Dawn of the Planet of the Apes was good -- but way more predictable, cheesy, and exploitative than the first film. Rise was great because the character moments of Caesar growing up were done very well. Dawn, while simultaneously being larger set-wise feels much more limited plot-wise. The human characters manage to be much more forgettable than even a Transformers film. I don't remember, literally, ANY of their names. Nor did I really give a shit about them.

The ape scenes were better, but the limited dialogue scope you have with all-ape conversations taking up such a large percentage of the runtime makes them repetitive and cloying. This isn't helped by the soundtrack, which runs the gamut of bombastic percussion to the same two piano notes played over and over again.

Overall, the AVClub's B- is a pretty good grade for the film. It was not as surprisingly good as Rise was, and I'm stumped that people are saying it's like Empire Strikes Back or that it's an "instant classic." It's a much more forgettable summer popcorn flick than its superior predecessor.

I pretty much agree.  I thought the best parts were the ape interactions when they didn't speak.  They were trying to walk the line of being believable (lol) and the apes speaking.  I guess they thought audiences wouldn't appreciate seeing the apes communicate strictly through sign language and occasional words.  But the best parts were just observing the ape society and how it mirrored pieces of ours.

I thought Koba was pretty great until the 3rd act too.  The 3rd act is really where it goes downhill for all of the interactions because it begins to focus back on humans.  Again humans are the worst part of the script.  Just completely cliche.

Still the best blockbuster by far this summer.  It was really damn enjoyable for me.

Having an irrational panic attack of a severity that you need to take a diazepam to supplement to your daily anxiety medication but then actually experiencing legitimate panic because of a project with a tight deadline where the work has to be razor sharp accurate and is voluminous (i.e. your concentration has to be sustained) is an interesting physiological experience.

On the plus side, it's good to know what legitimate anxiety feels like again.

I think it overall was hamstrung by being the middle section of a trilogy. I think if they can capture what made Rise so surprisingly good, then the next film -- when shit REALLY goes down -- should be much more entertaining overall.

Just use some better actors/give your human characters actual names that people say to each other ever.

I was considering stopping at a bar on the way home, but I know that if I do I will just drink and be anti-social instead of drink and be social. :yeshrug

I really need to figure out the voting for the whitest sitcom thing anyway. That thread could die without there ever being an answer to that burning question.  :geoff

I just gotta cool off and hang on, which is the hard part after hanging on for a long time with nothing to show for it.

Moving this fall should be good because my current place sucks and has too many bad memories now. I'll probably end up with some dipshit juco roommates to keep me entertained wherever I end up.  :heh

For once in my life I had a need to remember the dual tense.  :whoo

That is possibly the stupidest sentence I've ever written in Arabic BTW.

spoiler (click to show/hide)
"A Hebrew and an Arab cross the swift river of Clark Fork."

It's funny (I think at least) because all the words except Clark Fork have the same 3 letters as their root.

And also because the action described isn't an actual example of the hijinks Z and I would get up to if we were in the same ZIP code.

Slander the exploited many brehs :beli

Breh you would flay me alive if you heard half the shit I say irl in meetings. "They'd better negotiate hard when their current CBA expires with the union." (Yes some private sector industries are still unionized.) etc.

Don't you work with attorneys or something?

All opinions on being a drone for money invalidated.

CPAs and EAs.

I only work through attorneys in situations where the tax avoidance is so criminal that there has to be some kind of legally enshrined confidentiality to keep everyone's mouth shut (these situations are really fun...), or in estate planning (usually pertaining to some godawful nonsense like intentionally defective grantor trusts, yes that's what they're actually called).

Avoided total Dev annihilation for once.  :whew

TBH i don't even care that much about the poors you annihilate. I just like watching people firmly who self-identify on the ends of ideological spectrums fail themselves. Like hard core bible thumping Republicans who hire gay prostitutes in state-underwritten trips to Venezuela.

Well, I became the way I am politically because of my work, I didn't enter the field like that.

Even when I was utterly skint in my early 20s and eating high calorie, low nutrition garbage every other day (if I was lucky), I was still just a milquetoast coastal Democrat.

I'd tell the story of the exact moment when I really radicalized, but it's not an interesting story and I can't make it funny in any way whatsoever so don't much see the point. If you've ever read one of my tax posts in PoliBore you might have a faint idea of how it happened.

There was a company I worked with that manufactured something you'd use to manufacture other things, let's say they made giant automated hammering machines as an absurd example. (I really hope there's no such thing as an automated hammering machine irl...)

An owner of this company had an associate that wanted to start a business using these giant automated hammering machines to make something else, we'll say tin drums since I'm looking at my bookshelf atm for inspiration.

