Pretty great short film by Bruce Timm.

Also, a good Bob Kane story, by Jim Steranko:

I've had the first three trade paperback volumes of Warren Ellis' FREAKANGELS forever, and finally read through them over the past week. Tonight I read through the fourth and half of the fifth volumes tonight, as he still is offering them for free online. Story starts to go weird places, and I'm really enjoying the direction.

As for Paul Duffield... I don't think he was a very good artist when he started the series, but he has significantly improved by episode 90.

Dan Slott was told there was a movie coming out and they needed the AMay2ing Spider-Man back

Don't see how Amazing Spider-Man #1 could get new readers-- you need to have read 30+ issues of previous comics to follow it.

He's not black.  ASM#1 had several back-up stories dealing with the fallout from Superior Spider-Man.  Electro's was that he was pissed off at Spider-Man for messing with his powers.   Didn't really feel like a big deal, unlike the Black Cat backup, where she ended up going to prison after getting caught after encountering SPock   (Ock decked her in the face and knocked out some teeth, too)  and was planning her revenge on Spider-Man, still unaware of what happened to him.

ah cool, like i said i haven't read it myself and am not really a comic reader but my friend did lend me some issues of superior foes of spiderman and i am loving it, genuinely funny and cool seeing shocker portrayed as a complete wuss, very different to his charater in the 90s cartoon

marvel's BIG books (avengers, x-men) don't really do it for me.  I just read the smaller books.  The success of Hawkeye has given Marvel an incentive to play around a bit with their B-tier characters so they're currently fairly interesting.

She-Hulk is damn near perfect for a She-Hulk book.  It's big and brash and colorful and a lot of fun.

Loki Agent of Asgard is really uneven.  The most recent issue was good but the two previous weren't that great, I don't feel.

Ghost Rider is strange.  It's using slang and stuff that's way out of date, but it's visually very well done.  It's def influenced by Fast and the Furious, but it's only had two issues so I can't really speak to it's quality just yet

Black Widow wasn't that great to start and it still falters here and there but it's entertaining if a bit po faced at times.

Captain America is p good.  I liked the Trapped in Dimension Z arc which opened the series, but the next two (with Nuke and Dr Mindbubble) haven't been as entertaining. Going to just wait for them to pop up on MU

Daredevil is wonderful, but now it's $4 so I'm not picking that up in single issues anymore. Will read on MU

Hulk is just disappointing.  I don't think that Waid has a good idea of what to do with him.

Mighty Avengers is very good but not great.  I think it suffers a bit being under the Avengers editorial line forcing it into cross overs rather than standing on its own

Ms Marvel is good, but I've read complaints of its stereotypical treatment of Muslims (but considering the previous treatment of Muslims in mainstream comics, this may be better)

Secret Avengers has only had two issues but it's nice and goofy just the way i like it.  Bromance between Coulson and Fury is fun. Not currently forced into continuity hell, but it may be at any moment

Superior Foes of Spider-Man is just wonderful but will probably be cancelled soon (which is a goddamn shame).  The past two issues have been fill ins and have been trash.

Like Eric, Avengers has not been for me and I don't read any of the books except for the unrelated Mighty Avengers and Uncanny Avengers.  Would probably read Secret Avengers, but I can't stand the art.   That goes for stuff like Elektra as well.  The artist's work is beautiful, but just doesn't fit the book to me.

General musings:

-IIRC The Avengers and Secret Avengers books have been all about parallel worlds and how the multiple earths are crossing over into other universes, crashing into one another, and destroying everything.  The Secret Avengers (Illuminati) have been working to stop this.

-X-Men: All the books are all over the place, which is good in the sense that you can read one and not bother with another, without missing any story.  The best of the bunch is All-New X-Men, which while slow moving and very...Bendis, has turned out awesome.  They recently had a crossover event with the Guardians Of The Galaxy, where Jean Grey was taken by the Shiar and put on trial for being the Phoenix -again- even though she hasn't done any of that yet.  Young Cyclops then left the team to stay in space with the Star Jammers, which I believe is the focus of the new Cyclops solo book.  In the other X books...not too much is really happening.  It's like they've lost direction.  Oh, and Nightcrawler came back from the dead.

-X-Force: The Cable and Psylocke-led X-Force books both ended and have been consolidated into one X-Force book with a new team (that still has Cable and Psylocke).  It's...weird.

