This was one of the last corporate conversations I had. :heh

Player 1: Is anyone at [BASENAME]? Are they still camping us?
Me: Nah I'm not at our base, I'm on the other side of the universe running missions right now.
Player 2: [tedious chatter that lasts minutes]
Player 2: So [Karakand], where exactly is "the other side of the universe"?
Me: Comms aren't secure, sorry.  :hitler

*cue a couple of /tells from newbies going :ohhh*

Editor's Note: Because our corporation was at war, I could be attacked anywhere in the galaxy with no ramifications by members of our mysterious bete noires (if you attack people in high security space--where I was running missions at the time--without a corporate declaration of war it's generally not advisable, but with one the fuzz are like :badass). If I had divulged my location I would have easily been hunted down.

New Eden is the perfect place for someone who trusts no one. I can't think of a better place to quit on life. :rejoice

Kapitan Karakand's EVE Chronicles Episode 0.2 - "Don't Forget to Read the Fine Print"

spoiler (click to show/hide)
Stardate A.C. 195

During a DUST 514 podcast I listen to on the reg there was a discussion about the people who fly the most bling ships in EVE; turns out they're mission runners and not corporate samurais fighting war after war with other neckbeards for digital real estate. It makes sense to a certain degree. Anyway, I've decided this is my true calling. Not only can I ball hard, but I can be decidedly anti-social in a game that's supposed to be social.

The consequence of this? I'm even more off-put by being hustled to join a corporation. Thank Slaanesh I'm not a woman irl, I don't think I could ever handle real, actual thirst.

Today I'm blowing spacerats up with my new flying dildo that shoots a fuckton of missiles when I get a recruitment email.

Quote
Hey [Karakand], I noticed you're still in an NPC corporation. You know you pay a ton of taxes to that corporation for nothing in return right? (We presume the recruiter didn't know we live in America and are used to this sort of thing. -ed.)

Come join our corporation! Your tax rate is ONLY 5%. (This is approximately 50% of our current corporate tax rate. -ed.)

We're a newbie friendly corporation and we show you how to go into no security space where you can make BILLIONS of ISK!

:iface

Having learned my lesson about corporations that prey on newbies in episode 0.1, I started looking at this corporation.

:comeon

Yeah, I'm definitely going to fly into no security space with a friendly fire corporation. :heh

I didn't bother to transcribe the email verbatim, but there were peculiar formatting errors. Errors that only appeared around the corporation's name. i.e. The name was copy pasted into a saved email.

So apparently FFVII remake is actually happening?

A third large scale project from a company that seems like it can barely handle one at a time?  :holeup I'm guessing this is going to be of substantially lower budget than FFXV and KH3, or it's going to come out no sooner than 2020

Still, I've never played FF7 so I am looking forward to this.

not sure how their engine works, what the state of the original assets are etc. but it would be sweet if they just up rez the original backgrounds, give the characters new models, mash some version of the paradigm system in there and make levelling materia a mini game. whatever happens i just want it to be controversial, no doubt there will be many tears involving this sacred cow before all is said and done.

It's unlikely they would ever work directly from the original assets with as much manpower and "free overtime" as Squeenix enjoys.

Yeah, there's no way they've still got the original assets. But developers like inXile and Obsidian have proven that games with prerendered HD backgrounds can be made in the modern era at relatively low cost.

But I doubt this remake [if it exists] will have prerendered backgrounds.

my understanding is many/most of the FF7 "prerendered" backgrounds weren't actually generated from 3D models, but were made in 2D using Photoshop etc.

Kapitan Karakand's EVE Chronicles Episode 0.3 - "Double Secret Indemnity"

spoiler (click to show/hide)
I found a lucrative noobie system. And by lucrative I mean the missions hand out skill books (what you use in lieu of RPG experience points) and Merlins like candy--things I've been #struggling to pay for since I started playing. :goty2

Anyway, a few of these missions involve sacrificing a ship to complete the objective. Now it could be "hold out as long as you can" or "LARP Mohamed Atta," but your ship is always going to ass-plode by the end of the mission. Since this is a newbie zone the NPCs give you the ships to sacrifice to the glory of the "State" for free.

Before I flew my first mission I was like, hold up, you're GIVING me a free ship? That's going to get destroyed for certain on this mission? Can I buy insurance on these? :hitler

Well friends it turns out you can in fact buy insurance on a ship you didn't pay for whose destruction is all but guaranteed. Insurance that pays out when that guaranteed destruction takes place.

Pocketed a couple hundo thousand ISK for pennies on the.......... ISK. :miyamoto

I feel like I'm being too harsh on it but the problem I keep coming back to is that this is coming from a highly regarded developer and he's sold a large group of people a bill of goods that isn't to the same level of quality as other games in the market.

I guess to answer your question; I don't think it's recoverable. On a fundamental level the game feels like it was made by amateurs. The direction was to clearly mimic Mega Man as much as possible but it plays poorly in comparison and has none of the production values or artistic quality you'd expect from a recent release. I wasn't exaggerating about my student project comment. I have personally played superior fan-made Mega Man clones that looked/played better and was created just to be part of someone's portfolio.

I just see a game like Freedom Planet, which was made on a shoestring budget by guys who never made a game before but yet completely nail the retro gameplay, then look at Mighty No. 9 and wonder what the fuck happened.

The project is already a success and I think overall this will probably be received well. It fills a niche that no one is servicing. I just have a very specific perspective.

In any-case I'll be buying it because I want to support them and Comcept!

Haven't played PW, but all the talk of "Fulton" and "Mother Bases" to be designed make it clear they took some pointers from it. Also the game is supposedly long as hell, like JRPG long, so yeah... grinding.
I think MGS needed a good shake up and maybe breaking the linearity was the way, but this not bodes too well.

Combat was kinda 'ehh'... basically Paper Mario with all semblance of balance thrown out the window and a much more limited moveset. And some questionable controls for environmental actions... I really liked the game but that's because I'm a big fan of the show, and the game has both heaps of fanservice and scenarios that wouldn't be out of place in the actual TV show. I'd imagine there's not too much to offer if you're not a fan of SP though...

Cracked and installed the Daemon Tools Lite version listed in this guide: http://emulation.gametechwiki.com/index.php/SSF#Free_Virtual_Drive_Software

Was so paranoid, I even cut my router off during installation  :brazilcry

So far so good though...no toolbars or nothing (even though it lists the program as Daemon Tools Toolbar in my program list for some reason  >:() but nothing malicious has happened nor shown up in Firefox or my hard drive. Nothing has slowed down and the HDD indicator light isn't going berzerk...I think I'm good.

I've been down that road before and I don't want to go back  :'(

Anyway, SSF works like a charm now  :hyper :hyper :hyper :hyper :hyper
