I think it was just some fatherly poking at worst.  But he definitely burned Dan hard there, haha.  Didn't know the old guy still had it in him.

Damn, just saw he turned 90 today

In general All New X-men 5 was pretty meh. From the unneeded and lame Beast change to more " I hate Cyclops KILL HIM!" talk from Cyclops. The books been decent, but it's still building up for wherever its going.

Anyway, I have a question? What did everyone think of Y The Last Man? I've been interested in picking up the trades and just wondering what opinions are.

Which one is supposed to be Beast  ??? One on the left looks like the original Hank McCoy, one on the right looks like...I've got nothin'.

Both of them are Beast.  All New X-Men's plot involves the current Beast going back in time to when the original X-Men were younger and bringing them to the present, in the hopes that what they encounter will have them change their ways and convince Cyclops not to turn out how he is now.  So far this has led to
spoiler (click to show/hide)
Jean Grey's telepathic powers developing faster than they originally did and the younger Beast saving his future self from dying.
[close]

It seems like this was supposed to be a "scared straight" tactic by Beast, but Jean Grey pushed to have them stay in the present to "fix" everything that's gone wrong.  So she's back.  Sort of.

It's pretty slow-paced, but I guess that's typical of Bendis.

yeah pretty much

i have marathoned Sweet tooth and have come to the conclusion that i just don't like it that much.  love Lemire's Essex County stuff and Underwater Wielder but didn't like ST at all.  It's just too much like every other post-apoc story out there.  The stuff that isn't like The Walking Dead is great (love the Gods stuff) but it's just so infrequent that I cannot recommend it.

So Superior Spider-Man #1 was scanned and released early, just like ASM #700 and Avenging Spider-Man #15 were.

AND GUESS WHO'S ALREADY BACK!?   :lol

So several times in Avenging #15 and Superior #1 Otto-Spider-Man's body has reacted on its own, doing heroic stuff that Otto wouldn't.

Is it the memories from Peter Parker or the responsibility-factor taking over?

NOPE!

spoiler (click to show/hide)
The ghost of Peter Parker appears on the last page and says that he has been with Otto since he died in Ock's body.  He is making Otto do stuff against his will, indicating that he still has some control over his own body and that he is going to keep fighting to get his body back.  So all that hype and build-up about Peter Parker being gone and there being an all-new Spder-Man has already been shot down.  Now it's gonna be Peter Vs. Ock for control of his body- which I might add Marvel ALREADY DID with Bruce Banner and the Hulk in the last Hulk series.   :dizzy

Yup, they killed off Peter Parker in the 616 universe...sorta.  From a page or two back:

Amazing Spider-Man #700 "leaked" and was scanned.  Apparently the follow-up comic to it also got scanned early.  Check the comics forum on 4chan...I'm sure a link is still there.

No real surprises here...it follows what started in #698, so that storyline was not a red herring of any kind-
spoiler (click to show/hide)
Spider-Man, in Doc Ock's dying body, makes a last-ditch effort to swap bodies and fails- Doc Ock in Spider-Man's body was prepared for the real Spider-Man to try switching bodies again and armored his head.  However Spider-Man's mind switch attempt does beam all of the good and bad events that defined him as a hero into Ock's mind, and he becomes "good."  Spider-Ock, dying, then makes Ock-Spider promise to protect his loved ones and blah blah blah.  It's kind of dull, really.  They also set it up for some characters to be suspicious.  I hope this leads to Ock-Spider turning bad later on and the Marvel Universe has to deal with an evil Spider-Man, leading to the inevitable return of the real Spider-Man, because right now it's less "The Superior Spider-Man" and more "The Slightly Different, Kind Of A Dick, But Trying To Be Good Spider-Man"

Also, Josh Simmon's The Furry Trap is some of the absolute most fucked up shit I have ever ever ever read.