-Guardians Of The Galaxy: Also feels like nothing is really happening with these guys, but they appear to be building up to something with Thanos for the umpteenth time.  Angela, who came into the Marvel Universe as a result of the rips in space-time from the Age Of Ultron event, is just a minor character and pretty irrelevant.  No idea why they made a big deal out of that character coming in.   The book started with Iron Man on the team, but he left and decided that there should always be an Avenger with them, so now it's Agent Venom (Flash Thompson) with them.  Captain Marvel is popping up too.  Her new book has a space focus.  Nova has been a surprisingly enjoyable read and is generally pretty self-contained.

-Spider-Man: Already talked about it earlier.  Peter Parker is back and the big new plot twist is a retcon that show the radioactive spider biting a female student after Peter.  Spider-Man 2099 is still stuck in the present time and will be getting a new solo book soon.  Scarlet Spider no longer has a book but is in the new New Warriors series.

-Thunderbolts: Red Hulk and his assembled team doin' thangs in secret.  Has him, Deadpool, Elektra, The Punisher, Ghost Rider, and Red Leader (a resurrected and pussified Samuel Sterns, who recently has begun to turn on them).  Quality varies from story to story.

-Ultimate Comics: The Cataclysm event (616 universe Galactus merging with the Ultimate universe Galactus swarm and attempting to 'eat' the Earth) is over, with the fallout being that the Ultimates and Shield are no more.  Captain America is supposedly dead (died off panel, lol  ::)) and Thor is trapped in some void of nothingness with Galactus.  There are three new books: New Ultimates, which could also be called "Spider-Man and his amazing friends 2.0" as it continues storyline from the previous Ultimate Spidey book, and brings together a team of younger super heroes (Spider-Man, Kitty Pryde, Cloak & Dagger, Bombshell, and Black Widow, who is a renamed Spider-Woman [who uses the name Jessica Drew, but is a female clone of Peter Parker]).  Miles Morales: Ultimate Spider-Man is a new Spidey solo book that just started this week.  The storyline focuses on two 'evil' Spider-Man like dudes causing trouble and ends with Miles coming home to his father's apartment and finding
spoiler (click to show/hide)
Peter Parker there, waiting for him.  Will likely be one of the two evil Spider-Men guys and/or is another evil clone.
[close]
There's also Ultimate FF, bringing together Iron Man, Sue Storm, The Falcon and I forget who the fourth member is, lol.

She-Hulk is damn near perfect for a She-Hulk book.  It's big and brash and colorful and a lot of fun.

Hate the art.  Dude draws some of the ugliest-looking faces I have ever seen.

Quote
Ghost Rider is strange.  It's using slang and stuff that's way out of date, but it's visually very well done.  It's def influenced by Fast and the Furious, but it's only had two issues so I can't really speak to it's quality just yet

Yup, looks slick and other than that it's too early to tell how it's going to end up.  This appears to be a different spirit, since the Johnny Blaze Ghost Rider is in the Thunderbolts comics.

Quote
Hulk is just disappointing.  I don't think that Waid has a good idea of what to do with him.

Are you talking about the new 'retardo' Hulk?  It's pretty bad, yeah.

Quote
Mighty Avengers is very good but not great.  I think it suffers a bit being under the Avengers editorial line forcing it into cross overs rather than standing on its own

Will be better once they get Greg Land the fuck off that book.  Would also prefer they stick to everything being "street level."  Blue Marvel doesn't fit in with the rest of the characters in this regard.

Quote
Ms Marvel is good, but I've read complaints of its stereotypical treatment of Muslims (but considering the previous treatment of Muslims in mainstream comics, this may be better)

Like Ghost Rider, it's too early to tell how this is going to turn out.

The new Daredevil is amazing the last time I read it. I'm glad the quality is still up but 4 bucks? Why the fuck did they reboot Amazing Spidey?

It almost sounds like a good thing I've been avoiding Marvel for the past year plus.

I'm glad She-Hulk is good. I'll check it out.

What about non DC and Marvel comics? What's good there these days? Anything that is up to manga variety, Eric?

I read a lot of Image titles as well right now

Alex + Ada is a very nice story about a man and his sexbot.  He's not into owning a docile slave (basically) so it's about that rather than what you'd expect a comic involving a sexbot to be about

Burn the Orphanage - started off as a 3 part series that paid homage to certain video games (first one was Streets of Rage / Final Fight, second  was Street Fighter, thrid was Mortal Kombat).   It's a lot of fun and a new 5 issue miniseries just started up but i haven't read anything of it yet

Fatale - Lovecraft Noir.  V problematic treatment of women but if you can get past that it's nice

Rat Queens - basically a drunk sassy fantasy book.  I absolutely love it.

