Lol I just got a reminder on my phone that I have tix to a Laurie Anderson + Mike Patton vocal jazz concert in an hour. I don’t remember when I ordered these. This is a really strange event to get an unexpected reminder for. I guess I need to find some non-pvc clothing to put on

It is this: https://www.kqed.org/arts/13870490/hear-laurie-anderson-push-musical-boundaries-with-mike-patton

Quote
It's a pairing that feels fundamentally bizarre, but also somehow inevitable. She's an avant-garde artist who has dabbled with pop; he's an experimental rock star with a penchant for surrealism. And together, Laurie Anderson and Mike Patton are going to be performing a 16th century text by a general from the Ming Dynasty. No, really.

It's been months now and people in the general area continue to put up Ring alerts about stuff being stolen from their cars.  Like almost daily at this point.  And it's because they continue to leave valuable shit in their cars and/or leave the doors unlocked.

WHY DO THEY KEEP DOING THIS?

the downside of working for a non-profit is people sometimes deciding to donate their garbage to you and expecting a huge receipt from it. like today i pop into my office to find a random hp pavillion pc sitting there. upon further inspection its about a decade old, filled with dust and with incredibly outdated amd parts and the keyboard and mouse caked with filth plus a note that says "supposed to be worth $500 and it runs windows 10! what can we do with it?". gonna be a bummer to whoever accepted it when i suggest throwing it in the trash :lol

reminds me of when we got a donation of a wii, three games, and a balance board with the person wanting to claim $750 on that donation. :rofl

was testing out the new edge browser at work to see how it faired compared to the old and :leon it's actually really good. feels faster than chrome, works better than old edge or chrome with the wack gov't sites we need to use, and has more GPO controls too...just need to see how well it plays with some of our custom forms and such. i'm legit surprised at how much i like it.

i even installed it at home, though i'll probably keep using ff as a main browser cause of the anti-tracker and privacy options. but i'm also the type of crazy person who uses three browsers at home.

was just browsing around at work during lunch and happened upon this article
https://www.koat.com/article/apd-unknowingly-hires-3-time-felon/30716033#

the name sounded familiar to me but couldn't remember why. ended up looking through my email and noticed we hired a dude with the same name a while ago and he starts on monday. forwarded it to hr and got a reply back that it's the same guy and he used fake info to apply with us and he seems to have forged college records as well. :lol

Need to test drive it some more but so far so good

+ very fast
+ new tab features are neat
+ video playback seems really good
+ easy to get your previous data from chrome

- I don't like how the scrolling feels, too twitchy and fast

I use the USPS email service to see what letters I’m getting in the mail. Currently at work, and I can see the IRS sent me a letter. I don’t think it’s my tax refund check, since the status website says it hasn’t been approved yet. This was my first year applying with Turbo Tax and my return looked bigger than it should. Kinda nervous lol.

I had a dream last night that I was playing RDO and my character got into the middle of a massive ambush and suddenly the leader of the bad guys was chasing me and it was a huge fat Sonic the Hedgehog, like a really crappy looking one, like if a massive fat dude was cosplaying the movie version, badly. So I was thinking why is Sonic so popular, he's a total dick and shot him and then my alarm woke me up. I remembered the dream and had a good laugh at the thought of that stupid looking giant Sonic suddenly appearing in RDR, quality dream content for once  :success

Also I googled fat Sonic, was not disappointed.

https://www.washingtonpost.com/graphics/2020/world/national-security/cia-crypto-encryption-machines-espionage/

Quote
For more than half a century, governments all over the world trusted a single company to keep the communications of their spies, soldiers and diplomats secret.

The company, Crypto AG, got its first break with a contract to build code-making machines for U.S. troops during World War II. Flush with cash, it became a dominant maker of encryption devices for decades, navigating waves of technology from mechanical gears to electronic circuits and, finally, silicon chips and software.

The Swiss firm made millions of dollars selling equipment to more than 120 countries well into the 21st century. Its clients included Iran, military juntas in Latin America, nuclear rivals India and Pakistan, and even the Vatican.

But what none of its customers ever knew was that Crypto AG was secretly owned by the CIA in a highly classified partnership with West German intelligence. These spy agencies rigged the company’s devices so they could easily break the codes that countries used to send encrypted messages.

Makes me wonder how many VPN companies are front companies for one espionage agency or another. If they were gonna spy on me, I wish they would at least do a better job of unblocking shit like BBC iPlayer and other geo locked content.

Quote
Sex robots may cause psychological damage

US researchers have warned that the availability of sex robots with artificial intelligence (AI) poses a growing psychological and moral threat to individuals and society. They say the technology is escaping oversight because agencies are too embarrassed to investigate it.

The scientists want action to prevent the unregulated use of such robots.

Dr Christine Hendren of Duke University told BBC News that "the stakes were high".
"Some robots are programmed to protest, to create a rape scenario," she said. "Some are designed to look like children. One developer of these in Japan is a self-confessed paedophile, who says that this device is a prophylactic against him ever hurting a real child. "But does that normalise and give people a chance to practise these behaviours that should be treated by just stamping them out?"

Kathleen Richardson, who is a professor of the Ethics and Culture of Robots and AI at De Montfort University in Leicester, wants this kind of marketing outlawed.

"Are we going to move into a future where we keep normalising the idea of women as sex objects?" she told BBC News.
"If someone has a problem with a relationship in their actual lives you deal with that with other people, not by normalising the idea that you can have a robot in your life and it can be as good as a person."

Thirsty nerds have actually got some women shook at the prospect of an overpriced fuckdoll  :rejoice

Just came back from jury duty. Was just in the pool, didn't have to sit in on a trial. Almost pure silence for the initial two hours where the room got to hear a dude rip ass in the far too close bathrooms. Dude straight up painted the bowl with one mighty heave.

I also dressed business casual where most of the men my age and younger didn't give a fuck. Felt good looking fly.

Fortunately, as jurors, we were able to bring our smartphones with us. Diming out your fellow jurors has never been easier.

Algiers looks like a really cool city. Has anyone been there? Honestly I don’t even know if it’s a country people visit. I know nothing about the country outside of what I learned from great African writer Albert Camus’ biographical details. So I basically don’t know anything about it post-1950something.
