Really? I know not of these things. I'll d/l after the fact, I just wanted to see Machida take a chance on putting BOTH feet off the ground on a takedown artist like Randy. What a gamble!

Thanks for the .gif!

Really boring fight which is why I never wanted to see this match-up. Not because either guy wasn't trying but because their styles were destined to create this match. Shields has shit stand up and a great ground game so GSP wasn't going to get in a ground war with him. He was going to slowly pick him apart on the feet but shields was going to be uber defensive on his feet so he didn't really get hurt. It felt like those Silva fights versus Leites and Maia which were also boring style matchups.  Shields was completely outclassed and couldn't do anything better than GSP so it lead to an ugly style fight. the fact that it wasn't GSP's most impressive performance didn't help either. Hopefully this spurs them to do the superfight. Does anybody really want to see GSP maul another outclassed welterweight for 5 rounds.

smh @ GSP. Mentally weak, and I don't care what anyone says. Worse than the worst of Anderson's bullshit. Hominick impressed me infinitely more

Machida's career-ending Karate Kid KO was worth the PPV price, though

Just to be clear I don't have anything against GSP fights. I think he fights smart. I don't think he necessarily needs to knock out his opponents for me to be entertained. I think normally he does very damaging stuff on the ground. All you generally have to do is look at his opponent after the fight to know they've gotten their ass kicked. That's impressive to me whether he stops them or not. Tonight wasn't a great looking fight in that regard. But every fighter even champions occasionally have a less than impressive outing.

GSP fight was shit.

Yep, I can admit it.  First time that I have been genuinely bored by GSP.  The eye injury can explain some of it, but he was fighting tentative and awkward even before that.  Those winging overhand rights?  I mean, it shows that you're throwing power shots trying to finish, but what happened to your varied striking game, Georges?

Anyway, outside of the ME, the event was INCREDIBLE.  Obviously the Canadian fighters all got pops.  Rory Macdonald started out with just a slight crowd reaction, but picked up enthusiasm throughout, and when he hit those slams?  OHMYGAWD the place went insane!

Couture might have gotten the biggest reaction of the night.  Everyone was on their feet for his retirement sendoff.

And my boy Hominick.  Fought his heart out, did better than a lot thought he would do.  And though he lost, that fifth round was a hell of a moral victory.  Crowd was ridiculous for that whole round.

Great experience.  If the main event had even been decent, it might have been the best UFC card ever.

and damn if I wasn't wearing my heart on my sleeve for Mark's fight.

He got great cheers just for being a Canadian in a title fight at the start, but by that fifth round, he became a legitimate Canadian MMA favourite.  I wish he could have won the fight, but if he had to lose, this was the best it could have happened.  And I'm so glad my brotha got PAID for that fight.

Same for Rory Macdonald.  Mild pop to start with, but he earned his cheers by the end.

Two new Canadian stars were made last night, at least for this country.

And I think it definitely proved that the UFC can handle stadium shows.  The experience was just as good as in Montreal.  Better, actually, by virtue of a much stronger card and more amazing fights, even though I was further up (in the 500s).

What's the deal with "Testosterone Replacement Therapy"...? I'd never heard of it before MMA, and here there seem to be a number of these fighters being treated for it. Is it just an easy, theoretically legal loophole in the rules against doping?

Because Dana doesn't like Anderson Silva and Chael almost kicked Anderson's ass? And Nate is almost always the almost-top-contender?

There is a very biased but insightful article, here:

Yeah that's what bothers me. Admittedly I haven't read up about everything on this issue but it seems like Nate handled this situation comparatively well to someone like Sonnen. And all Dana does is kiss Sonnen's ass and he seems to have thrown Nate under the bus here.

Right, here's the deal

If you go to a doctor and have low testosterone (pay attention later), you can get a doctor to prescribe you shots to raise your testosterone to your normal level. Nate was taking this therapy, took some shots a number of weeks before the fight and by the time he had to take his medical the levels were still too high.

Only two fighters in Nevada history have been licenced for testosterone replacement - Dan Henderson and Todd Duffee. The Sonnen situation was completely different, he made up about 100 stories including he had talked to Nevada State Athletic Commision head Keith Kizer (he didn't) who said it was ok for him to take it, he didn't put his therapy on the pre-fight medical sheet, also claimed he was having the therapy twice a week which is more regular than usual as well. This is also along with his real estate licence fiasco.

So anyway what can cause your testosterone to drop? Cycling off steroids, since your testosterone levels are through the roof when you're using them. Why is this important?

Quote
Although his debut ended in success – Marquardt earned a decision victory over UFC veteran Ivan Salaverry – post-fight drug testing controversy led to Marquardt's suspension by the Nevada State Athletic Commission. Marquardt tested positive for high levels of nandrolone, an anabolic steroid, which led the commission to file for his suspension. Marquardt maintains that he only used over-the-counter supplements in preparation for his fight.

Common way of getting legal testosterone replacement for wrestlers is to get tested when they're off their cycle so their testosterone is at it's lowest.

Almost everyone in MMA is on something. Current drug testing which is at weigh ins or day of the fight is basically an IQ test.
