They need someone on their asses after how Saints Row 2022 turned out.   :doge

But they haven't folded (yet?)- right now they've switched publishers from the German-based Deep Silver to the U.S.-based Gearbox.  But there's gotta be more to it otherwise why would Embracer bother doing this?

Black Friday discounts are trash so far around these parts.
Gotham Knights for 40 is probably the best deal but that game sucks.

Apart from that it's the same games that have been on discount all year like LEGO City Undercover (which is a 'discount' at 30 and I remember it got as low as 5 on the Wii U) and GTA Trilogy, which is still riddled with bugs.

I was hoping for a deal on Live A Live or Final Fantasy Origin or something. Anything interesting really.

Pitchford has been shunted into a figurehead position at Embracer's Gearbox, his "portfolio" is technically the adaptations of their work like the upcoming Borderlands movie. He probably spends all his day writing and reading bad Duke Nukem scripts.

Apart from that it's the same games that have been on discount all year like LEGO City Undercover (which is a 'discount' at 30 and I remember it got as low as 5 on the Wii U)
LEGO City Undercover is $20 not on sale on Steam, has been as low as $4 and in a bundle.

Found 2 ok'ish Black Friday deals.

GTA Trilogy for 17 Eurodollar (actually interested in replaying Vice City for a bit on the XBOX)
Tales of Vesperia: Definitive Edition for 10 Eurodollar (had this in my sights for a while, might as well get it on the XBOX)

It looks like NFS Heat with a shitty anime mod

I'll play the game pass trial, but my guess is that it ends up being a perfectly adequate open world racer with some annoying trimmings you can hopefully switch off.

I hooked up my PS3 again and this interface is sooooo bad and hard to go back to. Good luck if you need to delete some games to make space to install something. Sit for 20 mins deleting a game. 1 hour installing a game.

Why haven't they just ported every PS3 exclusive game at this point...

*edit* Though I'm glad to see my PS3 still works. Until PS3 emulation is at 100%, good to have a piece of working hardware for the stuff stuck on the system.
*edit2* Also man, the DS3 sticks fucking suck. Didn't realize how much DS4 improved the analogs to have some resistance.

Because I don't know rat shit from rice crispies when it comes to technical stuffz, how will this work?... Do I need to have the PS4 version downloaded and installed, and they patch it up?  Or is it a full PS5 version that will download seperately and will have seperate trophies and such?  Dumb delivery never makes this clear, and I can't find shit on the information super highway.  I went ahead and downloaded the PS4 version anyhow just in case.  What I really want from this is to play NG+.

I imagine it will work similar to cyberpunk and be separate thing, so so downloading it from the ps store will be the easiest solution. That what I did with cyberpunk and didn't have the fuck around other people did iirc.

You'll probably need to upload your PS4 save to their cloud or whatever like cyberpunk too. Tbf I don't think ng+ adds much to the game other than having the money to go to skellige straight away the way I remember it and I wouldn't be shocked if they overhauled the loot/inventory system in some way :trumps

Probably right. Had to completely dl CP PS5, load up the PS5 one, save it's own file from my PS4 save, then was able to delete the PS4 version afterwards.  I haven't loaded up my game since finishing Blood and Wine, but as far as I got, I still had plenty of moves/skills I never got around to unlocking.  Plus I don't want to go through the Witcher gear quests again.  Want them shits on hand when starting up.

As frustrating as this cross-gen has been, I'll take the tediousness of it (for now) if devs are going to put the effort into improving them.  Hope this one will be one of the better ones.
They're supposed to have a showcase this week on the Twitch channel.
Reading now this should be tomorrow.  Been getting pumped for this!

I've been reading the bitmap books guide to jrpgs for the last year or so. Just pick it up here and there and read a few more entries. I was reading the entry on Mother 1/Earthbound Beginnings last night and it got me to look into it more.

I've played Earthbound/Mother 3, and I tried playing Mother 1 when it came to Wii U VC but the game was incredibly dated gameplay and not fun and I gave up. So I was reading up on the various versions. The original NES, the Wii U VC/Switch VC which is the same but with a run button, the GBA version that's rebalanced for the better with the easy ring but has shit sound, the 25th anniversary romhack which is a middleground retuning between the original and GBA but with homemade ugly sprites. And various romhacks to play the original NES version with the easy ring and various tweaks. It's super complicated and there's no real definitive version.

