (about 1/2 through).  Probably 2nd best Tales game after Abyss.  Much better than Vesperia in story & gameplay & even art design.  Who'd have thought Wii would actually have a legit AAA rpg? :o

Also playing Uncharted 2 online here and there with duckroll, himuro and now the [gaf] clanners.  Some of those gaf guys are amazingly good.

About to start Kingdom Hearts PSP.  Duckroll has been blabbering for days about how it's best psp game ever and stuff.  Looking forward to it!

So yeah, very enjoyable gaming atm.  Need to get back to Bayonetta after I finish some of this stuff.

There's going to be a X360 port of Abyss? Or am I just being naive here?
I also missed out on Abyss.

No way. Vesperia was fuck awesome. Wait till you finish it before casting aspersions on Vesperia!

I didn't like Vesperia that much as a long time Tales fan.  The main lead was amazing and the game looked nice but the battle system got boring by 40 hours in or so and the plot was pretty bad in the end 1/3rd where it became about the summons and random boss for no reason.  Basically it was great for 30 hours or so and then less than stellar for the last 20.

Graces at least has Vesperia beat on the battle system for sure.  Team Destiny battle systems are always > Team Symphonia battle systems.

so - it fell apart after 30 hours, how do you know Graces won't do exactly the same?
How many hours in are you? I am mildly interested in Graces.

Graces is only 30 hours long :P  I'm about 20.  The thing is the battle system in Graces won't get boring because you don't max your skills early on.  The problem with Vesperia is you learned all of your moves in the first half of the game and then it's like...no new moves for 30 hours.  So you're just doing the same combos over and over.  Some Tales games have a small moveset and suffer from this problem.  Others have very large movesets and don't.  Graces has a large move/ability set and is spread out nicely.  You have about 120 titles to learn 5 skills each from and it takes a battle or two or four to learn a skill.  So you're constantly getting a new stat, move, ability every other battle which keeps the game fresh and there are so many stats that you'll never learn them all by the end of the game.  Plus since you can choose which title you're learning from at any time you have a lot of freedom in developing your character.

Also there are very few encounters compared to other Tales games.  I usually finish every Tales game with about 1000 battles fought.  I'm maybe 2/3rds through and I've grinded a bunch and I'm still at <500 battles fought so far.  If I hadn't grinded I'm guessing I'd be around 300-400 battles fought.

So less battles, shorter game length (Team Destiny games are always about 30 hours for the main story and are tightly paced as opposed to 50-60 hour TS games with more padding) and tons more moves/abilities to learn = doesn't get dull.

The story could take a nosedive.  It's not particularly good.  But it's a decent animu narrative with good party characters.  All the Tales games have bad stories & great party characters outside Abyss which actually had a good plot and maybe the first half of Vesperia's plot.  In the Tales group of plotlines, Graces being non-fillerish and following a standard narrative alone (without furries or racism) makes it one of the better ones.

Art design-wise it has more in common with Abyss than Vesperia did with Abyss.  Graces's cities are colorful like Abyss with lots of rainbow sparklies and greens and water.  I prefer that style over the darker purples/browns/greens that Vesperia used.  Graces animates better.  But Vesperia obviously has the cool cell-shading and clean visuals.

There's a good chance Graces will get a visual boost when it's [probably] ported to the PS3 later this year too ;)

As much as I'm enjoying The Last Remnant, I really wish it had a legit world map. When your only means of traveling between locations is teleportation it sorta ruins the whole concept of immersion. Going from beautifully detailed cities and sweeping plains and giant castle ruins to a 2D map rips me right out of the universe. It's like the scope of the world is as narrow as ever but they just do a better job of hiding it.

What's Square's reasoning behind this gayness again? And is this an element that is pretty much uniform in RPGs these days (i.e. Lost Odyssey, Tales of Vesperia)?

Vesperia has a world map as does LO eventually.

In fact, I think teleport worldmaps are in the minority.  Shadow Hearts, LR, Symphonia 2 are about all I can think of.  I actually prefer them as I want my rpgs to be as fast as possible so instant travel = great!

It just bugs the SHIT out of me when a current-gen game is trying to crib reality (basically all of them) and then contradicts that pursuit with almost antipodal design choices. Glad to hear that particular aspect isn't extremely prevalent, though.

But you also hated Fallout 3, right? Maybe you just aren't big on exploration? I guess it's just subjective

And KH BBS is alright once you get past the intro area full of tutorials and cutscenes.  It also reminds me how KH games (KH1/2/358) all have absolutely horrible level designs.  Probably worst part of the series.  Big square rooms with things to jump on.

The battle system is cool.  And I dunno if the game is punishing me for not playing it in the recommended order (I'm playing as Roxas clone because I <3 Roxas, but you're supposed to do Terra first) but I got fucking OWNED many times on the first boss until I finally beat it after learning all patterns and blocking.  It kind of mirrored my first experience with a real boss in Bayonetta (ch.2 endboss) except with worse controls here, lol.  I also died twice on an escort mission in the first world until I learned the trick.  So it seems I really suck at this game ^^;  I was fine in KH1/2/358 so dunno what's up.

Graphics are nice.  Being able to use 32-bit color and ditch the dithering is awesome.  Same with being able to use 333mhz for a locked 30fps.  Only thing keeping it from looking like the PR shots is AA.  Maybe someday PSP emulator will come out and PSP games will look amazing (in little windows on your monitor).

Generally enjoying it.  If the first world was any indication it seems like the game is bite sized KH1/2.  It plays out exactly like KH1/2 but the worlds are very short and it's more about 3 character playthroughs of the worlds to get the whole Disney story for each world.  The first world took me about 1 hour with Vennut.  They call him Ven which sounds like Ben so I am pretending his name is Ben which is the most normal name a Nomura character will ever have.

