Jack Ryan got me on he espionage kick so I started watching Berlin Station.

Dig it.
I laughed at the SQL query talk during ep 1 of Jack Ryan, but it was a good show. Berlin Station was good too but I doubt many people would follow such a very British production.

Yous see this yet?

Dark Crystal Netflix :leon
It's too bad the main elves or whatever are hideous (but not in a good way like the other creatures) and the main main guy is the biggest bitch of them all. Every other visual though :lawd It was a little dumb when it went too much GoT at one point, but overall it was told well enough too.

I liked Maniac a lot but it sort of fizzles out in the second half. I like the ending nonetheless.

It needed to maintain that initial biting tone throughout the run. With that said, adore Fukunagas style so much.

Ozark is so good. Finished with S2. I think in the second season it sort of gets away from its strengths at times and makes poor narrative choices, but overall it's finding its voice. The finale was bone chilling.
Closest thing to Breaking Bad, in terms of mood and pace, that i've found.
Not quite as good, but good enough.

Not quite as good, but good enough.
It falls short when you directly compare them. But in S2 they added some House of Cards to the mix and that was a winning formula.
Yeah, i like these breakneck paced shows, it's why i liked Sneaky Pete as well (though that's more light hearted, and it had Bryan Cranston as a bad guy) even if it means conceding some pretty big logical fallacies here and there.
But they share in the basic structure of a clever main protagonist caught between a rock and a hard place, making promises to A to pay B, and taking money from B to pay back A.

Ozark in particular has fun with the wife character, who for once isn't used as the nagging moral compass shielded from the horrors, but it's in on the action. It makes for a refreshing duo dynamic, despite the rocky marriage.

The Righteous Gemstones is really good altogether but the misbehaving song with Walton Goggins is about as a perfect moment as you could expect from a tv show.

Riotus, speaking of spy TV shows, have you seen Little Drummer Girl? It's directed by Park Chan-wook (Oldboy, Handmaiden etc) based on Le Carrè's novel, and it's just 6 episodes.
I'm only 1 episode in, but looks very solid so far, great cinematography as expected.

There's a good cast too (Michael Shannon, Florence Pugh, Stellan Skarsgard).

Finished off Righteous Gemstones and that was a fun season.

Also watched Mr Robot final season episode 2 and this show just keeps getting darker and more depressing. And more WTF. Really curious to see if they nail the ending.

The Righteous Gemstones is really good altogether but the misbehaving song with Walton Goggins is about as a perfect moment as you could expect from a tv show.

Uncle Baby Billy Freeman might now be my second favorite Walton Goggins role after Boyd Crowder.

Creepshow 2019 is so good halfway in. Feels straight out of the 80s & 90s comic horror camp. I’m sad it’s only 12 eps because I don’t want this to end. Hopefully they do a few seasons.

The Blacklist continues to be a fun background binge watch. One of the better action oriented binges. Watching Agent Ressler obliterate a lawn gnome with a kick out of frustration was one of the funniest scenes I've seen on TV. Also no one should have as much on screen charisma as James Spader.

Hah; put S1E1 on about 30 minutes ago.

Guess Netflix decided to recommend it.

Itches that almost mindless procedural itch but keeps a strong thread going that connects everything. Seems to not take itself seriously at times too which is great, cuts through the dourness. That's all on Spader.

The Affair almost done (second to last ep. aired yesterday).
I'd really like to ask the writers what their mental process was, to have such well written and interesting duo of main characters, and constantly insert them in this soap opera level drama bullshit, for no reason at all.
If they had made a season 6, i'd expect them to have an alien invasion.

I started it recently and it was okay. Never too hilarious, but overall engaging. Stopped halfway through 5 for now, since the humour and the way it tries to be melancholic becomes repetitive and wears thin after a while. I like how you can spot when Trump was elected, because it starts to preach at a certain point.  :doge

Netflix' Daybreak is a quasi-YA mishmash of Ferris Bueller's Day Off and The Walking Dead and/or Mad Max: Beyond Thunderdome.

It's not great. I enjoy the fact that Matthew Broderick is on board for this tribute to his 2nd best film, and I like the 4th wall breaking narrative in this context — but there is far too much telegraphing and not enough gonzo (I prefer Savage Steve Holland's 3 O'Clock High's style).

I'll watch any old scifi shit that gets broadcast, so I'm going to recommend the critically panned Another Life on netflix as a really great hatewatch.

Because it's not a scifi show. Its a low budget teen horror flick, where its a bunch of stupid self-obsessed millenial arseholes acting like dicks, and then being killed off one by one.

Its glorious :lawd

  • It doesn't know wtf it wants to be, so half the show is an Arrival knock off with scientists on earth trying to figure shit out and the other half is a BSG reboot knock off with a crew in space potentially representing whats left of humanity all alone and out for vengeance
  • It has a pretty great conceit, that it has a ton of backup characters in stasis, so whenever their computer guy (or whatever) gets red-shirted, they just defrost a new one :lol
  • It makes a super strong case that we should probably let the military handle shit like deep space expeditions, and not just a bunch of random fucking millenials who wanted to live their best life and do the most stupid shit you can imagine

Liking the Ducktales reboot, dig the visuals + humour, but there are some absolute :snore episodes peppered throughout S1. Of course, usually the ones excluding Scrooge and the boys.

Really enjoyed Black Spot off Netflix, I'm hoping there's an S3 as I've read S2 didn't get any good numbers in France.
