I flipped through GA this afternoon, it looked pretty bad. :lol I think everyone's gonna be out of office tomorrow, so I should have time for some funnybooks.

I'm sure it won't be as deliciously awful as the Cry For Justice/Rise and Fall storylines though.

no, those had the added ingredient of massive editorial interference and rewrites I think. (just speculating as the writers don't SEEM utterly insane elsewhere...)

Agreed.  Great art, story is zzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzz.  Still better than that awful pre-new 52 "new" Wonder Woman storyline that went nowhere, but that's not saying much.

Green Arrow - tell us how it is :lol
I never read Green Arrow before the reboot, but they changed Oliver Queen into the young head of a tech company.  He moonlights as a crime fighter and has a few people at his company helping with stuff, kind of like how Oracle used to help Batman.  Nothing is really happening in the book though.  He fights C-list villains and pretends to give a shit about his company.  Kind of feels like they're attempting to rip-off Tony Stark with GA's redesign.

the Midtown discount shelf gods were kind to me today!

Harbinger Trade Paperback.  Still sealed with the copy of Issue 0 in the polybag for $3.50

slightly damaged so it was $10

and this

was 25% off because they're going to have a signing in two weeks.

Comic Book Comics is GREAT. Really loved the issue on all the copyright wrangles. It's infuriating but really helps put all those things in perspective. Van Lente did an ASSLOAD of research.

Speaking of Garth Ennis, I read a bunch of the Jennifer Blood series that he handed over to Al Ewing. The art is HORRID, bottom-drawer, did they actually PAY this guy level shit but Ewing is basically a younger, smarter version of Ennis without the puerility. Good stuff. Ewing is also doing an amazing strip in 2000AD with Brendan McCarthy called The Zaucer of Zilk that's really worth checking out.

i go to midtown because they have a great website telling me what will be in stock and they're right by my job, so it's the easiest place to get to.

Bergen St, because of Brooklyn's weird transport structure would take me about an hour to get to and I'd have to take 3 trains to get there.  Train into Manhattan, train back into South Brooklyn, then another train in Downtown Brooklyn to finally reach Bergen St.

I have a GREAT comic shop near by called Desert Island

http://www.desertislandbrooklyn.com/

Gabe is great and his stock is amazing.  He carries limited edition prints from various indie artists, several of which decorate our walls.

picked this up for $10 yesterday.

An imaginary storyline which wove its way through about 10 issues of World's Finest in the early to mid70s.

It's....strange.  Well obviously it's strange, but it's really strange.  It feels like a balloon to test out how people would react to a reboot w/ younger Bats and Supes and it has that awesome dialogue for teenage characters written by people in their 50s (Bob Haney was 50 when the stories started).  After the introductory story Bat and Supes Jr ride around on a motorbike and get into adventures, each of which feels like a Roger Corman youth film.

I remember those stories.  Wasn't there one where Superman had Superman Jr. locked in a tube that was going to zap his superpowers, then the kid moped around the rest of the comic and got jealous that Batman Jr. was still out crime-fighting on his bicycle?   :lol

Really bizarre that they did this when there was already a Superboy comic at the time (and Batman had Robin).

got Batman Black Glove deluxe book and Frankenstein Agent of SHADE today.

I opted to buy the deluxe editions rather than the omnis because I figure the deluxes will actually be easier to read.  I still need to get the second Teen Titans omnibus, but i'm kind of miffed they completely dropped an issue for some reason

LOVED the Supersons stories.  Madcap is the best way to describe them.  Well intentioned yet horrible "teen" stories.

I didn't really like Frankenstein that much.  It wasn't madcap enough to justify the budget given to SHADE, and the "human" elements of the story were really lacking which surprised the hell out of me as it was written by Jeff Lemire who I LOVE.

They should get like Rick Remender or even better Gerard Way to write it.

I got 3 issues of enjoyment out of it, buying the book from Amazon was cheaper than those 3 issues, so I'm not really mad at it, but I'm just kind of annoyed that it fell apart so quickly and then never tried to be more than "SHIELD meets BRPD."

