I hate going there, but they also sent me a refund check for almost $500 last month for using their credit card, so I'm not gonna complain.  You know what I hate the most about the one near me?  The parking lot.  It's always completely full, no matter what time or day that you go.

We were at Ikea a week ago so my wife could buy a new desk.  While there I picked up some of those LED puck lights.  I'm hardly the handy man but decided to get them installed under the cabinets in the kitchen.  Or should I say "installed."  I used 3M tape to stick the lights up and then very carefully ran the wiring along the underside of the cabinets on one side.  Looked great.  Then I got to the other side and would up with way too much wire.  So I just sort of bunched it all up, tied it off, and taped all that mess under the cabinets too.    It looks awful if you peek under the cabinets, but from eye level, it looks great.

My doctor does this as well. If my wife (a nurse) says I don't need them, I don't take them. But if I /do/ take them, I take the full course because half-beaten infections tend to make unwanted, stronger comebacks. That's is how superbugs are evolved.

So, I had gotten a hand injury in my senior year of college so I couldn't finish my performance degree (you can't perform, you can't be a performance major). Around that time consulting came calling and I was like "Why go back and finish a music degree worth a cup of coffee when I'm already making double what I expected to make as a musician?" Honestly, I don't regret that decision at all. I look at it as a business decision, and if I was running a business with a similar problem I would've made the same decision. A degree wouldn't have helped me all that much at this point and diverting time and resources away from "climbing the ladder" at that point to finish wouldn't have paid back the return on investment.

However, I'm getting fed up with this corporate lifestyle and have seriously been playing with the idea of leaving it behind and becoming a teacher. I taught in college and loved it. Right now, I can't realistically consider it, with my kids and finances where they are. But I can see the light at the end of that tunnel and know in a few years it is something that I can not only consider, but actually do. Anyone done this sorta thing? Any advice?

It could be my mid-life crisis talking, but I don't want to get to the end of life and feel that all I accomplished was to make a few rich people richer. That would be a decision I WOULD regret. I don't have much choice now, but I will have a choice later.

My plan is in a few years to leave consulting and take a full-time employee job. With the time saved in crazy work hours I should be able to finish off that year/year and a half I have left hopefully.

Several of my friends wised up and left game development, joined teaching positions at universities of varying reputation. Experiences seem similar: They are generally happier than they had been. They miss the money. They like going home on time. They are happy to have a reasonable set of benefits and a retirement plan. The students are sometimes cool, but frequently really entitled, waiting to be taught rather than realizing that academia is a set of opportunities, not the responsibility of the teacher to infuse the student.

One of the neighbor kids is in my kid's class and they became friends.
Poor kid grew up in the hood, his dad left them early on. He lives in a house with his mom and twin brother and sister (both 2) and his Aunt and her kids. His mom has sickle cell and has been in the hospital for about a week now. By default he's sorta been at our house since he doesn't want to be home on his own (I think the Aunt is taking the twins their daddy's house and spending time with her boyfriend).  We've even taken up helping him do his homework and all that. This poor kid is worried his mom might be dying, since she's been in the hospital for so long. And I try to be cool around him since he's going through all this crap, but his mom was telling me that I'm essentially the closest thing to a father figure this kid has in his life. Kid's holding up rather well, but man, it sucks to see a 10 year old go through this stuff. 

Honestly, I don't know what will happen to him if his mom gets worse. I think the twins dad would take them but this guy doesn't really have anywhere to go.

I do data consulting. I got into it because in college I was the Production Assistant for the college classical radio station and I did whatever was needed, secretary stuff, taking dictation, event planning and setting up a database for all their self-produced recordings. After I did that a firm was like "Hey we're starting up a CRM project, and you're cheap, wanna join?" Got in learned everything there was to learn about it and moved to the next thing and so on and so on.

tl;dr I got car-blocked by Adam Sandler 

So, I was in LA for stuff and my usual got to strategy if I'm in LA on a weekday past 3pm is to go to the Arclight Hollywood which is the best theater ever and see a movie to kill time until traffic dies down (3:30 hour drive vs 55 mins drive).  So I went and did that and they had Caramel Popcorn and it was amazing (I hadn't had that since I was a kid with Cracker Jacks) and I saw Life which was fucking terrible but I wrote about that in the movie thread.

I get out of the movie and look at my phone and I see Trump launched missiles and I'm like oh fuck, just when I was having a nice time eating caramel popcorn at the best movie theater ever.  Also traffic was still like 1:40 mins, so I decided to go grab a bite.  As I'm walking out of the theater I see all these people in suits and lines and security everywhere and I don't think much of it and go eat.  There seemed to be a lot of people on the street in line for something and the place I ate at was full of hollywood (guy behind me was like "hey, I brought my agent!" to his buddies).

Afterwards I head back and as I'm getting back near the theater there are all these people shouting ADAM SANDLER ADAM SANDLER ADAM SANDLER and I look over and apparently Adam Sandler is there doing the red carpet premiere for his new Netflix movie.  I try to get back to the parking lot but the whole street and everywhere has been blocked off by cops and security.  So I'm standing around waiting for all this stuff to get done with and it's going on and on, so I find a back way to sneak into the parking lot (which totally gets past all security, so security wasn't that great!) and take off.

But when I was blocked off standing on the street with people shouting Adam Sandler! Adam Sandler! the two thoughts that came to me were 1) I can't believe this many people still care about Adam Sandler movies, and that 2) not only are his modern movies terrible, but he's even car-blocking me from leaving; freaking Adam Sandler
