Try and get hold of a copy of The Long Halloween before you read Dark Victory. DV is a direct sequel to LH, and parts of it are going to leave you feeling a little lost if you haven't read it. The two form a fairly stand alone story that doesn't really require you having extensive knowledge of Batman comics.

I remember some people liking it back then, but I thought Knightfall was straight 90s era inbred fan/collector trash. I think those two Trades collect the entire main storyline from the comics, though.

Batman: The Ressurection of Ra's Al Ghul collects:
Batman #670-671, Robin #168-169, Nightwing #138-139, Detective Comics #838-839

Batman: Long Shadows collects:
Batman comics issues #687-691

Batman: Life After Death collects:
Batman comics issues #692-699

So I guess read those trades in that order.

Arkham City takes place between the two video games. I don't know how much knowledge you need of them before jumping into that.

Batman: Noel is a one-shot self contained story, and Haunted Knight collects three one-shot stories. You can read those (as well as Long Halloween/Dark Victory) in any order, really.

Batman: Noel has some sweet art. That's pretty much it.

Long Shadows and Life After Death both take place right after Batman's "death" and the Battle for the Cowl, I don't know how easy it'll be to get into those if you haven't already been following Batman. Bruce Wayne is gone and Dick Grayson (original Robin) is now Batman and Bruce's son Damian is Robin.

That whole storyline was weird as hell. I've read Batman RIP, Final Crisis, and The Return of Bruce Wayne, and none of that shit makes a lick of sense. But I'm fine with that, because we got Morrison's Batman and Robin out of it, which was awesome.

I spent around an hour explaining it all to someone in a bar one night. It can be done but it takes a bit of work. David Uzumeri's annotations at Comics Alliance help a lot, but you still have to do a lot of work yourself (i.e. reading it multiple times and thinking about it all day long instead of working ahem)

Currently reading Moore's Supreme run. Really love it, though as much as it lovingly embraces (while teasing) the Golden/Silver Age, it's accuracy to it also makes me realize I'm on the fence between that and 90's Exxreme that it more harshly lampoons. Both were pretty shite, though at least the former had alot of fun with it.

Well, that seems unfortunate.
Quote
Mr. Moore, who has disassociated himself from DC Comics and the industry at large, called the new venture “completely shameless.”

Speaking by telephone from his home in Northampton, England, Mr. Moore said, “I tend to take this latest development as a kind of eager confirmation that they are still apparently dependent on ideas that I had 25 years ago.”
:lol

Moore's Supreme is beyond amazing.

At one time Moore himself pondered doing a Minutemen prequel, so I can sort of see where that comes from, but he gave so much backstory to the characters in the miniseries that I wonder what exactly the creators hope to tell us with this new stuff. Comedian is a nihilistic sadist/rapist who still has a single shred of decency left in him? Been covered. Dr. Manhattan was a normal man who became a god and lost his humanity along the way?  Welcome to 1986. Rorshach always had mental problems and went fully insane after seeing just how terrible people could be to each other? Check mark already in the box, hurm. Ozymandias had been plotting and scheming a bittersweet Utopia since the very beginning? See issues 1-12 of Watchmen. Nite Owl truly believed in what he was doing until he realized what he'd been doing had never really amounted to much more than playacting? See fat naked Dan Dreiberg panels. Silk Spectre was a better actual hero than her mother but could never live up to her memory or influence? Did you read the miniseries, just look at the pictures?

I mean, it's a complete story (albeit with, imo, a really awkward smh endgame) with all the history inside.

Yeah, it'sa  totally unnecessary and cynical exercise in copyright maintenance and fanbase-exploitation and I can see why Moore is pissed about it all over again. I am annoyed on his behalf because he really, genuinely doesn't want it to happen, and creators rights are important. DC has exploited a loophole in the original contracts for decades, and made millions out of it. Great short-term business decision for them, bad long-term business decision if they ever hope to have a creator on the level of Alan Moore do genuinely creative work for them again.

In a weird coincidence, considering both of these stories have been brewing for well over a decade, Neil Gaiman finally won his suit against Todd McFarlane over Gaiman's rights to characters he created for Spawn ages ago. He obviously has fuck-you money and is just doing it to make the point that comic creators' rights have to be respected by publishers. McFarlane seems to have been a total tool about it so glad to see him nailed to the wall.

Not only that, but Image was created in response to Marvel/DC's "fuck you" attitude to their talented staff, so having MacFarlane taking Gaiman to the mat over something like this is double-extra tool-like.

