I've been waging a war against flies for about two weeks now.

I've taken away their food sources, for the most part. I wash dishes as I use them, and I keep the garbage sealed. Nothing is ever left out. I keep the counter tops clean. Every day I've had to kill like 20-40 flies though. I don't know what they're even subsisting on, or why they even bother to hang out here since there's no food that I can see.

This happened at the house where my husband and all his friends lived back in the day. They'd kill thousands of fruit flies daily. It was absolutely disgusting.

Culprit? A bag of potatoes that looked fine, but when you picked it up, everything was rotting underneath.

The way I trap them by the way is take a plastic mug, put an inch or so of water in it, some vinegar that smells like rotting fruit apparently and a drop of dish soap that breaks the surface tension. Then put cling wrap over the cup and poke a hole in it with a pencil. I do that because some of the flies take forever to get into the liquid and drown so they'll fly in the cup through the hole but they're too dumb to fly out of the same hole anymore so there's often a lot of live ones inside the cup that would just fly away if anyone got near it but they can't because of the cling wrap. Will be doing this all autumn again

This morning I was woken by an early call from customs agent telling me my freight company hadn't given him some necessary paperwork to file before a shipment left last week and I was looking at a 35,000$ fine for late filing.  We flipped out, got the paperwork in order, filed it, and then the freight company called 8 hours later to let us know that they had gone ahead and filed it on time without telling us.
