That person isn't me at all and I find it funny Fistful is acting this high and mighty when he can't beat mega man x.

But at least I don't try to blame the game and complain about it's design and I acknowledge my own shortcomings. I can see what's there to appreciate and enjoy in Mega Man, but I accept that it's not for me.

I have to admit. Dark Souls was MUCH better after the initial bell intro with the ninja enemies and shit. Enemies that werent boring to fight line the skeletons. The problem is the I ultimately don't find these games fun. Even when I'm not finding the repetition annoying, I find the games pretty unfun. Dark Souls is a long game, and I quit 30 hours in to it. I got my fill. I'd rather play an SMT.

I have never blamed the game for its shortcomings. I have critiqued it for not being a good game. Because a game has a higher difficulty than average doesn't mean I can't critique or talk about what I don't like.

That's not what you or your trophy list said when you first started ragging on demons years ago.

Arguing whether souls is good or not is a tired, obnoxious argument. I regret entering into it. Clearly I rlly like it and all the haters just seem like butthurt contrarians. Nothing much else scratches that itch like Souls.

It's been six years since I played it. Couldn't you only save on one file? I remember tension and being pissed at times but it wasn't a deal breaker at all.

You could also only save in toilets which were not that common.

I really liked the idea as it added to the tension and style of the game.

Perfectly fine and perfectly paced. I only used one save, and got the perfect ending my first run. I never started over. Gave the game tension and a unique method of play. Played it like 6 or so times.

Way of the Samurai 4.  Imported the UK version earlier this year and finally getting around to playing it.  Game looks and runs rough.  That new yakuza samurai game looks miles ahead of this and it itself doesn't look particularly great.  Still very fun and this is one of the few series where I can play essentially the same thing over and over without getting bored.

A sort of big change from the other games is having stuff carry from one playthrough to the other.  The series has always been groundhogs day with samurai, in a sense, but now certain events and notoriety influence the next playthrough.  As an example, if you successfully escort an English teacher to the language school, that school will be open in other playthroughs and your character will understand and speak English.  The whole conflict is xenophobic Japanese dudes vs English people (vs/plus Japanese people who want English influence in Japan) and it lead to some interesting scenarios.  Other than taking away the choice to kill important characters at any time, almost everything is a big improvement over WotS3, assuming you enjoyed any of these games at all.  I don't think these games appeal to most people.

Structurally I liked the first Way of the Samurai a lot. You get one decision at the start and then it fans out from there. Made it much easier to follow down the paths, even though I didn't end up trying out all the permutations. I was satisfied with however many endings I got back then.
WofS2 was a big headscratcher for me. I did a couple of quests and then didn't know how to progress through the story from there. Did those quests again (finding a person and bringing back some guy's daughter) and then I was lost again. I don't want to play with a guide so I just put it down.

I've been busying myself with Avadon lately. Pretty good, pointless exposition and a few other things notwithstanding. The combat is the best part, writing and story less so. I chose the warrior and I run with the viking ninja and the mage most of the time. I tank and the viking ninja gets to backstab or throw his oversized shuriken, depend on the situation. The mage stands back and throws spells every now and then.
I'm mostly keeping to standard tactics as far as skills go, but positioning matters a lot. You can actually be a meat shield for your caster, partly because there are a lot of narrow corridors, but also because enemies can't just run past you, even if there's enough space. When they're stepping within melee range of a character they're stuck unless that character is stunned/dazed or knocked back. That changes things up a bit, but for the most part it play fairly similarly to Infinity Engine games, only with a lot less licence cruft as far as skills and spells go. Loot's kinda boring though in comparison.

My biggest issue: Pointless sprawl and game length. It could have done with a lot more density, rather than this retreading of rather sparse but large areas. It's very obvious that there's relatively little content that's being stretched rather thin. I get the feeling I'm going to visit each region three times during the course of this and the enemies aren't going to be all that different, neither are the encounters, or even the side-quests... Rather reminds me of Dragon Age 2, what with the central hub and going on missions.
The main quest missions are OK and the dungeons have a few twists to them (the sudden flooding was pretty cool), but they're straight forward room-clearing affairs for the most part.

I get that it's an indie game made by (mostly?) one guy, so it's a pretty impressive effort no matter what, but it's rather dull going through an area knowing that you'll be back before long, feeling very much like you're running errands. The story justifies it, but twenty hours in I want to be well done with the prologue and set-up for the bigger conflict that's obviously brewing. That's saved for the second game in the serious though, it seems.

