It gets a bit CWy at the end.

Thats too bad. I notice these recent Netflix shows sort of unravel into something I may not care for. A strong first showing that cant be sustained.

TBF it started as a CW show and a river dale spin off at that, so its not unexpected.

Castlevania (S1)

Started watching this, had no idea it would be this violent. Plus the monster designs are fantastic. Trevor Belmont is a great character too.

Trevor: Tell it to your floating vampire Jesus here (referring to Alucard)

Finished Castle Rock. That ending was fucking bogus. The show had great cinematography, performances, pretty solid direction but the pacing was slow and as it got further and further along it kept being clearer that it's all nonsense and the show is only going to work if the conclusion pulls it off because every ep is mysteries without explanations. Then the final ep almost pulls it off and then the ending is fucking bullshit. Like you can leave some stuff ambiguous and not spoon feed the story, but then there's the other side where at the end no one who watched it really has any idea what the story of the show was about. Which is lame. That JJ Abrams influence.

I'm out for S2 because I don't trust them to not do this again with the writing the whole season.

Ok, I'm watching Curb Season 9, and I'm wondering... what show is this? Was the camera always this shakey? And Larry's mean without there being serious comedy behind it. This reboot seems forced.

Edit: ok the episode picked up by the end. Loved it :lol

I watched Homecoming on Amazon yesterday. It was p. good, Julia Roberts were great, Bobby Cannavale was sleazy af, they did some fun stuff with the frame (4:3 when Julia Roberts didn't have her memories, 16:9 when she did) but

spoiler (click to show/hide)
it seemed too low stakes. There were a lot of lies, conspiracies, cover-ups, and backstabbing, but Heidi and the DoD guy were never in any personal danger. It seemed like for sure that Geist drugged Heidi to keep her from telling what she knew, but then it even turned out that Heidi drugged herself. The most physical danger anyone was in was when Heidi pushed Colin into the fountain and he cut his head. I'm sure that will change in Season 2, now that we know Geist has their hooks in the DoD (least surprising twist ever) and they've continued to expand testing and usage of the drug after Homecoming was shut down. Colin was expendable, but you have to expect things change when Mr. Geist comes into the mix.

I really liked Sabrina, despite some rather inconsistent pacing and world building. The hair played a very large part in me being unable to see Kieran as anyone but Sally Draper a lot of the time, but the rest of the cast was pretty solid and they have a nice platform built for S2. Episode 5 was totally filler but was also satisfyingly bonkers.

Goddamnit Sunny. I cried last night. I didn't expect to cry for you.

Its been a shit season but that whole sequence almost made up for it.
It was nowhere near as relevant or important but there were other parts of this season that I thought expressed a new maturity of sorts existing around the show which internally can only get worse. Like, I thought the ending with the montage and then actual footage for the Eagles Super Bowl episode was incredibly well done in expressing the passion and desperate fandom and why it mattered after an hour of hijinks over the two episodes. Frank's speech was a little too on the nose though, and the whole thing suffered from others filling Dennis roles. But it was like a series finale type climax by actually doing "the city and the characters being saved by the Eagles victory nonsense without having to ever show us" and then the real shot of Rob going "THEY DID IT! THEY DID IT!" in as much disbelief as joy.

As for this episode, I did like how they continued the series long increasingly not subtle subplot of how they know every fringe and absurd type of gay lingo with insane theories behind it, even Frank was doing it at the same time as he was claiming not to get any of it. Also, yet again how they all construct elaborate metaphors for their childhood traumas AND design elaborately stupid presentations as the only way to truly express their emotions like also with the High School Reunion and Nightman Play.

House of Cards is a lovely trainwreck 2 episodes in. Even better than stro advertised.

The dialogue gets to True Detective Season 2 levels of bad.

The oligarch woman that Claire meets with is hilariously bad in her role. It's like watching a badly acted Disney movie villain.
Also, Mark is just openly sleaze bagging his way through the first two episodes without shame.

The moment real Jim Acosta talked in a panel on fake CNN  :heh

Also notice how everyone knows everything because it somehow 'leaks'. Events that just happened or were spontaneously set-up.
Apparently if you have money you have your own secret service guys digging up the graves of former presidents. YES IT IS THAT BAD.