Black Science - Anarchist Sliders w/ a huge twist at the end of the most recent issue.  I like it a lot.

Ghosted is dumb fun which is just sliding into dumb unfortunately.  was supposed to be limited but turned ongoing and i don't think the writer has any ideas that match the first 5 issues

pretty deadly - baroque insane mythic western.  beautiful art, incomprehensible story

rocket girl - present time teen girl cop goes back to the 1980s to take down a criminal who may be responsible for creating a Utopia.  kind of complex philosophically but it's more about Teen Girl Cop than it is about Sir Thomas More

Saga - complex family drama about aliens.  V GOOD.

Sheltered - survivalist kids become convinced the apocalypse is nigh, so they kill their parents and go into lock down.  it's about the drama of that social circle in the extreme circumstances they brought on themselves.

Southern Bastards just started, but I loved the writer's previous long form crime comics work in Scalped, so I'm in for this

the fuse - cop drama on a space station

Undertow - strange atlantean drama about courtly intrigue w/ a nemo figure who wants to destroy atlantis so that their species can advance

velvet - what if miss moneypenny from james bond were the bad ass secret agent?

zero - ales kott's amazing future-ish spy comic

and that's just the stuff i'm buying on the regular.  there's a ton more stuff out there from Image which is wildly different in tone and quality.

All New X-men good?.......

Don't know about that. Unless you think repeating the same crap over and over good.

I mean I'm going to have to disagree with the point of "nothing else happens in the other xbooks". Nothing is happening in All New. It is the same argument over and over again. The 05 are here and it's bad. That's it, the series has hardly moved past that. The series honestly only focuses on Jean with pretty much all the other characters in the background. Yet all it does with Jean is the same thing it's been doing for 20+ issues. All it does is keep showing teases of the Phoniex and how terrible Jeans life became. Even the Guardians Crossover did'nt do anything and the premise was stupid. Yes lets put Jean on trial even though: Jean was alive for years after DP and wait it wasn't jean. The entire series has honestly been flimsy excuses for anything that's happening. Thats fine, but the thing is nothing happens in All New. It's just spinning it's wheels on an idea that it has'nt done much with.

At least in Uncanny X-men you're getting actual new characters and not just young versions of characters where they can't even use the older ones well, let alone the young ones. The entire plotline with Shield, Mystique, and Cyclops is actually going somewhere. At least it feels like something is happening in the X verse.

X-men has been pretty disappointing. X-Force is just it's own crew doing something. X-Factor is the same. Uncanny Avengers dosen't feel like it's a part of anything, but it's all epic fun.

I'd say all are better then All New which dosen't feel like it does anything. It's the same conversations and developments over and over. I get it, the 05 may effect time(somehow). Jean's future is troubling(somehow). blah blah.

Rahx, will respond to your post tomorrow when I'm not so tired.   :)

Forgot to mention Wolverine- Didn't read the previous series where this storyline began, but Logan has lost his healing factor and is now "killable."

This has led to a new solo series where it appears that Wolverine has become a bad guy and joined a team of baddies doin' bad thangs for a bad guy.  He has a suit of power armor to make up for his lack of a healing factor and pain from popping his claws now, which was designed for him by (Doc Ock) Spider-Man.

BUT WAIT!  It's all a ruse!  He's a good guy and he's GONE UNDERCOVER and HOLY SHIT THIS SUCKS.  The last Wolverine movie is long over with, Marvel- he's back to normal in the new one.

I think Wolverine has been ok. Some of the issues of the previous Volume were actually decent.

I'll second Velvet, Saga, Fatale, and Pretty Deadly. I've also enjoyed Lazarus, East of West, and Nowhere Men from the Image line.

All New X-men good?.......

Don't know about that. Unless you think repeating the same crap over and over good.

It was painfully slow to start, but has gotten better.  I like that they are having characters join/leave instead of always sticking with the same original five, too.

Quote
I mean I'm going to have to disagree with the point of "nothing else happens in the other xbooks". Nothing is happening in All New. It is the same argument over and over again. The 05 are here and it's bad. That's it, the series has hardly moved past that.

