There's a difference between being entertained and worship. I thought Solo and Great Rumbler were pretty reasonable with their responses on why they like the movie, see anything Green Shinobi writes for what is gag-inducing.

I also expect critics to know better. Don't tell me that Avatar is a shallow, spectacle-driven enterprise of pure 3D magick and give it your highest score (or award nominations, no less). There's nothing wrong with recommending a film on spectacle alone, but then there is a line you cross when you give it a pass just for eye candy. You almost legitimize it as a great film, which is something even I haven't even done with various pop films that I have enjoyed (Zombieland, Paranormal Activity, etc.) due to the venue or their style.

... And I have no desire to see a film that is by all accounts, even from its most enthusiastic supporters, a retread of various cliches and features a disposable story. I'm not a big enough fan of the art style or Cameron to deal with that.

I went with 5 people to see it last night and even those who didn't really care for it all that much admitted that it was well worth seeing [at $15].

I don't get that. They didn't care for it, but admitted it's worth spending $15 to see? Doesn't that mean, more likely, that they did like it?

I'm at a point in my life that I simply do not pay money to see something that I have no interest in seeing. If the concept of colorful, Crayola-inspired worlds filled with furries and rehashed mech designs got me excited, I probably would.

But it doesn't.

The fact that the story is dispensable by most people's standards, even its fans, and is largely a retread of about fifty other films I have already seen, pretty much seals the deal. I've seen many digital 3D films, so I don't really need a tech demo.

I never said I didn't care about the production. I even believe I stipulated the reasons why I do. That doesn't mean I want to see it or have any desire to. People can talk about entertainment they haven't seen, especially when it is industry relevant.

... Not to mention, outside of just trolling Glen Shinobi, nobody has criticized Cameron's flick for being anything other than what its fans even say it is - a 3D spectacle with one-dimensional characters.

Last time Cameron made a movie, I talked unrelenting smack about it without having seen it.  It had a lot of fans who were emotionally invested in the film and sometimes took this personally.  They were all pretty vehement about me having to watch the thing.

Having rented it on video later, I think I was vindicated.

Well one thing about it is that it is the best 3D I've ever seen and I've seen a ton of IMAX 3D and digital 3D movies. Most 3D has a weird shimmering effect, the Shrek 3D trailer before Avatar showed it. But Avatar is completely clear in 3D. I sat dead center in the theater and had non of the blurriness that some people complain about. The 3D was perfect, but you've seen this same story told a million times before.

I think at this point we can talk about where this ranks in the Cameron library. For me, it's:

1) Aliens
2) Terminator 2/Avatar tied

 :-X

I wanted to avoid this thread until I had seen the movie, so I went this afternoon. What a fucking joke. I had no idea that this was going to be a kids movie. The characters were sooooooo simplified to their traditional archetypes/tropes and every plot point was predictable from a mile away

spoiler (click to show/hide)
-"watch out for this huge flying monster. He's really big and scary, but my grandfather was able to fly it and its only happened four times and whenever the monster picks a rider all of the tribes are united, etc." :eyeroll

-Same goes for the body transfer via spirit tree

-Not even going to get into the end fight with the villain  :-\ , suffice it to say its a three part bossfight ala Nintendo
[close]

It was a good movie for kids, as everything was laid out in front of the viewer with no subtlety whatsoever, I just wish that they were selling it as such. It was not a good film when compared to its contemporaries (i.e. The Last Samurai, Dancing with Wolves, etc.) and it was obvious that Cameron was trying to make a film appealing to the masses.

I dont get why simple = bad in so many people's minds. Another thing that is starting to grate is the incessant unoriginality criticisms. This movie is getting dragged through the mud for being Pocahontas/Dances with Wolves/Last Samurai in space, and while thats true, why are the other 100 derivative blockbusters released yearly given a free pass?

Pirates of the Caribbean 2 is nothing more than a bloated, inferior Empire Strikes Back, but no one is bringing that up.

Let's look at what the critics are saying, Glen! Keep in mind, these are the positive reviews:

Quote from: USA Today
For all the grandeur and technical virtuosity of the mythical 3-D universe Cameron labored for years to perfect, his characters are one-dimensional, rarely saying anything unexpected. But for much of the movie, that hardly matters.

