was reading an old thing by jason rubin, he said when they first showed crash at e3 a lot of people were still confused and would go the wrong directions, backwards or try to go into the scenery and stuff but miyamoto wandered over, instantly figured out the controls and blew through the levels dominating

What's the best way to get Dreamcast to output VGA on a modern TV?

Tried a Retro-Bit VGA cable and I flushed $13 down the drain  :snoop

Just a plain VGA<>HDMI adapter?

edit: I meant is that what you got is?
You need a VGA box. Sega made official ones but there were a whole bunch of 3rd party ones too.

I tried this since I have VGA ports on 2 TVs and my computer monitor

Didn't work on any of them. Grabbed it because I saw decent reviews from multiple sites. I'm guessing this cable is bunk because if my TVs can take not only my old DC composite cable, but my PS2 running in 480i via component, 480p over VGA shouldn't be too hard considering they have the ports to begin with.

Not even gonna bother trying another or getting a refund (not worth the cost to send back). I guess I'll try one of those $60-80 boxes...if they ever come back in stock.  :-\ https://www.beharbros.com/products

Did you try multiple games? Pretty sure some aren't compatible with VGA mode.

Crazy thing is I remember reading nothing but mediocre impressions during early access. I hyped before I saw that. But then the reviews have been really positive so it looks like it really just was in early access development and the final polished version came through in the end.

Definitely gonna play this at some point. Loved the old games as kids.

Nah, the cable didn't show up at all once plugged in. No signal at all on anything.

From some google searching of those specific cables it looks like those cables might be "upbranded" Chinese crap that's missing the ground and you need a ~$7-10 adapter to provide it:
Quote
I'm not sure what the "Retro Cast" VGA cable is - if I look for it all I find are the Retro-Bit ones, and those look like they're the same as the generic Chinese ones. Those are missing the ground connection for some reason, though the only monitor I've found that doesn't like that is my ancient ~20 year old VGA CRT which displays a rolling picture or "no sync". If you have a device with a VGA pass-through you could try running the VGA connection through that as they often join all the ground pins together.

I know you probably don't want to throw any more money at the problem but I can vouch for the cheap MINI VGA2HDMI devices. They get the aspect ratio slightly wrong but otherwise work fine in conjunction with the cheap Chinese Dreamcast VGA cables. It would be worth double checking that your TV supports 640x480 first, though.

IIRC, you can also do this with a video card/laptop that has the proper ports. I seem to remember a run on some like $20 garbage ATI cards a few years back because they had them (for video capture or something normal) and were cheaper than the boxes.

Never played the first one. Is this a pure platformer or some kind of genre mix?

I bought that Ratchet and Clank remake during a PSN sale a while ago hoping for some nice platforming action but to my disappointment it played more like an action adventure than anything else.

Stumbled across Ruiner having Hirasawa Susumu tracks. Was like hollllyyyyy shiiiit how did that happen and looked into it and they just licensed some old tracks to use, which is still cool but man if they had gotten Hirasawa to write a track or two for the game that would've been stellar.

tbh i really can't stand the bitching over loot boxes. reminds me of when people howled at the introduction of dlc. seems like it's a bunch of whiny nerds complaining that they want something for free or that they want it to be easy to obtain. there's just this constant undercurrent of "how DARE they charge me!" whenever a developer adds in some optional pay content and it's really annoying and comes off as entitled. just ignore it and play the damn game, or cough up the cash if you really can't live with that extra character skin or whatever.

Lootboxes when done poorly are fucking awful, don't get me wrong, but the people whining about it are the extreme minority. It's actually hilarious just how one-sided that argument is. Lootboxes are a major profit center.

I don't like 'em myself though, no thanks. :yuck

IMO this is some bullshit tbh.

Loot boxes are an entirely artificially created concept in modern "AAA" games. They're taking the inherent concept of loot from treasure chests from Diablo and Borderlands and forcefully shoving it in games that it doesn't belong in. These games are started to be tuned to steer you in that direction. They wouldn't be putting them in the game in the first place if they didn't expect you to shell out a few dollars here and there. It's super shitty and invasive seeing how they're trying to siphon more money out of people who are already spending 60-90 bucks on a video game.

You and I may be able to ignore it but we're not everyone. And this shit is clearly only beginning, I wouldn't be surprised if it wasn't in every major release next year.

oh it will be in everything soon, but my point is it's easy to ignore. money for bigger games has to come from somewhere, so ofc they're going to put in stuff like this. but just like dlc or paid powerups or f2p gatcha it'll be possible to pay the game just fine while ignoring the other stuff if you don't want it. i don't see what the problem is except that people want the stuff for free.

seems like I struck a nerve lol

I can't argue against specific dlc vs crates bc yeah, it sucks as an alternative. my main point tho, is that I disagree with "unlockables barely exist anymore" bc games are so much bigger than they ever were. huge quests are buffed by side activities and quests, there's free updates to go with dlc, etc. remember when we used to complain about 30 ps1 games being too bloated? nowadays you wouldn't waste $60 on a game that short. and the way aaa games are designed, you can blaze thru the main quest and unlock all the areas of you want, or you can do all the side shit, climb all the tiers, get the dlc, and keep that shit going for like a solid year. so yeah it sucks that they put items behind a grab bag system, but it's ultimately irrelevant if you don't want to pay the extra cash because you'll still have a full game right there to play.

Scarface is actually a surprisingly fun open world game that got lost in the generational shuffle but I totally saw all kinds of bugs like this. :lol

Don't remember it looking that bad though, maybe it's because I have the Xbox version. Or maybe it's because it actually loaded in the textures.

Never knew it had a PC version.

Fuck lootboxes. If you did not buy that shit, it would not cost any money and would exist in a form that compliments gameplay design as to make it a fun activity instead of a money bait.

Or better yet, they would not exist at all because they are shit compared to other progression models.