La Mulana

so i kinda gave up and i'm just playing full straight with the wiki... even with the wiki it's still complicated because there are so many item chains that force you to go all over the game before being able to accomplish anything in any sort of place

in the meanwhile i defeated viy and got tons of cool toy after finding the entrance of the tower of goddess which is basicaly the entrance to the second half of the game, the idea was to kill palenque next but the process to even meet him is so long and convoluted that i still haven't being able to do it... i swear after i'm done,i'm writing a mini guide just so that other people can play this game properly

you know a while ago they had a "WHAT IS THE HARDEST PUZZLE EVAH" thread on neogaf and some of the first replies were like "hur dur water temple" and after the stuff i have seen i kind of want to slap these dipshit... so i'm going to explain one of the most bullshitty la mulana puzzle... are you ready for this?

spoiler (click to show/hide)
in order to unlock the final upgrade of your whip, you need to solve a puzzle with a scale on it,the puzzle give you a bunch of gems and tells you to put them on your left or right in a way that the scale doesn't tip but you have no way to know the weight of each gems... well the game tells you in 4 different signpost put in 4 different location that have nothing to do with the zone where the puzzle is,the signpost themself are pretty vague and just talk about "the weight of a joyful heart" and then some other post goes like "the joyful heart is white!" do note that the game leave some of them undefined so even after finding all the signpost you have to guess some yourself

but wait! even if you try to add and subtract all of the gem,you never get to 0... why? because you have to add the main character weight to the calculation of course! how do you know how much your character weights? thanks to a weight machine hidden in another completly different stage, but alas that would be too simple so the weight machine tells you your weight...

...in la mulana fictional language, what? you tought those scribbles were just random stuff? tough fucking luck! oh and by the way the game never teach you la mulana fictional language you just have to sort of guess it yourself

this is without saying that to reach the puzzle in question you have to get an ocarina,in order to get the ocarina you need a statue that is in another different zone, after getting the statue you have to backtrack to a previous level and wait in the middle of a room for no fucking reason (at least the room itself change so you can sort of guess that you need to do something there even if that something is "do nothing") to power up the statue then to get the ocarina you do the waiting game again, but this time you have to actualy pause the game and wait instead of just waiting because i don't know my head is already hurting

oh and before doing all of this you actualy have to flood part of the stage where all of this happen,in order to do so you have to go back to the previous water stage and pull two lever! but wait! this is too simple! so to reach the first lever you have to go through a fake wall,do note that it's not a fake wall close to the lever,no it's just a random fake wall that for some reason magicaly brings you in front of the lever even though if you looked at the map it wouldn't make any sense at all... and to reach the second lever you have to go to another stage that has fuck-nothing-at-all to do with the water stage, you see in that stage there is a vase (it's the only vase in the room but it's not really suspicious because the other room have plenty of random vases too) and if you press down while on top of that vase you warp in front of the second lever... do note that this is the only vase in the game that does this and that you can actualy break it,so it would be like if they made a breakable block in super mario bros that worked like a pipe for no other reason than to fuck with you

but no you see,the hardest puzzle ever? it's the water temple :beli

I played through La Mulana until I got the stabby knife and then came across some winged lion boss that I couldn't seem to beat. It was fun for a while though. It's just a bit heavy on the esoteric exploration though.

There's only one save slot, and you can save at the Security Office, or any of several toilets. Most people who were bitching about it didn't know you could save at toilets, IIRC.

Save points and save functionality in general are a metagame function, and are rarely well-enough considered in game design. Introducing something new, as Dead Rising did, is at least challenging the status quo.  Players who demand that PC-like quick save anywhere functionality should be used in every game are either ignorant or stupid. Game designers who put out hour-long levels without save points are stupid or ignorant or sadistic.

La Mulana

finished! you know maybe i'm just saying this because i'm finaly done with it,but when you get past all of the cryptic bullshit this is the best indie game i've ever played,no seriously! it's just so well done and you can see how the creators of this game loved konami games very much, like you can see a lot of the graphic technique that you would see in a konami 1994 game on something like the turbografx but nothing that is outright stolen and the end result is that it really feels like you are playing a new konami game from ye olde good times

it's such a shame that the indie moniker is used for retro-inspired hackjobs and artsy fartsy shit instead of more games like this one though i guess i shouldn't be too much surprised considering it took me a piss contest to actualy decide to play it myself,it's even a quite meaty title too,it took me 11 hours to finish and that's without counting all of the reset and dying i have done

so go play it,it's even 75% off on steam right now... i'm probably going to write some cliffnotes later so if somebody here on the bore decided to give it a try they can check the cliffnotes for when they get stuck

yeah, WotS2 was kind of a mess.  WotS3 and more so WotS4 made things simple like the first game.  The fun of it is that each playthrough can take under 2 hours and it's about exploring and discovering the different changes through your actions.  Getting the best endings in these games is like the end of groundhog day when bill murray is a master of world.

