and put me in with the side that has no problem jumping from dq to dq. the series has extremely consistent tone and gameplay, so I can pick any game in the series to scratch my itch.

Willages, haha. I hope you're using party talk feature. You get lots of character details. Alena just wants to smash shit, she rocks. The party talk feature was new to me in the ios version because it was taken out of the ds version, but it adds so much to the game.

I hope you enjoy chapter 3. It's honestly one of the most refreshing and progressive parts of an rpg, ever. And it really hasn't been topped, even 20+ years later.

Magrunner: Dark Pulse
First person puzzler in the vein of Portal. The gimmick in this one are "magnets", switching polarities in pads and cubes to move platforms or launch yourself across gaps and such. Later on you get to create your own magnetic point. Good level/puzzle design, though some of them are a little screwy, especially when you have to generate momentum by switching polarities around. I also just skipped a quite elaborate looking level on accident. Also: Cthulhu.

For the past few years, beat em ups have been my go-to genre. As I become more and more of a casual, beat em ups pose as something that many games lack in that you can just jump in one instantly just kick some ass. It can be challenging sometimes, or it can be an easy beat em up, but I consistently find them fun. Combined with some Metroidvania elements and I figured I'd enjoy this. Unfortunately, it's a complete stinker. The illustration art is beautiful, and the combat system has a little potential and those are the best compliments that I can give it. Steam desperately needs Symphonia of the Night on its service. I should have gone with Double Dragon Neon or Metal Slug X instead.

Shadow Warrior is dope.  Great pacing between shooting and exploring for secrets.  It has a nice high score element for replayability, and the killing isnt just run backwards and shoot.  Pretty convinced Poles make the best FPSs at this point.

Legend of Grimrock
The sequel's release reminded me that I have it. Pretty fucking good so far. Movement took a bit of getting used too, but I can circle strafe now after binding left and right turn to A and D respectively. Single enemies stand no chance. :smug
I had a tough time with one of the puzzles (you had to use a throwing weapon instead of just 'throwing' :beli ), but otherwise this is a really smooth and addictive game. Pretty sure I've missed some secrets already that I may or may not go back to.

As for me I've taken up Radiant Historia I'm just a few hours in but I already have some concerns, mainly:

- Having to do things over because you screwed up but had no way of knowing it was the wrong thing is offputting
- It's a handheld game with no quicksave function?

That second one is particularly bad for me, that might be a deal breaker outright.

If it wasn't coming out two days before Bayonetta 2, I would be getting it, but eh.....I still need to beat Wolfenstein

Besides Wolfenstein (which I've been enjoying), I've been playing a bunch of DJMax Technika Tune (which I think I'm finally starting to get the hang of it again) and I'm still trying to complete all of the damn races in Forza Horizon 2

Tried a little more of Radiant historia but I'm almost certain that it's not gonna work. When I have to stop playing I have to stop playing and no quick save kills it. There's sleep mode but I can't ever be sure that my DS will have enough battery to sleep until I get back to it.

The Legend of Korra

Just finished a platinum run on Extreme mode (this game doesn't have pure platinums). I'm uploading the videos of each chapter if anyone wants to check it out: https://www.youtube.com/playlist?list=PLfI6IYca_kvOerh6QkDhs99ef2VdlJLtq

Overall, I enjoyed the game. It's about what you'd expect out of a low budget $15 Platinum action game: simple musou-esque combos, low enemy variety, only a couple of bosses, very short story, etc. The ranking system is also pretty half-assed. It doesn't grade you on both combo and time like Bayonetta does, so it's impossible to tell if you're taking too long to finish a fight or if your score isn't high enough. The solution to that is to just use air-bending and mash Y, since it does a ton of damage to everything around you and racks up more points than just about anything else.

But again, I liked the game well enough for what it is. It's probably the best cheap downloadable 3D action game out there, although I'm not sure if it has any competition besides Mitsurugi Kamui Hikae (and Korra is better).

I know I’m not on the right landmass for seeing the ads and marketing buy-in here, but has this launched with as little support and preamble as it seems? It’s like... nothing has been said about it since its surprise announcement.

I’m the king of iOS right now, and mainlining Trials Frontier. It’s not bad! I mean, the roulette wheel for items, tied with an item-specific grinding mechanic is... well, let’s just say it feels low-handed, but it is going to get more money out of me than I’d like to admit. It ALSO has a “gas tank,” which limits the number of races which can be completed, which is my least favorite type of F2P limiter, but I can re-do the same race repeatedly as long as I want. Accepting the grind-able item at the end is the point-of-no-return.