Secret Wars doesn't (but it never really did.  It was basically Marvel's Crisis on Infinite Earths)
Phoenix / Dark Phoenix kind of does but I don't like Cosmic X-Men stuff personally.
Mutant Massacre / Fall of the Mutants are the two hightpoints in Marvel Crossovers of the 80s, I think

Reading this list is like watching the Singularity spin up into action

Economically Healthy 'Daily Planet' Now Most Unrealistic Part Of Superman Universe
JULY 9, 2012 | ISSUE 48•28

NEW YORK—Frustrated fans of the Superman comic book said Monday the continued financial stability and cultural relevance of the series' Daily Planet newspaper is now the most unrealistic part of its universe and an annoying distraction that has ruined their reading experience.

While they acknowledged that enjoying the adventures of a superhero who can fly, lift a bus over his head, and shoot beams of intense heat from his eyes requires some suspension of disbelief, longtime fans told reporters they simply could not accept a daily metropolitan newspaper still thriving in the media landscape of 2012.

"I can play along with Superman using a steel girder to swat someone into outer space, but I just can't get past the idea that The Daily Planet still occupies one of the largest skyscrapers in all of Metropolis and is totally impervious to newsroom layoffs or dwindling home subscriptions," said comics blogger Marc Daigle, adding that it was impossible for him to even look at Superman's alter ego, Clark Kent, without immediately thinking he would have been replaced long ago by a freelancer who gets paid nine cents a word and receives no health benefits. "Every time The Daily Planet shows up, I just get taken out of the story completely. I usually flip ahead to Superman freezing a volcano with his breath or something."

"I'm not saying The Daily Planet has to be an entirely accurate depiction of a media anachronism that no longer has a single reliable revenue stream," Daigle added. "But, come on, don't insult us."

Other fans said The Daily Planet—which for some strange reason has not been acquired by multimillionaire Lex Luthor with a promise to give readers shorter articles with more sizzle—is so deeply woven into the Superman universe that they had no choice but to avoid the comic altogether. They said even the most exciting stories are routinely marred by absurd depictions of a publication that somehow flourishes in print and whose millions of loyal readers seem oblivious to the idea of getting news online faster and for free.

"I can totally buy into an epic battle in which Superman claps his hands and creates a sonic boom that sends Darkseid flying through 50 buildings," lifelong reader Richard Taft said. "But as soon as people start lining up at newsstands to read about it in The Daily Planet, I think, 'Doesn't anyone have a computer at work? Are there no smartphones?' Before I know it, I'm suddenly aware I'm reading a fictional comic book, and the spell's totally broken."

"The least they could do is have [Daily Planet editor-in-chief] Perry White be forced into retirement by an MBA 25 years his junior," Taft continued. "It'd be a start."

Lou Wadlow, owner of a Boston-area comic-book store, said the outright ridiculousness of The Daily Planet not putting up a pay wall in a futile attempt to remain profitable is causing the popular comic to lose readers, especially younger ones.

"The kids will flip through a copy of Superman, roll their eyes, and put it right back on the rack," Wadlow said. "They're only 9, 10 years old, but they're already drawing the line at a flourishing daily newspaper that is considered an essential news source for absolutely everyone, seems to have no morale issues among its staff, and hasn't lost a dime of ad money to aggregator sites."

"I mean, even Superman could be killed by kryptonite," Wadlow added. "The Daily Planet's indestructible."

I thought it was great, any more would have been gilding the lily really. The plot was simple but elegant. True, there was basically no character work but you could argue that that is the point. Arresting artwork in places too.

I loved that its influences are so embedded into the narrative, and that it takes comics criticism (by the likes of my faves Matt Seneca and the Mindless Ones) as seriously as it does comics of the past like the Invisibles. I was expecting it to be pretentious but I think it came down more on the side of youthful overreaching ambition, in the end...

Reading reviews around the net, and everyone else seems to be raving over WD 100, so I guess I'm just out of step with modern comics or something. I think he's just a mediocre writer who got lucky, overexplains in his dialogue, and can't foreshadow for shit (if you didn't see it coming you weren't paying attention). I've gotten the feeling that he really gets off on excessive brutality a few times before, but it really sank in this time. He just uses over the top shock moment violence to cover his medium talent. I've had enough.

People seem to rave over Crossed, too, as if that isn't just an extended exercise in seeing how much an audience is willing to take. What the fuck is wrong with comics nerds nowadays? Are they all closet sociopaths?