Picked up the Xombi and Batman:Gates of Gotham trades. Love Scott Snyder's Batman books.  Black mirror is still phenomenal after reading it a few times in a row.  It just captures this great frisson of detective work and psychological craziness I love in my Batbooks.

I wish I liked his American Vampire but it's just too blargh.  I guess "typical?"  I dunno.

American Vampire has a fair amount of variety and the art is consistently great, so you might find you like the later stuff even if you didn't like it in the early going. Check out the Jordi Bernet stuff, for example. It's basically a Western. The current storyline is set in the 50s, with a Rebel Without a Cause vibe. Great stuff.

Read Gates of Gotham last night.  It wasn't as good as the Black Mirror stuff, but it was still enjoyable.  I wish it had another issue so that it could expand on the mystery angle a bit more.

Started to read Xombi last night but had to stop because it looked too weird for casual reading.

http://www.thebore.com/forum/index.php?topic=33283.0

i was reading through my old posts in that thread, since then i have read watchmen again and had a slight change of heart

i still think the "reveal' ending is bad, and i still think the "sacred ground" argument doesn't really hold water, but i am of the opinion that this series of miniseries is totally unnecessary because the backstory has already been thoroughly covered and there's nothing new to tell there

will still download for more informed trolling purposes

ditto! I posted about it in here a few times I think. Pretty wild that 2 Borians showed up out of only 60 or so people in the world watching. It was pretty much no holds barred, wasn't it? Addressed a bunch of touchy issues head on, like the rapiness in much of his work, Grant Morrison, the issues with corporate comics...

It was pretty wild that there were two Bore users in there in such a small crowd. Small internet for sure! I haven't even looked at the Bore enough lately to have noticed it being talked up here so seeing someone there was an amusing surprise.

I tried recording the webcast with very little planning on my part... so I got video but no audio, oops  :lol
I'm pretty sure I would have been better off the other way around.

Fortunately the organizers will supposedly be distributing recordings later for a small price so it should end up out there. It's certainly possible that someone else recorded it themselves, but like Cormacaroni said, there were only about 60 people watching.

One interesting bit related to the contradiction between people using his work in the Watchmen prequels or move is of his work and the way he appropriates characters in LXG and Lost Girls.
I'm not sure his explanation was totally satisfactory but it seemed to come down to the difference between stealing (fine and done in literature forever) and adaptation (terrible).

He also did some interesting talking about time as a solid object that our consciousness passes through.

The Grant Morrison stuff was pretty good. He was dismissive of Morrison as an imitator who only came after him to get famous. Apparently he and Michael Moorcock argue about who Morrison rips off more (Moore says Moorcock).

Something else interesting was his dismissal of the sad, modern-life-is-hollow comics that he particularly saw coming from America (I assume the Dan Clowes kind of stuff) and said those creators should try to be more like Joe Sacco.

He answered my chat-delivered question about whether Brought to Light would ever come back into print (great book)... he said no one had talked to him about it and it would be unlikely because of all the trouble with its publication before. He thought it was a great piece of work and it's too bad, something like that.

Sure, his answer was a bit self-serving, and it boiled down to 'it's fine when a creative genius does it and not fine when a hack does it'.

But the big diff between Watchmen and LOEG etc is that the latter are public domain characters created by people who are now dead, and the former is by a creator who is very much alive and is so opposed to further abuse of the property that he gave up the movie rights and refused to take back the print rights from DC since that came with the condition that he would endorse the prequels.

Batman & Robin Vol 4: Dark Knight, White Knight
Kinda meh. After Morrison left, they brought in some fill-in writers to wrap up the series before the reboot, and it wasn't as good. The second arc of the book with this White Knight character was blah, and the third arc with Jason Todd could not have been any more boring, but first arc by Paul Cornell with The Absence was pretty awesome. Old girlfriend of Bruce gets shot in the head but survives because of a brain deformity, then goes nuts when Bruce doesn't show up at her funeral. Pretty hilarious.

Batman: Black Mirror
Just flat out awesome. This is the best bat-book I've read in a long time. :rock

Gonna go read Gates of Gotham and The Dark Knight - Golden Dawn now.

I found a used TPB of Batman: The Long Halloween at Green Apple Books in San Francisco.

I almost bought No-Man's Land, but couldn't remember if it was supposedly good or crap. And there were SO MANY volumes of it...

Also picked up The Umbrella Academy at a beleaguered little figure shop in Union City. The story's finish does not quite live up the promise of the first several issues, but it is, overall, pretty damned fantastic. The art is also very good, looking like a more freeform version of Mignola's Hellboy style.

Check out Daytripper and Casanova for more Ba / Moon art then (they're brothers with different surnames...). I prefer Moon but both are great.