Some of the strangest mind-altering transgressive stuff ever.  Takes the Prison Pit ultraviolence and adds meaning behind the content giving the images even more power.  The BEST thing in the book is a 6 page book called Jesus Christ which is about the return of a god to world full of worshipers.  The weakest story is the first story which is like Adventure Time for the mentally disturbed only with more rape.  If I'm inspired later I may take some photos of it and upload it here.  I can't tell if it's worth reading or not, but the book is labeled Horror Stories, and they are absolutely horrific but mostly tread in EXTREME SHOCK rather than any sort of low key content, however the low key tales are no less affecting (such as the incredibly fucked Demonwood).  Proceed at your own risk.

Another quick question from me.

Where's a good place to start if I want to read some Hellblazer. I've enjoyed Constantine in Justice League Dark, but I'm sure the actual Vertigo series is better. So just find some collected editions and start at the beginning? Any particular runs or storylines that are standout? Was Mike Carey's run good? I enjoyed his X-men stuff.

lots of great runs, mostly by British writers...Garth Ennis, Peter Milligan, Jamie Delano....I have a great fondness for the Ennis stuff. It's as good a place to start as any. The continuity isn't all that important since his supporting cast tends to get wiped out a lot :lol

The series is ending at 300, so I'm sure some Hellblazer geeks will put up articles re the best runs around then...

hellblazer is amazing and was for years (decades, really) my favorite comic book.

Jamie Delano is the first writer and did a lot of social commentary and straight up horror.  I enjoyed this run.

The Ennis stuff is the stuff I started with and so it's kind of like Bond in that the one you start with is your favorite. Many good stories there.

I didn't like the warren ellis stuff.

I liked Mike Carey's stuff but i also think that Lucifer is a WAY underrated masterpiece of urban fantasy

I haven't read much of the Diggle or Milligan runs so I can't comment there.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hellblazer has good synopsis of the runs.  as Cormac says, just jump in wherever sounds interesting and you should be good.

Yeah, you can't overstate Lucifer's greatness IMHO. It towers over basically everything in the Vertigo oeuvre except maybe Preacher, and it's a more ambitious and better-executed story than that. Epic story, huge scope, massively inventive, thematically challenging. NEED TO FIND TIME TO REREAD

OK, i'll throw out something that is getting NO attention but deserves it. Jennifer Blood, by Al Ewing and <the shittiest artist in the world>. Ewing took over this extremely unpromising 'What if the Punisher was a housewife' package from Garth Ennis, and has turned it into something extraordinary and genuinely unpredictable. It feels dangerous, like it could end explosively at any time. The downside: horrible good-girl covers, terrible shat-out interior art, vile coloring. But the story and the writing is fantastic; sharp, funny, with a wonderful ear for dialog. It would be criminal to spoil it, but I feel like the whole thing went off the rails about 6 months ago and may never get back on them. It might be ending next month for all I know. It just feels like anything could happen at this point.

But yeah first I'm going to try Y The Last Man. I really enjoyed Saga Vol 1, so so far Vaughan has me interested in trying out his other stuff.

Lucifer is massively better than his capey stuff, and 'Y'. But no reason why you can't read both. Carey's 'Unwritten' is good stuff as well, and occasionally reaches 'great'.

little theory of mine on what is under that serving dome the Joker is showing off in Batman 16 -

spoiler (click to show/hide)
I think it’s going to be Bruce Wayne’s alleged brother from Court of the Owls – a family member (if his story is true) and someone who usurped Batman’s attention while the Joker was gone. A few other things in the dialog hint at it too. Obviously the serving dish is a pretty strong hint that it IS Alfred but I think that’s misdirection. Let’s face it, it’d be much easier to kill off a character they just invented rather than a key piece of the mythology than Alfred

He may have seemingly burned bridges at both Marvel and DC in recent years, but there's no reason to feel sorry for Rob Liefeld just yet. Not only are his creator-owned titles undergoing new critical appraisal thanks to last year's Image relaunch, but now he has a new project in development for the big screen. Is the world really ready for a Godyssey movie?

