Family members, friends, and people totally unrelated to me like to use the term 'life changing event'', but they use it in a completely improper way that annoys the fuck out of me. I even saw this on a Aziz Ansari bit. It always comes back to some decision they made which they credit for changing their entire lives. So it's random or it's a decision you could have made at any time. Like, "this book changes my life" or "this song changed my life". These are decisions you could have made at any time and they aren't going to totally alter your life in a way you hadn't planned to roughly have your life play out. In the Aziz bit, it's some friend going to a store and running into his wife. If he doesn't meet her, then he probably meets someone else or lives life as he has just with different or less people.

A life changing event is when you lose your hand in a freak accident. You won't ever live your life the same way. You win the lottery and that's a life changing event, because these are actual events that bring in major, unexpected changes. Deciding to drink ginger tea because of Oprah's book of the month is not life changing. My uncle gets Multiple Sclerosis and then his life as he had planned it is gone. That's a life changing event.

People talking about simple choices that have a random chance of leading somewhere beneficial as life changing are just reverse engineering common happenstance. Religious folk compound this by crediting God for whatever minor thing produced their expected life as being some sort of sign. No, your life didn't change. It just hit your expectations in a way you did not expect. Congrats on figuring out you are not a prophet which can foretell the exact happenings of your planned life. It's not life changing. It's your life happening as foretold in a magazine. Shut the fuck up and look at people who gave up expectations if you want to see life changing events.

Trust me, life changing events appear life changing right away. They don't seem so long after the fact. You never say "I never thought civil war would cause my family to lose their home and flee the country, but here I am!" No, you say shit like that about giving a girl your number on a napkin. You don't say that about life changing events.