However, the most interesting thing I got out of reading and watching vids of all that when I couldn't sleep last night, was I'd always heard people bitch about how GBA has terrible sound, but I never really noticed it until now.  Goddamn, the NES tunes from Mother 1 on GBA sound absolutely atrocious. I guess this is why people never liked the GBA FF4/5/6 even though otherwise they were pretty definitive versions until the new Pixel Remasters. Man, how was the sound on GBA so horrible.

It's too bad because if the sound wasn't horrid, I'd give Mother 1 another shot with the GBA version. I still kinda want to try to play through it for the dialogue/story stuff and music and completionist side, but I think maybe I'd end up playing the original NES with a rom hack that includes the easy ring and a few tweaks. The 25th Anniversary rom hack sprites look whack and some people dislike the balance changes they did.

Vids:

In other random gaming talk, I hooked up my PS3 yesterday because there was a thread on era about how Lost Planet EX Troopers is apparently a great-ass action game and the best game in the Lost Planet series. I ignored it when it came out because it looked dumb and anime and the PS3 version was just an upressed 3DS game. Never paid attention and found out it's apparently like Vanquish/Bayonetta hot shit action quality. It's only like $15 these days for an import PS3 copy so I grabbed one and wanted to make sure my PS3 still worked.

After getting the PS3 working I looked at my PS3 backlog I still have sitting around. If you only count stuff that was never ported off the PS3, it's pretty small basically just:

-Tales of Xillia 1 (dropped it like 7 hours in)
-Tales of Xillia 2
-Resistance 3
-Killzone 3
-Drakengard 3
-Disgaea D2

That's pretty much it. So for the hell of it since I haven't played an FPS game in years and was curious I popped in Resistance 3. Man, that is one hell of an ugly game. Even at 4k internal rendering/60fps on PCSX3 it all looks like muddy shit. Resistance 3 looks like how PS2 FPS games look in my memories. It also reminded me that it's weird how Sony completely gave up on FPS games after the PS4 launch with Killzone. All their 1st party stuff is TPS now. I'm surprised they don't try to have at least one major 1st party FPS IP.

Now on PS3 it's like 720p 30fps with some awful motion blur that feels even worse. I don't remember if all PS3 games looked this awful or if its just Resistance 3. Idk. I also wonder how we played and beat FPS games like this back in the day because man that stuff makes it hard to aim, especially with the DS3.

But for whatever reason I was sorta having fun with the goofy weapons. I got the one that lets you wallhack and that's great.
I'll probably stick with this and finish R3 up finally. Kinda tempted to go through Tales of Xillia 1 before I unhook the system again.

I suspect sonys FPS woes were partly down to the dual shock 3 being kind of a shitty controller for shooters. which funnily enough they fixed with the ds4 but their game template was pretty much set at that point too.

Resistance 3 is a lot of fun (if you ignore the worthless story). Played it for the first time a few years ago. I would say that even by PS3 standards it looks and performs like ass. You get used to it pretty quick though.

I didn't enjoy Killzone 2. Like you said, it has its fans but I never got it. It was ugly and tuned pretty hard difficulty-wise. Nothing really stood out besides the setting. I played through KZ4 during the PS4 launch and it was a serviceable FPS that looked nice (and the color was a good improvement from the dull look of the older games), but also totally forgettable.

I did enjoy Resistance 1 and 2 at the time of release. Don't remember much about them other than the first game was pretty tough.

Picked up Gotham Knights on Steam.  Got the deluxe version discounted.  Probably didn't need the deluxe content, but those beyond suits are nice.

Have tried it on two platforms so far:

Steam Deck:
-The game runs with a proton experimental update that downloads when you install.  Change compatibility and it works.
-I limited the screen to 40hz and FPS to 40.  The game defaulted to pretty much all low settings.  Was initially getting 34-40 fps, but once I got outside, it started dipping and was generally around 27-34 fps.  Still felt pretty playable.
-Got on the bike and started driving around.  Framerate tanked and went into the teens.  Felt really bad.
-The game crashed when a real-time cut scene triggered about an hour in.

