Picked up a Japanese 3DS LL, mainly for Senran Kagura 2 next week and Smash in September.  Already got Outrun and Afterburner II from the eShop...are there any other Japanese-only titles worth checking out?  Don't care about RPGs.

you know recently i found a channel that stream random episode of AVGN and i have to say that i really enjoy his video, it's kind of a shame he stopped making new one because as far as "PEOPLE PLAYING AND SAYING THINGS ABOUT VIDYAGAME!" he was one of the best

Project Mirai games, even though the second one is coming to the US later this year. Only other games I can think of are the DQ games (maybe the Rocket Slime game since it's not really an RPG?) and Beyond the Labyrinth but those of course are RPGs.

I gave AC IV another chance.  I'm pleasantly surprised.  I don't have to tear down wanted posters anymore (yet).  I fucking hated that addition to the games.  And the assassin mechanics work quite well when you're boarding ships and whatnot.  The scenery change is also nice.  It works well with the game and isn't terrible like 3.  This will probably be the first one I finish since 2.

Square Enix announced their Gamescom line-up this morning, and mentioned in their press release that the smartphone version of Dragon Quest IV: Chapters of the Chosen will be released in the West.

Dragon Quest IV: Chapters of the Chosen on smartphones is a port of the Nintendo DS remake of the game. It includes the extra content from that version, such as the bonus story chapter. It also has a quick save feature and five combat speed options.

The game will be released for both iOS and Android devices.

Other games that Square is taking to Gamescom include: Kingdom Hearts HD 1.5 Remix, Lara Croft and the Temple of Osiris, Theatrhythm Final Fantasy: Curtain Call, Dragon Quest VIII for smartphones, Nosgoth and Final Fantasy XIV: A Realm Reborn.

Um. If they're putting DQIV on smartphones chances are they may be working on a dq7 mobile port. Magus, they're going in sequential order, starting from 1 and now they're on IV when it comes to ios ports. You think they're just going to let 7 sit after all the effort remaking it?

No I am because I'm importing it

and Oscar, I know the first 8 games are coming to mobile, which is what I meant, and S-E would be silly to not port over DQ7 3ds. And S-E west would be silly to not translate it. My opinion though, but it's not likely to happen.

even assuming something like this happen (which if it's going to happen it's not going to happen soon anyway) you can rest assured the people crying "WAAAAAAAHHHHHHHH WHERE IS THE 3DS VERSION? WHY SQUARE-ENIX FORGOT US?" are going to be there and are going to be deafening, you'd think at this point people would have already reached the acceptance phase instead of being stuck at the anger one

*ahem*

Nice job throwing DQ fans under the bus again with this, Square Enix. Is VII going to be mobile phone only here too? I'm boycotting them for good if they keep pulling this garbage. I'm surprised people even WANT this, because buying it won't give us the 3DS games or DQX but more stupid churned out mobile crap with awful portrait resolution and terrible scaling. If they troll us this way on DQVII there's gonna be blood.

See if Medarot/Medabots Dual is something you like. The game was massively overshipped so you can get it really cheap from Play-Asia ($12 for Kuwagata). While the other games in the series are RPGs, this one is an action title.

edit: Looking at that recommended list from Play-Asia, maybe pick up Gaist Crusher too. It's developed by Treasure and it's only $10.

There's quite a few people there in Austin who my buddy knows and the saddest part is the guys affected were the most loyal to the company. All the smart ones jumped ship a couple of months back once Crytek discontinued payments and cut insurance. One of the shitty things is this reconfirms Austin as Homeless GameDev capital of the US.

I've been in the industry long enough to know that once there's a fluctuation in payment things are going south and it's best to start looking around ASAP. It's a lesson I learned myself the hard way, lol.

yeah, the comment about the first 8 coming was directed towards magoose and agreeing with you, just pointing out that they're not going sequential by any means.  i'm not nearly as confident about them using the 3ds version of dq7 nor the game getting an English version.  it's going to depend on how well the other DQ games do in English, since DQ7 needs a top to bottom re-localization and it's a very, very big job.