Robin Wright seems to be the only person that actually tries to make it work but even she had to realize how comically stupid this entire thing is.
I don't know what if any input Spacey had on the writing. But I doubt he would've handled this the same way.

HOC used to have these smoldering fires, where you weren't sure what was going to surface and impact the story and what didn't.
Small events could turn into big plot points while seemingly big events could throw you off. Season 6 is pretty much all "wink wink, nudge nudge" giving away everthing in the first 2 eps.

Daredevil Season 3 (2018)

:leon

The best of any of the Marvel Netflix shows, easily. Essentially said fuck season 2 and The Defenders, went back to what made people :gladbron at season 1 and made it better. This is the first Netflix Marvel show that doesn't fall into a lull or off a cliff at the half way point, and the first season of any of them that didn't feel like 8-10 hours of story stretched to 13 hours of content.

EVERY god damn character having a tragic childhood or backstory is, for lack of a better work, comical, but what can ya do. I think Foggy might be the only recurring character that doesn't have some terrible thing that happened to him prior to the events of the show.

You mean Karen? It always made sense to me she had some kind of big trauma considering she pretty easily dispatched Kingpin's right hand man in s1. And her reasons for hiding it made sense to me too.

You could also say it's more likely for people with traumatic experiences to become close friends.

Bates Motel has way too many sub-plots that have nothing to do with Norman or Norma, and almost all of them only exist because the sheriff is written in such a way that enables it all. Like....why is a modern day prequel to Psycho dealing so much with a drug war in a small town in Oregon?

You have to suffer with that in the first two seasons. There’s enough good stuff to keep it worthwhile.

Lackeys of lobbyists can barge in on meetings between the US and Russian president and spy on everyone and update their boss in real time over the phone.

Even though 90% of the cast is not knowing what the fuck they are doing Robin Wright's acting stays on point despite the abysmal material she has to work with.

It is bad, yet also strangely compelling.  :doge

Girlfriend got me into Psych.  I'm on season six now.  Whenever I think that the show is no longer hitting its stride, there's something that cracks me up.  I might be jinxing it but they have the dumb romance thing (rarely is a show better for doing it) but they minimize it, as if they know they have to do the "will they, won't they" routine but still realize there's a show to do.

Finished House of Cards Season 6.

I must admit towards the end it got pretty tense but...

spoiler (click to show/hide)
Claire just offs everyone. I mean, it wasn't even subtle. She just kills one key witness/character an episode and threatens she'll do the same to other people. All plots and threats closed.
The only person she's on the level with is the Russian President because he's quite as ruthless as she is. Plus people who don't dare to go against her.

So if Season 7 ever happens these people are left:
- Skorski (or whatever):  Stuck in the same place as Tom and Lucas were for 5 seasons. Knows the truth, doesn't have the evidence.
- Mark: Chickened out at the last minute but might be out for good and the only one to survive (for now) unless he's also convicted as a plotter (doubtful because he still has the Yates body)
- Bill Shepherd: Basically dead
- Anette Shepherd: To be jailed for planning the assassination
- Nathan Green: In on the plot against Claire. Probably dead next season (if it happens)
- Doug's shrink: A non-character but Claire would have no trouble killing him
- Victor Petrov: Knows some bad shit they pulled but no one believes him
- Duncan Shepherd: In jail, probably for the rest of his life if fake-mommy goes down
- Seth Grayson: Worked for the Shepherds, still thought Doug was his 'friend' dumbfuck
- Miliitary(?): Most are probably implicated in the assassination given it was supposed to be done by the nuclear football carrier
- Congressman Cole: Now Claire's little bitch

This show went from slow plotting, political deliberations and backdoor scheming to feminist Michael Corleone in a single season

AHS Apocalypse might be tied with Coven for my second-fave season. Incredibly well paced (possibly the best of any season), constant twists that were actually both foreshadowed and followed up on, and an amazing crossover with incredible stakes paying off at least three previous seasons' storylines. I don't know how they'll top this next year honestly, unless they go "back to basics" or something.

Or do a season in space.

Sad about no Gaga cameo tho. But at least we got Lange back for two eps, and McDermott too.