Desktop PC:
-For reference, this is a 'monster' gaming machine with a 3080, 64 GB of ram, etc.  Can handle everything thrown at on the highest settings.  Have it hooked up to an LG C1 for 4K 120hz gaming.
-Put everything at max settings at 4K with DLSS on performance- the game stuttered and chugged like mad as soon as I stepped outside into the city map.  Felt absolutely unplayable.
-Turned off raytracing and everything was buttery smooth.
-Tried turning raytracing back on and limited FPS to 60- still stuttered like mad.
-Turned down the max FPS to 30 with raytracing on and it felt much more playable, but I'd prefer to have the smoother framerate with raytracing off if that's the main issue right now.

I need to enable the Steam FPS counter to check, but while it's not consistent, it's got to be staying at well above 60 FPS with raytracing off.  Doesn't feel like it's dipping any lower than that.

No idea if a day one patch of any kind was added before this released, but if not, I question why seemingly none of the people who got early PC review copies didn't try messing with the settings more.  Also saw one person on the Steam discussion group say that forcing the game to run in DX11 mode improves performance a lot as well.

Nice, I'm on Steam Beta with Proton Experimental. Might try this out when it hits $20.

Was killzone ever any good, I played some of 2 and the PS4 one and thought they were piss poor games, 2 in particular seems to have its fans, but was that just ponies lying to themselves? I genuinely don't know.

Killzone had so much hype surrounding it as the "Halo killer" at the time and it just fell flat on its face.

Never cared much for the console games, but Killzone Liberation (PSP overhead run n' gun) and Killzone mercenary (Vita FPS) were fun.  I think both of them had different developers from the console games?

Mercenary had shorter missions that worked in its favor and at the time, was easily the best portable multiplayer FPS, not that there was much else, but still.  You could even play the game with a PS3 controller on the PSTV.

Hope you enjoy it as a fan. I've heard some good, and a lot of bad about it.

Supposedly the set pieces are very, very good. And combat is decent even if it's not Arkham combat. And story stuff is good. It's just everything else is a mess apparently. I've played all the Arkham games, but even when this is like $5 idk if I'll play it.

I also played KZ2 for for the first time a few years ago (not counting the demo which I played like 20 times back in the day lol). I also quite enjoyed it. They really nailed the feeling of all out war, and it looks pretty good by 2009 standards. Can’t imagine being that fun on anything higher than the standard difficulty though. Especially not that sack of shit final boss  :yuck

I played the original on the PS2, but didn’t like it enough to bother finishing it, and I used to finish almost everything back then! 3 came “free” with my PS3 slim after my 80 GB MGS4 PS3 died when I was playing FFXIII :goldberg. I played it in split screen with my brother. It was fun to shoot the shit that way, but not interesting enough to revisit enough by myself. Never played the PS4 or Vita games.

The real best KZ game is Liberation on the PSP. That game was sick. I’d kill for a sequel or spiritual successor.

I definitely played Killzone 1 on PS2 but don't remember it at all. The only FPS that sticks out from PS2-era was Criterion's Black.

Criterion used to be great at making everything fun. Shame where they've ended up.

Playing Ragnarok makes me wonder when developers started calling half their games "optional" so that a good % of players can just skip half the game. It's very weird to me as someone that takes their time and basically 100%s every game. I can't imagine in most games just skipping all the optional content.

Thoough there are games where the optional content tends to be a lot worse than the main game *cough*cough*Bayonetta3*cough* and you get a way better experience if you don't do it.

I never owned a PS3 or played any games on it

when I think of that gen for some reason what sticks in my head is the game about koreans invading america where the cover has a blindfolded guy, and the game about soldiers taking too many drugs and the cover has a guy with a yellow mask with his eye showing

I don't know why these mediocrities stand out to me all these years later

Apparently the director of GOW:R has been showing massive desire to do a Castlevania next, if Konami would allow it...