I just like it when games do that groundhog day thing where you relive the same period of time and use that future knowledge to influence the past.  off the top of my head there's Majora's Mask, 999/VLR, Last Express, and to a lesser extent Dead Rising.

Hm, maybe I'll put WotS3 back on my list then.

Finished Darkstone on normal. The last boss is nuts. You basically need to fill your inventory with potions, hack it down to about half health while mainlining the potions, then use the magic McGuffing you've been assembling the whole game to prevent him from regenerating. Then you've got 30 seconds to finish the job. Pretty harrowing, but fun, dodgy controls notwithstanding. Definitely very much inspired by Diablo 1.
I don't think I'll continue on the other difficulties, but I've kept my save just in case. The higher tier items I saw on the vendor at the end kinda made me want to keep going... My warriror can apparently only get a bitching plate-armour on the highest difficulty.

 One word verdict: quaint.

Worth playing?  I don't care for MH because of the grinding and multiplayer focus and 100s hours long game (partly due to both of the above).  I'd be down to play a story based 10-30 hour single player focused version of MH.  I think God Eater is supposed to be kind of like that.

It's definitely not like MH, imo. I say it is Phantom Dust co-op.

There are some sharp difficulty spikes that may require you to do some side-stuff to beef up your stats and equipment, but I didnt have much trouble.

I'll play some Avalon Pacts if yo decide to try it. Single player can only be played by yourself.

I beat Soul Sacrifice's main story - and got about half of the Avalon Pacts finished. The AI is dumb as bricks if you bring them with you, and nobody seems to want to play this game online when I try. So I am going to put it aside and play something else.

Yep  :lol

And they give whatever creature you are fighting extra HP because of their presence. It best to just sacrifice their asses for extra damage to be honest

The difficult stuff is in the Avalon pacts since it gets crazier as you go through it (like dual creatures  :'( ).

Did some adventure gaming over the last few days while I'm finishing up ACIV, Puppeteer and Sora no Kiseki SC

The Walking Dead Season 1, Episode 1 - The first half of this was kind of slow, but once you got to the hotel and it mixed interactive story-telling with STEALTH ACTION GAMEPLAY, it felt pretty fresh and great!  Having played most of the Telltale series since the first Sam & Max Season, they've general been painfully average with terrible pacing as they have limited assets and try to fill a 4-6 hour episode with it, which is tons of padding.  Compared to their past stuff, dropping out the filler, cutting the episodes down to 2 hours has done wonders for the pacing and enjoyability of the games.  Plus the Heavy Rain-esque cinematic style works pretty well here and the cell-shading looks fantastic.  Enjoyed the first episode a good deal outside of the ridiculous of the story point where

They get to Macon and are trapped IN HIS PARENT'S PHARMACY which is just so convenient for the plot and heavy family drama out of nowhere and kind of unrealistic and totally unbelievable.

Otherwise, it was a good ep.

The Walking Dead Season 2, Episode 2 - This one was done even BETTER!  It was like this great little 2 hour movie.  Really good pacing and some character development, some mystery, and it all comes down into an exciting conclusion.  If only the story was the most generic, been done 1000x before, story episode this would've been amazing.  But it was still really enjoyable even if the story was super predictable and you're just waiting for the twists to happen because you know what they are.  I'm looking forward to future episodes because if they can pull off this presentation/gameplay mix but with some actual good writing and non-cliche stories they could be incredible.

Broken Sword 5, Part 1 - It's ok as a throwback to the old series, but super slow and not much happens until the end.  The art is fantastic cell-shading with gorgeous 2d backgrounds, the puzzles are alright (some good, a few ridiculous ones) and there's a handful of locations and stuff does happen by the very end, but it should've been about half the length and should've been one game instead of 2 parts.  I have a feeling being two parts led to stretching each individual part out so instead of a 6-7 hour adventure there's two 5 hour adventures.  Can't really pass judgment on this until the 2nd half comes out in Jan, but it's passable so far.  It does make me want to play BS2 though, I only played the first one because I heard 2 was a huge step down despite great 2d art and then 3&4 are ugly 3d box-pushing from what I hear.