Well tin drums aren't exactly that lucrative, and the associate couldn't put up a lot of capital to actually start the business, so a group of investors got together and helped the associate start it. Why would they capitalize the business if tin drums aren't lucrative you might be wondering. They capitalized it so that all of them could have a consistent business loss flow through to their individual tax returns every year. (Most of these losses were losses that didn't require the investors to put more money into the company after capitalizing it, not all losses are created equal.) When you're a high income taxpayer this is the sort of absurd shit you engage in to avoid paying taxes.

I get to read a lot of internal company emails because it's necessary to do my job and also because no one really seems to care if I do, I'm just some nebbish who works on the taxes. One day I came across an email chain involving the investors in the tin drum company. The associate who had started the company had made a small charitable donation (low 4 figures) from the company to a cause most people wouldn't bat an eye at donating to. However this donation enraged the investors. This is slight paraphrasing, but one of them said something to the effect of, "What is [the associate] doing donating to charity from [tin drum company]? This is OUR charity for US."

When I read that statement I was just like :what and all the little things I'd seen since I started in the business that troubled me profoundly but I didn't link together finally did link together. Epiphany. I didn't exactly take up a las Barricadas the next day, but I did start looking for answers shortly thereafter.

e: As an amusing postscript to this story, the tin drum company is actually making a lot of money these days so its entire raison d'ętre is gone now.

Since I told the story of my epiphany I should also tell the tale of the time I was almost exposed. :ufup

I was working late with a CPA and it'd been a 12-16 hour day. To break the monotony we started talking about cabbages and kings, this, that, and what have you. Somehow theatre came up--I can't recall the particulars as to why sorry--and after sharing their favorite play the CPA asked me to share mine. Now I can't answer that question still today, and I certainly couldn't then, so I said that I really couldn't pick a favorite play but (stupidly) added that I did have a favorite musical so as to not abruptly end the conversation or appear philistine. "Oh you do? I love musicals! What's your favorite musical?"

My favorite musical is The Threepenny Opera. I'm gonna go ahead and link the Wiki article about it, please make sure to carefully read the opening paragraph of the article. Even if you're familiar with the work, read that opening paragraph.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Threepenny_Opera

Now what I should have done was name some other musical when queried, but I didn't, I said The Threepenny Opera was my favorite musical instead. I couldn't think of another musical to name that wouldn't make me look like a dweeb, I didn't feel like lying even if I could think of one, and, tbh, no one I work for gives a shit about anything I'm interested in that they aren't familiar with.

(Once I was reading my favorite book--Ilf and Petrov's The Golden Calf--and a client saw me reading it and asked me what I was reading and I said, "The Golden Calf." "Oh, is that Biblical?" they responded uninterestedly. "In a manner of speaking," I replied. :hitler)

Anyway, despite never showing an interest in things I was interested in that they were unfamiliar with like all my other clients, this CPA was intrigued by my answer and so what did they do? They opened up Wikipedia and typed in The Threepenny Opera. :snoop

Now I'd read that article before and knew I'd fucked up real bad when they went to Wikipedia. I could only hope that seeing a bunch of names they didn't know would turn off the CPA and they'd close the page before getting to the part of that introduction I wouldn't want someone I work for to get to.

That didn't happen, and, to make matters worse, the CPA started reading aloud the opening paragraph of the Wikipedia article for the work... well right up until they got to a particular word in it. Then they abruptly stopped reading and an awkward silence fell upon the room.

Brehs I have never had to so hard in my life. I said I liked it just because of the music... when I mentioned "Mack the Knife" it rang a light bulb in the CPA's head and they agreed that that was a great track. Then I added that it was like SO funny that even though Brecht meant for it to satirize bourgeois (I use this word in its conventional and not Marxist sense) propriety and morality, its biggest fans ended up being the Weimar bourgeoisie. What a noob, right? :heh

Thankfully they bought it :whew and that was the last time I talked about anything I actually gave a shit about with a client . :mynicca

Well that's the most high end, deep shit version of "I read Playboy for the articles" I've ever seen. I wish I was 17. Reading Kara's posts would have added at least a few hundred points to my SAT scores.

But nobody cares if you like some Communist play, though.

My sibling and I were at the same 4th of July barbecue this year and it was hosted by some real evangelical south Orange County stereotypes. During the party someone asked why the minimum wage went up so much in Seattle recently. I explained--conspicuously avoiding political labels--that it was part of the election platform of a recent electee to the city council which seemed to satisfy everyone's curiosity. Then my sibling (who does not share my political beliefs or faculties for social grace) blurts out, "Wasn't [Kshama Sawant] a socialist party candidate?"

Brehs the chill that descended on the room after they fumbled that one. :whew

"We've got real Right Wingers out in Orange County. Let me tell you about the Committee to Nuke the Whales. ..."

Kshama...sometimes she looks so hot, other times...

Some googling of her introduced me to a Dems Against Obamacare Facebook page that includes her comments. It hasn't been updated since February.
