The japafag in you is strong, because you seem to understand all that crap.
All I know so far is that people turn into those weird monsters when they fail at something. The rest was pretty strange. Maybe because of all the "cie" words.
They should've used more different names. It's a bit confusing this way.

I'm currently at the point where I can use crystarium. That system is so flashy.

By the way. So you can continue playing the game after beating the end boss? I heard that you should do the sidequests after beating the boss. Lame.

Yes you can. You unlock even further levels of Crystarium. Its REQUIRED to do some of the endgame shit / trophies.

They turn into those monsters if they fail their focus. It's just a fancy word for mission

Here you go, this should help clear things up:
Quote
The plot of Final Fantasy XIII takes place in a world known as Pulse and revolves around the story of the fal'Cie (ファルシ, farushi?) (pronounced /ˈfælsiː "fal see"/), mechanical beings with godlike power created by a being called the Marker. Each fal'Cie has crystals residing inside them.[13] People who are marked by the fal'Cie are called l'Cie (ルシ, rushi?).[24] Each l'Cie has a Focus, a goal the fal'Cie wants him or her to fulfill within a certain amount of time; however, the fal'Cie do not explicitly say what the goal is: l'Cie learn what their Focus is by interpreting visions that are given to them. L'Cie gain the ability to summon Eidolons (monsters who fight with the l'Cie), but this ability comes with a price: if a l'Cie dies before completing his or her Focus, fails to tame his or her Eidolon, or fails to complete his or her Focus within a set period of time, he or she becomes a monster known as a Cie'th (シ骸, shigai?, Cie Corpse in the japanese version).[25] If a l'Cie does complete his or her Focus, the reward is not much better: permanent transformation into a crystal. For this reason, being chosen as a l'Cie is seen as a curse.

I love it when I can continue playing a game after I beat it. But I don't like how FFXIII is doing it.
The level cap really disturbs me. I love to grind in my jrpg's and get overpowered.   :'(

The graphics in this game are really good though. And I like the battle system. The battles have been very easy so far. I think I've only got 4stars twice. The rest all 5 stars.

Still looks epic to me, definite purchase. Might wait a week or two though, pick it up cheap off some disgruntled haters.

I'm in chapter 8 now. My feelings are still roughly the same ones I posted yesterday.

Chapter 7 was the first legit "good" chapter but since that's the first one I would term that, we haven't exactly had a great batting average.

Hmmm... The frame rate in chapter 8 on the 360 seems to have gone into the toilet.

As a general note, some people say how wonderful this game looks and at parts it does, but at other parts in general it looks quite average. The cgi videos are consistently of high quality (outside of the 360 fuzz issue) but the actual game graphics can vary quite a bit.

I think coming out so late in the gen hasn't helped with my impressions of the graphics or something.

Edit: Looks like the frame rate issues were just for one particular section of the level.

Not really, X got 6/10 and X-2 got 7/10. They loved XII to death but I think that was more how they thought it felt like a single player MMO if that makes sense.

It's so surprising and weird that Sazh as a character redeems some of the cheese that exists in this story. It's just strange how much better designed and voice acted a character he is...

spoiler (click to show/hide)
Reached the part where he gets his Eidolon. That and his preceding work in the prior scene along with Vanille was surprisingly strong and emotional.

he's the only character that feels remotely real in the game so far.  the rest are a bunch of fucking preoccupied emo twats...besides Vanille.  She's just...she has the mind of a 5 year old, literally.

which is weird, because all signs pointed to Sazh being the stereotypical token black guy used for comic relief.

Yeah oddly enough he is one of the best "black" characters I've ever seen in a videogame before mainly because they stick to a real characterization and they got a good voice actor. He's not black because they want to crack black jokes or play into some stereotypes. His race doesn't matter at all which is a nice thing and unheard of in most mediums of entertainment.

He's clearly the most "real" character in this game. Not that every character necessarily has to be realistic but it is a nice change of pace and surprising in this context.

I'm probably the only who likes all the cast members thus far, even Vanille in her severe simplicity.

Stopping for tonight at the beginning of chapter 9. For what its worth I also enjoyed chapter 8.

Pro-Tip to Square Enix. For future games don't wait to start making your game interesting and worth playing halfway through the game. Those first 15 or 20 hours aren't supposed to be utterly painful and an endurance trial in any game.

I'll admit it gets better. I'm not going to exaggerate and say its now awesome because its not. It still has a lot of the same flaws from early in the game nor does it getting better excuse being bad for so long. But the game and story and characterization starts to pick up further down the road.

It's weird. I like the battle system but not because I think its very strategic or deep but just because its fast. It takes something that you're doing thousands of time and reduces it to a quick fairly painless exercise that looks flashy. In other games the battles become tedious because they take so long. Its sort of like they took the approach of saying fuck coming up with some really deep and strategic system. People want something fairly simple and quick. And that is what this combat system delivers. In that specific context I think it was the right call. Not every game or even every FF should have a combat system like this but I don't have a problem with this combat system especially for this game.

that's kinda the big insult.  it's just ok.  not anything special.  hell, it's hard coming up with anything to say about the game, since everyone is having the exact same experience with it. People who don't play FFXIII can't get a good idea of the quality of the game.

Everyone thought they were going to hate it going in based on all the information out there.  The same information you have right now.
Yet, 70-80% of the people playing it like it.  If you played it, you might like it as well.
There's zero point in hating on this game until you have played it.  There is literally no other game in the world like FFXIII for better or worse.

If you had told young me that in 2010 Final Fantasy 13 would cost $60, wouldn't get good until around 15ish hours in and that people would be ok with that I would have kicked you in the junk.  smh @ the low standards around here.

There is literally no other game in the world like FFXIII for better or worse.

yet it feels like a very boiled down version of just about any JRPG, but with a unique battle system.

I'm black and Sazh is my favorite character in the game.

You have to have skin the layer of a sheet to be offended by Sazh. He's the straight man, the most realistic character and just charming in general.

If you're black and you like Sazh, you are a race traitor.  He has a bird living in his gigantic afro.  That is an insult on the dignity of all peoples of African descent.

Um is this game worth getting if you go by the battle system alone?