Wasn't the person who used to hint about these things hinting that both DQ7 and even DQ10 were being worked on at least, quite a while ago?

I only played a little bit of it.  There doesnt seem to be a custom combo system.  Also all there seems to be are corridors, stairs and small areas.  You dont get items any more, there doesnt seem to be any inventory as such.  Think Golden Axe type game top down, with specials mapped to the L & R buttons.

God damn you, Joe. <.<

I've looked at some German reviews and apparently it really is just a co-op brawler now. With painful voice acting and nonsensical humour. "I enjoy plotting revenge once I've had some fish fingers." :wtf "My people once captured three ports and a Chihuaha, but we gave them back. Except for the Chihuaha." :picard

John Walker hates it too.

Quote
Extraordinarily, in a move that strikes me as about the most foolish choice imaginable, this latest entry to the series has ditched any sense of gathering loot, and even the inventory. Instead, downed enemies will now only reward you with showers of health or energy orbs, and tiny scraps of gold (used to unlock skills). That core of Action RPGs, the compulsive, adorable chase for improved swords, hats and potions, is entirely gone. And replaced by nothing. Sacred 3 perhaps isn’t an ARPG. It’s a sort of nothingy-space.

so recently SNK has filled a lawsuit against square-enix

http://www.siliconera.com/2014/08/06/snk-filed-criminal-lawsuit-square-enix-copyright-infringement/

the reason is for a manga called high-score girl, i actualy got curious and checked this because i tought it was just SNK being stupid but to my surprise, it's not just a brief citation or something like a parody, real SNK games get mentioned and shown, the plot follows a nerdy gamer guy and his obssesion with various arcade games (mostly street fighter 2) somehow his arcade obssesion lead him to develop a friendship with a rich ojou-sama and it start as a somewhat comedy/romantic manga, then bad stuff happens and it becomes super depressing! still i found it interessing as the plot goes through several gaming years, and the nerdy guy is a pc-engine freak so instead of the usual nintendo stuff, you get to see lot of namco and hudson games instead

apparently it was going to become an anime but i guess now that SNK has filled lawsuit it's not going to happen anymore, is this lawsuit logical anyway? it would be like if steven spielberg sued somebody publishing a movie that actualy shown somebody watching indiana jones... seems like a pretty dumb reason

Another franchise EA ruins:

http://modthesims.info/showthread.php?t=530479

The morale for Sims fans now is at an all time low. Even on the official forums which is usually full of people who have incredibly low standards. Even they're not buying into this.

Thanks for giving me all of Sims 2 for free, EA. It's the GOAT Sims game, so now I have all of it complete - for free - and now I don't have to buy your wannabe Sims game.

The Sims is a life sim series you dork. Or used to be anyways. In life you are not born with a cell phone. In life, you have to work your way to be able AFFORD a phone. In life, you have to go to the store to restock your food supplies. They don't automatically reappear in your refrigerator like they do now. More than that, again, The Sims is a life simulator and giant sandbox. What if you want to create a setting where your characters start from the bottom and work your way up? All they have to their name is a park bench to sleep on, with no toilet, bed, or shelter. You want to make them grow as people, from rags to maybe slightly less riches. But whoops. They already come with a smartphone! With that they'll be able to play games and watch tv on it and call people without going out of their way to find a phone. In one fell swoop EAMAXIS have essentially killed what the Sims' essence primarily is: a dollhouse for which you use to tell your own stories and situations.

I'm not sure you have played the Sims if you don't understand why all sims coming with a smartphone may be an issue with people who play the game. That, or you have a very small imagination.

Also, that's only one thing people have issues with. They have stripped a lot of features.

Quote
They borked the life stages and cut the toddlers.
They cut pools.
They cut landscaping tools.
They don't even have a color wheel.
Weirder™ careers.
Emotions are not as great as they're making them out to be.
No more open world.
Fake homes/towns surrounding your neighborhood.
Not being able to customize the worlds/neighborhoods.
Consolizing the PC game.
Incoming micro transactions/DLC on steroids.

