Played a bit of Blur on PC (picked it up in the Steam sale). Seems about what I expected - a sub-par Mario Kart dressed up as Burnout. I'm sure it would be fun in 4 player split-screen or something but I don't think the SP is going to hold my attention. Looks pretty crazy in 3D, although the menus are a mess.

Split Second

Yeah, I'd give Split Second a whirl too, just haven't been motivated to go look for a cheap copy anywhere. I don't feel the need to play every damn thing anymore.

Demon's Souls really isn't that hard. It's certainly a challenging game, but I think its difficulty gets inflated because we're in an era of babby easy games made for everyone to enjoy. It's just fairly old school.

It's not even that old school.  The game really isn't overly punshing.  Super Meat Boy is 1000x more punishing than DS could ever be.

All you have to do in Demon Souls to not screw up is to play carefully.  Don't run at full speed like a moron, but instead WALK through the areas being aware of your surroundings.  Even if you die as long as you pay attention you'll get back to where you died fine the next time and get your souls and not lose anything.

Although it also just depends on your starting class.  Royal makes the game accessible and even a little easy.  Melee classes are far harder and make you work for it.

Just got my first 1-ALL for Daifukkatsu. :D

Green ship, strong mode. No miss'd the entire game up to the final stage, then I had to start burning some bombs and lives. Finished with two lives and a few bombs though. Only had like a 2 bil score by the end.

Excellent game though. There's such a huge variety of modes and playstyles. Once Black Label comes out, I'm sure DFK will have the most modes -ever- in a shooter. I love the fanservice too. You can take secret routes through the stages and fight the Dai Ou Jou bosses instead of the usual midboss. The music changes and everything. So awesome.

Super Meat Boy (and its ilk) isn't that punishing imo. Yes, every level requires you to play perfectly, but they're also designed to be beaten in like 20-30 seconds on average. Whereas in Demon's Souls, if you die near the end of a level, you have to do the whole thing over again, unless it's a level with an unlockable shortcut. And on top of that you drop all of the souls you've acquired, so if you die again before retrieving them, they're gone. Dying in Demon's Souls means something.
spoiler (click to show/hide)
Of course that death penalty means nothing when you can just go to 4-1 and farm thousands of souls with ease. I wish they would have patched that and rebalanced the soul drops
[close]

The game does get pretty brutal on new game+ though. Especially if your character has poor stat distribution and equipment (like me on my first time through)...

Yeah, but demon souls doesn't require that level of skill.

SMB requires you to be a 10/10 gamer level.  Only the most hardcore of the hardcore 1% of gamers will 100% that game.

Demon Souls requires you to be like a 5/10 gamer level.  If you can beat Uncharted 2 on normal you can beat Demon Souls.

Well, in a few weeks we'll be able to see since steam has global statistics and we'll be able to tell exactly what percent of people can 100% the game.  Right now only 1% have beaten world 1 without dying  :lol

I'm only on world 3 so maybe you're right and finishing all the light world/dark world/warp world/bandages is not that bad.  Dunno yet.  The "you have 3 lives" retro levels are the hardest so far since you have 9 tries to do 3 levels straight perfectly.  Some of the dark world is kind of nasty too.

238 out of 5,972 (4%) of the people who own Meat Boy on TrueAchievements.com have the 100% achievement. But you can cheat for it, so it's most definitely a little inflated.

Mygamercard.net shows 2% (384 out of 15,868). It's a challenging achievement, but there are way way waaaaaaaaaay harder ones.

It's impossible.  I tried for about 3 mins before moving to a X360 controller.

Btw, does the game have the same jump lag on the X360 version as the PC version?  You hit A and he jumps about a 1/2 second later so you have to press early.  Sometimes it's annoying like I was doing a series of walljumps and I had to jump the instant I touch the wall so I had to actually press A before I touched the wall or he wouldn't jump soon enough.

No, the controls are tight as hell. No input lag.

The mechanics are the same, but it's a different game and objectively worse.

I tried the X360 demo and yeah it seems like it controls a bit more responsive than a X360 controller on the PC version.  I don't think it's a huge difference, but I feel like there's some lag on the PC version.  Gonna look into it.

I might just be crazy too.  So Beezy don't take my word on it if you want to double dip.  I haven't seen anyone else really talk about any minor lag.

There is a flash version but I don't know if it plays the same as the full game.

It's pretty awesome Himuro.  Up there with N+, vvvvvvv, and Trials HD as the best platformers in forever.  Although, obviously these "hard 10 seconds of challenge" newage platformers are a very different genre than something like Mario or Jak & Daxter or Maximo or Ghouls n' Ghosts.  I honestly don't think they're all that comparable, but this new style of short burst hardcore platform challenge is a very fun and rewarding genre even if it's kind of frustrating at the same time.

What's the general consensus on using guest characters to get bandages, beat stages?  Sometimes they're pretty useful (especially for bandage collecting!)

btw, I fixed the lag.  If you have d3doverrider running at all times to force triple buffered v-sync for games it'll give a small input lag which kind of affects games like this that need the accuracy.  I'm actually surprised I made it through 100+ levels with that lag  :lol  All good now though.

Perfect controls, creative & varied level design, challenge, tons of secrets, a bunch of different characters to play as (12+?), hundreds of stages (and they're all good.. except a few), good music. It excels in every area. I'm not really sure how to describe how awesome it is. It's a simple game but it's perfectly executed.

Some bandages require a certain character in order to get them, so you kinda have to play other guys once in a while. I'm sure there's plenty of stages that can be beaten super fast by using some trick with another character, but I always just stuck with Meat Boy because he doesn't do anything fancy. Just run and jump.

