Just when I start thinking that TV is starting to suck and I havn't seen anything good in a while, The Queen's Gambit on Netflix is really good.

Watching Amazon's HANNA. This is really fucking cool. I loved the movie, but I really like Joel Kinnaman and the woman in the deuteragonist role is very good.

I would stop at season 3 because the movie and season 4 are bad

 :bolo

I really liked the movie. Logan goes from the most hated villain of s1 to tragic hero in s3 and cements it in the movie. He's the Racer X/Green Ranger of the series. I'm advising other fans to stop with the movie. S4 is good but atonal to s1~3.

Finished watching Euphoria. Finale was ok, not one of the stronger episodes. Could've wrapped up more.

I think the highs of this show are A++, lots of great touching character stuff.
The lows were like angsty teen drama.

Levinson's is a great scene dialogue writer & real good director with fantastic style & music choices. Rue's monologue's are fucking poetic. The actresses also range but a lot are excellent as are the guys.

Otoh, I don't think Levinson's a great plot writer/storyteller and falls on too many teen drama cliches. I read an interview after the finale and he says he doesn't outline because he gets bored so he just takes it as it goes, which can be good & bad. Good in that it makes the character interactions feel more memorable, but bad in that the narrative backbone isn't that strong.

Still, liked it a lot and I will be there day 1 for the specials and S2 whenever they can film it.

Also ain't gonna front, Sydney Sweeney is insanely attractive in this :whew

Anyone seen Gomorrah?

I started it up after HBO added it recently since I’ve seen pretty much everything else I’ve wanted from this year.

Basically, I’m pretty impressed so far but I’m worried there will be a steep drop off coming. I’m up to nearly the end of the first season so far.

Omggggg you cannot just drop that on me lmao. What are your thoughts on the show so far?? Seasons? Characters? Any fave moments?

Clearly you seem to like it if you made it through six seasons, or at least I hope so. :)

For me personally, season 5 was the tops, and 6 and 7 don't quite measure up but they're still solid. Season 7 is pretty messy but it stuck the landing IMO.

If you're interested, there exists canonical comics for "Seasons" 8, 9, 10, 11, and 12 that continue the story after the show. Also a rollercoaster of quality but still a lot of fun.

Unfortunately that was originally meant to be played straight -- while the original novel Twilight was released in 2005, I'm pretty sure the writers were unaware of it or it wasn't as big a hit until the 2008 movie (one year after Season 8 was written.)

IMO it's more of a weird coincidence. I wonder if any of the writers got interviewed about this, hold on...

Edit- Via an unsourced random Wikia:

Quote
Buffy's writer Joss Whedon confirmed he came up with the characters name before he heard of the Twilight Saga.

Yes, because of some metoo stuff. (dunno how serious, tbh i didn't look into it much).

https://screenrant.com/expanse-season-6-cas-anvar-not-returning/

EDIT: Quick look, it seems to be a bunch of failed attempts of getting in some nerd-fans pants, as well as him bothering some production people with the same shit.
He types like an abolute idiot in those DMs, if i'm being honest.
A couple of accounts seem a bit of a stretch bandwagoning (he touched my neck while we were taking a photo!) But in most of the screenshots they did show, he does indeed come off as a desperate sleezeball, and i can see him being a pain in the ass on set, for that reason (if you're constantly being hit on by this guy).
But again, it was a quick look, and they had a 3rd party investigation anyhow.  :yeshrug

It hit a lot of the same story beats, but not necessarily in the same order or with the same people involved, and skipped some stuff and added some new stuff.

They dial down what a scumbag piece of shit Cassidy is quite a lot in the TV show, for example, but all of the Hitler stuff was a new addition.

At cormacaroni's suggestion, I am watching Ted Lasso on AppleTV+
It's well-edited, well-shot, and charming. I also laughed aloud several times.

Haven't yet started Ted Lasso, but I just finished Long Way Up and enjoyed it a fair bit, maybe even more than the previous two series.  The captured visuals were fantastic, and it probably helps that using electric bikes kind of forced Charlie and Ewan to set aside time to take more detours to interesting people and places.

We watched Julia Davis comedy Sally4Ever. I don't think she should be allowed to make tv shows. Nobody needs to see a woman giving a guy a blowjob while he shits on her in front of his wife and child, or Sean Bean and beds full of puke and shit. It's upsetting.

Utopia (UK) was top notch, loved the colour palette too and kind of disappointed there won't be a third season.

Don't think I'll bother with the Amazon/US adaption.

The US version is - at best - superfluous, and if you need more discincentive is cancelled anwyay, so its a one season and done with things that will never be resolved.

Got around to the Euphora special. Was nice. Some good acting chops and the dialogue in this show during monologues feels kinda good Sorkin-ish.

I do hope Covid doesn't fuck this show. That they were a week away from shooting S2 when it got shut down and who knows when it'll get restarted sucks for a new show that has a lot of stuff going for it.

Looking forward to the second special.

Finally getting around to Locke and Key. It's surprisingly suspenseful -- and dark -- for what feels like should be a YA novel.

The comic is really good (its written by Stephen Kings kid) but I skipped the adaptation because of its YA vibes, and the lack of hype meaning it might be another of those Netflix never-finishers

Yeah, I looked into that as well. It strikes me as funny that Stephen King’s son, if asked about his heritage, would claim he “is only joking.“

The story all very much feels like Harry Potter as written by Stephen King.

Hmmmmmmmm, maybe this YA-fied show version?

I didn't watch the show, but the comic is super grim dark edgy. I liked it but it definitely was borderline too edgy Mark Miller-ish for me. I've read a few things from Joe Hill and I'm not a fan of his writing style. I thought Horns was kind of fun/interesting, but mostly the movie because Daniel Radcliff rocks.

I remember when S1 came out people were pretty down on this coming from the books as an adaptation. It looks big budget and I like the cast, but that killed any interest. Haven't heard anything about S2 at all.

I quite liked season 2. I read the first two books when they came out but only sort of half remember the big plot points, so idk if they are doing a good job at adapting it, but its been consistently entertaining imo. The low point probably being in season 1 where the different plot lines took a bit to cohere into one story. also given that the anti-religious sentiments of the series becomes much more blatant in S2 it is a show that benefits tremendously from watching on a streaming site with a comment section:

Been watching Alice in Bordeland and Sweet Home.

Former is really fun, if you like that high concept sci fi style Manga (think Death Note, Gantz etc) and it's well thought out in that context.
You get your usual overacting and drama, but the pace is incredible and it's well thought out in that sense.

Latter is a Korean show with a structure similar to Rec, people locked in a building with zombies.
It's kind of mediocre and also filled with Asian melodrama, but of much lower quality than Alice.
the monsters are kind of creative though, and not just regular zombies, and that kind of makes it worth a watch.

Both on Netflix.

Alice is a must watch so far (only 3 or 4 episodes in) Sweet Home is take it or leave it.

I tried getting into this show (was on episode 3 or 4) and it *is* shot incredibly well with good acting, but I couldn’t shake the feeling that it was Degrassi with higher production. I can’t suspend my belief for long enough to believe that *everyone* is going through some controversial, modern-day shit.