You have them going over to Cyclops' side, young Cyclops going off with the Starjammers, a possible love triangle with young Cyke/Jean/X-23, Jean's new powers, and now the future "Brotherhood" returning to fight them.

Quote
The series honestly only focuses on Jean with pretty much all the other characters in the background. Yet all it does with Jean is the same thing it's been doing for 20+ issues. Agreed that them going after Jean to put her on trial like that was dumb, but the story itself was fun and resulted in a different/altered set of powers for her.  The focus is not just on Jean; Cyclops and Kitty also get a lot time.  There's definitely less focus on Beast, Iceman, and Angel though.  That's for sure.

Quote

The entire plotline with Shield, Mystique, and Cyclops is actually going somewhere. At least it feels like something is happening in the X verse.

It's not going anywhere and that's the problem.  The thing with Mystique taking over Madripoor has been going on for several years already.  The whole split between the Cyclops/Wolverine faction also no longer seems to make any sense and they've even teamed up several times already.

X-Men as a whole needs an overhaul.

Quote
X-men has been pretty disappointing. X-Force is just it's own crew doing something. X-Factor is the same. Uncanny Avengers dosen't feel like it's a part of anything, but it's all epic fun.

The first X-Men storyline with the weird bacteria-chick was hard to get through.  New Lady Deathstrike-Latina chick-hyrbid woman making a new evil Sisterhood might turn out OK.  X-Factor is totally new.  I've only read the first issue and can't comment, but I really don't care much for Gambit in general.

Uncanny Avengers is the REAL X-Force, continuing from the previous series.  Totally self-contained and awesome.  Would definitely recommend.

World War III doesn't come into play until late, somewhere around issue 48 or 49 iirc. If you make it that far, you'll definitely want to read WW3 tho.

You're at the part where it gets great. Before that, it's really good. But with Arlong Park, it gets fantastic.

And here's the kicker.

It gets better.

And better.

And better.

One Piece is so consistent in its quality, that I've been reading it for 11 years and only the recent arc has ever bored me and I'm going to be catching up on that soon.  You like One Piece now? Just you wait.

So glad you're reading the GOAT comic. :heart

Someone explain. In Action Comics they went from Superman being considered a menace to Metropolis without his full suit. Then in issue 5 suddenly they have him with a whole group of dudes that were NOT introduced, there's a flash forward NOT explained, he suddenly wears his full suit and just what the FUCK. I've gone through issues 4 and 5 three times now to see if I skipped pages and nothing. What the shit.

Should have got Batman breh. Court of Owls and Death of the Family were pretty good.

Zero Year is kind of confusing but it's a prequel so whatevs.

Edit- Ah, Morrison did Action Comics? That explains it. Batman Inc was convoluted as fuck (and had a super weak conclusion.)

Okay. So from what I gather he and Rags went on a break. And Rags wanted to continue the first arc, so Grant decided to make a whole NEW arc that lasted three issues. They come out of nowhere. There's no explanation for them. Suddenly Superman is in one timeline, the next issue he's in a totally different unexplained timeline in the future. On issue 7, Rags is back on the team and they continue the original arc.

Typical green "Hulk Smash!" Hulk is pretty boring, yeah.  But it really depends on which Hulk incarnation it is that we're talking about.

I like the other Hulks more, though.  Red Hulk, Red She-Hulk, and even Lyra and Skaar and holy shit there's too many Hulks now.

Copyright or not, She-Hulk is one of the best Marvel books going now. :obama

Would like to read it but that art is just butt-ugly.   :yuck

Yeah, though Stan is fibbing (as usual) too.  She-Hulk was created for the same reason Spider-Woman/Spider-Girl/Supergirl/Superboy/etcetc were created: to secure a copyright.  Specifically there, CBS was looking to create a female spin-off of the Hulk TV series a la the Bionic Woman, which Marvel wouldn't have gotten a lick from.

I'm not going to say that every writer has treated She-Hulk respectfully (I think Chuck Austen had her fuck the Juggernaut for REASONS), but she's actually a pretty good female character by cape-comic standards.  In my personal opinion, she's a far better character than her cousin.

Another thing- Wasn't She-Hulk originally more "savage" like the Hulk was?  I thought the character didn't really get the personality that she has now until John Byrne came along and did her solo book in the late 80s.

HULK FINE PROVIDED HULK HAVE GREAT STORYLINE. HULK THINK NEXT HULK FILM SHOULD BE PLANET HULK.