The Room + Epilogue - This was quite good.  One of the first mobile games I really enjoyed.  The puzzles were very well done and lots of fun.  The visuals and everything fit together real well.  Liked how they made good use of multi-touch and other mobile control features.  Story-wise/atmosphere, I wish it was more scary.  It felt like they were trying to ape Amnesia's plot with the letters and Victorian psuedo-science, but while that worked in Amnesia, it's not really creepy here and just comes off as a Nickelodeon special.  Hopefully the sequel has more focus on the story and is actually scary.  Because while the gameplay is great here, it's still lacking because it doesn't have a good story driving it.  That's why the best adventure games work, it's a combination of good puzzles and a good story motivating you to progress through them.  Good start though.

Still playing Graces F, made it to the last save point of the epilogue chapter, gonna grind a little then finally finish it... then I'll start on Zelda 3DS I think.

I really liked Graces F at the start but it really really really started to wear on me at the 45 hour mark (then I had 30 more hours to play, think I'm up to 75 now)... game could have really done with less combat and shorter dungeons.

BS2 is fine. I don't know in what way it would be a step down besides not continuing the templar saga.

BS3 is indeed infested with block-pushing nonsense (and it's the lazy kind, with normed crates). I think there are minor stealth segments as well.
The story continues the templar saga, probably as a reaction to BS2. The ending though is kind of nuts even for this series' standards. That's probably one more reason why people didn't like BS2 that much actually, the mythological aspects grew more prominent and literal as the series went on. The first game had much more mystique in that regard. I guess Charles Cecil figured that now that the cat was out of the bag he should jump in with both feet? I liked it, all in all.

BS4 was - stupid. Less block-pushing crap if I remember correctly, but the story is worse. There's one really bad shark-jumping moment fairly late into the game where George doesn't recognize Nico by her voice and it's just - that's the last thing I remember about this game. I don't even remember what the main conflict is. Templars again? I really don't remember.
It's broken on modern multi-core CPUs unless you limit it to one core. When I played it wasn't enough to set the affinity to one core in the task manager, I had to boot with only one core. And it's not like it won't run with more cores enabled, it will, only all the character models will be solid black for some arcane reason.

During my time playing Soul Sacrifice online, this game way more fun with a group of people. Assuming they know what to do, anyway. Sometimes you get random ass low levels joining in when you're about to play some high level stuff. Sorry bro, you're the first to get sacrificed.

Stick it to the man!

this is... pretty good,it's kind of a mix between a platformer and an adventure game, you move around like you are in a 2D platformer but most of the gameplay revolve around like solving puzzle's like in an adventure game, the puzzle's themself aren't really hard which would make for a pretty lame adventure game but the scenario themself are pretty hilarious and crazy, the game start with you playing this guy called ray who works as an hardhat tester, while going back home something falls into his head and it turns out be some sort of alien/sentient bioweapon which now inhabits ray brain thus enabling him to read people mind thanks to a sticky hand sprouting from his head

at that point you use the sticky hand to take toughts from people in the form of stickers and slap them on other stuff to get more item and solve other problem and the chain can get pretty silly, for example in one level ray decide to speak with a psychiatrist about his new condition, but the psychiatrist can't be reached because it's talking with another different psychiatrist about a recent trauma... the reason psychiatrist n.1 is sad is because his father ended up dead before they could patch thing up... you see his father was a lobotomist and tought lobotomy was a better solution than just speaking about feelings like a sis so you need to summon the ghost of his dead father

but to do so,you need to find a medium... but the medium is currently chaining the victim of a magic trick going wrong,as a wizard saw the ghost leg,the ghost can't now move into the afterlife (or move at all) so you need to find a bunch of legs

which you find in the form of a single wrestler fighter, made by 2 tall people beating one single smaller guy... but wait! after getting the legs, thus getting the medium, thus summoning the ghost, father and son still keep bickering,so you go talk to a pair of father & son clowns and help them come up with a new circus trick,so that the father start praising the son,so that you can steal the sweet words from the father clown and slap them on the father ghost thus finaly give some peace to the psychiatrist

of course this lead to a lot of dialogue and the dialogue itself is pretty funny, one of the guy you speak with early in the game is obssesed with the silver surfer nes game which i found pretty hilarious considering it's one of the better AVGN Episode then you combine all of this with a pretty unique artstyle and you've got yourself a game that is kinda lame to play but really compelling to watch

Started up Wild Arms 4 on a whim. Pretty cool systems so far, from combat to character progression to dungeon exploration. WTF at everything else. So bad, it's entertaining in its own right. The world is apparently governed by five shriveled up ghouls in Super Sentai-like uniforms. The military elite soldiers/generals look like a bunch of motley fools and behave accordingly. The dialogue is sooo bad.
from 9:12 onwards.

The story had me perking my ears soon after. As soon as a character went into "winners write the history books, war crimes to some, heroic deed to others" territory. I want to see where Japanese writers go with this. :heh
