I ignore the idiot lights in my car as long as my maintenance items (oil, coolant, etc) are all fine and I don't feel it driving any differently.  If something is seriously wrong you'll feel it before the idiot lights point it out.  Most times it's something like an odd misfire that requires you to do nothing and will clear after 50 miles or so.  But by that point you've probably already taken it in to the shop and paid a few hundred bucks for something that was never an issue to begin with.  Hell, a loose gas cap will set off most Check Engine lights.

I agree with you, but then we're probably in the minority. How many drivers even know where to check their oil, seriously? My girlfriend doesn't. I explained to her (for at least the second time) the difference between wheels and tires recently.

True.  Even guys I know that like to call themselves "car guys" don't understand simple maintenance procedures on a car.  My dad was a mechanic and even though I didn't really get into cars until a 3 or 4 years ago I've always been fairly competent regarding how they work so I probably take that knowledge for granted.

My car's "check engine" light came on last Friday, so I have been limiting my travels until I could get it looked at today. Checked Yelp for the nearest well-rated repair place and dropped it off this morning. Walked to a Starbucks and have been using their wifi for an hour.  I'll be spending most of today at a mall, entertaining myself. Sitting in food courts, reading and drawing; it feels like I am back in America, but it also feels like high school.

Go to Autozone first.  Get the code read and find out what's wrong.  Then take it to a repair place.  That way you know if they're BS'ing you or not.  Or it could be something so incredibly easy you can do yourself.  Like a spark plug misfiring.

It's probably an oxygen sensor or some shit.

So AutoZone will just read my computer and tell me what the current flagged code is? That's pretty neat.

My job may only pay ~18/hr but there sure are somethings I like about it. Namely paid days of absence instead of sick days. So not only do I get 17 days of vacation a year, I also get up to six additional paid days to use whenever the fuck I want.
