Seven Soldiers was really good. It's not heavily tied into continuity and most of the characters in it are obscure, rarely-used characters, or characters Morrison made up for the series.

Seven Soldiers is great, all of its major continuity is internal.

It MIGHT help to brush up a bit on Kirby's New Gods for the Mister Miracle section - it works without it, but you'll get a lot more if you do a 10-minute Wiki refresher on the major players.

I think it's absurd in this day and age to print some garbage in another language, really. It just suggests to me that the dude is trying to speak to Arabic culture but doesn't have a single Facebook friend or whatever to reach out to in order to check his script. I see the most bizarre shit written in pseudo-Japanese all the time - the still they released from 'The Wolverine' had some wacko mistake too. You'd think somewhere in the $100 million budget they'd find $10 to show it to an actual Japanese person

Yes, Habibi is very good. Problematic in terms of gender treatment/sexualization of children and such for sure but still an amazing piece of work.

oh yeah, and that is addressed in the text. But he doesn't HAVE to draw endless pages of nude children in sexualized poses, or being the object of lust, or raped etc etc..it's an artistic choice regardless of the milieu he is working in

Kenneth Rocafort's art in Superman is probably the best the book as seen in a long, long time.

Almost makes me want to go back and read his Red Hood stuff, but then...Jason Todd.

Cool, glad you enjoyed it, and the Arabic didn't grate overly. I found the linguistic / mythology stuff fascinating. I read Craig Thompson's travel art diary as well, which shows some of the travelling he did as part of research (or inspiration for) Habibi. It's really good, although there is a fair amount of Live Journal-y self-pity and such in there as well, it being literally a diary...i think it's a lot less formal and easier to read than Blankets or Habibi.

Anyway, I was just given this Anomaly graphic novel thing. It's pretty intense looking, but well I've never heard of it. I was given it and well I mean it looks nice and it's the CE and well signed by the author and everything, but is it any good?

Green Lantern should be a no-brainer. Space cop with magic wishing ring is a baller concept. Instead though, it seems to have disappeared up the event horizon of it's own internal mythology. I honestly can't think of a single Green Lantern comic i'd actually want someone else to read

I went on a binge of reading old Marvel comics from the 70's over the weekend, and hoooolleeeee shit are the letter cols and Soapboxes fascinating after reading Sean Howe's Marvel: The Untold Story. Who is our Editor-in-Chief? WE DON'T KNOW Who is writing the Avengers now? WE DON'T KNOW, HERE IS A JACK KIRBY REPRINT etc etc

As a kid i just assumed the adult gods who made these things knew what they were doing but ooooohhhhh nooooo. I can't even imagine what modern DC must be like.

Manabyte isn't too far off.   :lol

Actual spoilers:

Quote
The issue opens right where Batman #16 ended. The Joker has Batman strapped to an electric chair at the head of a table. On each side of the table sits the members of the family, each with their faces rapped in bloody bandages. The Joker tells Batman that they’ve each been anointed with gasoline and that there’s flint under his chair. So if he tries to bail out, they’ll all die in a fire. He reveals the cover from the dinner, and inside are the faces of each member of the family. Of course this really sets Batman off, but being Batman he has a way out because he’s smarter than the Joker.

It turns out the whole faces being ripped off thing was another Joker prank, and Batman is reunited with the family right before The Joker douses all of them with his gas, which causes the members of the family to start fighting it out with each other as Batman chases the Joker down.

What follows is a Batman/Joker confrontation and dialog that ranks right up there with the two’s final battle in The Dark Knight Returns. I don’t know if it was an intentional Sherlock Holmes reference or not, but they face each other right above a huge waterfall. As Batman is really beginning to get to the Joker and get under his skin, The Joker takes a swan dive off the waterfall as his face flutters in the wind. Capullo’s art in these panels with the Joker falling and his face fluttering off is pretty awesome.

In the end, the family is still together…if a bit scarred. Alfred is saved and Bruce is now the caretaker as he recovers. The whole truth on whether or not The Joker knew Batman’s true identity is dealt with, in a way that is perfect for The Joker.