Quote from: New York Daily News
Along with the eye-popping visuals in writer-director James Cameron's sci-fi epic, there's also a lot of eye-rollingly silly stuff.

Quote from: Los Angeles Times
Perhaps the most surprising thing about Cameron's visual accomplishments is that they are so powerful we're barely troubled by the same weakness for flat dialogue and obvious characterization that put such a dent in "Titanic."

Quote from: The Boston Globe
In terms of plot, then, this is “Dances With Wolves.’’ Seriously: It’s the same movie, re-imagined as a speculative-anthropological freak-out. Because Cameron is a visionary and a perfectionist, though, it’s possible to get lost in his created world, and this is where “Avatar’’ thoroughly lives up to its hype.

Quote from: Associated Press
A movie whose effects are clearly revolutionary, a spectacle that millions will find adventure in. But it nevertheless feels unsatisfying and somehow lacks the pulse of a truly alive film.

Quote from: Entertainment Weekly
As visual spectacle, Avatar is indelible, but as a movie it all but evaporates as you watch it.

Quote from: Arizona Republic
If only Cameron, who also wrote the script, had spent as much time on the story as he did the effects he uses to tell it.

Quote from: The Dallas Morning News
There is Avatar as an unconditionally innovative achievement providing the latest and greatest in 3-D photography and computer-generated imagery: the new. And there is Avatar as an clumsy and cliché-filled drama: the old. The new Avatar gets an A; the old Avatar gets an F (earning its C average).

Quote from: The Houston Chronicle
The most-hyped movie of the year just about merits it. Avatar isn't a perfect film — and a few clichés short of a great one — but at its best, it'll fry your brain.

Quote from: The Washington Post
Is the dialogue corny? You bet. Does the movie go kerblooey in its final moments, during a ferocious, explosive firefight that will leave your eyeballs bleeding? Uh-huh. But Cameron has delivered what he promised with "Avatar": an ambitious, fully immersive cinematic experience.

Sounds like Best Picture to me! ::)

Quote from: Solo
This movie is getting dragged through the mud for being Pocahontas/Dances with Wolves/Last Samurai in space, and while thats true, why are the other 100 derivative blockbusters released yearly given a free pass?

They don't. The amount of hyperbole heaped on this film is ridiculous, as evident by the positive reviews listed above! It's amazing!*

I'm not fan or reading reviews' text of movies, but is it unusual for critics to unanimously point out any shortcomings in a generally well received movie?

There was bound to be flaws, ones that more than a critic would notice, but still doesn't affect the final judgment since they're being outweighed by the positives.

I don't think any film is perfect, but I would say when the film is consistently cited for its poor screenplay, that is a pretty significant flaw - especially when you're talking about the film in context of BEST PICTURE OF THE YEAR.

Or is this just a reaction for the Golden Globes' nominations (the award show you previously dismissed)?

I probably wouldn't care about the Globes nominations if I wasn't so sure they were likely to translate into Oscar nominations. Although, that is probably for the best - we might as well throw away any legitimacy they might have had.

And by the way, even Terminator 2 and Aliens, which were very well reviewed, never made it on any significant all-time lists (other than the AFI list for Top 10 science-fiction films) or serious awards consideration. Because critics were able to separate what constitutes as good pop entertainment or good science-fiction from classic cinema. Internet geeks cannot. It's sad that those sensibilities are transferring over to the press.

The characters and their motives were actually interesting

Did you see a different cut than me?
So you saw it coming that Keira Knightley was going to leave Jack for dead? And then wanted to rescue him towards the end after feeling regret?

I'm not gonna argue that it was a great film, because I don't think that and its irrelevant, but it was certainly more interesting than Avatar.

We're arguing different things. Im saying that the characters arent interesting, and youre saying the movie was unpredictable. I dont disagree - even the writers didnt know what was going on.
Sounds like LOST :teehee

Yeah, if you remove Shinobi's fanaticism, this thread really is a homoerotic lovefest - personal opinions aside.

Because I know at the end of the day, Solo and I can truly appreciate fine art.*
