Finished S2 of the Expanse. I went back to being lukewarm about the conspiracy stuff, not for any fault of the plot itself (it was fun to see the bad guy ruthlessly turning tables on everyone, even) but because I have a general dislike for it and it's always jarring when mixed with decent political intrigue, convenient to the point of laziness.

Quote
The Martian Army Chaplain stuff was weak, like having a demo reel of the super illegal super soldier on his mobile phone ? That cabal can mobilize an high tech ship, charter military vessels, and wreck a major source of food just for the sake of a test, but somehow random Lieutenant guy is privy to the most sensitive details ?

Otherwise uneven effects but not too distracting, uneven acting (especially the bit parts), cool new characters, excellent place to the narrative even if there's diggling bits

spoiler (click to show/hide)
The Martian Marine squad part didn't mesh well with the rest. Felt way too long for just introducing one character, perhaps. The romance bit came off a bit bizarre because of the format, they start being estranged the minute they finally become an item. I suppose the honeymoon bit is to be inferred.

That's right, Nate. I lost all my irl friends a couple of years ago when I became a mild alcoholic, dropped out of college, lost my job, my girlfriend, and then almost died in a drunk driving accident. Then I moved back in with my folks and spent the next six months trying to manage my severely mentally ill father and barely left the house. Then he got worse and I moved to a city where I had no friends and got a dead end job where I can't make any friends because everyone is too old, too young, or the kind of washed out loser that doesn't make friends with anyone. So yeah, I haven't had a single friend in about two years, not because I can't, but because my life is like being duct-taped face first into a dark corner of a room with cobwebs. You feel good rubbing it in?

Elementary renewed for a seventh and probably final season. :heart

broadcast procedural nerd splerging warning:
Hope that and all the hints this season means Moriarty is guaranteed as The Big Bad, since they were apparently killed off on Game of Thrones years ago now and that's why they couldn't come back before except for a single awesome episode.

Still was one of the most unexpected and epic reveals* for a weekly broadcast procedural. :lawd And that showdown with Joan. :whew Never been able to come close to topping or even matching that plotline. Even the little segment this season where Sherlock visits one of the fronts was one of the best scenes of the season.

Plus if it definitely is the final season (everything is suggesting it is) they won't easily be able to grind Moriarty down into a non-epic version. Like they did with Morland and Mycroft and Shinwell and Kitty and... Thankfully they have managed to avoid this with Michael so far by sending him away from the show for more than half the season. :lol

*Actual spoils cuz dat shit still makes me hot all these years later:
spoiler (click to show/hide)
Not that Moriarty was gender swapped like Watson was. That alone would have been lame. But that they went ahead and made it so she was also Irene. (Which actually reverses the traditional trope usage of her to the original version of Irene Adler as someone who successfully tricks and deceives Sherlock then "isn't seen again" and not as a regular love interest.) And how after the reveal, Moriarty was played with instantaneous persona changes towards her targets/followers/etc. (The Joan showdown being a prominent example when she realizes Joan already knows who she is and so immediately switches from girlfriend to homicidal monster criminal mode.) And how when Sherlock ultimately asks her "how? why?" she basically tells him a serial killer version of: "Remember, Jerry Sherlock, it's not a lie if you believe it." *shivers*
[close]

This version of Moriarty, especially along with these versions of Sherlock and Watson, plus the Bell character, are why I eventually decided I prefer this, despite it being a broadcast procedural to Sherlock and was really pretty bored with the last two series of that. Probably helps that if the case of the episode sucks it's not 90 minutes long and they will still have funs in scenes. Whereas the latter started to get more interested in moping about mental illnesses and way too into chasing that "high functioning sociopath" nonsense that everyone seemed to love. Elementary kinda realized it should lean into the nonsense that Sherlock gets up to in the course of solving cases, and wink about it. A lot of the cold opens they do some goofy thing where Sherlock is doing something nonsense to solve some other case he was hired for and then he gets the call for the case of the week. Replacing the moping with that kind of stuff, and having him be a real addict who does actual rehab and improves, was way more beneficial character wise imo.

One of the best instances of that lean into the characters Elementary did was when they finally had the Detective Bell character mention something obscure about some animals the case-of-the-week takes them to and Sherlock is all stunned and goes "I didn't know you had an interest in [whatever]" and Bell goes "nah, you're not the only one who can use Wikipedia on your phone before showing up." :dead Since then they've made him (and the Captain) much more of an equal to Sherlock and Joan, albeit restricted by being the lawman. I prefer that direction to the whole "they resent/distrust Sherlock still" that most of these shows and their alikes (Psych is another example) usually try to keep up.

I don't think I've ever done that with a show I deliberately started watching.

I think I must have an extraordinarily high tolerance when it comes to TV shows, comics, books, maybe even games...

I've seen up to S3 or S4 (I miss two seasons IIRC) and it's great throughout if you have a nook for spy thrillers. It does get a tad ludicrous at points but that's a bit of necessary evil to keep the drama contained with our leads. It's much more of a character piece than action (it never get much more crazy than the pilot really, undercover oblige) but the writing has been consistently excellent for me. It was a bit of a fluff piece but the New Yorker had one of the translators of the show saying they tried to have period accurate vocabulary for the Soviet characters. As you probably saw for yourself it's all made with great care and taste.

Started the latest BBC miniseries of War and Peace. It's lavish but still falls short of the book and the grandiosity (be it in balls or battles). Then again nothing will ever love to that except maybe that 10+ hours Soviet film with tens of thousands extras. So far it's adequate (except for the overt incest subplot) and I can't fault them for the shortcuts taken but it's a shame to see so many memorable scenes reduced to a nod (the window ledge bet, the dogged defence by a small detachment of cannons, and that's just for episode one.). Still feels a bit glossy and vapid so far. Stephen Rea makes for an excellent Prince Vassily however. No slight to Paul Dani but he's still a bit green to play Bezukhov and he lacks the physical presence.

I didn't know the Jack Ryan thing existed but it sounds like something I'd like.

I actually liked pretty much all of the movies with the character Jack Ryan (including Sum of all Fears and Jack Ryan: Shadow Recruit) but I suppose it won't reach 'Hunt for Red October' heights.  :doge

Anyway, finished the Vietnam Ken Burns thing. Jesus christ, what a needless mess that war was.

got around to watching sacred games, this is really good. i went in with very low expectations since the little exposure to indian tv i have hasn't impressed me but the cast and acting is solid, the characters actually behave and talk in a believable manner and the story is good, especially the "past" stuff.

Maybe it was the weed or the 60FPS flow motion bullshit on the friends' TV I was watching it on, but Always Sunny really missed the mark for me last night. I know the group dynamic feeling weird was basically the whole plot, but there's still something else that feels off about this episode... Lack of music? Some stilted deliveries? A couple out of place awkward pauses? It's hard for me to really sum it up. It also kinda took until the second half for there to be much energy.

Still have high hopes for this season. Speaking of the actors' ages, Mac and Devito look like hell (which is something you could say about the latter in later seasons, but now the white is really creeping in.) And Mac trading his babyface for muscles was probably an easy choice for McElhenney and his character, but damn, he looks 15-20 years older than the previous episode.

Dee and Charlie look angelic as always. The Waitress has looked much better but she's also looked much much worse, so I'm not super worried about those three.
