Started watching the first season of Documentary Now! When this is good it's pretty great. Enjoying it a lot as a fan of film/documentaries. Some episodes are definitely less funny than others though.

5 episodes into Jessica Jones S3.  The new villain is really creepy, liking it a lot so far.

its entirely self contained other than an almost pointless luke cage cameo, which seems to show LC is better off as a crime boss than he ever was as 'harlems hero'.

Its really a shame they unceremoniously dumped it, because its pretty damn good

It's Refn-core. Glacial pacing, I'm talking near 15-30 second pause beats between lines. Violent, and a lot of sexual content. I loved it but it's definitely a "how much do you dig this guy's work" kinda thing. Kinda felt like he was taking another shot at some of the stuff he was doing in Only God Forgives and Neon Demon in particular. Like he combined the themes and ideas of those two and stretched it over 16 hours.

Refns show is an absolutely wonderful fever dream when watched high as fuck. It can be a slog but then it fixates on something, with the swelling synths, evocative imagery, these coelescing of elements heightens EVERYTHING in a spooky way.l I've never really experienced. It's just too bad you have to slog through some of the more drawn out scenes.

It's really really auteur stuff. I'd say give it a go but way scenes are played out I would understand if you punched out. The world gets weirder as it goes on so I'd say it's worth investing into if you dig the vibe.

Watching the Refyn show and is ep3 really directed by him? Went from two eps of everyone talking like they’re in slow motion with 10 second pauses between words, to suddenly standard tv dialogue and pacing in ep3 wtf?

Only God Forgives had parts like that too (the mother), and they felt very out of place there as well.

It gets better once they stop pretending to be in America (pretty much everything after season 1). Stops trying to be some weird western thing and pretty much goes full post apocalyptic kung-fu shit.

The more i think about the Deadwood movie, the more i'm puzzled by its existence.
I loved it as a fan service type of thing, but did it really add anything to any of the characters' stories? there was no real development for anyone, aside from the implicit passage of time, given the 10+ years. It felt more like they just came back to
major spoiler
kill Charlie and Al.
[close]

It still made me emotional, and i'd still be happy to spend another 4 seasons in that world, though.
Just odd to consider it a "finale", felt more like a "let's check back in for an hour and a half".

Not sure what else you expected even as arcs goes. Everyone ends up pretty much where you expect, maybe with a little luck sprinkled over some of them. Show is part historical so there's not much they could do about the big antagonist they built up in s3 but they did a good job of wrapping the bigger stuff up.  Drunks are still drunk, stubborn assholes are still stubborn assholes. It was nice to say hello again, and goodbye.

Jessica Jones season 3 was fantastic.

spoiler (click to show/hide)
Got Angel vibes from the ending. "The work is never done" basically. This season is pretty much where I expected Trish to go after the s2 finale, and I'm glad they set everything up so that her gradual descent makes sense at any given time. Trish this season was the "real" big bad, like Dark Willow in Buffy season 6. Really enjoyed everything.
[close]

DD and JJ basically followed the same path: amazing first season, pretty good second season that maybe repeated or echoed the first season too much, and a thrilling and intense third season finale.

I will love and cherish and be rewatching both shows for years to come.

Yeah it's weird and once production change to more of a UK-Ireland/ China co-production (iirc) they drop it almost completely. Season two is basically them throwing most of the western stuff away from a story pt of view.

I used to watch this Chinese-produced serial back in the early 90's, I think it was literally called Shaolin Monks. It probably sucks without nostalgia goggles, but that's what it initially reminded me of, visually.

Ok, made it through 4 eps of Too Old To Die Young so far and this is kinda terrible with moments of genius but can’t stop watching.

Refn with an editor reigning him in would be amazing.

To be honest, it just kinda feels like one of the weaker Lynch films so far.

Historical context is surealy limiting what Milch could do, and it's not like i was expecting them to do crazy things in that sense, but the more i think about each character's "epilogue", the more i feel like, it's exactly what they had established in the last season already.
As i said it felt more like a "check in" with the characters, more than a vital puzzle piece that was missing from the plot.

Which is alright, as i said it still made me emotional to be there again.

If you compare it to something like Twin Peaks (either FWWM or season 3), it's much more conservatively adding to what we already had.

Ep5 of Too Old to Die Young - Well, that was a thing.
Sometimes I can't tell if this whole thing is a troll. The radio sequence in the car was  :clap

This show is the Twin Peaks S3 of 2019. Everyone should watch it, but it's not actually good, but it's more interesting than most other things on TV so it's worth watching for the experience.

Ep2 with the Cartel was the best ep in the first half by a long shot. Even if it was an hour and forty minutes long.

Yeah, I'm not really a fan and feel like he just got lucky with Drive (especially the soundtrack being an amazing mix of artists). The Cliff Martinez soundtrack is excellent in the new show though, dude is always on point. I think Refn has very good cinematography and style. Beautiful shots. But I don't think he knows how to make a good movie out of them. He'd be much better as a music video director.

My impression of Refn as not a fan is it seems like in Refn's head he is Lynch x Tarantino (and maybe x Jesus in just how indulgent his stuff is) but he's not really anywhere near as good as either of those two. I am ok watching his stuff though because it's at least trying to do something ambitious and interesting even if I think it generally fails.

They all dropped at once on Amazon Prime Video.