(note: Planet Hulk is way more interesting as a concept than it was in execution...)

Comixology doing a free-comic-a-day thing for the next 19 days. Yesterday was a Batman comic, today is Magnus, Robot Fighter.

The promotion is the top banner on the front page.

Re: Superman stuff.

I'm pretty behind on most of these books and just read the Krypton Returns storyline.  The ending made no sense to me.  Superboy saves Argo City from blowing up with Krypton and dies in the process.  Superman and Supergirl are just like "eh" and go back to their own time.  Except that this didn't happen in Suberboy's own comic, where he was in the future with the Teen Titans and HOW THE FUCK IS THAT POSSIBLE.  Now there is another Superboy, apparently evil, who has replaced him and come back from the future.  He's supposed to be different, yet looks exactly the same and has the same powers.

Now DC is doing the New 52 version of Doomsday.

Warren Ellis' Gravel is the free comic today on Comixology. If you were frightened off by the Tales of My Little Pony offering, as I was, it's safe to go back now.

Also, über on-topic:

Liefield! Shady business practices (sidelong Kickstarter dig), and comics-as-big-business.

Weird to think about Marvel/Disney being willing to cut off their nose to spite their face on this.

Seems to be less cutting off their noses to spite their face and more like taking a short term hit for a potential huge long term gain.  So they don't sell any X-Men toys or Fantastic Four comics for a while.  How much is that worth?  They split the toy revenues with Fox, and FF comics sell, like, five copies a month.  If they can weaken the IPs sufficiently for Fox to return them (or fork over full merch rights as with Sony/Spider-Man), that's worth a lot more.  If I were Marvel, I'd be undermining the *shit* out of those properties to try to get them back.

yeah, Marvel threatening to cancel Fantastic Four comic is the first time most people have remembered there's a Fantastic Four comic in 5+ years

Yeah, it's amazing to see how far Marvel went on their own. I remember being so excited when X-Men didn't suck, and the Raimi Spider-Man didn't suck, and then I heard Marvel got the notion to start doing ALL their properties in house at "Marvel Studios," and I thought OH, HOLY FUCK. LOOK WHO GOT ALL FULL OF THEMSELVES, TOO BIG FOR THEIR BRITCHES. THIS IS GOING TO suuuuuuck.

...And then X-Men: Last Stand and Spider-Man 3 sucked instead.  :-\

...And then Marvel Studios' output all turned out great, so far. :hyper

I wonder if they'll make a Hulk movie with Ruffalo. I mean, they're playing fast and loose with his anger management ability, but I'd sure be willing to watch them try!

So yeah, I think The Wake has been pretty disappointing. I don't think the story fit the 10 issue limited series format.

It dosen't help that they spent the first few issues set in the past. Well maybe it help to set up this mystery, because I guess it did. You do have a cool mystery of what these mers are. Add in the fact that they are clearly doing some dream scare shit and it's pretty engrossing. Yet, thats kind of dropped. The horror in the sea angle is dropped pretty quickly as it goes straight into action. While we still don't know exactly what the mers are I even feel the mystery tone has been dropped.

But it also hurts that a lot of the characters aren't developed in the past. You have a cool set-up with the main character Lee, some cliche "im'a single mother dialogue", but it's something. Yet it never goes anywhere. We get her character type and then the book does nothing with her. Some of her side characters like the gruff action dude who looks cool end up doing nothing. Mostly because they all die.

Then it goes into the future. The future is so cool with all this strange stuff like air ships and a flooded America. And quite honestly I don't think it does much. Like I really want to see the world that this story takes place in, but we never really explore it. Again, the story sets up cool characters and thier obvious character types, but it never does much.

There's this captain of this Mer ship with a robot arm. Obviously eccentric. Yet, we never get much of his character. The main character in the future part is a tough girl with a dolphin sidekick. Cool, but there's not much more to her then "tough". Cool looking roughneck dude is the number two enemy and roughneck is really only thing to describe him. The characters go on this journey and only mention the adventures they went on during it. They all seem cool and we don't see them. That is such a shame, because this flooded world just seems cool and you've only gotten a poorly cooked slice of it. I mean the enemies fly around on this big Stealth Bomber airship with an american flag paint job. It's crazy and we just get glimpses of this crazy without actually exploring it.

There's only one issue left and I guess it will be a big info dumb. I guess that will be nice, but man I really just wanted more stories with these potentially cool characters and world.