That's enough for me. Or I should I say too much.

Quote
The Sims 4 is no longer a life simulation game, as everybody expected it to be...
There are 2 life stages: child and teen-YA-adult-elder. Babies don't count, because they're basically objects. And they left toddlers out.
No normal careers, only wierd stuff nobody (except for, maybe, 12 year olds) cares about.
Smartphone makes playing too easy. Why can't we go back to TS2 style cellphones?
No good genetics, I guess.
Buggy emotion system.
Too much unlockable content in-game. Well, it made sense for career and aspiration rewards, which were not essencial for playing TS2... But for completely regular objects, with just a different style, well... That's a bummer.
The return of TS3 style memories (I guess) and aspiration rewards.
Ridiculous aspirations which made the game goal-oriented, unlike TS2's, which just defined the wants/fears and lifetime wish. The TS4's set goals to complete, literally.
Did I mention that babies are objects?
Build mode with some funny restrictions (no pools, no split leveling, annoying to remove singular floor tiles, no ceilling paint, foundations restrict construction, only 3 floors...)
No translation for my dialect
Good UI rules broken (messy, vertical text, meh)
Giant microscope... It may be funny and ironic, but I want a regular one, if it'd be possible
Astronauts. Everywhere.
60€ to 70€ depending on the version (it was a right price for TS2 and TS3 at launch, but not for this)
Rushed game due to time constraints (most likely hypothesis)
Wierd skills
Wierd stories TM
Forced humor
A Live mode lesson about BUGS
Hair could be better sculped and textured (as proven by some of the best hairstyles)
Teens are no longer a unique life stage
No swimming at all in the game
Good gardening, which could be replaced by something REALLY useful, and be better implemented lately in a seasons EP
I expect too much DLC (I mean, I'm not obligated to buy it, but I guess some essential features will be implemented as such)
Tiny usable worlds
Ridiculous story line with no purpose (TS2's had the purpose of teaching new players how to handle different situations)

A wise poster in the smartphone thread expounds even more real talk on this.

Quote
I hated the smartphones in TS3 because it was another way of EA dictating how I was supposed to play the game.

I had a technophobe sim dressed in full-on 18th century garb who freaked out (=received a negative moodlet) whenever she saw a television set but never freaked out when she (autonomously) pulled out her smartphone to stream cat videos. Ugh.

I'm not sure. Pre-hype is starting to be reminiscent of Sim City. While that games always online is bad, the dumbed down gameplay is why people gave it the finger ultimately, and everything is indicating this will happen in Sims 4. Even the official forums, which always has people who are like WELL IF YOU DON'T LIKE IT, DON'T BUY IT. There are definitely Sims players who like what they see, and are buying the game, but they seem way in the minority so far. But of course, given that this is the internet, it's not like any of this is fully predictable. The more hardcore sites like MTS are definitely full on hate mode. Places like Reddit are totally fine with it, but reddit's sims subreddit is small as shit. Official forums (which is huge) has 76 page threads like this:

http://forum.thesims3.com/jforum/posts/list/759976.page

More than that, I too, am part of Sims's target demo.

edit: :rofl The Sims 4 has less than 100,000 pre-orders? :rofl :trash Sims fan-base is tired of it. Sims 3 was a giant disappointment for many, Sim City was :trash and our fanbase tends to overlap, combined with TS4 apathy/hate/fury. :rofl EA! :lol

I finally got my ps3 repaired after having it busted for years. first thought was: why tf did I spend money to fix this :-( the os sucks ass bad as ever, the store is even worse, and for some reason I was under the completely wrong assumption that there was a good amount of quality exclusives that I missed out on. instead I look through yalls trophy lists and see multiplat titles and shitty feel-based indie exclusives.

I spent the morning playing ports of ffx, sotc, and mgs :-/

SOME games dont have trophy lists, like Valkyria Chronicles.

Unless you played that then nevermind