The only thing I'm disappointed in is the cutscene direction.  When Square has good cutscene direction it's really good with awesome MGSxAdventChildren-style action and great dramatic posing and line delivery.  KH1/2, FF7:CC, Crystal Bearers, FFXIII all have exciting cutscenes.  So far the cutscenes are pretty average like Dissidia.  Hope they get better when cooler stuff happens.

Eh, I really like world maps like wrpgs or DQVIII & SD maps like FF7-9 and most Tales games and other DQs.  I'm not that big on linked worlds where each area just connects to the next like FFX/FFXII/FFXIII/Graces.  I just prefer point n' click maps because by 20-40 hours into an rpg I've spent so much time walking around I'm over it and instantly teleporting sounds great when I'm just running errands.  Fast air vehicles are good too since you can get around super quick.  The best is point n' click WITH exploration like the original Fallout.  I like that I can get from one place to another in about 20 seconds and it'll stop if I discovery anything worth seeing on the way.

My problems with Fallout 3 have nothing to do with the world map and everything to do with the places in it, the lack of adequate transportation, the combat, the dialogue and the story.

Meh, almost all the Tales crew and myself rank Vesperia around the middle of the 10-12 mainline titles that exist.  Vesperia is a good game, but as a Tales game it's just average.  I think I'd rank them:

Abyss
Graces (tentative)
Eternia
Rebirth (would be #3 but furries take it down a notch)
Vesperia
Symphonia
Destiny 2
Phantasia
Innocence
Tempest
ToS2 (didn't finish; too horrible)

and I haven't played the original Destiny or the Destiny Remake still.

Except that you have to find the places first and it can take a WHILE.  Whereas in the original Fallout to go to a new city or something took like 20-30 seconds from the current city.
I mean I played with the motorcycle mod that let me move at 10x speed and there were still some Zelda boat-ish travel times.  Sure you'd find little dungeons to stop at along the way, but the dungeons were all Oblivion style copy & paste corridors that take 30 mins or more to run through and all the loot sucks.

The thing with Fallout 3 is it really caters to the gamer that likes to branch out from a quest. When I first played the game I would head in the general direction of a quest point but would explore other markers I haven't explored yet along the way. Do what I do, If my equipment space is full, go back to my place to unload and fast travel back.

I can see where it would be a problem if one wants to focus on the quest at hand but you end up having to re-explore that same area anyways (for markers/areas you have missed). But you only really need to travel to far out areas like a few times, once you really explore the map it becomes easier to fast travel to areas that are closer to quest points. Which in a way goes hand in hand with slow and arduous at first and quick and easy when on becomes more experienced (or in this case, well traveled).

Battles play like Xenogears, but obviously not as detailed.

I thought the mechanics of swinging were really awesome and there were times when it all worked together and it became fuck awesome.  A lot of times when it didn't work was because of how the levels were designed.

haha, guess they didn't "fix" the US release much.  That game was the most broken rpg I've ever played.  The balance is so screwed.  Hard at the start and then super easy with crazy hard spikes for the rest.

The skills upgrade is wacked as fuck too. Everything costs so much to upgrade one point, and it lowers the stat for the other bit too (ie. raise accuracy, lower attack). You basically have to be even to have decent stats.

I never understood why people get stuck on this boss so easily. The very first time I fought her, I think it took around 20 tries, sure, but ever since then it's like 3-1 attempt/s and it's done.

I hate the train, the controls (especially when you're on ice) suck, I hate blowing into the DS to use the flute, so far there's nothing redeeming about this game, and I'm only trying to play through for completionist sake (since I beat every other Zelda so far).

Tried playing CoD:WAW on XBL for the Co-Op Campaign achievement...game put me in a squad with three screeching 10 year olds who kept dying and calling each other racial slurs instead of killing the enemies. Couldn't get the achievement damnit.

lol, I got those by luck I guess. I did the tank level with a bunch of distinguished mentally-challenged fellows.

The other one I did by destroying the competition on the beach level.

With WaW's co-op and competitive campaign, Nazi Zombies, and regular multiplayer I do like it more than MW2 for now. If IW can add some shit with the map packs, then fine, but right now WaW gives you more playability. And fuck IW for not putting in multiplayer achievements.

Yeah, Spirit Tracks blows. I just made it to the ocean area, now I have to backtrack all the way back to the snow area to fix a bridge... ugh. I hate the train, the controls (especially when you're on ice) suck, I hate blowing into the DS to use the flute, so far there's nothing redeeming about this game, and I'm only trying to play through for completionist sake (since I beat every other Zelda so far).

I just did this last night.  It gets worse when you start having passengers and have to follow the speed up/slow down sides along the rode while BEING CHASED BY 1 HIT KILL EVIL TRAINS smhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh

worst game ever

Every time I tried getting the CoDWaW competitive co-op achievement some bitch would drop out before it ended and I guess that means it doesn't count.

:piss Treyarch and multiplayer achievements

I got the competitive achievement even when half the match dropped out. Started with 4 and ended with 2 and I still got it.

FFS I'm starting to really regret buying Spirit Tracks and I haven't even started playing it yet.
After Phantom Hourglass was so good, it's such a disappointment. Typical Nintendo, I guess.

Everyone will give you shit about how PH was terrible already, but I'm with you.  I enjoyed PH.  It wasn't zelda at its finest, but it was a lot of fun and the touch controls worked well.

Spirit Tracks is unplayable.  I don't understand how this game didn't get 5/10 or lower across the board.  That would have been a real wake up call for Nintendo that they released a truly awful product and need to cut the tedious crap out of Zelda once and for all.  Everyone I talk to is like: Train portions 2/10, Rest 8/10.  But when the train portions make up 75% of the game time... :wtf