Variety reported earlier this week that producers Todd Garner and Brooklyn Weaver have signed up the movie rights to Liefeld's 1996 one-shot (Originally a spin-off from Liefeld's Avengelyene and Glory titles), with plans to develop the idea into a fully-fledged stand-alone movie. Both producers already had relationships with the comic book creator thanks to other projects; Garner had tried to buy Liefeld's 2003 sci-fi comedy pitch Planet Terry (Unrelated to the Marvel comic of the same name), while Weaver is currently attached to the in-development movie incarnation of the creator's Bloodstrike character.

If you're despairing about what this means for the future of modern culture, it's worth remembering that deals like this don't necessarily translate into finished movies (For instance, it's nine years later and we still haven't seen that Planet Terry movie yet). For those who remember Godyssey and also value cinema as a medium, this is a fact to desperately cling to; for everyone else, here's a taste of what you missed:

btw, that Nexus Omnibus is the BOMB. $14 on amazon for 400 pages of sci-fi awesome. Also available digitally on the Dark Horse app or their web store. I actually collected it in issues back in the day (along with Badger :heart) but never quite got it because reading a synopsis of all the set-up is just not the same as actually reading it, I think. It's so much more accessible and enjoyable if you just read it from the start. I'd say it's of interest to readers of Saga, albeit more cerebral and dense. And the art, oh my god. In the early issues he is still finding his style, so he shifts from Alex Toth to Steve Ditko to Alex Raymond to Kirby to Paul Gulacy even inside the same panel. And when he settles on his own style it is just sublime. :bow Steve Rude :bow2  14 BUCKS PEOPLE

I liked most of the old Valiant stuff. Have they changed much about it, or is it pretty much a continuation?

i have no idea, never read the originals. Not sure whether it's a retelling or a reinvention. It's not a continuation as far as I can tell, everything seems to start at ground zero

i really only liked the first wave.  solar, magnus, xo, harbinger etc.  Never really got into Turok or Bloodshot originally so i don't really have much in the way of curiosity on that front

I picked up what I assume(well duh it says number 1) is the first HellBlazer collection. Seems pretty good. The bookstore had random collections as well, but it seems best to start with the first.

I also picked up All Star Superman. Been wanting to read this since I like Grant Morrison and Frank Quintly back from reading X-men. I'm hoping this is just as good. I do want to ask you guys what other Morrison stuff I should read, but I won't be able to get to any recommendations soon since Y The Last Man is my buying priority.

We3 is probably the most accessible of the Morrison/Quitely collaborations, Flex is probably the least so. It is amazing though.

Invisibles is his defining work but it's a fucking project. For sheer fun, nothing beats his JLA stuff (there are nice oversized hardcover collections of these, which include the Quitely Earth 2 stuff). Batman Inc is the best of his current work by far, and Chris Burnham's art should be in your wheelhouse if you like Quitely.

All-Star Superman renewed my respect for Morrison as a writer. His sensitivity to the mythos and tone of Superman were really surprising. I am not a fan of Supes, but Morrison somehow channeled all the goofy, fun, outrageous crap from my childhood love of the character, and revitalized it into something an adult can enjoy.

Has anyone read the French comic series Lanfeust Of Troy?  I just finished all eight books and really enjoyed it.  Going through Cixi Of Troy now and will then move onto Lanfeust Of The Stars.  There are several spin-off/prequel series out there too.  Not sure if this is available for purchase anywhere, but scanned translations are floating around.

Was at the Half Priced Books and while I missed the Excalibur(1st series) 1-20 for $20 bundle they had, they had a complete 7 Soldiers bundle for $25. I see it's by Grant Morrison with 2 issues drawn by the guy who does Batwoman. Is this worth picking up? I see it's a crossover that has people like Zatana who I've read before and I think's pretty cool, but yeah my DC knowledge is pretty nil.

I also picked up all of Nextwave. it was very funny.

Seven Soldiers is great - bit complex but you can still enjoy the individual stories without having to get too far into continuity OCD

Well I got the internet to help with any misunderstandings. Next time I'm there and if it's still there I'll pick it up.

Other then that I decided to pick up Saga in single issues, just can't wait for the next trade. Really enjoying it, even got my mom to read some of it.
