Because I'm facing the end of my time at this company and having to gear up for another big change in my life, it's making me very hopeful that such things are even possible.

12 hour work days + 6 hour sleep + no caffeine = I AM NOW TIRED

They force me to go to lunch for an hour at the new job. I sat in the car today, texted Mups and browsed EB until I got to the 45 min mark and couldn't take it anymore. Thank god the workload is heavy.

Because I'm facing the end of my time at this company and having to gear up for another big change in my life, it's making me very hopeful that such things are even possible. 

Man, it was one of the best things that ever happened to me. I hope in a few months you can say the same. I'm way healthier, I have time/energy to cook yummy, healthy meals and work out, and I see my friends and family on the weekends and holidays. It's sad that eating, sleeping, my health and seeing people I care about were severely affected for so long, but it led to a cushy job with an awesome boss who doesn't have a jump to conclusions mat he rolls out on the daily to scream at me over something I never did or was planning to do like my last psychopathic boss.

15 hour workdays? Where was this?

If you want luxuries like eating and sleeping, do not take a management position at a tax accountant company with 20 locations. I've had this phone two years, and only used it for work for 6 months of each year... 39 days call time when I left the company. So 20+ days every tax season I was on my personal cell or an office phone answering questions and dealing with problems, all while driving hundreds of miles per day in my own car to fix said problems.


"Oh you guys want me to leave at 5 AND take an hour lunch? Can I at least work from home? Yes, but I need to clock in to get OT? Well darn, ok..." What a crazy transition.

Yeah, the worst place I was at in the games industry so far, when my wife became pregnant with our first kid, the general manager had HR tell me there was no such thing as "paternity leave" -- which is actually covered under FMLA, as I found out with less than 15 minutes of research. So... assuming that HR and Legal were both aware of this federal law, they were lying to us.

When we asked the state labor board if we should inform the company that they were in violation of federal law, the labor board said, "No, just start collecting emails and documenting it. We prosecute cases like this."

Oddly enough, when we started trying to communicate in email, and they kept trying to answer verbally, it wasn't long before they "realized" the FMLA exists.

Sounds like that company should have hired more people. If you were clocking in for OT, then they were paying you for those hours, right? Wouldn't it have been cheaper for them to just get a bigger staff?

No, no OT at all. My new job is full time and still pays OT. They would have had to find someone with extensive knowledge about our systems as well as taxes due to the constant stream of phone calls and questions. And considering I did almost all the hiring too, there weren't many people we came across who could've picked it up as quickly as necessary. Even if someone could, no one in their right mind would take that job at that pay. They "promoted" me to that position, basically against my wishes, and switched me to salary immediately.

Wow @ chrono... FMLA is widely known, not some secret loophole. If a company is big enough to have an HR dept, they should know the ins and outs of FMLA. But I'm sure they were aware of it the entire time.

My roommate and I got swindled on this apartment we're renting.  I can hear every step someone makes on the floor above and hear every word over normal speaking volume.  And they have kids.  It's not bothering me much because I don't really come back here except to eat, tug, shower and sleep but my roommate is trying to study for his PT exams in the morning and evening and it's driving him nuts.

Having guests over is pretty embarrassing, though, I have to admit.

Anyway, for future reference, how is one supposed to know about that sort of thing when apartment hunting?  Of course, when we looked around lunch time, we didn't hear a peep, and the offices are closed after five.  Should we have arranged to see it late in the evening or something?

Not sure.  It was one of my biggest worries when apartment hunting.  I guess if you find a place you are set on, then going a few times at different times of days could work.  A lot of it seems to depend on luck of the draw.

What's the proper procedure for decent burns?

I just burned the side of my right hand/pinky/2nd finger's side with smoking burning hot oil when cooking a very tasty meal.  I put ice on it right away and it's mainly red with some huge chunks of puffed up white blister skin.  Right now it still fucking stings/burns; not sure if I should do anything else besides hope it stops burning when I wake up tomorrow.  I already took an advil.  I've been burned minorly before, but this is the first time I got burned to the point of immediate white blistering.

Sounds like a second degree burn.  Should run it immediately under cool (not cold) water for a few seconds.  Cover it with dry sterile dressing (not fluffy cotton) and leave it be.  Take some tylenol or advil and check in on it again in the morning.  You might want a second opinion though, cause I've been drinking a lot tonight and this may not even be coherent...