I really hate nitpicking superhero comics because it is the proverbial breaking a butterfly on a wheel but this one actually seemed like it might have some teeth. But no. Certainly it was very well done though, loved some of the Capullo panels. Genuinely creepy. And Snyder has a good handle on the various voices and so forth. But I think I ultimately preferred the Owls storyline because it actually went somewhere.

new deadwardians was pretty good but there were a few stylistic anachronisms which threw me out of the world

one was a very simple use of the word "sucks" in a protest sign which seemed really vulgar given the time frame and setting, the other was a propaganda poster which stylistically didn't fit the time period either.

aside from that, rather enjoyable little mystery with a kind of gonzo conclusion

DC is so horrible these days, so horrible

I wonder if anyone has inventoried how many of the original New 52 are still being published? There was another huge swathe of cancellations recently. I don't know why anybody would give a new book a chance these days. I think I'm down to 3 Batman books and that's it. I actually buy more Valiant books than DC now in fact (Bloodshot, Archer & Armstrong, Harbinger, XO Man of war). I want DC to keep publishing in some form but the books are just so bad. I've stopped even giving new books from them a chance

Best Marvel books currently, off the top of my head:

- Hawkeye
- Wolverine and the X-Men
- Fury: My War Gone By
- Thor
- Daredevil

But the overall quality bar is a lot higher, I think. There are plenty of non-essential but solidly good books like FF or Avengers Assemble or All New X-Men or Captain America. If you're into that kind of thing, there is quality fan service to be found. Whereas the average DC book right now is something garbage like Stormwatch or Team 7

So the current rumor is that "Age of Ultron" is going to be Marvel's "Flashpoint". The solicitation for issues 7 and 8 came out and it involves time travel, and people are saying it'll result in a line-wide continuity reboot for Marvel. If that happens it'll be the second #1 relaunch for them in a year.

That doesn't make any sense-  Marvel NOW! is their "reboot."  Plus aren't there additional "AoA" branded books coming out alongside the regular issues?  It seems to be self-contained.

The "world breaking" stuff listed in the solicit for issue #7 will be cleared up by the end of the mini series in issue #10.

Marvel isn't going to do a DC New 52-style reboot.  They've been doing soft reboots on titles for the last few years.  "This will have an effect on the Marvel Universe for years to come" just means Ultron will be back as a villain and/or some character(s) get changed up a bit.  Typical shit.

But it would be funny to see the meltdowns if they did do this- especially if they were to just reset everything that's happened to Spider-Man like it never happened.   :lol

Comics are so confusing, I don't know how anyone can possibly keep up with them. There are so many crossovers, events, and continuity, that if you don't start immediately from the start of a reboot and get every issue, it can get very easy to get hopelessly lost. I would love to be able to read comics through single issues, because I feel that comics are to books what tv is to movies. But my word, the invest of time and especially money is astronomical. I just have to stick with the occasional odd tpb, and hope that the story is as self-contained as possible.

the Spider-Man thing is clearly heading for a 'reset' - back to Spider-man pre-Dan Slott basically. At some point it will all relaunch and all that annoying continuity (Spider-man being an Avenger, being a cool rich scientist at Horizon, MJ + girls generally, having cool equipment, being loved by Jameson et al) that has built up will be gone and he'll be back to being a feared and hated loner with no strings. This is all seen as 'fixing' a character. What we call 'story' in other mediums is called 'breaking' it. COMICS!

If you care at all about this stuff, Yeti, you should read some non-Marvel / DC comics. Stuff like Walking Dead, Hellboy, BPRD, Invincible, the Valiant stuff I mentioned earlier - you may not have the instant recognition factor you get with Spider-man or Batman but at least when stuff happens, it sticks for the most part. Not saying it's ever gonna be cheap though :lol

This was actually the point of the Ultimate line of Marvel comics: a place for new readers to start, safe and sound, able to follow everything from the outset. I think it, too, became overly interwoven and needlessly complex pretty quickly, but that's just my impression.