Every time I got a new character in SMB I thought 'ok, this one has a useful ability!', but really... the best character is meat boy by far, just because of his speed and the way he controls. Getting an A+ grade with any other character is automatically hard because they're just a lot slower. See the thing is: this game is designed for speed (runs). The easiest route through a level is when you rush it. e.g. if a level has patrolling ghosts, their pattern will not obstruct you if you're fast. go slow, and you'll have to wait and avoid them. Taking your time for levels is rarely a good idea here.

The Kid is useful to get to some bandages and Jill's air brake is has its uses here and there, but after a few deaths I always go back to meat boy.

'best platformer in X years' sounds like hyperbole but to me it really isn't. SMB is just insanely good. This one review said it pretty well: ''it seamlessly avoids the frustration of dying by shielding you from your own aggrevation" You will die countless times during levels but it never gets frustrating.

I played N+ a bunch when it came out, but to me SMB outclasses it in every way. It has a nicer presentation, the levels have more variation and the controls are better. There is also more obstacle variety in SMB. The later stages of N+ were pretty much a barrage of homing rocket + laser levels, while this keeps enemies tied to an area. Rockets are a world 3 staple, repulsors world 5 etc.

Depends on the level. I know there's at least one level with repulsors that thans like 25 secs to beat with Meat Boy, but you can beat in like a second with Spelunky.

The new Trials HD levels will give good challenge to anyone.  Seems like each category is actually 1 level higher from what I've played of easy/medium so far.  As in easy = low-tier medium in original game, medium = low-tier hard in original game.  The gold times also seem way more strict for these new tracks.  Seems like I'll get a lot of playtime out of this pack.

i've finaly decided to bite the bullet and give a spin to Sakura Wars

it's a pretty original gam, basicaly you just talk and talk and talk and try to pick the right things to say,
it really reminds me of persona S.Links tough it's nice to know that if i pick the wrong answer,i don't have to sit trough several "YOUR RELATIONSHIP IS GETTING DEEPER" screen as a punishment

the actual SRPG part is really just there for the sake of selling this game to RPG fan, really you might remove it and nobody would notice,it's also really easy, your character can heal at will and most of the time they don't take too much damage (tough i once tried the offense formation which decrease your defense and prevents you from healing while fighting a boss and it wasn't pretty) your character don't gain any experience (instead your companion strenght depend on how much they like you tough it's hard make them hate you) so i'm not sure why they do even bother with sending mooks against you, boss battle's are always against giant multi part mech which is really fun

the voice acting is a little corny (gemini VA seems desperate to nail the country girl accent whenever she opens her mouth) but actualy i think it really fits the 80' anime atmosphere the game has,the music could have used improvement and uh... there really isn't much else to say other than the game is basicaly just a big :uguu

of course i'm talking about the wii one since it's the only one in english
tough i'm reading the let's play on SA of the original which is what actualy made me curious enough to give this a try...

anyway i guess i should talk about the character a little since the game is all about them

- gemini is the country girl, she goes around playing super hero donning a domino mask (obviously nobody notice the identity of the mysterious stranger) and owns a horse (who also goes around masked) she act's ultra lovey dovey toward the main character (in fact i think it's the only character which i never ever pissed off) and basicaly goes like "THAT'S SO COWLLLLL"

- cheiron is what you get when you combine judge dreed with a black ghetto woman (no,i'm not exagerating the last bit) she never ever stops talking about LAWWWWWWWWWWW even during her special attacks, she uses an energy whip in battle

- subaru is the mysterious japanese silent androgenus chick, other than speaking in 3rd person and generaly not giving a fuck there isn't much to her,she uses fan in battle

- ratchet is probably the only character without any apparent gimmick which makes it ok in my book, she uses throwing knives in battle

1000'd Mafia 2. Really awesome game. Love the setting, theme, characters, writing, story, music, and all that. The gameplay is solid, but not particularly great - it's just a standard cover-based TPS. The driving controls were great though, especially compared to GTA4. I passed on the DLC since by the time I was done collecting all the stupid wanted posters, I was all Mafia'd out. I didn't mind collecting the playboys though. :)

Bought the Trials HD pack too. The new stages are good, but I'm starting to feel like I should be restarting every time I mess up, instead of hitting B and going back to a checkpoint. Kinda like credit feeding an arcade game. I guess I prefer the stages that are so hard, just getting to the next checkpoint is an accomplishment. The beginner/easy/medium tracks are too easy and not really satisfying to complete unless you 0 fault them, but I kinda lack the patience to restart every time I mess up a jump or something. Eh whatever.

Still playing Dodonpachi too. There's too many damn modes in the game and I don't know wtf I'm doing in almost all of them. Arrange A is really really fun though. That might even be my favorite mode in the game. I downloaded the #1 replay for it and I was like :OOOOOOOOOOO. There's so much shit going on it's unreal. Guy got like a 100,000 hit counter on stage 3 I think. :lol

Gamefly finally sent me Naruto UNS2 as well. Been looking forward to playing that for a while.

wow fable 2 is FUCKING TERRIBLE.  this feels like i'm playing a harry potter-liscened game, and the intro NEVER ENDS.  i just want to kill some townsfolk jeez
Just tough it out.  For the first hour or two it's basically all hand-holding gameplay and story.  Once you're a teenager and have magic plus real weapons, it's pretty awesome.

my ps2 can't read DVD9 anymore :-\
the thing that really sucks is those lips that require movement with both analog sticks but since i'm playing it on a wii with the wiimote+nunchuck combo it's one analogue stick and one digital pad and they are horrible to pull off with such a configuration