Been playing Street Fighter III: Online Edition. I hate this game because it encourages being random, the combo system is weak and there is an overreliance on hitconfirming into supers.

That said, there is no other fighting game like it out there, which is why I keep coming back to it. It's very fast, fluid and once you get into the rhythm of the game it becomes extremely fun. Beasting someone in this game feels incredible. You rush them down, put the hurt on them and then they get frustrated and start doing predictable shit which allows you to easily parry and continue rushing them down. Fun game.

All that means is that every track is interconnected and that there are no loading screens unless you restart a race. There's isn't much in the way of open world 'activities' besides smashing billboards and big jumps, both of which are fun to do.

Did you beat the elder ogre on the way in?

As for me I've taken up Radiant Historia I'm just a few hours in but I already have some concerns, mainly:

- Having to do things over because you screwed up but had no way of knowing it was the wrong thing is offputting
- It's a handheld game with no quicksave function?

That second one is particularly bad for me, that might be a deal breaker outright.

Radiant Historia is also cheap on Amazon and has good reviews.  Definite maybe...

Elder Ogre?

I have not seen one yet.  I got the (first?) void key which was above the "condemned goreclops," then started exploring the area beyond that door, with a courtyard full of grimgoblins and 2 regular cyclopes.

Where I saved and quit for the night, an ogre-looking creature was in sight... appeared to be a standard ogre, though.

Radiant Historia is an excellent game hindered slightly by its lack of budget - the music is great but there are too few songs in the game, the animation is poor, not to mention there's quite a bit of backtracking. Still the story is mostly captivating (falls apart at the end if you go for the 'good' ending) and position-based battle system, where you can knock enemies around and set traps on the battlefield, is awesome. Game definitely feels like you are playing a long-lost Saturn or PS1 RPG.

And how can you not love a game where a Boar attacks by farting on you, thus lowering your ATK.

Drakan - Order of Flame
I wanted to play this for ages and now I did. Well, for its time it must have been pretty good, but Ocarina of Time came out a year before and did everything better, from combat to dungeons and dare I say looks? Drakan has you riding a dragon through gigantic, almost seamless levels, which beats riding a horse, but it's a pretty shallow game all around. Combat seemed broken, too. Could have been bugged out due to me playing it on a modern system, or it could have been just really strict timing on the inputs. Either way, I could never do it consistenly so I beat most enemies by circle-strafing, abusing their slow turn speed. A tiny minority I shot with a bow. Felt silly but not boring, as your character is quite fragile, even in armour. The boss fights were a joke though and the dungeons aren't worth mentioning, though they were fairly varied for what they were.
The biggest obstacle in the game came in the form of a button that I had overlooked, trapping my dragon on the other side of a gate. I stubbornly wasted my time trying to clear the area, which I was obviously supposed to be tearing through on my dragon. I just though the game got tougher. Turrets? Whatever, serpentine, we got this. Flying hellbeasts I can't beat on foot? Seems excessive, but OK, just gotta find the lever that let's my dragon catch up and then they're toast. ...Turns out the button was right next to the gate. orz

All this Burnout Paradise hate. :stahp

Drakan: The Ancients' Gates
First off, the poly count is obviously higher, but it's hideous. Even the cover looks like straight to the bargain bin material. They also don't acknowledge the first game's semi-cliffhanger ending. And Arokh's (the dragon) new VO sounds weird.
Anyway, the game itself is a lot less bare-bones. There's a proper town with NPCs to talk to and sidequests that are tracked in a journal. There's also a level-up system that gates the use of better weapons and there are merchants. You don't have to scrounge for equipment and hoard it any more in case your weapon breaks. Rynn can even cast spells, though I've not tried that out yet. The UI looks  like you might have draw a symbol to cast them... Combat is not too different from the first game. They've added lock on to make strafing easier on the controller and the monsters seem more nimble, but you can just roll behind them now. Three hit mashing combos replace the directional swings of the previous game, but only the first hit stuns reliably, which, combined with the backwards roll has some serious cheese potential. There is some new jank, too. Sometimes the middle hit of a combo won't connect and I think merely touching the enemies' weapons can damage you, wether they're in an attack animation or not. Either that, or the very first wind-up frame damages you, not sure.

Initially I thought that they had lowered the difficulty because the enemies didn't hit nearly as hard, but that was dispelled in a side-area I may or may not have been well equipped enough to go through yet. The enemies there hit like a truck and there are new grunt mages whose fireball takes off a third of your health. Those were rough fights. I even had to use an invincibility potion to beat the boss of that area. Thankfully the game let's you save-scum or I wouldn't have even got there. Not sure if I'm going to trudge through this one, but since it basically lets you save-state already I might actually do that to spare myself the load times and just dash myself against it until I get bored.

Wayward Souls

The best way to describe this is Zelda with rpg elements, the beginning tutorial is a no win situation I think, when you die you get to make another character, you know for the life of me I can't into console style games with touch controls, so I am really glad I plopped the money down and got the Moga controller.

Definitely got some souls vibes at least with the rogue character, who has a stamina meter, not sure if the other classes have this tbh haven't tried any other ones as of yet, need to put more time in to this but so far it seems pretty solid.

I played some random rogue likes on my tablet, can handle those with touch, and the Fire Emblem clone (Tactics Maiden).  :aah

Drakan: The Ancients' Gates
Turns out I was right and it's not as difficult as I thought. You just aren't supposed to go to the side area yet. It has been much smoother sailing now, just like the first game. I even went through a 'callback' side dungeon that had the some of the same obstacles as a dungeon in the first game. I was cynical at first, thinking of it as recycling, but it's not like they could copy and paste this stuff AND it was a side quest.
Dragon combat kind of blows though. Controlling him is much harder and you have to use the lock-on to hit anything, which means you can't lead your target. His attacks have a bigger delay, too and the fire breath was nerfed, which on the one hand is good because I had no cause to use anything but in the original, but air combat is now much more tedious.
I also tried out magic and I'm happy that you don't have to draw the spells yourself, it's just a fancy equip animation. I guess they felt it necessary to separate speels and regular weapons so you wouldn't be able to easily switch between all three. Considering how powerful even level one spells seem to be I can see why. Might have to put some points into magic instead of ranged weapons. Would free up space in my inventory, too.

Don't think I'll write about it again, it's thoroughly mediocre, but I think I'll finish it. Competently executed B and C tier games are quaint. There's some ineffable kind of appeal to them that I find hard to resist.

Costume Quest

I always need a good game to enjoy with the woman, and this was something I missed back when it came out on Xbox Live, so I grabbed it for Steam, and am having a lot of fun with it.

It has a nice, simple RPG battle system, which either myself or my gf can handle capably and still feel challenged.  Different kids, have different costumes that have different powers, which is where a good chunk of the battle strategy is derived.  It also has tons of charm, like when your little munchkin sized character turns into a huge Gundam warrior or a lightsaber wielding Spaceman.

The game it most reminds me of is Paper Mario TTYD, which is obviously a good thing.

I like the writing, the setting, and the light exploration elements.  I'm trying to get through it tonight so that I can try Costume Quest 2 on Halloween.

I loved Burnout 3 so much back in the day. Can't imagine playing it for the first time almost ten years after it was released, though.

My main game at the moment is Sen no Kiseki II, which is absolutely great old school JRPG fun on an HD console. Turn-based battles, crazy epic story, mecha, etc. Too bad for others that it's Japanese-only and I don't see a localized version coming any time soon.

However, I played through the first map in Super Hero Generation last night. Plays just like the SD Gundam G Generation series, but there's a bunch of Ultraman and Kamen Rider characters that I know absolutely nothing about. Not as hard as the Super Robot Wars games, but plays similarly.

I tried to play some more SSX3 but I think I'm a bit burned out on that game still. Really don't like how the game is structured.

But I noticed a huge difference from Burnout 3, though.

The soundtrack.

The soundtrack is fucking GODLY in this game.

Burnout 3 :pacspit

Pretty sure SSX3 was all I played sophmore and junior year of high school. If I was sad or depressed it was my go to game. Do a quick full mountain run. God tier game. Bought a god damn PS2 network adapter that I still never used for this game.

I've never seen snow IRL but I imagine the first time I do, this song will be playing in my head.

:rejoice

Maybe I feel detached
I may just look too shy
It's a disinterest not
That I'm a timid guy
I call them bodies but
They are attentive too
I feel the social glare
I feel the attitude

yeah, it's fun.  by default it has easy air control jumping but you can turn that off.

Finally beat Wild Arms 2, including every secret boss but the last one. Didn't want to grind the extra few levels needed to beat him. Great game but it started to wear on me towards the end, the penultimate dungeon being very frustrating. Probably my least favorite out of the ones I've played (1, 2, 3, XF). Oh well on to #4 now... which I heard is generally regarded as the worst.

Also started playing Bayonetta 2. Only did the prologue and first 2 chapters but damn its awesome. And my gf likes the character too.

Then played some lame indie games on Steam that my brother had. Nidhogg and some qwop esque game. And also played some Forza Horizon 2 (the house music station is incredible) and Sunset Overdrive. I'd get those if I ever get an Xbone, but they're not the type of games that would push me into wanting one.
